REPORTS

Captain’s Report

Completed Events since the last newsletter

Sat 23rd July – Gropers State Relays

A small but special squad of 6 swimmers represented Team Armadale at the annual Golden

Gropers Relay Carnival at HBF Stadium on the afternoon of Saturday July 23rd. Swimmers

representing 13 Masters clubs turned up for the event with all swimmers embracing the team

aspect of the event without the pressure of individual performances which made for an

enjoyable and fun atmosphere throughout the meet. Making up our small but special team was

event newby “Groper” Derek, making his event return was “Sneaky” Pete Escott, Pamela, Chas,

Gill and Colin. At the end of what was a great day of team swimming, we finished 13 th on

overall points . Still a good effort considering the size of the teams from other clubs and we

did set a new club record for the Male 200m Free relay in the 200-239 age group.

Sat 31st July – Leisurepark Balga 400/800 – Rowie and Bill (pb in 400m free) attended

Sat 6th August – Club Champs Rd 6 – 100m, 50m and 25m

Another great turnout of 15 swimmers for round 6 of the Club Championship series on Saturday

6th August which included potential new member Mandeep who swam two events. It was the 3

event format with a 100m, 50m and 25m choice of strokes. Once again there was a good mix of

strokes swum with special mention of president Rossco and the treasurer Hans belting out 100

IM’s in fine style! Rowie finished on top of the points table for the day with a maximum 15

points from her three swims, which included pb’s in her 100m backstroke, 50m backstroke and

25m backstroke and setting new club records for the 30-34 Age Group in her 25m backstroke

and 100m backstroke, go Row! Fettes finished second on points and set a new club record in the

65-69 Age Group for his 50m backstroke. Also recording pb’s were Pamela for her 100m free

and Colin for his 50m free and also setting a new club record in the 45-49 Age Group for the

50m free.

Sun 7th August – Somerset Masters 1500m Event – Rowie and Jeff - Rowena set a new Club

Record in her 1500m breaststroke. Jeff’s 1500m breaststroke was a big PB of -171.14 seconds.

Upcoming Events. See me, Cap’n Col, for entry:

Rowie’s Report

Leisurepark LiveLighter 400/800m short-course meet – 31 July 2016 William (Bill) Stevens and I made the journey to Balga on a wet and windy Sunday (plenty of those

lately) to notch up a few endurance swims. These meets are run differently to the sprint carnivals most of

us are used to. Rather than having heats with pre-assigned lanes, swimmers are allocated to a lane “on

the deck” and rolling starts used (when a swimmer finishes in one lane, the next swimmer in that lane

starts and so on). This helps with the efficiency of the long distance meets.

Bill arrived in plenty of time and was on his best behaviour – in and out of the pool. Bill swam a 7:36.57

personal best for his 400m freestyle, well done Bill! I swam 7:08.37 for my 400m breaststroke, followed by

a 7:10.37 for a 400m fly.

Number of entrants was slightly down on last year, but we were still rewarded with an impressive spread

of Subway, homemade soup and cakes. I was slightly disconcerted when the organiser asked if I was from

Armadale, which he said was “good, because we have lots of food.” Not sure if we have a reputation or he

thought we may need fortification for the long drive home!

Somerset LiveLighter 1500m long-course meet – 7 August 2016

Jeff Sanders and I represented Armadale on yet another wet and windy Sunday (are there any other

types of Sunday?) Somerset is an older outdoor pool so we were quite exposed to the whims of the wind

and rain. Jeff and I both opted to do breaststroke, a popular choice amongst swimmers on the day.

Jeff swam a massive personal best time of 39:47.11, and I dipped under the half hour mark for the first

time (long course) with 28:30.94.

As always, the Somerset club kept us warm and fed with a selection of home-made soups.

It looks like Armadale will be well represented at the final distance meet of the year at Maida Vale on

August 27th. Go Team Armadale!

Who remembers this? Where was this taken?

YVONNE L’s TRIP TO ENGLAND

Leaving Perth Airport on an early morning flight via Dubai to change planes for the

connecting flight to London. That’s what the itinerary stated. However, Due to a plane

crash landing on the runway ten minutes prior to when my plane was due to land, the

airport was closed and all flights had to divert to other airports. The plane I was on ended

up at an airport called Al Ain near Abu Dhabi. Our plane remained on the tarmac for six

hours it was 35 degrees outside, inside the plane we had the comfort of air conditioning

plus extra attention from the crew with drinks and snacks, (unfortunately none of the

snacks were gluten free.) After six hours on the tarmac we were transferred into buses and

a four hour journey to Dubai International Airport. Arriving at the airport we found the

place to be a bit chaotic as all of the passengers that were on the planes that had been

diverted were now standing in long queues trying to get new flights. 46 hours after leaving

Byford I arrived at my brothers home, the delay was not as traumatic as it sounds.

Page 6: August 2016 · Movie; Bridget Jones’ Baby . A light - hearted comedy fee -l good no brainer have a laugh show (Rene Zelwinger, Hugh Grant, Colin Firth.) ... a four hour journey

My brother lives in a pretty village called Banham. His garden backs on to a farmers field

that is home to a lot of shire horses, the church he attends is just next door to his house,

sitting in the garden listening to the church bells ringing was just magic.

After a few days at my brother’s home in Norfolk we packed the car and headed for the

place of my birth being Northumberland (last county before Scotland on the north east

coast) a very beautiful part of England but very cold. While the locals can go out in

summer clothes, I have had to go and buy a fleece jacket and wear a scarf.

It is nine years since I met up with my brother and two sisters, and it is wonderful all

being together again. The village I was born and grew up in has a coffee morning once a

month to which we were invited; they even presented me with a welcome home card which

was very nice of them. The weather might be damp and cold but the people are very

warm hearted and welcoming.
