August 2015 - lambdachi.org - Issue #7 2

It’s been a busy month!

To all of you who joined us in Ames, Iowa from July 23-25, we hope you enjoyed the experience and had a safe travel home.

For those of you unable to join us, then you’re in the right place. This month’s issue of Cross & Crescent magazine can affectionately be called “The Stead Issue.”

Inside we’ve recapped every moment of the weekend long seminar. We’ve got insight into the specialized programming, quotes from attendees and speakers, photos, social media highlights and all the major news announcements from this year’s Lambda Chi summer conference.

Speaking of announcements, here’s one I’ve been waiting months to reveal. After years of talk, speculation and frustration, Lambda Chi Alpha has officially announced that an app for mobile devices has hit stores. Read the full story for the all of the details on page eight.

As our motto at Stead this year was “Liberate Your Leadership,” we’ve got a story out of our Samford chapter where one brother was doing just that, as Brother Skyler Graham was one of six selected to attended a new Air Force/ROTC Academy this fall.

To round out this issue, get to know my communications colleague, Jimmy Long, in this edition of IHQ 20Q, and as always Chapter News sends us home.

Next month we celebrate 100 years of Cross & Crescent magazine, get your submissions and suggestions in now to be a part of this monumental issue.

As always, much love and stay safe.

STEAD LEADERSHIP SEMINAR 2015: BROTHERS HEAD TO AMES, IOWA TO LIBERATE LEADERSHIP

Over a long weekend in late July, brothers from over 190 of Lambda Chi Alpha’s chapters traveled from across the United States and Canada to the campus of Iowa State University located in Ames, Iowa for the 2015 Stead Leadership Seminar. B y : E l i a h M c C u t c h e n ( M o n t e v a l l o )

The seminar which began on Thursday afternoon on July 23, started with a kick-off speech made by the fraternity’s CEO, Bill Farkas.

Along with fun facts about Iowa and Iowa State University, Farkas encouraged attendees to, “think about the bigger Lambda Chi Alpha,” as it relates to the 600 members attending Stead Leadership Seminar, the 11,000 undergraduate brothers, the 180,000 living members and the almost 300,000 brothers initiated.

Following the kick-off, brothers from Lambda Chi Alpha’s chapters split into eighteen small groups to head off to their individual small group sessions, each taught by two facilitators composed of members of Lambda Chi professional staff and certified alumni volunteers.

The sessions, written by Associate Director of Education Marcus Kelley, were designed with the hope that attendees would build a bond with individuals in their groups and garner a sense of encouragement for the future of their chapters.

“In the past we’ve always done really general operational education,” said Kelley. “This year, our primary focus is on leadership development of the individual brother so that hopefully he can become a better leader, then go back and help his chapter be successful operationally.”

Thursday night’s kickoff dinner took place on the arena floor of the Hilton Coliseum. The welcome and invocation for the night were given by the Grand High Phi David Huffine.

After dinner, Stead Leadership Seminar attendees split into ten groups for specialized education sessions. Education topics ranged from motivating members, finances, officer transitioning, philanthropy and many other sessions.

“Much of the program was based around the social skills and character you build as an undergraduate and how you can apply these to your career and life,” said Ball State undergraduate attendee Evan Ziebell.

Farkas saw one of the largest turnouts at his “Tough Brotherhood” session, focused on “how prospective chapter leaders can utilize the ritual and hold membership accountable and motivate them to live up to the values of the creed.”

Farkas took members through the creed step by step and questioned what the cross and the crescent meant to each individual. He also took brothers through Lambda Chi Alpha’s ritual and explained valuing the ritual’s teachings over the bylaws in the fraternity’s constitution and statutory code.

To bring the first day of Stead Leadership Seminar to a close Thursday night, the fraternity hosted an ice cream social for attendees, giving members the opportunity to mingle with brothers from other chapters, meet the Educational Leadership Consultant assigned to their regions and hear stories from alumni brothers about their time in the organization.

The second day of Stead 2015 began Friday morning with an exemplification of the fraternity’s initiation ritual performed by the brothers of the International Ritual Team.

Composed of brothers from across North America, IRT held practices for almost fifteen hours on Wednesday and Thursday, along with several conference call rehearsals over the summer in preparation for Stead.

Seminar attendees had a chance to witness the Ritual, where associate member Maxwell Denny of the University of Oklahoma was initiated into the bond of Lambda Chi Alpha. Denny was welcomed into Lambda Chi Alpha by five hundred alumni and undergraduate brothers in attendance.

After Ritual, brothers and guests gathered in Hilton Coliseum for Friday’s awards banquet where brothers were recognized for their achievement at the chapter level.

The Feeding America award, given to three chapters that have shown excellence in philanthropy, was presented by Joe Citro, special advisor to the chief executive officer.

“In the first year of the partnership, members of 142 chapters of Lambda Chi Alpha across the continent raised nearly 2.3 million pounds of food for their communities, resulting in almost two million meals for families in need,” announced Citro.

The first award went to the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, where brothers raised a total of 134,829 pounds of food through a Teeter Totter-athon, bag pick ups and drop offs and

a Watermelon Bust philanthropy event.

The second was given to Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where brothers distributed around 12,000 bags throughout their community and partnered with various organizations, including the sheriff’s department. Brothers at WPI raised 192,000 pounds of food the past year.

The final award was given to the University of New Orleans, where chapter members hosted a week-long watermelon-themed event and raised 228,500 pounds of food for Feeding America. But Lambda Chi Alpha is not done yet, Citro challenged the entire membership to raise 4 million pounds of food in the next academic year.

Nick Zuniga, director of chapter services, presented the Greek Advisor of the Year award to Bob Kerr of Oregon State University. “Under Bob’s leadership, the Greek system at Oregon State University has regularly seen chapters take national distinctions for chapter excellence and improvements, as well as, produce men and women for the respective national organization,” Zuniga remarked.

After an incident which resulted in the death of a student, Kerr worked closely with OSU’s chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha, leading Oregon State’s chapter to win the 2010 Phoenix Award and the 2014 Grand High Alpha Award for Excellence.

The final award of the night, the Duke Flad Award, was given to Linwood White of North Carolina State University. Along with showing excellence in academics, White led his chapter as High Alpha, High Kappa and Chairman of the Executive Committee to help his chapter secure the largest new member class of all twenty-two fraternities on campus, double the chapter’s size and help them win Fraternity of the Year. White was the forty-fifth recipient of the Duke Flad award.

Following the luncheon, attendees took part in two other educational sessions, taught by members of Lambda Chi Alpha’s staff and Stead Leadership Seminar facilitators. Ross Morgan, a Chapter Services intern, attended a session studying the biological red flags of hazing.

Brothers were instructed to put their hands in ice water for three minutes and compared saliva samples to show the way the body reacted to extreme circumstances that hazing activities may bring. “In the long run it’s going to be able to help us find out why people haze and how to stop it,” Morgan said. “Not only within Lambda Chi but in campuses completely.”

Friday night’s picnic dinner in Harvester Courtyard was followed by a Town Hall Q & A about Lambda Chi Alpha’s initiation ritual. Attendees were invited to ask headquarters staff Matt Roy and Lynn Chipperfield questions about its

interpretation, origins and meaning. The second day of Stead Leadership

Seminar came to a close with another opportunity for brothers to mingle with other chapters of Lambda Chi Alpha and to meet their Educational Leadership Consultants. Brothers enjoyed meeting members of other chapters but most turned in early in preparation for an even more exciting day ahead.

The final day of Lambda Chi Alpha’s annual summer conference

began with brothers getting the chance to sit in on two different special programming sessions—Phired Up Recruitment, and Sex Signals. Both programs contained information beneficial to both their chapters and their campuses.

During the Phired Up Recruitment session, Vincent Fabra, the company’s training director, spoke with Stead attendees about engaging potential new members and about chapter growth. Fabra, a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and a Southern Mississippi graduate, spoke to members about typical “name tag conversation,” which contain no real

depth and instructed brothers to ask more open ended question during recruitment.

Fabra then explained the “Four Pillars of Social Excellence” that Phired Up promotes: Curiosity, Generosity, Authenticity and Vulnerability. “The path to connection is not through commonality, but through curiosity,” Fabra remarked. Fabra also revealed his secrets to successful recruitment, one of them being “People join people.”

“You don’t join because of any of the recruitment events that you have, you join because of the people you meet at those events. I think that it really can be difficult for us to forget,” Jack Hesser, an attendee from Ball State said. “Getting those guys to show up is only half the battle. The other half is getting them to buy into you and buy into the different guys that you’re with.”

Phired Up is a popular recruitment program, one several brothers in attendance of Stead had already seen. “What I really like about Phired Up is that even though it’s the same presentation and a lot of

the information can be the same, the personal aspect that each Phired Up speaker brings to it, is something you really can’t put a price on,” Hesser said.

Sex Signals tackles one of the biggest problems facing college campuses today: sexual assault. Through comedy, improv and audience participation, the two actors took the audience through several situations and looked at issues involving dating, sex and consent.

The program left audience members laughing, an approach that attendee Sean Kennedy of University of Southern Indiana thought made the tough material more fun. “They were trying to get us interested with the comedy, and then when they had our attention they started talking to us seriously and getting their point across which is what a good public speaker should do,” Kennedy said.

Stead was brought to a close Saturday with the Purple, Green and Gold Banquet. Max Goldenberg, the Educational Foundation’s director of annual giving, revealed that the Drop the Dot campaign had raised $8,000 during the three-day span of the seminar.

Next, Grand High Alpha Fletcher McElreath presented the Grand High Alpha award to those three chapters showing a superior level of operation in academics, campus involvement, recruitment, philanthropy, campus and community relations, communication and risk management

Brothers from all over the country attended the three day Stead Leadership Seminar where they were instructed on the latest fraternity education and resources.

for at least three consecutive years.

The first award went to the University of Texas. The Brothers of the Alpha-Mu Zeta have shown excellence in their year-round recruitment program that exemplifies the fraternity’s values and ideals, along with strong fraternity education, pre-initiation programming and alumni involvement.

“It has been said that

success is nothing more than the culmination of everything you will do to succeed,” McElreath remarked. “Alpha-Mu Zeta has indeed succeeded as they have paved the road to their first ever Grand High Alpha award.”

The second award went to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The brothers at the Epsilon-Eta Zeta increased every aspect of their chapter operations: from recruitment to philanthropy to campus involvement, demonstrating Lambda Chi Alpha’s open motto “Xalepa Ta Kala.” Epsilon-Eta Zeta worked diligently and continued chapter excellence even

through a devastating house flood. This is Rensselaer’s fourth Grand High Alpha Award.

The third and final Grand High Alpha award went to Union University. McElreath remarked, “The men are true examples of what Lambda Chi Alpha seeks to be on every college campus.” The brothers of Lambda-Zeta Zeta have put themselves a step ahead of their peers

by ensuring all members–from alumni to associate members—contribute to the chapter’s excellence. This is Union’s seventh Grand High Alpha award.

Finally, McElreath revealed Lambda Chi Alpha’s Strategic Plan, based on feedback from undergraduate and alumni brothers, professional staff and the board. “As a result of this input and from meetings, we’ve concluded that our overall vision for our new plan is to be the preeminent fraternal experience, offering innovative, values-based leadership training to high-quality undergraduate members on a growing

number of chapters internationally,” Fletcher said.

The keynote speaker at the Purple, Green and Gold Banquet was Jeremiah Shinn, a graduate of Arkansas State University and a brother of the Phi-Zeta chapter. Shinn is the assistant vice president for Student Life at Boise State University.

Shinn had a rousing speech for the Stead attendees, sending them off with an

inspirational message of achieving their greatness even in the face of adversity.

“People don’t change because you want them to change, they change because they believe in something…we believe in Lambda Chi Alpha,” said Shinn.

Finally, Chief Executive Officer Bill Farkas closed the banquet, announcing the reveal of Lambda Chi Alpha’s official app, LCA Mobile, available on Google Play and the Apple app store.

Lambda Chi Alpha’s 56th General Assembly will be held in Miami, Fla. in the summer of 2016.

CEO Bill Farkas, to a coliseum of over 600 undergraduates, alumni and volunteers, introduced to the anticipating crowd, LCA Mobile.

“We had an app for Stead Leadership Seminar,” said Farkas, “And we noticed that several of you used that and enjoyed using that and communicated that way. For many years we have been trying to get Apple and others to allow us to have a Lambda Chi Alpha app, and so, I am so pleased to announce that we are excited to share, that moving forward you can now be some of the very first users of the Lambda Chi Alpha mobile app.”

LCA Mobile, the new app for Apple and Android devices, is available now for free on Google Play and the App Store. Lambda Chi Alpha joins only a handful

of other organizations on the mobile marketplace but differentiates itself from the rest in terms of content, quality and capability.

The LCA app brings resources that undergraduates and officers use every day. Such as direct logins to myLCA and Officer Portal. It’s also great for keeping up with all of Lambda Chi’s social media feeds and digital content, like exclusive photos and video.

LCA Mobile is a way for not only undergrads and officers to connect to the greater Lambda Chi Alpha experience, but also alumni and potential new members. For the first time ever all the latest updates and news from the Lambda Chi Alpha world are all in one convenient place.

“Our app is an evolving and flexible platform,” said

INTRODUCING LCA MOBILE: FRATERNITY UNVEILS NEW APP

Director of Communications & IT Tad Lichtenauer. “As this is a new venture for the organization, it will take time to learn what works and what doesn’t, but with the help and feedback of our brothers, this application will develop into a sleeker and more resourceful tool over time.”

Lichtenauer also explained that, it is now also easier than ever to communicate with International Headquarters. The staff directory outlines a list of professional staff members photos and contact information along with their job titles to make it easier to see who to contact for what.

Educational Leadership Consultants are broken down

geographically and feature maps of their respective regions. Additionally the integrated search function allows users to find exactly who is responsible for their region.

Never miss another update about national or regional events again. With a full calendar of events and regionalized push notifications, every update and announcement is right at your fingertips.

Available now for mobile devices such as phones and tablets LCA Mobile looks to become a staple of the organization and an even greater tool for its members. For more, download the app or check www.lambdachi.

August 2015 - lambdachi.org - Issue #7 9FEATURE - BROTHER SELECTED FOR ACADEMY

This May, Samford Brother Skyler Graham was selected for a new exchange program between the Air Force Academy and Air Force ROTC. The program, started this year, received 2,000 possible candidates from 145 ROTC detachments from across the country. Graham was one of six cadets selected nationally.

Graham describes the experience as “an opportunity of a lifetime.” The semester-long program starts this fall in Colorado Springs, Colo. Graham will attend classes at the Academy, participate in physical fitness tests, test leadership skills, play intramural sports and conduct military training.

Along with his ROTC training, Graham has been an active leader in his chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha. Since joining, Graham has served as the chapter’s High Sigma, Chaplain and a member of the Executive Committee.

“ROTC has helped mold me as a leader,” Graham explains, describing situations he says most people can’t even fathom being in. “Through those experiences I’ve learned how to interact with many different types of people. I have been able to interact and coordinate with people from different walks of life, whether it be through recruiting or everyday brotherly activities.”

Lambda Chi Alpha and the Army have the same Seven Core Values—Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Service and Stewardship, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage. “Both

organizations mold the individuals into men who are looked upon in times of hardship,” Graham says. “Also, both organizations ask for more than caring for yourself. You are expected to help each other and serve those around you.”

Jim Hamlin, the chapter’s High Pi, says members have been excited for Skyler, but upset he won’t be there to help lead the chapter this upcoming semester. “Without my brothers, I am unsure whether or not I would be as successful as I am today,” Graham says. “They push me to try new experiences and support me in every endeavor I undertake.”

Graham is not the only member of the Theta-Alpha Zeta in the program; the chapter has both active and associate members involved. “My brothers have been extremely supportive of my upcoming opportunity,” Graham said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better support system.”

As he prepares for the program, Graham says he’s looking forward to different types of learning and training. In addition to the exchange program, Graham also received distinguished graduate honors in Field Training. Along with 307 others from across the country, he was put through physical, mental and emotional tests to assess his leadership skills in stressful environments. Graham graduated within the top ten percent of cadets.

“Excellence can be viewed in multiple ways, whether it be physically, socially, mentally, or spiritually. The incorporation of all of those aspects allows for the ultimate benefit that you see in your life,” Graham says. “Both Lambda Chi and the Air Force strive for people of character and men of excellence.”
