Then, they noticed another crying child in the river, and they pulled that child out. It took great effort, and they began to organize their activities to save the children as they came down the river. LAGNIAPPE Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time,

August 24, 2014

Dear Friends, This weekend the annual Men’s Retreat is being conducted. I am grateful to the Retreat Team for their good work for many months. This bears good fruit in so many lives. Our new Youth Director, Alyse Manning will speak at all Masses this weekend as the Kick Off for youth ministry is coming up shortly. Alyse is in the process of developing a larger Core Team for this ministry. In a few weeks we will consider Ministry Stewardship as part of Catholic Life. Our parish focuses three times a year on Stewardship-Prayer, Ministry and Finances. All three are components of being active in faith. The many ministries of the parish provides the work of the spirit across parish life. Most of these ministries are not directed by parish staff but through the baptismal calling to service which we share. As you will be invited to indicate your area of ministry service, I am hopeful that some new names and faces will appear offering service. The fruit of love is service. I will be representing the Diocese at a Regional Liturgy Meeting in Memphis this Monday evening through Wednesday afternoon. If you need any pastoral assistance, please call the parish office and one of the parish staff can help you. Pray for each other. God bless! Love,

We extend our sympathy to the following parishioners who recently lost a loved one:

To Judy Jeansonne on the death of her mother, Marjorie Dupuy.

To Ashley Knapps on the death of her grandmother, Betty Leger. To the Heinz Litty family on the death of Penny’s

sister, Laurel Wall.

LIFE TOGETHER KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FAMILY OF THE MONTH

The KC family of the month for July 2014 are James and Nancy LaBauve. James and Nancy were choir ministry members for 36 years and recently retired. Both are Eucharist, Nursing home and St. Matthew Guild Ministers. James is a 4th degree Knight currently serving as Warden and Nancy is a member of the Catholic Daughters. Congratulations!

THE ROCK

Peter was Jesus’ choice to lead the fragile band of apostles. In today’s Gospel, Simon is given a new name—Peter, the “rock.” In John’s Gospel, Peter is called to be a shepherd. He is expected to lay down his life for his sheep. And tradition tells us that he did just that. But today we think about the durable rock-like quality that Jesus needed in a leader. Peter was appointed to his leadership position for reasons we are not able to fathom. God knows, and Jesus knew well, that Peter was flawed. We cannot mistake his enthusiasms, though, his manifest love, and his great, exuberant faith. Those virtues saw him through. They are durable, tough, beautiful virtues. They make Peter a sympathetic and lovable person. They provide us with the balance and humor that we need as we consider our own roles in the universal church. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PARISH OFFICE CLOSED The Parish office will be closed on Monday, September 1, 2014, for Labor Day.

Stewardship of Ministry Prayerfully, We Serve with Generous Hearts

We Minister Prayerfully, Seeking God’s Direction In the weeks to come, we will begin the Total Stewardship effort we call the Stewardship of Ministry. As we prayerfully consider our personal involvement in parish ministries, we will consider the letters of St. Paul to his spiritual offspring, Timothy and Titus. When we think of his instruction to them, we are reminded that prayer flavors everything we do. That certainly includes our investments in works of service, so we pause to recognize the many ministry opportunities available to us through our church family of involved parishioners. Prayerfully, we serve with generous hearts, and we invite you to begin thinking about your own individual commitment to the ministries of this parish.

Jesus asked the disciples. “Who do you day that I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Christ” (Matthew 16:13-20).

ST JEAN VIANNEY CAPITAL CAMPAIGN “Our Time to Pray, Our Time to Give”

A MATCHING GIFT There are parishioners who work for businesses which will sometimes MATCH a charitable donation to a Church or School. Is your employer one of those people? If so, your gift to the Capital Campaign could be matched. Sometimes, the employer will match a gift to a SCHOOL but not a CHURCH. Regardless of the case, we can help you find out if your employer will match your gift. Talk to Fr. Tom or Debbie Curole at the parish office, 753.7950 so we can help you help us.

ADORATION “NOT JUST ANOTHER MEETING”

All are invited on Tuesdays to continue their worship and love of God at adoration. It is a visit, not a meeting. A visit of ‘love to love’. Bring whatever is in your heart and soul and leave it at the feet of the Lord for HE will be at yours. “Adoration for the Blessed Sacrament is the best time you will spend on earth”. -Mother Theresa Join us every Tuesday evening at 7:00pm for Eucharistic Adoration. Taking special time with our Lord is a great way to grow closer to Him.

Via Smartphones, Computers, or Tablets
