National Deaf Bowling Newsby Connie Marchione

Newcomer Phil Smith Wins Pacific Coast Deaf Masters, Scharnow Hits 299

(With thanks to Howard Sultan who finally sent me the results which was bowled last Memorial Day weekend at the Earl Anthony Dublin Bowl.)  DUBLIN —   After  losing  his  first  round match,  a  surprise newcomer Philip H. Smith, Castro Valley, CA bowled way over his average of 171 using a handicap of 31 pins per game in help winning 9 consecutive two-game matches. Smith beat former Deaf World champion Ed Bazan twice 482-446 and 480-468 to claim the $645 prize. Bazan, San Jose who received only 4 handicap for his 205 average, had won all his 4 matches without a loss and waited in the title finals for Smith to come out of the loser’s bracket. Bazan got $325 for his 2nd Deaf Masters runner-up prize. This once prestigious and proud Deaf Masters which was los-ing entries was voted last year to change from scratch to handicap event. Former champion Ralph Collier, Hawaii had led the 46 (lowest since 1963) entries field qualifying round with 232-260-256-211 for zero handicap, 959 total. The winner Smith had qualified 2nd with 824 plus 124 handicap 948 and in all averaged an unbelievable 194 for 24 games. Courageous Bazan qualified  in 6th with 898 plus 16 for 914 and finished with a creditable 227 average for 18 games. The Hawaiian Collier who lost out in 4th round, had averaged 227 for his 12 games. Placing third for $195 was Martin Duve, Sunol, CA with 27 handicap,  he  lost  in  the  semi-finals  367-504  to Smith. Former champion Mike Scharnow, Hayward thrilled the bowlers and fans with a 299 game in his 2nd round match play for the event’s high match series 550. But later lost 468-520 to Smith in the quarter-finals, placing 4th for $195.    The third high qualifier and former two-time champion Robert (Mr. 878) Ellison, Apline, CA shot the only other scratch 900 with 235-240-219-225 for zero handicap 919 but lost in the 3rd round. Andy Lorenzo, Thousand Oaks, CA rolled the qualifying round high game 279 but he lasted two rounds,  Of the 32 top qualifiers, 14 had 27 or more handicap per game. There were 13 of 46 entrants with 200-plus averages and only 5 failed to make the 799 low 32nd place cut. There were 56 entries in last year’s scratch event, 77 the year before and 57 two years be-fore. Changing to handicap seems not helping gain more entries.

Barish Finally Wins Pacific Coast Deaf Senior Masters

DUBLIN — It took a long time for two-time Deaf Senior Masters runner-up Harold Barish, Las Vegas to win the coveted Pacific Coast Deaf Senior Masters. Barish had runner-up finishes in 1995 and 2003 and finally accomplished the feat by defeating Gardy Rodgers, Los Angeles. It took handicap but it did not matter as both had 28 handicap, Barish won $270. Previously, Rodgers had won all his 4 rounds matches and waited in the finals without a  loss to Barish to come out of the losers bracket. This is Rodgers’ 2nd runner-up finish as he was before in 2006 and he received 135.  Like its larger one, Pacific Coast Deaf Masters, this senior event is using handicap this year. There were 16 entries, its record small-est in 20 years and used the seniors all-events totals with handicap for positions on the 16-men double elimination match plays. Las Vegas Pete Morreale, a former champion led the qualifying with 1966,  followed by David Campbell’s 1913. Barish qualified  in 6th and Rodgers 7th. Third place went to Las Vegas’ Sammy Sain who lost 183-260 to Barish in the semi-finals. Fourth place David Thordsen, Jackson-ville, FL who shot the events’s high game, 258, fell to Sain 213-223 in the quarter-final. All 16 entrants shared the prize money.

LAKEWOOD — Back to Cal Bowl for the second week of the new season and then we won’t return there again until October. There were some average correc-tions that resulted in changes in the standings, but not many, and this week found five teams tied at the top with 4 wins each. Seven are tied at 3 wins. three at two wins and the bottom team sports one win. Yep! The 52nd season looks as competitive as all those in previous years.

Scoring highlighted Kathy Parrish with 238-584, to set a cou-ple of season high scoring marks for the 156 and over bowlers but series takes precedence so we also list Dee Phipps with 223 high game. The 155 and under division did not change; Faye Billinger has197 high game and Millie Har-ris has 510 high series.

Kathy led the honor roll fol-lowed by Shanta Pittman 567, Vi Wilson 203-535, Margo McClain 526, Sus McGill 523, Kelly Tru-jillo 520, Dee Phipps 223-518, Dottie Lawn 516, Karen Mauricio 510, Jamie Vallier 507, Madelyn Majick 504,and Cil Moons 502. Since we only have 3-copy recaps; one for each team captain and the third is for the sheet service. That means there’s no 4th copy for me to collect the scores for the column, however, Barbara Bishop, who chairs the Brackets optional event with Betty Phillips, and collects the recap sheet for Bettys sheet service, will now provide weekly high scores and team standings for me to include our weekly Bowl-ing News column. This may not sound like a big deal, but it is and we thank her for the time it takes to do it.

NEXT WEEK: 10:30 A.M. Monday August 31 at Del Rio Lanes. Please note the time change for bowling and remember, the doors don’t open until 10 a.m. The complete league schedule is on the reverse side of the league rules distributed last week and captains are reminded they are responsible to a give a copy to each member of the team. Bowling times, address-es and phone numbers for each center is included and we advise all members to keep their copy in bowling bags for each reference.

A Lady’s Day!SAN DIEGO — The

NABI San Diego tournament this past weekend was held at Sea ‘N Air Lanes on the North Island Naval Station. Anita Smith was our only lady in the finals, but she showed no fear taking on the men (including husband, Jim!) She was the #2 seed, so didn’t have to bowl him head to head, but she left no doubt she was a formidable opponent! After all, the mem-ory of her NABI Women’s National Championship title is still a fresh one. Keep it up, girl, you’re on a roll!

The finals field was round-ed out with John Tanja, David Danielly, Jim Hall, Jim Smith, Jeff Greer & Chad Hill.

$50 guaranteed sidepots went to George Evans, Jim Nunnally, Tonya Danielly, Barret Noble, Jim Smith, Ani-ta, John Tanja & Jim Hall (2),

James Lee & George Evans each collected $50 for striking in the 3rd, 6th & 9th of game

Visionary of the Week: This week our panel of esteemed judges have looked not to bowling scores but to character, and we found quite a character. Disco, yes that one, is our vision-ary of the week for bowling a 206 this past Wednesday during E.I.B.L. Great job and keep doing what you’re doing. Sweetness Quote of the Week: The notion that the public accepts or rejects anything in modern art is merely romantic fiction. The game is completed and the trophies distributed long before the public knows what has happened.- Tom Wolfe

Masters Tournament will of-fer not one, but two qualifying squads on Saturday, September 26—one at 9am and the second at 1pm. The top ten from each squad will then bowl after the 1pm squad is finished Satur-day to cut the field down to the top Sunday players for Match Game Play. Note: Bowlers bowling in the 9am qualifying squad may re-enter to bowl the 1pm squad but must pay entrant fee again.

And, be sure to catch our latest bit of info on the event that will brought to you care of another one of our tournament sponsors—Len Nicholson/Phantom Radio—the week of September 2 through 9, when he interviews Leon Stroope and Bette Addington who both serve on the Glover Masters Tournament Committee!! You can link on to Phantom Radio via the geusbc.org website and also get a clearer insight into the Glover Masters event. The broadcast has been giv-ing away Glover tournament event t-shirts to lucky winners to help promote the event! Tune in!!

NORWALK—On August 18 we electronically sent the copy for the August 20th issue to the printer in Tujunga, with the assurance that we had put out another great issue of the Bowling News.

Wednesday morning the

10,000 papers were picked up, de-livered to all the centers in South-ern California and Las Vegas by U.P.S., mail and hand delivery. Another perfect edition.

When I opened up my copy of the masterpiece—Oh My God—

The Missing Lettersby Carol Mancini

The words that had “fi” in them had holes. “fi” did not print in first, benefit, Pacific - etc. etc. etc. I called the printer - no explana-tion! So, If any of you computer whizzes have an answer, give me a call “If” there IS an answer!

12 Weeks is Too Fast & Too Furious for Rocky Marsh Doulbles - It is Over...

by Joy McGregorANAHEIM—Ahhhh..... The dog daze of summer and the

HOT Rocky Marsh Doubles’ 12 short weeks of sizzlin’ scores ended with sweeps on Aug. 21st. Our sweepstakes saw many, many happy faces as they were awarded their respective league honor awards and those lucky few, like Rich Heid who collected the lion’s share of the prize fund. Rich gives a big “Thank You” to Stacy Rider for her expertize coaching! Of course we crowned our champs, E.J. Rogers and Don Gut-omen bowling under the name, “Bayyybe”. Congrats to ALL our winners!!

All the Rocky Marsh bowlers would like to especially thank Linbrook Bowl for providing, once again, the most delicious lun-cheon prepared and served up by the coffee shop’s efficient staff. THANK YOU!!!!

I would like to personally give thanks to a GREAT bunch of bowlers who made up the Rocky Marsh roster this summer and to all our loyal subs -- what a pleasure to be your secretary! Thank you also to the Bowling News for publishing our weekly article, it is much appreciated by all the bowlers.

And, to all who enjoy stats ... We had six Perfectos; 64-250+ games; 34-260+ games; ten 278-288 games; five-289 games; four-298-299 games; 64-900+ series; 42-700+ sets; one 1,023 set, one 825/1,114 set and even a spectacular 7-10 pickup. Pretty impressive I’d say!!!

Have a “restful” remainder of our HOT summer (I pray for cooler temps) and I’ll probably see y’all on the lanes ...
