Hello families, and welcome to the new school year! By now, you’ve probably already strug-gled with getting up on time, after school activities, and just getting back in to the routine. I hope schedules have smoothed out for your family… and I hope so for mine, as well! I wanted to touch on a topic that has come up a couple of times lately. People have been asking the question about what it means to be an “active member” of the parish. This often comes up at the beginning of the school year, when tuition costs are being evaluated, as “active members” pay less for tuition at St. Anthony and at Dowling Catholic. Additionally, this year, families must be registered members to be enrolled in the PRE and Confirmation pro-grams. So what’s the big deal, anyway? What about people who come to church regularly and put a few bucks in the basket, but prefer not to be on the rolls? Why is it so important to be in the system? Well, the answer is simple. You get to belong to something. You are accountable and you get the perks. You get more information, and you become invested. The place starts to feel less than just a church and more like a parish. How do we know if you are active? Well, there are a couple of ways. Do you tithe? In other words, do you put your envelopes in the basket? If you are not receiving offering envelopes in the mail with your name on them, you are not a registered member. If you put money in the basket without it being in your envelope, you do not get the credit for the donation. I under-stand that some people don’t care about “getting credit” for their donation. That is wonderful and we so appreciate it! But if you are going to want a break in tuition, you will want to use an envelope. There is no government agency that sees this and it’s completely confidential, so please don’t worry about judgement of any kind. Another way to be accountable for attendance is to throw your envelope in the basket, even if you are tithing online or have nothing to give that day. Your envelope will be like a note of attendance for the office and your participation will be noted. I know this idea of accountability bothers some folks, and I would say to them, simply don’t do it. Third, ask yourself if the priest would know your face. If I showed him a picture of you or your family, would the priests or deacons recognize any of you? If the answer is no, then you may not be an “active member.” An active member attends Mass regularly, as well as other parish functions. Priests and deacons are present at all Masses and most functions, so this seems a fair scale. I know this isn’t comfortable for many people to hear, and I am expecting at least a few of you to email or call me and let me know you disapprove of my piece this week. But as the Director of Faith Formation, it truly is part of my job to discuss these things, even when it’s a sensitive issue. So there you have it. If you want to be considered an active member, or if you want to feel like this place is your church home, or if you want to invest in good relationships and fel-lowship with others, and if you want a discount in tuition, then register in the office, come to Mass and other functions, and tithe when you can. It really is that simple. I heard recently, that we are responsible for providing good soil. God will sow the seeds. Let’s all work on being the good soil together! Peace and blessings to you, Melissa Hill

From Msgr. Frank Chiodo

Dear Friends,

School began this week and we're off to a great start. Enrollment is up again—second year

in a row—even though we graduated a very large eighth grade last spring. We ask you to join

us in praying for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon our faculty, staff and students.

Fall Festival is Sept. 16th, 17th and 18th. This is the key fund raiser for the year. We need

everyone on board for another successful festival. Our committees are asked to create a bas-

ket for the festival silent auction, so please do your part. With team work, we can pull off an-

other huge successful festival. Thanks to Todd Bordenaro and his team for their preparation and coordination of the

event.

Fr. Dan Gehler has finally moved into the parish house west of the grotto. This house is owned by the parish and

since the bishop has instructed us to have our parochial vicars housed outside of the rectory. This house should work

very nicely. No extra cost is incurred by the parish, other than utilities since it is now on the tax exempt rolls. This is

possible because it is used by the parish for parish purposes.

I was reviewing the parish roster the other day, tabulating the number of new parishioners over the last several

years. Figures show we have registered 750 new households since 2007. That is a 50% increase in new members

since 2007. Yes, we have lost some in death and moving, but it is still an awesome accomplishment these days. We

need to reach out to new members—and old ones who haven’t been joining us for Mass—letting them know we are glad

they are part of St. Anthony—a family

parish.

Bless you, Msgr.
