CFS/D STUDENT NEWSLETTER
August 2015
Fall 2015 CFS/D Scholarships
GET CONNECTED: USE SF State Gateway. You can
do many things on your Student Center: forward your
SFSU email to your gmail or other personal account (so
you don’t miss important messages from campus...faculty
send e-mails from their class lists or iLearn site, which go
to your SFSU address), register for classes, print your
transcripts, DPR or class schedule, sign up for Credit/No
Credit, drop classes (by deadline), add classes with a per-
mission number, change your address, verify your enroll-
ment, check deadlines, and many more things.
DEADLINES: DROP/ADD/CR-NC/W. Adhering to
deadlines is very important. The university is being strict
about deadlines and adhering to new policies. High unit
students will be getting notices from the registrar for addi-
tional required advising. Finishing or adding double ma-
jors and minors may be more difficult. Check with your
advisor.
You must check your online registration before Sept 4 to
make sure you are properly registered. Drop deadline: Sept
4. The deadline to add a class: Sept 21. You will NOT be
allowed to add classes late. CR/NC deadline is Oct 19. Sign
up online (faculty cannot do this for you.) Withdrawing
from a class needs 3 signatures and documentation of seri-
ous and compelling reasons. Withdraw Deadline: Nov 20.
Check course syllabi for details on CHSS ‘W’ policy. Doc-
umentation is needed for all withdrawals.
THE CFS/D WEBSITE. Check out the dept site. You’ll
find student association news, program requirements, appli-
cations, dept activities, and more: http://cfsd.sfsu.edu.
SENIOR PORTFOLIOS. Students will develop a por t-
folio of their work in their senior year. You should think
about projects in each class that might go into your portfo-
lio.
signed off by your advisor. List the substituted courses on
the application as appropriate. You need a current copy of
your unofficial SFSU transcript. You may want to check
with the university Advising Center if you have questions
on general university graduation requirements. You need
120 units and a 2.0 SFSU GPA, 2.0 Overall GPA, and 2.0
Major GPA.
IMPORTANT: check your DPR for equivalencies
for major courses. If they are not listed, see your advisor
ASAP. But, the DPR is only a guide, it is not official. Your
advisor may have substituted a course not shown on the
DPR where you expect it.
The deadline for Fall graduation applications is Friday,
Sept 18 to the Department Chair. Be sure to star t the
process early. Your Advisor and Department Chair must
sign your application before you take it to Student Ser-
vices. Advisors may not be available the day of the dead-
line, so don’t wait till the last day! Take your folder to
your advising appointment.
Follow the guidelines for CFS/D graduation applica-
tions: http://cfsd.sfsu.edu/content/student-resources
Remember you must type in the courses required for
your major in the order they appear on the checksheet in
your advising folder and have all substituted courses

classes. Please do NOT take your folder
home; we must have it in the Depart-
ment office.
5. For GE and general advising, you
may want to visit the Student Resource
Center in the College of Health & Social
Sciences, HSS 239, 415/405-3533.
6. If you do not attend the first day of classes, you may be
dropped; but don’t assume that, you are still responsible
for your registration.
7. See your advisor every semester to see what’s new and
update your Graduation Plan.

CFS/D faculty and students organized a wonderful ceremony and celebration for our 2014-2015 graduates. The celebra-
tion took place in McKenna theatre where our College Dean, Alvin Alvarez, and CFS/D faculty talked to students, fam-
ilies, and friends. Friederike Geiken, CFS/D distinguished undergraduate student, and Alicia Connor, CFS/D distin-
guished graduate student, spoke to the graduating class. Also student representatives from each degree program spoke
about their programs. Congratulations to all! Later in the day many joined graduates and guests at AT&T Park for the
official university commencement.
Thanks to our CFS/D student workers and Dr. Vouchilas’ team for making this such a great day. We need student
organizations to work on next year’s celebration. Also we’re hoping juniors will volunteer in May for the next graduat-
ing class (when you graduate, the juniors will do it for you!). See Dr. Rabolt or Dr. Gus Vouchilas with your ideas.
