    Food for Thought

    Movie Review By Ethan Matthieu

    The Bare Facts

    Iwas most pleased with

    the letter I received

    from the Minister of

    Agriculture (see my last

    M.M.M.) in which he out-

    lined the categories of

    Crown Lands to be pro-

    tected. This is an orderly

    step forward in recogniz-

    ing that some lands in

    categories one and two

    must be protected from

    cultivation in perpetuity.

    Of course we know from

    experience now, that in

    perpetuity only means

    until the next pressure

    group gets enough mo-

    mentum that their lobby-

    ists swing the opinion of

    the government of the

    day. In case you think

this is too callous an opin-

    ion; consider the following

    experiences.

    The oil-sands area was

    once considered protected.

    Similarly, Banff National

    Park was once a haven

    where tourists had to be

    protected from the elk

    and bear, whereas now

the bear and elk are at

    risk of the hordes of

    human invaders. There is

the case in BC where a

    dedicated law separated

    lands for urban and in-

    dustrial sprawl and

    worked for a few decades,

    until now the government

    is waffling around trying

    to change the circum-

    stances for development.

    Of course the tragedy of

    having the main highway

    west from Toronto pass

    through the most fertile

    lands in Canada instead

    of up on the rocky

    promontory has destroyed

    millions of acres of farm

    land. Or just trace Tom

    Mulcairs political travels

to leader of the NDP in

    which he left the Quebec

    Liberal Caucus because of

    being unable to stop the

    destruction of pristine for-

    est from building develop-

    ment. The Pacific west

    coast has been declared

    an ocean park restricted

    zone for the marine

    wildlife, while the pas-

    sage of oil tankers is

    being discussed. No, dont

    give me the hog-wash

    about perpetuity.

    High on my grump list

    is the dismemberment of

    the PFRA created to offset

    some of the worst prob-

    lems of the dust bowl

    years, had developed a

    unique and specialized

    ability to manage environ-

    mental problems on the

    prairies only to be shut

    down by short-sighted

    government. Protecting

the habitat of many of our

    endangered species

unique to the prairies is a

    worthy cause; however

    the management of the

    lands and waters is a

    much larger issue and re-

    quires active, not passive

    attention.

    The Sand Hills of south

    western Saskatchewan is

a case in point. Soils that

    can barely withstand con-

    trolled grazing has oil be-

    neath the surface and

sooner or later it will be

    tapped. We all know from

    bitter experience the per-

    manent damage of oil well

rigs and it would be per-

    manent if it started the

    dunes moving. Along

    with that is the sprawl

    around Regina and Moose

    Jaw that seems to now

    cover the excellent farm

    land between the two cen-

    ters. At least Saskatoon

was built on a sand heap

so the losses are not so

    relevant.

I have to admit the much

    maligned tree huggers

get it right when they try

    to prohibit the first on-

    slaught on pristine lands

    because there is no turn-

    ing back and the protec-

    tion in perpetuity is just

    so much legalese, until

    economic pressure builds

    for changes to the original

    restrictions. It reminds

me of the story of the

    farmer shouting at his son

    that had climbed up on

    the manure pile; dont

    eat that Elmer, that aint

    hay.

    Opinions expressed

    here are those of the

    author.

    C.M. (Red) Williams

The Purge: Anarchystarring Frank Grillo, Carmen Ejogo, Zach Gilford, Kiele Sanchez, and Zoe Soul

    The Purge: Anarchy is

    about a young couple

    working to survive on

    the streets after their car

breaks down right as the an-

    nual purge commences. The

Purge is a yearly event where

all crime is legal for 12 hours.

    People can do whatever they

want in these 12 hours to re-

    lease themselves from all

    their stress, pain, and wor-

    ries.

As a sequel, this is great.

The first Purge film was a

    house invasion flick with

    cheap scares and bland act-

    ing. This has some pretty

    awesome action and the act-

ing is not half bad. Frank

Grillo plays a man who is out

    to kill another man who

killed his son in a car acci-

dent. On his way to kill this

man, he finds a mother and

    daughter in trouble and he

    ultimately decides to help

    them. From there, they are

    joined by a couple being

chased from a group of blood-

    thirsty killers and the mili-

    tary.

Frank Grillo is the man in

    this film. He really com-

    mands the screen and feels

like a legit person out for

    blood. The mother and

    daughter combo also add lots

    of humanity and reason to

this film, and you can relate

to them easily. Now the huge

problem with this film is the

    couple that joins them. Terri-

    ble acting, wrong casting,

    and just insanely stupid

    character development made

    them the laughing stock of

the film for me. There are a

    lot of other nit-picky thing

that I can't go that I cant go

    into that much detail about

    that also made me question

    parts of the movie.

    I actually thought this

    was a big step

    up from the

    previous

    Purge movie

    and I will

    probably see

    it again at a

    later date.

    I give The

    Purge: Anar-

    chy a 7.5/10

    Preparations continue for the Jamboree.

    cussed.

house to be demolished and another moved onto

the site, one for a garage and one for an RTM to

    be located on a lot.

A letter was read concerning confusion on what

style of memorials are allowed in the new section

of the cemetery. Council confirmed that they

must now be flat headstones to allow for mowing

and other work in the cemetery.

All in all, most of the projects for the year are pro-

gressing as planned. The town is looking good

with the yards being well maintained and the

town property as well! The residents deserve a

compliment for a job well done!

    If you venture down

    Highway 14, west

    of Saskatoon, you

    will come across an

    oasis on the prairie.

    Jims on 14 restaurant

    is located at the Oasis

    Golf Resort just outside

    of Perdue, and is oper-

    ated by Carl Johnson

    and Linda Tkatchuk.

    Together they have

    over 30 years combined

    experience in the hos-

    pitality industry. In

    past years Linda has

    managed the restau-

    rant at the Calgary

    tower and Carl worked

    2 year at the Banff

    Spring Hotel, was the

    Banquet Chef at Uni-

    versity of Calgary and

    was the executive sous

    chef at the Saskatoon

    Inn. He also worked for

    a month in Craft Serv-

    ices for a movie that

    was being shot in Cal-

    gary in the 90s. you

    really learnt how to

    cater to people, says

    Carl, from actors to di-

    rectors to technical

    crews, that required

    catering service any-

    time from 6am to mid-

    night and beyond.

    They also ran the food

    services at the Calgary

    Academy, private

    school, feeding 560 kids

    every day. When we

    took over this service

    we were disappointed

    to see that they had

    been serving the basic

    corn dog level of nutri-

    tion. We worked hard

    to turn that around,

    says Carl, and began

    serving, salads, pasta,

    soups and other health-

    ier dishes

    For the 6 years previ-

    ous to taking over Jims

    on 14, Carl and Linda

    owned Grandma Lees

    in Saskatoon and built

    up a tremendous cater-

    ing business there.

    We want to do the

    same thing here, says

    Linda, we want people

to know that we are not

    just the clubhouse

    restaurant, we are

    open to the public, year

    round, and provide

    much more than the

    clubhouse menu.

    Not only do they create

    daily specials that are

    not on the menu, they

    are again building up

    the catering side of the

    business.

We can cater off site or

    here at the restaurant

    where they can accom-

    modate 150 people in-

    doors or on the massive

    glass enclosed patio

    that offer tremendous

    views of the vast

    prairie landscape and

    many of the holes on

    the golf course. Accord-

    ing to Carl, we offer

    everything from Bar-B-

    Ques, to Roast Beef,

    Stuffed Sole, Pastas,

    anything you want, we

    can probably do it, and

we can set it up buffet

    style so everyone get

    what they want and as

    much as they want.

    While I was at Jims

    on 14 for the interview

for this story, I had the

    opportunity to sample

    some of the food with

    my son. I had the

    pulled-pork sandwich,

    which was piled high

    on a fresh bun, topped

    with crisp creamy cole

    slaw and served with

    nice crisp french fries.

    Delicious !

My son had an order of

    nachos, as big as we

    had ever seen, topped

    with fresh vegetables,

    thick cheese sauce,

    jalapeno peppers and

    refried beans. They

    were awesome good,

    and we stuffed our-

    selves silly, but still

    ended up taking half of

    it home with us.

    Whether you go for

    the food, the view, the

    golf or a catered event

    of your own, Jims on

    14 is a true oasis !

    MP REPORTwww.rmreview.net RM Review

For over a week, the State

    of Israel has been trying

    to eliminate the ability by

    the terrorist group Hamas to

    launch rockets into Israel.

In recent days, both Prime Min-

    ister Stephen Harper

    and Foreign Affairs Minister

    John Baird have made

    statements reiterating Canadas

    position that Israel has the

    right to defend itself.

    Here is the Prime Ministers

    statement issued earlier this

    week:

    The indiscriminate rocket at-

tacks from Gaza on Israel are

terrorist acts, for which there is

    no justification. It is evident

    that Hamas is deliberately

    using human shields to further

    terror in the region.

    Failure by the international

    community to condemn these

    reprehensible actions would en-

    courage these terrorists to con-

    tinue their appalling actions.

Canada calls on its allies and

    partners to recognize that these

    terrorist acts are unacceptable

and that solidarity with Israel is

the best way of stopping the

    conflict.

    Canada is unequivocally be-

hind Israel. We support its right

    to defend itself, by itself,

    against these terror attacks,

    and urge Hamas to immediately

    cease their indiscriminate at-

    tacks on innocent Israeli civil-

    ians.

    Canada reiterates its call for

    the Palestinian government to

    disarm Hamas and other Pales-

    tinian terrorist groups operat-

    ing in Gaza, including the

    Iranian proxy, Palestinian Is-

    lamic Jihad.

Here is the Foreign Affairs Min-

    isters statement issued yester-

    day evening following Hamass

    rejection of Egypts ceasefire

    proposal and Israels initiation

of a ground operation in the

    Gaza Strip:

    Canada stands by Israels right

to defend itself, by itself. Israel

will be forced to continue de-

fending itself as long as Hamas

    continues its rocket attacks

    against civilians.

    These operations could have

been avoided if Hamas had not

    rejected the Government of

    Egypts ceasefire proposala

    proposal that was accepted by

    Israel and welcomed by the

    Palestinian Authority. This

proves that Hamas has no inter-

est in peace and bears responsi-

bility for the further tragic loss

    of life.

    Egypt is the best-placed coun-

try in the region to help end the

current hostilities. It is a his-

toric leader in regional peace ef-

    forts, having successfully

    brokered numerous ceasefire

    agreements over the years, and

    Egypts ongoing initiative is the

    only serious ceasefire proposal

    on the table.

I am very proud to have a Prime

Minster who is willing to take

such a principled stand on the

    world stage.

  • Saskatchewan might be small

in size but its big in opportu-

nity. Thanks to the vision and

hard work of a dynamic, driven and

    growing population, our province

stands out as a great place to live,

work, play and invest. We see this in

    the latest figures from Statistics

    Canada.

Saskatchewan is home to one of

    Canadas best economies, a competi-

    tive business environment, innova-

tive entrepreneurs and a skilled and

    hard-working labour force. Our

    province has more full-time jobs

than ever before, more people work-

ing than ever before and Canadas

    lowest unemployment rate for the

    eighteenth consecutive month.

The benefits of a strong economy is

    increasing wages for working people.

    Wages in Saskatchewan are steadily

increasing. In fact, earlier this year,

wages hit an all-time high. This,

along with our quality of life, is key

to both recruiting and retaining our

    skilled workforce.

Saskatchewan is home to many his-

    toric downtowns and commercial

districts, many of which are a point

of pride. Recognizing this, our gov-

    ernment has announced that Main

Street Saskatchewan will be an on-

    going program. This will involve

    working with communities to pro-

mote, conserve and capitalize on the

    things that make these areas

    unique.

The decision to continue with Main

    Street Saskatchewan was based on

the success of a three-year pilot proj-

ect. Launched in 2011, it saw the

    Ministry of Parks, Culture and

    Sport partner with the communities

of Prince Albert, Maple Creek, In-

dian Head and Wolseley. By invest-

    ing $1.65 million, these communities

have seen the creation of 22 new

businesses, 66 new jobs, $4.9 million

    committed to historic building and

    streetscape improvements and $6.5

    million in property acquisitions. You

    can learn more at

    www.pcs.gov.sk.ca/MainStreet.

    Beautiful scenery, friendly people

    and relaxing, easy-going pace

there is nothing quite like summer

    in Saskatchewan. With endless at-

tractions and activities, the only dif-

ficulty is deciding what to do. For

    many, the season brings quality

    time in our Provincial Parks.

Our parks are a great place to relax

and go hiking, biking, fishing and

camping. Park users can also enjoy

both music and theatre with Em-

    brace Theatre and Saskatchewan

    Express touring throughout the

    summer. The Saskatchewan Archae-

ological Society is doing the same

    with its ArchaeoCaravan tour and

    Canoe Kayak Saskatchewan and

Sask Volleyball are also offering fun

    family programming, mini-camps

    and tournaments. You can visit

    saskparks.net for details.

Home to 3.7 million visits last year,

our parks play a vital role in sup-

porting our high quality life. By in-

    vesting in electrical expansion, new

    facilities and other upgrades, were

    enhancing the visitor experience and

giving them good reason to return.

    This years provincial budget in-

creases funding for parks by 4.6 per

cent and includes $14.9 million for

    upgrades and new construction.

    The Ministry of Government Rela-

    tions, in collaboration with various

    government ministries, agencies,

    Crown corporations and stakeholder

groups, are providing updates on the

key steps the province and its part-

ners are taking in response to the

    record rainfall, flood and recovery

    operations occurring in eastern

    Saskatchewan. Details can be found

    online at Saskatchewan.ca. The con-

tributions of all those who have

    helped to mitigate damage, restore

access and recover cannot be over-

stated. We are truly thankful for

    their efforts.
