NSW Edward Trickett Grade Championships To finish off the 2012/13 season NUBC sent a small contingent of athletes to the annual grade championships where under the trying and tiring conditions of the final regatta of the season our athletes put in a great effort and could be proud of all they achieved throughout the season. Conrad Bond placed 5th in the heat of the mens B grade single scull, unfortunately missing out on going through to the final. Merran Holmes and Jessica Richardson just missed out on placing in the womens B grade double scull, crossing the line in fourth position. The girls were then joined by Tarin Davis, Penny Saltis and cox Conrad Bond in the womens C grade coxed four, unfortunately due to a tight turn around after the double scull the girls only managed to place 7th. JB Sharp Regattas, Iron Cove Over the winter break NUBC athlete Conrad Bond did not take a break from competing and every fortnight between June and August he could be found battling the rough and freezing conditions that Iron Cove provides for the annual JB Sharp regatta series. Conrad competed in the mens handicap single scull and over the weeks placed 3rd, 6th, 1st and at the final regatta a well-earned 4th place just below fellow Balmain rival James Waldersee. Congratulations to Conrad Bond!

"Head of the Hunter" Carrington to Berry Park Marathon What a gruelling beginning to the season for NUBC at this year’s Head of the Hunter Marathon. The 45km marathon ran from Newcastle Rowing Club through the harbour and up the Hunter River past Raymond Terrace to Berry Park and the NUBC boatshed. After a delayed start due to heavy fog, the marathon was underway and our crews were on their way to accomplishing one of the greatest events on the C.D.R.A calendar. Holding the 5th fastest finishing time and placing 1st in the single scull division, Chris Maytom came across the line in 3 hours and 35 minutes. Following Chris was the NUBC women’s quad in 3 hours, 47 minutes and 46 seconds, placing 16th. The race included a crew change for the quad at Raymond Terrace where, after 30km, Rachel Kirby-Faust jumped out and Jessica Richardson with fresh legs joined Penny Saltis, Prudence Dwyer and Emily Wade to finish off the last 15km. The final crew, the men’s double of James Pacey and Nicholas Dunstan, for NUBC crossed the line in 3 hours, 57 minutes and 51 seconds. It was such a massive effort from all the athletes and we hope the hands have now recovered. Congratulations to all the athletes who competed in the Marathon and thank you to our members who volunteered on the day!!

NUBC Annual Fundraising Trivia Night Come and support the Newcastle University Boats Club’s annual trivia night this Friday, the 23rd August!! The trivia starts at 7pm in the Windsor Room at Souths in Merewether. Tables of 8-10 can be booked for $100 by contacting Prudence Dwyer via email ([email protected]) or mobile (0403107670). Payment is to be made to Damon Mills in cash or direct debit into the NUBC account in advance in order to confirm your booking. We'll have our own bar upstairs, and food can be bought downstairs and brought up. Make sure you bring lots of gold coins for our mini games throughout the night. It promises to be an exciting night so I hope we will see you all there!

NUBSea Pub Crawl Another fun social event held earlier this year was the Novice Initiation Pub Crawl- a way for new and old members to break the ice over a three legged race from pub to bar around Newcastle. It was a great night with lots of stories for the club members to pass on and an array of unique sea themed costumes to entertain the community!
