Dear Parishioners, God’s chosen people in Israel and Judah be-lieved that anyone who was not Jewish was a lesser human being and could not be saved. Associating with Gentiles was forbidden. You were not to do business with them or even pass through their towns. Jesus’ frequent association with Gen-tiles was one of many strikes against him by the time he was led out to the cross, but it was also a fulfillment of

prophecy. Nearly eight centuries before Jesus was born, Isaiah prophesied that the coming of the Messiah would bring about the hope of salvation for all, even for foreigners who join themselves to the Lord. Whereas the Temple at Jerusalem was a house of worship only for the Jewish peo-ple, the Church to be founded on Peter would be a house of prayer for all peoples, especially and including the Gentiles and all those who previously did not know the one God or his son, Jesus Christ. Saul of Tarsus was an unlikely choice to become an Apostle, let alone one who would pursue the conversion primarily of Gentiles. As a Pharisee, Saul would have considered Gentiles to be unclean, and would have condemned them. Now as an Apostle, Paul seeks their conversion. Israel’s rejection of Jesus opened the door of the Gospel to the Gentiles, and Paul is anxious for their inclusion in the newly formed Church. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus rewards the Canaanite woman for her great faith by healing her daughter. For a moment, it seems as if Je-sus is agreeing with the Pharisees with whom he had been debating earlier in this same chapter of the Gospel. He refers to the Gentiles as “dogs,” a common reference used for them by the Pharisees. Jesus does this only to test her faith, and she shows that she believes that even she ─ a non-Jew, a Canaanite, a Gentile ─ is intended to share in the scraps that fall from the table of their masters, meaning she believes she, too, can be saved by the King of the Jews. The people in Jesus’ day spent too much time highlighting dif-ferences among people and emphasizing the things that divide them. We do the same today. Looking through the new eyes of faith, we are called to see that all are called to faith ─ to be children of God. Even though we may all be sinners, we can all be saved. Let us try to see one another with the eyes of faith ─ with the eyes of Jesus.

Fr. Tad

CALLED TO ACT IN GOD’S NAME

St Louis IX, King of France Third Order Franciscan ~ 1214-1270

Memorial August 25th

At his coronation as King of France, Louis bound himself by oath to behave as God’s anointed, as the father of his peo-ple and feudal lord of the King of Peace. Other kings had done the same, of course. Louis was different in that he actually inter-preted his kingly du-ties in the light of faith. After the vio-lence of two previous reigns, he brought peace and justice to France. He was crowned king at 12, at his fa-ther’s death. His

mother, Blanche of Castile, ruled during his minority. When he was 19 and his bride 12, he married to Margue-rite of Provence. It was a loving marriage, though was not without challenge. They had 10 children. Louis “took the cross” for a Crusade when he was 30. His army took Damietta on the Nile but not long after, weak-ened by dysentery and without support, they were sur-rounded and captured. Louis obtained the release of the army by giving up the city of Damietta in addition to paying a ransom. He stayed in Syria four years. He deserves credit for extending justice in civil ad-ministration. He drew up regulations for his officials which became the first of a series of reform laws. He replaced trial by battle with a form of examination of witnesses and encouraged the beginning of using written records in court. Louis was always respectful of the papacy, but defended royal interests against the popes and refused to acknowledge Innocent IV’s sentence against Emperor Frederick II. He was devoted to his people, founding hospitals, visiting the sick and, like his patron Saint Francis, caring even for people with leprosy. (He is one of the patrons of the Secular Franciscan Order.) Louis united France—lords and townsfolk, peasants and priests and knights—by the force of his personality and holiness. For many years the nation was at peace. Every day Louis had 13 special guests from among the poor to eat with him, and a large number of the poor were served meals near his palace. During Advent and Lent, all who presented themselves were given a meal, and Louis often served them in person. He kept lists of needy people, whom he regularly relieved in every prov-ince of his dominion. Disturbed by new Muslim advances in Syria, he led another crusade in 1267, at the age of 41. His crusade was diverted to Tunis for his brother’s sake. The army was decimated by disease within a month, and Louis himself died on foreign soil at the age of 44. He was canonized 27 years later.

“Let all the nations praise you!” (Psalm 67:4) today’s psalm response exclaims. In the psalms and other He-brew scriptures, this kind of invocation is actually an invi-tation to God to act, to intervene in human lives in a man-ner that will cause everyone—not just the Chosen Peo-ple—to give praise. Stated a bit more strongly, it is some-thing of a “put up or shut up” challenge to God, the sort of strong statement the psalmists of Israel, trusting in their intimate and loving relationship with God, were not afraid to make. The Gospel has its own exclamation, announcing the appearance of the Canaanite woman with “Behold!” (Matthew 15:22) “Behold!” is a scriptural flag that tells us that God is about to act or announce something through an individual or a situation. In the case of Jesus, God was going to act through this woman, whom nobody among Jesus’ followers would have believed to be an agent of the divine will. Like the psalmists, we might pas-sively inform or perhaps even actively challenge God to do something so that everyone will come to belief, but God will always turn the tables on us. It becomes our calling, our duty (as it was for Jesus) to behold the situations and per-sons of our daily lives so that God can act through us, so the Kingdom can be announced through our living. three Knights oversee giving directions. So, please think about joining the Knights and you may be able to shorten the walking time.
