Church From time to time through my adult life, the friends of mine who are not Catholic challenge me about the faith. Why is the Church against abortion? Why is the Church against contraception? Why is the Church against premarital sex? Why does the Church want to ruin a good time, a bunch of old

men telling people what they can and cannot do? If at the Last Supper, Jesus broke bread with his disciples, why do you guys use crackers for communion? Why do you guys worship statues? What is this obsession you have with Mary? Why do you need to tell a priest your sins? Can’t you just confess to God and eliminate the middle man?

To most of those questions, I never could give an easy sound-bite answer that would ever satisfy my friends. Even the longer drawn out answers lead to more questions that would eventually trip me up to a point of frustration in trying to defend the faith. Now that I am a priest I get less of those kind of questions. I get more general statements about what they believe with maybe the chance I would validate their belief as a legitimate way of living out their life. They also know that I refuse to get into a theological argument because that is something to me that never bears any fruit.

Even people of the Catholic faith have questions like this, and wonder where the Church gets Her authority on all these matters. Can’t we have a cafeteria style morality and pick and choose what is really sinful or not and still practice the faith? The scripture readings have a handle on where the Church gets Her authority.

In the Gospel, Simon recognizes Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God. With that recognition, Jesus calls Simon--Peter, in Hebrew it would be Cephas, meaning Rock. Peter is the rock foundation of the Church Jesus built. Peter was made leader, with all the authority to loose and to bind. This authority has been passed down through two millennia.

The Church is seen today by many people as a large, world-wide organization. People from both inside and outside tend to see what is external and visible—the large bureaucracy centered on the Vatican, the bishops throughout the world managing their dioceses, and the tremendous number of Catholic institutions.

But the Church is much more than that. In fact, if it were deprived of most of its institutions, it would still be very much alive, because the Church is first of all a living organism with a life of its own, with the life of the Spirit pulsating through its members. Each one of us has the power to make Christ present in our world.

The words “community” and “communion” are also used of the Church. Communion refers to something deeper than community. Whereas the bond in a community is a common interest of some kind, “communion” refers to the fact that we are bonded with God and with one another by the life of the Spirit within us. This bond goes much deeper than a common interest—it is a bonding at the level of our being. We live in communion, we share it together and we draw life from it, especially when we celebrate the sacraments.

The Church, especially here at our local parish is also a home for us. We are a community where we should feel at home. But there will also be a certain discipline and order, because the Church is the guardian of what is sacred and holy. Here, we should be able to experience the warmth of the Spirit.

But the Church must never become an entity that just simply carries out a function to its members. Otherwise, it will be in danger of becoming a social club or a support group with Jesus Christ being an afterthought. It must always

provide a counter-cultural witness. The Church has a culture of its own that arises from the gospel. This culture embodies a system of values and meanings that often run counter to the values and meanings of civil society. If we are really conscious of being Christ’s Church we will experience constant conflict between what the Church stands for and the values of society.

As we come together to be nourished by God’s word and Eucharist, and to experience the Lord’s presence in our faith community, we are conscious of the bond of unity and love that we share with so many other communities of faith throughout the world. We are the Church, the Body of Christ. “For from Him and through Him and for Him are all things. To Him be glory forever.” Let us pray that we continue to live in communion with what the Church teaches and believes.—TB

Smiling and eager students will soon fill the hallways and classrooms of St. John’s School. Each day these children will become better versions of themselves – stronger in Christian virtues, deeper in learning, and more rooted in service. Your support makes this happen. Thank you. Please remember that each of you is welcome to participate in the life of the St. John’s School community. We are blessed to add two new teachers to our team this year: Lora Maertens and Rose Niederkorn. Welcome to our St. John’s School family!

The Faith Formation program can use your help! We still have a few spots open for teaching. Please consider being a Catechist to our youth/children—this can be very rewarding. Team teaching is another option. Training available and the “Nitty Gritty” meeting will be Wednesday, September 13 at 6 pm. (Don’t wait till last minute, since we need to have the E3—background check, signed code of conduct and VIRTUS training done before you can teach! These are to keep our children/youth safe.) Contact Cindy. Thanks to the Catechists that have already accepted the invitation to teach!

Please turn in your registrations for Faith Formation!. They can be found on the website and in the files at both upper entrances.

Would you help maintain our cemetery? We need help leveling and raising some headstones Monday, September 11 starting at 9:00 am. Please bring gloves and a shovel.

You should have received census forms in the mail. Please return them to the office with any corrections or additions needed.

The Right of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a guided journey to prepared for sacramental initiation and entry into the catholic Church. Who should attend? Non-Catholics, Christians or non-Christians, who want to be come members of the Catholic Church and Baptized Catholics who have never celebrated Confirmation. This program will begin this fall. Please contact Father Terry if you are interested.

September 1 to October 10 the CCW is sponsoring a drop off for clean unlabeled pill bottles and used sheets & pillow cases in good condition to be sent to Haiti. Please place in the basket near the Parish Office.

Thank you to Happy Harry’s Furniture in Farmington for the donation. This donation is a result of parishioners purchasing furniture there and designating St. Pius V as their donation choice.

Our sympathy to Mary Irrthum at the death of her mother Irene Nicolai.

100th Anniversary of the Fifth Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima September 13, 1917

Our Lady told the children: “Continue to pray the Rosary in order to obtain the end of the war.” “In October I will perform a miracle so that all may believe.”

Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us. August 12, 2017 Dear good people of St. Pius V, On Thursday of last week, I made the move to my new residence, Regina Senior Living, here in Hastings, MN. I ask your prayers for God’s help, that I may accept this completely different life-style and manner of living.

My sincerest thanks go out to the men of St. Pius parish for helping in the moving of all my belongings, necessary for my new residence. The men who came to help were: 1. John Hommes, 2. Nick (Butch Lorentz), 3. Jim Lorentz,, 4. Ron Reinardy, 5. Bob Wernimont and 6. Gary Sigmeth.

They did a great job, and as I write this, I have my room pretty well organized, except for four boxes of “stuff” that I should have tossed much earlier.

So, again, peace be with you, and keep me in your prayers.

Yours sincerely, Fr. Leonard Siebenaler 1008 1st St West Room 526 Hastings, MN 55033

Catholic Heart Work Camp 2017 In June a combined group from St. Mary's, St. Pius V, and St. Joseph's made the long journey to New Orleans, Louisiana. It took us about 18 hours over two days to arrive to our destination of St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church & School, which was our home for the week where our bus load of 22 individuals became part of a family of around 300 people.

New Orleans can be such a beautiful & interesting place, but with all the beauty, there is still work that needs to be done. Some residents in the 9th district are still struggling with housing, where there was one family whose house was destroyed by Katrina. After 12 years of working on the structure themselves, it was recently torn apart by the tornadoes with similar cases in that area. We are so grateful to have been able to spend a week of our time helping others that have truly lost a lot, and are still trying to piece things together.

We would like to say thank you for all the donations that came from our parish. We really did feel supported by your generosity and faith. Every year Catholic Heart has a different motto, this year it was "Love, Serve, Connect." This is really Catholic Heart in a nutshell. We have been loved and choose to share that love. We are there to serve and make a difference in each community we visit. Finally we pray that we are able to connect with communities around the US and to empower others. See flyer for more details and pictures!!
