resident cornerDarla grew up in Ohio and attended Ohio State University receiving a degree in Speech Pathology. She was the first person in her family to graduate from college. Her mother was a bit concerned when she immediately joined VISTA, the domestic Peace Corps and was assigned to rural areas of South Carolina where she tutored students, and helped develop a youth recreation center and recycling program. This pattern of choosing her own way stands out in Darla’s life. After two years with VISTA she took a teaching job as a speech therapist in a SC coastal town. She moonlighted as a waitress and eventually got her bartending license. Management didn’t want a woman tending bar, but she convinced them overwise. Darla refused to wear a skimpy outfit but donned costumes like the males.

and later married Larry who had degrees in Sociology and Special Education. The couple were hired by International Teaching- Family Association––an agency overseeing Boys and Girls Homes across America. They became “Teaching Parents” living with the children who had been removed from their families because of abuse, neglect or emotional problems. Larry later became Director of Residential Services. Darla continued working part time doing training and consulting with other “Teaching Parents,” and in the schools as a Speech Pathologist. In Boys Town Nebraska Darla traveled to school districts around the country to train classroom teachers on effective behavior and classroom management techniques. Larry was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2005,

and it caused him to resign from his 25-year career. He worked for Home Depot for six years with some special arrangements worked out between Darla and his boss. They have one daughter who lives in England and has three girls, ages 7-8 and 9. After Larry retired Darla studied to obtain certification to teach children with autism, in K-2nd grades. After nine years she retired to attend to Larry’s needs. He passed away in 2017. Presently Darla is substitute

teaching with special needs children, and works periodically with classes of children with autism. She is active with St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church helping to cook for Wednesday night suppers, volunteeringShe loves her neighbors at CH and all the trees, and of course the swimming pool.
