Welcome and greetings Ben Hooper, pastoral intern

* Call to worship based on Psalm 118

Leader: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.

All: The Lord is our strength and our song; he has become our salvation. Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous.

Leader: Open for us the gates of righteousness, and we will enter and give thanks to the Lord. We will give you thanks, for you answered us; you have become our salvation.

All: The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone. The Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

* Hymn of praise “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven”

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven, to his feet thy tribute bring;ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who, like me, his praise should sing?Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise the everlasting King.Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise the everlasting King.

Frail as summer’s flower we flourish blows the wind and it is gone. But while mortals rise and perish God endures unchanging on.Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise the high eternal One.Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise the high eternal One.

Angels help us to adore him; ye behold him face to face;sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space.Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise with us the God of grace.Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise with us the God of grace.text by Henry Lyte, 1834

* Prayer of adoration

Affirmationoffaith(11:00) taken from Colossians 1:15-20

Leader: Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

All: For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Leader: And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

All: For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Call to confession taken from 2 Chronicles 7 and Hosea 14

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin. I will heal their waywardness and love them freely.

Hymn of confession (11:00) “To Thee I Come”

To thee I come a sinner poor and wait for mercy at thy door;indeed, I’ve nowhere else to flee, O God be merciful to me.To thee I come a sinner weak and scarce know how to pray or speak;from fear and weakness set me free, O God be merciful to me!

To thee I come a sinner vile upon me, Lord, vouchsafe to smile;mercy through blood I make my plea, O God be merciful to me.To thee I come a sinner great and well thou knowest all my state;yet full forgiveness is with thee, O God be merciful to me!

To thee I come a sinner lost nor have I aught wherein to trustbut where thou art, Lord, I would be, O God be merciful to me. To glory bring me Lord at last and there when all my sins are passed;with all the saints I’ll then agree, O God was merciful to me!O God was merciful to me!text by Samuel Medley, 1738-1799

Silent prayers of confession

Assurance of God’s pardoning grace John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

* Hymn of assurance “How Great Thou Art”

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonderconsider all the worlds thy hands have made,I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Refrain: Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee: how great thou art, how great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee: how great thou art, how great thou art!

And when I think that God, his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,he bled and died to take away my sin. Refrain

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamationand take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration, and there proclaim, my God, how great thou art. Refraintext by Stuart K. Hine, 1949

Mark 12:1-12

1He then began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey. 2At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.

3But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. 5He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed. 6He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 7But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

9What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill these tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10Haven’t you read this scripture: “‘The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; 11the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”

12Then they looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away.

SERMON NOTES“The Parable of the Tenants”

Mark 12:1-12

1. The appropriate expectation of the faithful owner (vv. 1-2)

2. The appalling rejection of the owner’s servants and son (vv. 3-8)

3. The severe warning and clear proclamation (vv. 9-11)

4. The foolish response of the listeners (v. 12)

BIG IDEA: Serving in God’s vineyard is a gracious gift to steward.
