Transcript of AUGUST 25 & 26 MISSIONARY FROM ASCENT...
2012 No. 7 July 25, 2012
MISSIONARIES JEFF & NATALIE FAUST will be our guests at Trinity on August 25 and 26. Trinity has supported this ministry with monthly finances and prayers since 2009. If you do not know or remember this dynamic young couple, then save the last weekend of August to hear about their lives and ministries. The Fausts are staff members with Ascent Ministries, an evangelical outreach to inner-city Kansas City. Jeff and Natalie, whose family now includes four-month-old Kingston, will stir your hearts. Some of what they do with youth includes: • Leading Bible Studies in their home in the inner city • Conducting football camps and clinics • Opening their home to youth in their community to just come and hang out • Having cookouts together
COME HUNGRY!! Following the 5:30 Service on Saturday, August 25, we’ll provide a Kansas City style Beef BBQ meal (free-will offering) featuring Drinnin Beef Brisket plus all the trimmings! Jeff and Natalie will briefly talk about their personal experiences in ministry and how God has touched their lives and the lives of so many inner-city Kansas City youth through God’s love and faithfulness.
After the meal there’s a drawing for two free tickets to a Kansas City Chiefs’ football game!

WHAT MAKES LUTHERANS LUTHERAN - BAPTISM More than a few times I’ve been awakened in the middle of the night by a call from the hospital to learn that a newborn child is not expected to live. The anxious and heart-sick parents want me to come immediately to baptize their child before he or she dies. Of course, I do. But the experience always causes me to reflect again on the meaning of baptism and its place in salvation. Nowhere in the Bible is it even suggested that those not baptized are condemned eternally. In fact, it’s in Mark 16:16 that we read, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.” In the very next phrase, Jesus says, “But whoever does not believe will be condemned.” No mention here of not being baptized. Throughout the Scriptures, wherever salvation is spoken of, it is always the outcome of one’s faith. But Lutheran teaching is that baptism, like Holy Communion and like the written and spoken Word of God, is a “means of grace. ” Unlike the teaching that baptism is just a symbol of the cleansing from sin given when a person receives Jesus and their Savior, we believe God does something wonderful and supernatural when water is applied in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In fact, the Bible could hardly be more clear about it: “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His
death? We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, so that, as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His.” (Romans 6:3-5) Baptism unites us spiritually with Christ, and we share in His death and resurrection. This does not mean that baptism in other churches is invalid. Baptism is
something God does. Its benefit does not depend on the theology of the one doing the baptizing, nor even his or her faith. So this means there is no such thing as being “baptized Lutheran” or “baptized Catholic” or any other label. As Jesus commanded there is “one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all” done with water and in the name of the Triune God. Every Christian church baptizes by this formula; and so, such baptisms are valid.
Lutherans baptize infants and children because in baptism it is God alone who acts, and the Bible doesn’t say who not to baptize. God initiates a saving work. But we shouldn’t think of baptism as somehow magical. What God initiates must be nurtured in the Word of God. Parents are given great responsibility for the faith formation of their children, that they might grow to know and love their Savior.

HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE?
In the paragraph below there are the names of sixteen books of the Bible. Some of them are found in whole words, others in adjoining words. Can you find them? I once made a remark about the hidden books of the Bible. It was a lulu—kept people looking so hard for facts but for others it was a revelation. Some were in a jam—-especially since the names of the books were not capitalized, but the truth finally struck home to numbers of readers. To others, it was a real job. We want it to be a most fascinating few moments for you. Yes, there will be a really easy one to spot; others may require judges to help them. I will quickly admit that it usually takes a minister to find one of them, and there will be loud lamentations when it is found. One woman says she brews a cup of tea so she can concentrate better. See how well you can compete. Relax now, for there really are sixteen books of the Bible in the story. (Answers on Birthday Page) Pastor Zurek
