Ma'alahi Hula

This easy and gentle Hula class is suitable for most fitness

levels and can be done sitting as well as standing.

A very beautiful and expressive form of dance, Hula features

hand movements signifying aspects of nature, such as the

swaying of a tree in the breeze or a wave in the ocean, or a

feeling or emotion, such as fondness or yearning.

Please join us Tuesdays beginning August 14, 2018

at 2:00 PM with Instructor Sally Mortell for this

fun, new experience in exercise.

Summer + Salad = YUM

Summertime is the perfect time for a cool, fresh

salad. Join us each Tuesday and Wednesday

from 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM for a delicious

salad at our Salad Bar. Fresh lettuce, tomatoes,

assorted vegetables, cheese, olives and

croutons plus your choice of dressing makes an

outstanding lunch for everyone. Each In-house

salad is only $3.50 and Take Out salads are

$4.00. Tickets are sold on Salad Bar Days.

August 2, 1776 - In Philadelphia, most of the 55 members of the Continental Congress

signed the parchment copy of the Declaration of Independence.

August 5, 1861 - President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the first Federal income tax,

a 3 percent tax on incomes over $800, as an emergency wartime measure during the

Civil War. However, the tax was never actually put into effect.

August 6-10, 1787 - The Great Debate occurred during the Constitutional Convention.

Outcomes included the establishment of a four-year term of office for the President,

granting Congress the right to regulate foreign trade and interstate commerce, and the

appointment of a committee to prepare a final draft of the Constitution.

August 14, 1935 - President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act establishing the

system which guarantees pensions to those who retire at age 65. The Social Security

system also aids states in providing financial aid to dependent children, the blind and

others, as well as administering a system of unemployment insurance.

August 14, 1945 - V-J Day, commemorating President Truman's announcement that

Japan had surrendered to the Allies.

August 15, 1969 - Woodstock began in a field near Yasgur's Farm at Bethel, New York.

The three-day concert featured 24 rock bands and drew a crowd of more than 300,000

young people. The event came to symbolize the counter-culture movement of the

1960's.

August 16, 1977 - Elvis Presley was pronounced dead at the Memphis Baptist Hospital

at 3:30 p.m., at age 42.

August 18, 1920 - The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, granting

women the right to vote.

August 21, 1959 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a proclamation admitting

Hawaii to the Union as the 50th state.

August 31, 1997 - Britain's Princess Diana died at age 36 from massive internal injuries

suffered in a high-speed car crash.

August 17, 1786 - American frontiersman ________ (1786-1836) was born in Hawkins

born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Considered one of the finest conductors in American

Support Groups & Meetings

Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group

Wednesday, August 8, 2018, 10:00 AM - Group meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the

month. This support group is for caregivers and others dealing with Alzheimer's

disease. The group is led by trained facilitators.

No fee.

Neuropathy Support Group

Tuesday, August 14, 2018, 1:00 PM - Group meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month.

If you or someone you care about has neuropathy, participating in a support group

can be a way to better understand and come to terms with your own situation.

No fee.

Parkinson’s Support Group of Elk Grove

Wednesday, August 15, 2018, 10:00 AM - Group meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the

month. Parkinson’s Support Group of Elk Grove holds meetings at the Senior Center

with round table discussions, presentations, and guest speakers. All who are affected

by Parkinson’s; family, caregivers and loved ones are welcome to participate.

Wednesday, August 8, 2018, 9:30 AM - Group meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the

month. A different, intriguing and hard-to-put-down book is read and discussed each

month. Interesting perspectives and thoughts are shared at each meeting.

FREE Blood Pressure Checks

Friday, 10:30 AM to 11:30 PM - Free blood pressure checks are held at the Center

every Friday by a Registered Nurse or CCSD Paramedic.

HICAP - Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program

Contact HICAP at 916-376-8915 to make an appointment for Medicare questions and

program information. No fee.

AARP Driver Safety Programs - September 25, 2018

One day driver safety courses, held at the Senior Center may help save you money on

your insurance. Next course will be held September 25, 2018. You must sign up, pay

the fee and complete registration paperwork prior to that date as seating is limited.

Fee is $18 for AARP members and $23 for non-members. Cash and checks are ac-

cepted only. No credit cards. 15
