HIGHWAY SIX MEDIUMS WITH GRASS? Why is TXDOT putting grass in a few of the new “medi-ums”? 2-1/2 years ago when these mediums were designed, TXDOT determined that they would have a few Mediums wide enough (10 feet) to accommodate landscaping for “beautification”. During recent construction, “sleeves” were installed for irrigation. The maintenance of these land-scaped mediums will be pro-vided by local interested HOAs. Two HOAs have already vol-unteered for the Missouri City

ones. (NEVER In their wildest dreams, did TXDOT expect a Texas “drought”.)

If we know, we tell.....I noticed that former FBISD school board president Sonal Bhuchar announced her can-didacy for state representative last week, running in Charlie Howard’s district. Charlie claims he is running but there are those of us who think he won’t. And Sugar Land city councilwom-an Jacquie Chaumette has not only already announced, but she has moved her residence after Charlie gerrymandered her and about 20 of her neighbors out

of his district, lined up support from many of the leaders in the district and sends out campaign updates every week. I think Sonal is swimming against the tide and she has barely started.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like Jacquie. I’ve heard complaints from some who feel she is a little over self-promoting, but when I quiz them closely and ask if they still like her, they admit they do. I always point out that since she is small in stature and very black, she

HAS to self-promote to get any attention at all. Someone told me, “Hell, I’d respect her for her wardrobe alone!” making refer-ence to the fact that Chaumette is always faultless dressed and has the aura to carry it off.

What those that don’t know her don’t readily see is that she is highly educated, reasoned, and smart to boot. She has had many honors and continues to expand her horizons.

And that is not to short Sonal Bhuchar who has many of the same qualities. However, Sonal made a lot of enemies as the former president of the FBISD school board. That disapproval that many feel for the superin-tendent, Dr. Tim Jenney, is also transferred to Bhuchar, as these same people feel she never ques-tioned Jenney’s decisions.

Of course, the political ques-tion is whether Charlie Howard will run. Charlie promised his supporters long ago that he would only serve two terms, a promise he broke and claimed that he said THREE terms. After three terms, he avoided the ques-tion and usually said that he would quit when someone HE felt would do a good job came along.

Charlie has the stereotypical politician’s ability to forget what he told you before. I’m too much a lady to call him a liar, but I’ve noticed that his pants are on fire.

For example, he claims he didn’t gerrymander Jacquie out of his district because he didn’t even know where she lives. Jacquie thinks that is funny since Charlie and his wife have been in her home before, as recently as last Christmas. Guess he didn’t know where he was going.

Those are minor things but are the picture of how I think he deals with the truth.

There must be some reason that Charlie hasn’t quit before

now because he would make much more money in retirement than as a state representative. State representatives get paid so little ($600 per month) as com-pared to their retirement ben-efit which isn’t that bad. It’s calculated on the salary of a state district court judge which is $125,000 yearly. You can retire at age 60 after 8 years of ser-vice or 12 years to retire at age 50. The longer you stay on the job, the better your pension even though you were making $7,200 annually. One Texas legisla-tor who never made more than that, retired after 39 years for an annual pension of $92,704. That’s not bad considering you are in session only 149 days every other year.

Charlie has been state rep since 1995.

So why is he still running since he is certainly able to retire? I believe it is because no one that he can control or who is like-minded has agreed to run. And with former county chair-man Rick Miller standing on the sidelines, I think if Charlie thinks Rick can beat the two

women, then he will not run and support Rick. If he doesn’t think Rick can beat the two women, then he will continue to run.

However, I do think Charlie may have met his match this time. I believe the voters are unhappy with how the current legislature handled the budget crisis, resulting in massive cut-ting of school funds, and they will express their unhappiness at the ballot box.

And other candidates.....The new district, #85, which covers most of Richmond/Rosenberg, Needville, Wharton, and part of Austin County, is seeing candi-dates line up if the justice depart-ment lets the redistricting stand. The Democrats have won the first round but I’d be surprised if the lines didn’t stand.

Anyway, two Republican precinct chairs have expressed an interest in running--Bruce Fleming and Craig LaTulle and then, the surprise of all, Lee Duggan III, the son of the former mayor of Sugar Land.

Lee III was also the presi-dent of the Central Appraisal District board recently, a job that

might not make him popular, but would give him name identity. I didn’t realize he lived in the new district, but those Duggans (they won’t like me saying this) have land all over, so he might have some acreage in one of the three countries in the district.

Pat Hebert’s birthday....I was very disheartened to learn that Pat Hebert, wife of County Judge Bob Hebert, is younger than I. Her birthday was this week; mine was in April.

Not only that, but she had a much bigger blowout. However, it was all for a good cause. You were asked to bring food for the food pantry, and I heard they collected, according to the last count, about 2,010 pounds, plus about $1,000 in checks and cash. That was great! I’ve known Bob and Pat Hebert since our days in Alief and I have great respect for both of them and their dedica-tion to their community.

Be sure and see the October issue of Fort Bend Focus for photos and some more of my musings on the subject and all the people there.

Okay, I just can’t stand it.....Even though I got some very encouraging mail from people about my columns about the national political scene, I told myself I wasn’t going to write about it because Fort Bend is such a Tea Party county that my rantings fall on deaf ears. And many people, if they disagree with you about one thing, they don’t trust anything else you say or write about. Since I have some local people who I really care about, I hate to muddy up the waters when I get into party

politics.But I just can’t stand it. I’ve

been watching about the Libya situation and it just torques my jaw when I see Republicans con-tinue to criticize Obama about his handling of the Libyan ques-tion. It looks as if Libya has overthrown a dictator with help from the U.S. with us spending little money, getting cooperation from a diverse group of foreign allies, no loss of one American life, and still the Republicans can’t bring themselves to do any-thing but criticize Obama. What

is that saying? “They wouldn’t be happy if we hung them with a new rope!”

I used to think it was a black thing. But after all, Obama is half white, so maybe it’s some-thing else. I’ve now come to the conclusion that it’s a Democrat thing. They hate him because he is a Democrat. They hated Bill Clinton just as much. Hell, they even impeached him for having sex in the White House.

Republicans refuse to believe that anybody can run the country as good as they can. They would hate any Democrat in the White House.

We didn’t treat George Bush like that. We will feel the effects of George Bush’s presidency for several generations (my family is still emotionally paying for los-ing my uncle in World War II and that was a righteous war), but we don’t question his religion, par-entage, or love of country.

I have a message for Republicans: Democrats can love their country just as much as Republicans.

And I have a message for Congressional Republicans: This is becoming a class war. This economy is hurting the lower and middle class much more than anyone else, and we know who you are protecting.

I’m pretty much middle class. I don’t make $200,000 per year. My retirement has been decimat-ed. This economy is hurting my business and my income. I don’t blame Obama. I blame the politi-cal leaders who can’t get along long enough to figure it out. I’m going to vote accordingly. If you make under $200,000 per year and you vote Republican, you're crazy!

By Elsa MaxeyIn Sugar Land, you may have

noticed the pipes at the U.S. 90A bridge over by Brooks Street and Bayview. According to the city, this is part of the interceptor reha-bilitation project. It is a project in a second phase involving East and West interceptor mains.

The pipeline is a bypass for the interceptor project, which Sugar Land reports is bypassing sewer from a manhole on Ulrich over to the sewer system on Bayview. It is in place temporarily to reroute sewer flows so the permanent line can be rehabilitated. While it looks like the pipe is taking in water from Oyster Creek since it seems to curl under the bridge, the city reports that is not the case. It also advises that the line runs under the 90A bridge at Oyster Creek and into the city's storm sewer to cross Bayview and enter the sewer system through a man-hole on the east side of Bayview.

The pipe stretches for about a quarter of a block over the

Oyster Creek bridge looking as one resident said, “like a giant earthworm.” Sugar Land said the temporary bypass will be there a couple of months.

The project is part of a rec-ommended multi-year phased rehabilitation of the North collec-tion system. Two interceptor lines were constructed in 1974 and 1985, and it will cost $2.2 million plus for rehabilitating a deteriorat-ing collection system, part of criti-cal infrastructure. There are more repairs to come. According to the city, an evaluation of the East and West interceptors will take about $5.5 million in repairs or replace-

By LeaAnne Klentzman Saturday was eventful at First

Colony Mall. Sugar Land Police were called

to the mall more than a couple of times Saturday afternoon. Two of the most notable cases were to deal with an aggravated assault and a fleet footed thief.

The first indication of trouble surfaced at about 3:15 Saturday afternoon when a man notified an off duty officer, who was working security, that some boys had pulled a knife on him near the JC Penney’s entrance. Once the facts were sorted out, officers learned that a verbal altercation began over a parking space had occurred in the parking lot. The parties involved were a group of teens and an off duty Harris County deputy sheriff. A second verbal conflict erupted when all parties attempted to enter the Mall at the same JC Penney’s entrance.

At some point during the sec-

ond verbal exchange, one of the teens, not knowing the man was an off duty officer, pulled a knife from his pocket, opened it, then began yelling and threatening the off duty deputy. The knife wield-ing teen was taken into custody for aggravated assault.

Some two hours later, another off duty Sugar Land officer who happened to be working security at the Mall attempted to stop a theft suspect who decided bet-ter to run than to talk. That fleet footed thief was nabbed by more off duty police personnel who were also working security. After the foot chase, which added an evading charge to the suspect‘s laundry list of offenses, he con-tinued to fight with police thus garnering him a resisting arrest charge as well.

By Saturday night, mall secu-rity, loss prevention officers, and all the police who were working extra security were glad to see the stores close.

By Elsa MaxeyNot even a year has lapsed

since Missouri City consid-ered the approval of a pre-liminary plat for Watermark at Sienna Plantation, a new upscale apartment community off State Highway 6. News about it is amidst the down-scaling of apartment units on a pending proposal for the Imperial Redevelopment proj-ect.

With exposure to about 60,000 cars a day, according to developers, the apartment homes project, the majority of which is in Missouri City’s ETJ (extra territorial juris-diction), is within view from State Highway 6 at Sienna Ranch Road. But, it’s about 20 miles from where the StarTex Power field for the Skeeters’ minor league team is being built. That’s where the other multifamily apartment com-munity is proposed and pend-ing approval for development.

A total of what are called 240 Class A apartment homes, defined as luxury units, will be available next year in this area, near where Metro com-muter service to the medi-cal center and downtown Houston is now available. Reports indicate Watermark Residential closed earlier this month on what the city con-firmed is a 10-acre proper-

ty for Watermark at Sienna Plantation. The upcoming multifamily development is part of the 10,500-acre mixed-use, Sienna Plantation master planned community that has Fort Bend County residents already living in a 270-unit apartment community and in more than 20,000 homes valued in the millions with numerous amenities.

The new apartment home community will have one to three bedrooms renting for up to $1,750 a month for a 1,449 sq ft unit, according to a floor plan summary provided by the city with projected rental rates. Missouri City reports that since the project is in its ETJ, it will not review the construction plans. In accor-dance with a Sienna Plantation Development Agreement, Sienna has contracted with a third-party reviewer to inspect the plans.

Leasing at Watermark at Sienna Plantation is expect-ed to begin this upcoming January and construction is expected to be completed in October 2012.

The multifamily hous-ing developer, Watermark Residential, is currently developing projects in Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana.

Construction begins for Class A apartments off SH 6

The Sugar Land Democrats Club held their first major fundraising event on Saturday, August 6 at the Sugar Land Social Club. Jim Hightower was the keynote speaker. Hightower is a National Radio Commentator, writer, public speaker, and author of the book Swim Against the Current: Even a Dead Fish Can Go With the Flow. He reminded the audience

“Under Governor Rick Perry’s leadership Texas is number one where we should be number fifty and number fifty where we should be number one.

For example, Texas is num-ber one in the percent of unin-sured children and we are num-ber fifty in percent of popula-tion aged 25 and older with a high school diploma.” After Mr. Hightower’s presentation Barnes and Noble Bookstore of Sugar Land was on hand and Mr. Hightower autographed over 30 books.

Gilberto Hinojosa, candidate for Chairperson of the Texas State Democratic Party was also in attendance. Mr. Hinojosa expressed his vision to increase the voter strength of all Texas Democrats, especially the growing Hispanic population in Texas. Mr. Hinojosa said, “We Democrats have to start talking more like Democrats and speak to the core values of our Party – equality, justice, education.”

Closing out the ceremony,

"Q" Imam - Co-Founder and Co-Chair Sugar Land Democrats Club; Deron Patterson - Co-Founder and Co-Chair Sugar Land Democrats Club; Jim Hightower, former State of Texas Secretary of Agriculture, writer, National Radio Commentator; Gilberto Hinojosa, Candidate for Chairperson Texas Democratic Party; and Lenora Sorola-Pohlman, Vice-Chair Texas Democratic Party.

Mr. “Q” Imam, Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Sugar Land Democrats Club told the audi-ence that he had broken his fast for the day and said, “Happy Ramadan”. “Q” then told us he is a Democrat because the Democratic Party celebrates openly and heartily the diversity of all peoples.

On Saturday and Sunday,

October 22-23, Sugar Land Democrats Club will participate in the Dragon Boat Regatta. The Sugar Land Democrats Club challenges the Republicans of Sugar Land to a Dragon Boat race. But, beware…for Deron Patterson, Co-Chair of the Sugar Land Democrats Club is a Dragon according to the Chinese Zodiac Calendar!

YMCA kicks off camp exploratory committeeRecently, the boards of the Fort

Bend and TW Davis YMCAs announced the establishment of an Exploratory Committee to develop a YMCA Camp in Fort Bend County.

Jocelyn Gordon, Energy Orientation Manager for Champion Energy Services, stated “Champion Energy is very excited and proud to be an early community supporter of the YMCA’s efforts to bring a Y youth camp experience to Fort Bend County”.

During the event, Charlie Myer, Regional Advancement Officer for the YMCA, announced that the new Camp Exploratory Committee would be Co-Chaired by two Fort Bend County vol-unteer legends Mike Flory and Marshall Whichard. Both Flory and Whichard are former Board Chairs and Volunteers of the Year for the YMCA. The trio went on to outline that the commit-tee is initially looking at a pos-sible location as the Bates Allen County Park in Kendleton, TX. The Bates Allen Park, a Fort Bend County facility, is a 235 acre park nestled on the San Bernard River and includes two lakes, walking trails, pavilions and several other amenities. “We are currently in preliminary conversations about partnering on the camp with Fort Bend County and Kendleton pub-lic officials”, stated Mike Flory, Committee Co-Chair.

The inspiration for the camp came about after members of the YMCA Outreach Committee and County personnel were dis-cussing the development of an additional program outreach site, when the conversations turned to

the ever growing need to get Fort Bend youth more opportunities to enjoy and appreciate the great outdoor environments in Fort Bend County.

Over the coming months, the YMCA Camp Exploratory Committee will be looking at the feasibility of a camp develop-ment, finalizing possible locations and garnering initial support for the proposed camp.

For more information about the YMCA go to www.ymca-houston.org.

I'm Sick and Tired...I’m sick

and tired of liberal demo-crats lecturing the public to t o n e - d o w n the political rhetoric. In other words, if you have a philosophical

difference and you refuse to com-promise on your principals, then you are extreme.

Tell that to Rep. Maxine Waters (Democrat, California). This lib-eral democrat made sure her hus-band’s bank received TARP funds even though the bank should have been taken over due to its low capital to asset ratio. Prior to that she berated oil company execu-tives at a Congressional hearings where she admitted, ‘...this liberal will be all about socialize... uh, uh, uh, will be all about basically, uh taking over and the government running all of your companies’. Another proud liberal democrat exposed by the words coming out of her mouth. See for yourself on You Tube.

During the republican presi-dential debate last week not one of the candidates would agree to $10 in spending cuts for $1 in increased taxes. Every political talk-show host quoted that as an example of the Tea Party run-ning the Republican Party. I was

pleasantly surprised that every candidate was smart enough not to fall for that trap. It was the only moment in the debate that I cheered out loud.

They could see the headline... Candidate so-in-so agrees to tax increase.

Every tax dollar out of our pocket is a dollar poured down a rat-hole. The over-reaching fed-eral government does not create one job with that money.

They are trying to disguise a tax increase by calling it tax reform. When the talking heads on TV or a politician says the words “tax reform” just “hear” the word “tax increase”. You see, there is no reform, just deduction take-aways and nothing else.

Call your congressman today and tell him the only tax reform you want to see is a flat tax or replacing the federal income tax with a national sales tax. These measures are true tax reform. Anything else is just a tax increase.

Remember, the Bush tax cuts gave a tax cut to every single income taxpayer in the United States. That is not enough for the liberal democrats. Bush real-ly got their goat when he gave an income tax cut to everyone instead of just the rich. You can tell because they still repeat that lie today.

He brought down the high-

est marginal rate from 39.6% to 35% and revenue to the treasury increased. Just 4.6 percentage points has driven these democrats crazy. That 4% is your money, not the governments and not the liberal democrat that argues with you that the government should have that money (to pour down a rat-hole).

The liberal democrat that argues for this tax increase wants to redistribute wealth and nothing more. Let me tell you something, we redistribute wealth ourselves. We distribute it to our churches and charities and non-profits that deserve our wealth and actually get it to people that need help.

These haters of wealth cre-ation will site statistics that “prove” the highest income earn-ers are increasing wealth while the lowest income earners are losing wealth and then say ‘see, we need to increase taxes on those evil rich people’. All they want is to redistribute wealth and nothing else. In fact, the Bush tax cuts for everyone, decreased the percentage on the lowest mar-ginal rate more than on the high-est marginal rate.

Never mind what will happen to job creation after the govern-ment takes $500 billion a year out of the private sector through tax increases if they let the Bush tax cuts expire.

Don’t forget, if you let the Bush tax cuts expire there will be a higher tax rate on the lowest income taxpayers. So, whenever anyone complains about the Bush

tax cuts just ask him or her why they want a tax increase on the poor.

What happened to good old fashion service asks readerI’m wondering what is happen-

ing to good old fashion service when you go into a restaurant, especially one that is just opening up. We went to the new Boggies at Dulles and Cartwright and sat down to order. I ordered the burg-er that came with fries and my wife decided on the turkey burger that came with fries. Both were clearly printed on the menu that fries were included. The wait-ress asked if I wanted fries and I pointed out that fries were already included and she said that no they were not but they were included with the turkey burger. We said okay, burger without fries and turkey burger with fries.

About 15 minutes later she came back and said that she was sorry but they had no turkey meat for a turkey burger but could give us a chicken sandwich, but of course it didn’t include fries. Dang, how am I gonna’ get my fries… $6.99 for a burger with no fries, I’m not paying that much and not getting fries. We left.

Our next stop was Carl’s Jr where we ordered the above order and got it fairly quickly, I had my fries. I was almost finished with my burger and needed a to-go

order for my son. I ordered, paid, sat down, and waited, and waited, and waited. Folks who came in 10 minutes after I made my to-go order were eating and almost fin-ished. They lost my order.

What is happening to the food service industry? I know, they must have been former congress-men and senators.

FOOT FACTSby Dr. Eric Tepper

BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS

STANDING OVATION An individual’s posture helps determine how he or she stands and

moves. Poor posture negatively affects the feet by causing the ankle of the weight-bearing foot to roll inward. This is referred to as “hyperpronation.” This state causes the person to develop gait problems, and the resulting instability typically manifests itself in balance issues. Poor posture and hyperpronation can result in painful sensations in the hips, back, and neck. They cause an abnormal load on the muscles, ligaments, and joints. Should a structural imbalance in the feet adversely affect your posture, your podiatrist may offer foot orthotics to assist you in achieving and maintaining proper balance when running, walking, and standing.

When your feet cause you pain, there are many steps you can take to get relief. The first, and probably most important, is a visit to visit us at . When balance issues and other foot problems have got you down, let us do what we do best—diagnose and treat the problem so you’re back on your feet quickly and painlessly. Located at 3143 Hwy. 6 South, we are currently accepting new patients for complete podiatric care in a friendly, comfortable atmosphere. Please call us at 281-980-3668 for an appoint-ment. Don't take your feet for granted - make your next step a comfortable one - call us for an appointment

Pet of the weekThe excitement was palpable

at the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce when Fort Bend Cares gathered to present grants totaling $140,000. Now entering its seventh year, Fort Bend Cares is making a powerful impact on the charities of Fort Bend County. Twenty nine worthy organiza-tions that serve disadvantaged children and youth of Fort Bend received a check.

To date, Fort Bend Cares has distributed approximately $720,000 in designated grants. The grant applications are evalu-ated and put through rigorous analysis by a group of 30 local citizens who serve on the grant committee.

Jill Curtis, Executive Director, said, “We are thrilled to be able to support so many committed organizations that are doing such valuable work. The people in Fort Bend continue to recognize the needs in our community and they react by contributing generously.”

This year’s recipients are Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Boy Scouts of America, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Houston, Breath of Life Children’s Center, Casa de Esperanza de Los Ninos,

Houston home sales rise again in JulyAccording to the latest month-

ly data compiled by the Houston Association of REALTORS® (HAR), July sales of single-fam-ily homes rose 16.7 percent ver-sus one year earlier. That third increase of the year followed gains in January and June. All segments of the housing mar-ket, from the sub-$80,000 to the $500,000 and above, experienced positive sales. On a year-to-date basis, sales declined 2.2 percent. Compared to July of 2009, a year with no unusual market factors like Hurricane Ike in 2008 and the 2010 tax credit, single-family home sales were down 12.2 per-cent.

“It is still premature to label this latest increase in home sales a true positive indicator, but with the effects of last year’s tax credit

fading and local employment figures strengthening, we should soon have an accurate reading on the Houston real estate market,” said Carlos P. Bujosa, HAR chair-man and VP at Transwestern. “I believe the year-to-date and July 2009 comparisons probably yield the most realistic picture of what’s happening locally, and that places Houston in an enviable position when you see how other real estate markets around the country continue to struggle.

Month-end pending sales for July totaled 3,659, up 12.0 percent from last year. The rate is moving more in line with levels typically seen during the summer home sales months, but still reflects the rapid pace at which 2010 sales went under contract in advance of the tax credit closing deadline.

By LeaAnne Klentzman Late Saturday night, about

11:12, Sugar Land Police were dispatched to a home on Farmington Lane after a reported car burglary.

Reportedly, a homeowner wit-nessed someone break out the window of his car then flee the area in a vehicle. The homeowner was able to provide police with a vehicle description and partial license plate.

Sugar Land officers began to search the area for the sus-pect vehicle and located it near Highway 6 and Lexington Boulevard. After a traffic stop and the ensuing investigation, the sus-pect was taken into custody and charged with criminal mischief.

Mischief in Sugar Land

Sienna Crossing Elementary School fourth-grade student, Nathaniel Lacewell, was on a winning team at the Prime Time Sports 2011 National Basketball Championship games. The competition offered more than 40 events, for both girls and boys, in four states this summer. Lacewell and his Gulf Coast Blue Chips teammates won the championship title in the 3rd Grade Boys’ division of the basket-ball competition, held July 28-31 in Dallas. In their final game, the Gulf Coast Blue Chips defeated the Dawgs with a score of 57 to 9.

With potential benefits such as quicker recovery and less pain, minimally invasive surgery has become popular for a variety of surgical procedures. For some operations, such as gallbladder removal, it is more widely used than conventional open surgery.

Minimally invasive surgery, also called laparoscopic or endo-scopic surgery, may require a few incisions of less than a half-inch each, compared with an incision of 5 to 8 inches or longer with open surgery. The surgeon inserts a rigid scope consisting of a camera and light into a port through one of the incisions. Images are sent to a screen, which the surgeon watches while performing the surgery using instruments insert-ed through one or more of the other incisions.

“Not all surgeries can be per-formed using minimally invasive techniques, but the list is grow-ing,” says Timothy Oppermann, M.D., board-certified general surgeon and on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “Major cancer, heart or other surger-ies may require a more open surgical field. In some instanc-

es — even if a laparoscopic procedure is p e r f o r m e d routinely — a physician may determine that a particular patient is not a good candidate

based on his or her overall health or surgical history.”

However, when laparoscopic surgery is determined to be a good option, it may offer the fol-lowing benefits:

• Shorter recovery time. Since small incisions usually heal faster than large ones, some surgeries can be done on an out-patient basis. Surgical patients who are admitted to the hospi-tal may be released sooner and return to their regular activities faster.

• Less pain. Smaller incisions generally mean less post-opera-tive pain.

• Lower risk of infection. Smaller wounds are generally at less risk of infection.

• Less blood loss. The tiny incisions involved in minimally invasive surgery can usually

Timothy Oppermann

result in less blood loss than would be experienced with open surgery.

• Less scarring. This can be a significant consideration for some patients.

“Gallbladder removals, hernia surgeries and appendectomies are among the most commonly performed minimally invasive procedures,” Dr. Oppermann says. “Minimally invasive tech-niques are now used in most fields of surgery.” Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has been in the forefront offering minimally invasive surgical options in the following specialties:

• Bariatric • Cardiovascular • Colorectal • Gastroenterology • General Surgery • Gynecology • Neurosurgery • Otorhinolaryngology • Orthopedics • UrologyIf you are anticipating surgery

or want a second opinion, Dr. Oppermann will discuss your options with you and determine whether minimally invasive surgery is appropriate for you. For an appointment with Dr. Oppermann, call 281-275-0860.

By LeaAnne Klentzman Missouri City Police were

working on a missing persons ‘cold case’ when they happen upon a 9 year old homicide.

In November of 2002, Christopher Allen Daigle, of Missouri City went missing. At the time of his disappearance he was presumed to have been a runaway.

Recently, Missouri City detectives reopened the old case on Daigle and began to ferret through the infor-mation with a fresh perspective. Almost right away, the detective working the case hit pay dirt when he interviewed one of the last people listed as having seen Daigle before his disappearance.

According to reports, Daigle, then 17, and some friends trav-

eled to far southeast Fort Bend County, near Brazoria County to party. During that outing Daigle was killed. No further details have been released.

However, with the informa-tion obtained by Missouri City

Police, the crime scene where Daigle was pur-ported to have been murdered was located and some human bones were recovered. Once the crime scene was established, Missouri City personnel along with Sheriff’s personnel

searched that area for evidence. The murder is believed to have occurred in the county‘s juris-diction; the missing persons case was filed in Missouri City.

Based on all aspects of Missouri City’s investigation, a murder warrant was issued Aug.

Treatment of High Calcium LevelsHypercalcemia is a condition of an above normal calcium level in the

blood. Calcium facilitates the formation of our bones, and is also involved in muscle contractions, the release of hormones, and the maintenance of functions of nerves and the brain. Certain medical conditions may lead to hypercalcemia, including certain types of cancer. Hypercalcemia may also be caused by certain medications, such as lithium and thiazide diuretics. Symptoms of hypercalcemia may include constipation, fatigue, and depression, although persons with the condition may not experience any symptoms. Muscle weakness, dehydration, ad nausea are other possible symptoms.

Calcitonin (Miacalcin) is a medication available with a prescription that works to decrease the calcium concentration in the blood by increasing the amount of calcium that is excreted by the body, and also decreasing bone reabsorption. Bisphosphonates also may be prescribed for persons with hypercalcemia. These medications work by disrupting bone resorption and therefore inhibiting calcium release. Pamidronate (Aredia), etidronate (Didronel), and ibandronate (Boniva) are examples of bisphosphonates. Zoledronic acid (Reclast, Zometa) is also a bisphosphonate that may be prescribed for persons with this condition.

Mandatory water restrictions in place ............................................................................................................from page 1

That accounts for over 8,000 Missouri City residents since all of MUD No. 9 is in that city.

Last week on Wednesday, Stage 2 of the Drought Contingency Plan for this MUD was imple-mented and it took effect imme-diately after a brief Stage One period, said Taylor.

Prohibitions at this time include:

• Washing down sidewalks, walkways, driveways, parking lots, tennis courts or other hard-surfaced areas

• Washing down buildings or

structures other than for immedi-ate fire protection

• Using water for dust control• Flushing gutters or allowing

water to run or accumulate in gut-ters or streets

• Failing to repair a water leak within a reasonable period after notice has been given about the needed repair

First Colony MUD No.9 also has limits for irrigating landscaped areas with sprinklers—like doing it certain days of the week in accordance with address number endings, and only between mid-

night and 10 a.m. and between 8 p.m. and midnight. These limits also apply to washing cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, trailers, even airplanes and other vehicles, and only with hand-held buckets and hoses.

If you live in this MUD dis-trict, in order to fill or add water to indoor or outdoor swimming pools, wading pools or Jacuzzi-type pools, you’ll have to wait for the designated watering days. Also, no ornamental fountain or pond for scenic purposes is allowed, except to support aquatic

block of Beechnut, in far north-east Fort Bend County, was robbed at 9 am that Saturday morning by two masked males. Another male, reportedly an accomplice, was waiting outside in the getaway car.

Haenel said two males entered the store that morning with shot-

guns drawn. One suspect jumped the counter, struck the clerk, then attempted to rip the cash drawer from the register, said Haenel. He also said, “The second sub-ject forced customers to the floor and demanded they give up their wallets.” While that suspect was looting the customers, he kicked

life or when the fountains and ponds have recirculation systems.

Fire hydrant water use is lim-ited to fire fighting, and when nec-essary to maintain public health, safety and welfare. Restaurant business customers are also pro-hibited from serving water to patrons, except when requested. The water district may be called for more information at 281-499-5539, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Sugar LandIn the meantime, Sugar Land

reports that due to the ongoing drought conditions and the state-wide disaster proclamation from Governor Rick Perry, earlier this summer it asked residents, busi-nesses, and homeowners asso-ciations to voluntarily cut back on outdoor water usage to help spread and balance peak water demands. On Monday, Sugar Land spokesperson Doug Adolph said that although the city has ample groundwater supplies, “the TCEQ has requested all Brazos basin water users voluntarily reduce water use to help ensure an adequate water supply.” Sugar Land’s Voluntary Water Use Schedule is intended to distribute customers' water use throughout the week and throughout the day. The city reports that 60% of its water demand is used for irriga-tion and changing irrigation times reduces the early morning demand coupled with twice a week water-ing, which distributes water use and reduces drastic water use spikes in demand.

Adolph said that the city’s sys-tem is designed to deliver adequate water, but “when everyone uses the water during the same time period, on the same day of the week, the pumps and production system become stressed.” Check the Sugar Land’s website for spe-cific tips. For example, grass in the shade may need water only once per week. There’s also a Sugar Land W.I.S.E. Guys program for evaluating irrigation systems.

Meadows PlaceMeadows Place Mayor Charles

Jessup advises that its city “has no restrictions and does not foresee the need to call for restrictions in the immediate future.”

Missouri CityMissouri City, already affect-

ed by the First Colony MUD No. water restrictions, reports that this is the only water sup-plier with mandatory restrictions about which it is aware. “The remaining either are asking their customers for voluntary conser-vation or no restrictions at all,” said Communications Director Barbara Brescian. one victim and hit another in the head with the butt of his shotgun.

Although there were as many as 10 customers in the store, sev-eral were able to seek refuge by hiding in the back of the store.

Haenel described the shotgun toting suspects as Hispanic males. One was wearing black pants, a black hoodie and a red bandanna over his face. The other was wear-ing gray shorts, a dark-colored shirt and had a dark-colored mask over his face. A third possible suspect was identified as a black male who was waiting outside the store in a blue four-door Ford Taurus, which authorities believe to be the get-away vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office at 281-341-4665 or Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers, Inc. at (281) 342-TIPS (8477).

Parade scheduled to honor Rosenberg National Little League on August 27 .................from page 1

Avenue J, where it will cross over to 3rd Street and continue through downtown to 3rd Street Park.

Mayor Morales stated, “The young men who make up the 13 and 14 year old All Stars are excellent representatives of our community and the RNLL as a whole. Their hard work and focus exemplifies the Little

League pledge to always do one’s best, and is a testament to the quality of the Rosenberg program, and the successes of RNLL in molding young men and women of character, courage and loyalty through its baseball and softball programs.”

Saturday’s parade will cele-brate the 13 and 14 year old All Star’s World Series run, and will

progress from City Hall to 3rd Street Park (800 3rd Street in Historic Downtown Rosenberg). A rally hosted by the Downtown Merchants of Rosenberg (DMOR) and RNLL will follow the parade in 3rd Street Park. 3rd Street will be closed from Avenue H to Avenue F to accom-modate those wishing to partici-pate in the parade and rally.

Mayor Morales continued, “I call on all citizens and business-es in the community to show your RNLL pride by wearing red and coming out for the parade and rally on Saturday, and by decorating your homes and businesses to show your support and thanks for the team’s stellar representation of the Rosenberg we all know and love to the rest of the State and Nation.”

has 16 MUDs and two water con-trol and improvement districts providing water to residents.

StaffordOne of those water control and

improvement districts, Fort Bend WCID No. 2, serves a portion of Missouri City and all of the residents in Stafford. It reports that it has not issued water restric-tions, voluntary or mandatory, to its customers. Due to many years of planning, it also indicates it has an adequate water supply and infrastructure. “We are permit-ted to pump two billion gallons of water annually, we have an additional four billion gallons per year (of) available water supply,” said Owen Matherne, General Manager. However, Matherne said the district is asking custom-ers that even with this surplus of water “to conserve and not waste this precious resource.”

RosenbergOn the other side of the Brazos,

the City of Rosenberg said it is not currently under any water restric-tions. “Due to the drought, we are encouraging residents to be smart about their water usage,” said Rosenberg’s Communications

Director Angela E. Fritz. “We monitor our water system con-tinually,” she said, noting that the city would implement necessary restrictions in accordance with its Drought Contingency Plan. Not unlike other water providers, Rosenberg’s first step called for in the plan is voluntary restrictions.

RichmondFort Bend County’s seat,

Richmond, does not have any water restrictions at this time. “Not currently,” said City Manager Teri Vela, and “we are just watching and monitoring the situation daily and when we reach our threshold,” the Stage One voluntary restrictions will be declared. Vela said that would mean operating three days at 75 percent peak pumpage.

FulshearThe City of Fulshear in north-

west Fort Bend County has vol-untary water rationing underway as per Stage One of its Drought Contingency Plan. Residents, businesses, and homeowner asso-ciations are being asked to vol-untarily cut back on all outdoor water usage to help balance peak water demands.

Rep. Pete Olson (R-Sugar Land) spoke to the Sugar Land Rotary yesterday about recent events in Washington and next steps to address the crisis of spending. He took questions about the vote to increase the debt ceiling and enact cuts to federal spending. He also pro-

vided an update on efforts in the House to promote energy production and job creation.

"Washington doesn't have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem, but we can-not fix this problem overnight, Olson said. “This agreement was far from perfect, but it is an

important step toward fiscal balance. It guar-antees a vote in the House and Senate on a bal-anced budget constitutional

amendment and cuts spending

by by more than it increases the debt ceiling. This agree-ment achieves two-thirds of the House Budget Discretionary spending cuts.

Each vote we take each is an opportunity to cut more spend-ing and get this nation back on track."

SL Central prison unit to be emptied out by end of August ....from page 1housed there were sent to other prisons earlier in the month, according to accounts.

What is understood about the prison closure is that it was fueled by the state’s budget shortfall. It represented an opportunity for Texas to save $12.5 million a year and it came to pass.

And now, Sugar Land, itself, will have made history with the prison closure, too. The city will have been the first in Texas to have had a prison closed. Bittersweet in more ways than one!

Parents in uproar about lateFort Bend ISD bus first school day ..............................................from page 1

Department to tell them they were waiting on a bus. After a couple of failed attempts to get a “live voice” for a status update to relieve their concerns, one of the parents said he told the dis-trict’s receptionist, “Don’t send me to a voice mail!” But, the Transportation Department was where he ended up again, with the voice mail recording on the other end.

The kids were finally dropped off at their bus stop close to 5 p.m. on Monday, an hour and a half late, reports one of the parents.

But before that, the frustrated and worried group of parents’

alternative to get some kind of res-olution was to “call the newspa-per,” and they did. As the incident was being related to the "Star" over a cell phone, the school bus arrived and parents could be heard, elated to see that their kids were fine and had not been sub-jected to any of their worst fears.

FBISD Communications Director Nancy Porter said it was the first day of school, “and buses generally run multiple routes.” She said it took lon-ger to load the buses to make sure everyone was on the right bus, and also said the buses were running late in the Belknap

Brookside neighborhood.Should this situation repeat

itself, that is, a parent is not able to speak to someone in the Transportation Department’s office after 5 p.m., and is con-cerned about their child being late, Porter asks that the child’s school be called or alternatively, the Fort Bend ISD Police Dispatch at 281-634-5500, which has an operator on duty 24/7.

FBISD provides bus transporta-tion services to more than 36,000 students daily, “and the staff is working diligently to resolve all transportation issues in a timely manner,” said Porter.

Child Advocates of Fort Bend staff and guests celebrated the agency’s 20th anniversary on Wednesday evening with an open house. Ruthanne Mefford, Child Advocates of Fort Bend’s Executive Director, thanked all of the guests and reminded everyone that “without the involvement of everyone in the room, the vision to start the first and only program for abused and neglected children

in Fort Bend County would never have come to fruition. Formed in 1991 with a volunteer Executive Director and one foster child, the agency now has 24 full-time staff members, 800 trained volunteers and served 1,391 children last year.”

Texas State Representative John Zerwas was presented with a “Big Voice For Little Texans” award during the short ceremony.

The award is reserved for legis-lators who exhibited leadership during the legislative session in making foster children a priority.

“In 1991, Suzanne Kern and Judge Stansbury had the vision to build a community of volunteers who would be specially trained to advocate for children in the foster care system who had suffered the tragedy of abuse and neglect, these volunteers would provide

a voice for the children so they didn’t fall through the cracks of the legal system. I doubt they ever imagined that we would grow from a rented office space in a strip mall to a building where we could office side by side with our partners to better help children and truly become a “full service”, “one stop shop” for child vic-tims and their families,” stated Mefford.

State Representative John Zerwas was presented with a “Big Voice for Little Texans award during Child Advocates of Fort Bend’s anniversary celebration on Wednesday evening. Shown (L to R) are Judge Ronald Pope, Texas CASA Representative Andrea Sparks, Child Advocates of Fort Bend Executive Director Ruthanne Mefford and Representative Zerwas.

On September 15, Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) will launch a new online catalog sys-tem by Polaris Library Systems, a leading provider of library-auto-mation technology. The upgrade to Polaris replaces an integrated library system (ILS) that is more than 12 years old.

The upgrade to Polaris marks a new era in FBCL’s online library experience. In addition to the online library catalog, Polaris also

encompasses the customer data-base and circulation system that is used to check items in and out. The new system will provide a more efficient means to manage resources, reduce costs, boost pro-ductivity, and improve customer satisfaction. Library users will save time and get better search results with the Polaris system’s improved searching ability and ease-of-use.

The conversion to this new sys-

tem is a huge endeavor, involving the transfer of more than 900,000 records for library materials and the accounts of more than 375,600 cardholders. Starting September 1, library customers will still be able to search the current online cata-log, but they cannot place holds until after the new system goes live on September 15.

Fort Bend County Libraries researched a number of possible ILS replacements prior to the deci-

sion to use Polaris. Each company was evaluated on the basis of func-tionality, as well as its research-and-development track record. After an extensive review process, the Polaris solution was selected as being the best fit for FBCL based on Polaris’ ability to incorporate new concepts and features.

For more information about the transition to Polaris, watch for updates on the library’s webpage – www.fortbend.lib.tx.us.

Pictured l-r are: Jessica Humphrey, Mom – Jody Humphrey, Sister – Jasmine Humphrey.

The State Bank of Texas is sponsoring a blood drive on September 15, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Stafford branch location; 13010 Murphy Rd., Stafford, the phone number is 281-494-6686. The blood drive is for Jessica Humphrey who has been diagnosed with Immune Thrombocytopenic purpura (better known as ITP). She is scheduled to have kidney surgery on August 29. Jasmine (13 years old) will be donat-ing platelets for her sister’s surgery.

Jessica will turn 16 on August 31. We have known the Humphrey family for over 10 years. They have had a lot of hardship and trage-dy in their family and this is one way to “Pay It Forward” and help. Will you consider being a blood donor for this event? PLEASE CALL Megan Anderson to schedule a time to donate blood.

Jessica is a junior at Needville High School where is a member of the Texas High School Rodeo, Gulf Coast Barrel Racing, National Barrel Horse Association, Secretary of Texas 4-H, FFA, Fort Bend Youth Rodeo Association, she is the pitcher for the Needville High School Softball team and she is a cheerleader too! She has won the “Rodeo Saddle” several times and enjoys being outside, roping, goat tying and showing animals. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends when she isn’t busy at school, playing softball or involved with rodeo activities.

I n I m m u n e Thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) the blood doesn’t clot as it should due to a low num-ber of blood cell fragments called platelets or thrombo-cytes. Platelets are made in your bone marrow along with other kinds of blood cells. They stick together (clot) to seal small cuts or breaks on blood vessel walls and stop bleed-ing. Without enough platelets, bleeding can occur inside the body (internal bleeding) or underneath or from the skin (external bleeding).

Purpura refers to purple bruises caused by bleeding from small blood vessels under the skin. People with ITP often have bruises that appear on the skin or on the mucous mem-branes. They may also have bleeding that causes tiny red or purple dots on the skin known as petechiae that looks like a rash. A lot of bleeding can cause hematomas and that is a collection of clotted or partially clotted blood under the skin and looks like a lump.

Bleeding in the brain is a result of ITP. In most cases, an autoimmune response is thought to cause ITP. Normally, the immune system helps your

body fight off infections and diseases. If you have ITP, the immune system attacks and destroys its own platelets. To date, it is unknown why this

happens, but it cannot be passed from one person to another. To learn or verify information about ITP you should visit with your own physician.

If you love music and enjoy playing with others in a fun, relaxed setting, then the Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra may be just the place for you. The orchestra is currently accepting audition applicants for its 20th anniversary season and is particularly in need of additional string players

Shown are: Henry Watts (cello), Bethany Hildebrandt (French horn), Liesl Schindler (bassoon), Matt Tolman (trombone) and Jami Thomson (oboe).

Auditions will be held on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 3900 Lexington Blvd., in Missouri City. Candidates should prepare a three- to five-minute solo and be ready to demonstrate their sight-reading skills. Auditions are open to all musicians who are high school age and older.

In addition to violin, viola, cello, and bass players, FBSO has immediate openings for English horn, contrabassoon, tympani and percussion players. Both perma-nent and alternate positions are available with all musicians serv-ing as unpaid volunteers.

To schedule an appointment time, please e-mail [email protected] or call 281-276-9642.

Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings beginning at 7:15 p.m., generally at First United Methodist Church in Missouri City. This year, FBSO will play four concerts at the Stafford Centre as part of its season sub-scription series and a free concert at Sugar Land Town Square.
