TTRRIIVVIIAA Last month’s question: On the ten dollar bills made before the 1999 series, about 1928 until 1998, how many cars are

on the back of the bill? Answer: Four (You’ll probably need a magnifying glass to see 3 of them). This month’s question: Who is the only U.S. president to be defeated in his re-election bid by his vice-president?

Modesto Happenings

By: Bob Hansen

On July 6th, several of us – Bob and Susan Hansen, Tom Tomberlin, Wayne King, and Jim Van Vliet – went to the evening car show at Hula’s in Escalon. Hula’s is a hamburger joint that hosts an impromptu car show every Friday night from 5:30 to 7:30 during the summer. The Lions Club greets you, does a free raffle, a 50/50 raffle, and awards plaques that are donated and judged by local merchants. There are usually 40 to 60 cars and it’s a nice place to hang out on Friday evening for a couple of hours and have a terrific burger. On the Friday that we were there, Wayne King received a plaque for his truck “Split Pea” – congrats Wayne! The 22nd Annual Summer Bash was held at the Fruit Yard on July 15th. The weather was cooperative as the heat wave had broken – so we had a nice comfortable 92 degree day! Joe Traina again donated the beautiful park like setting at the Fruit Yard and we had a great crowd attending. Many thanks to the F-100’s from other chapters that showed up to help support us. We gave away 31 trophies to the 149 cars registered. Winners were picked by a crack team of judges. The trophies were created by our own Dusty Johnson. As you can see in the pictures, he did a great job again this year. We had a Poker Walk for all

registered cars. There were 5 fun stations to visit, and cash prizes of $25, $75, and $125. We also had a coloring contest for kids, and a “guess the number” for a jar of Skittles. Gene Adams was the DJ that supplied lively crusin’ music for the crowd. The highlight of the day – our HUGE raffle – was a big success. Many thanks to all of the businesses and individuals who support our charities by donating raffle prizes to Summer Bash. We sold 50/50 raffle tickets, raffle tickets for adult prizes and raffle tickets for kids prizes, raffle tickets for the donated patriotic quilt, and a silent auction for an Edelbrock book signed by Vic Edelbrock. We also had the Save Mart Shopping Cart – a big hit for those who haven’t seen this gigantic red shopping cart with a hopped up motor. Thank you to Save Mart Supermarkets. Thanks, too, to the Shriner’s clowns for showing up to entertain us. We had a variety of cars and trucks on display – from rat rods to classics to super customs, and, of course, F-100 pickups! Chris Souza did a great job in screen printing the Summer Bash T-Shirts, which were on sale at the event. Thanks to our many hard-working members, we had another successful year and expect to be able to support our charities in a big way again this year.

NOTES FROM A THOUGHTFUL HUSBAND Stolen from the “Columbia Overdrive”, the newsletter of the Columbia River Regional Group of the Early Ford V8 Club

It is important for men to remember that as women grow older it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to yell at them. Some are over sensitive, and there’s nothing worse than an oversensitive woman. My name is Benny. Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife, Edna. When I took “early retirement” last year, it became necessary for Edna to get a full-time job, both for the extra income, as well as for the health benefits that we needed. Shortly after she started working, I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from the golf course about the same time she gets home from work. Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don’t yell at her. Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table. I generally have lunch in the Men’s Grill at the club, so eating out for dinner is not a reasonable choice. I’m ready for some home cooked grub when I hit that door. She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. But, now it’s not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner. I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won’t clean themselves. I know she really appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed. Another symptom of aging is complaining, I think. For example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find the time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. But, boys, we take ‘em for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two or three days. That way she won’t have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn’t hurt her any (if you know what I mean). I like to think that tact is one of my strong points. When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. She had to take a break when she was only half finished mowing the yard. I tell her to fix herself a nice cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me too. I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support Edna. I’m not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible.

Page 4: August 2012

4

Nobody knows better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older. However, gys, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other……..Benny. EDITOR’S NOTE: Benny died suddenly on Valentine’s day last year. He was found with a Calloway extra long 50-inch Big Bertha Driver II (golf club)rammed up his backside, with only 2 inches of grip showing. His wife, Edna, was arrested, but the all-woman Grand Jury accepted her defense that he accidentally sat down on it very suddenly.

On Sunday, July 22nd, the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce sponsored the 3rd Annual Saratoga Car show in downtown Saratoga Village. Silicon Valley Chapter members Gary Bohn and Ricky Villa had their trucks entered, and chapter members Mike Guerreiro (and daughter Michelle), Paul Perez, and Jim Dillinger attended as spectators. The day was hot and sunny, but that didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of participants nor spectators. It was difficult, however, to figure out

which people fit into which of those two categories, since the cars where displayed in multiple different parking lots, as well as on the streets, throughout the village, and the huge crowds were seen wandering all over the place to take in the sights. There were also a number of vendors located in the primary show parking lot, and there was a food vendor as well serving a selection of various different BBQ sandwiches. The main draw, of course, was the cars, and what an eclectic bunch there was. There was everything from restored classics, to kit cars, to exotic sport cars, to hot rods, to antiques, to rat rods, and just about anything else you could think of. Judging from the fact that it always had a crowd surrounding it, it would be safe to say one of the crowd favorites was probably the One million dollar + Bugatti being shown in the main parking area. But don’t sell any of the other cars short…..they were all great, and there were 158 entries to choose from. All in all, the event would have to be considered a success.

Well fellow truckers the month is now here. NORTH SOUTH and Morro Bay here we come!!! We have been keeping busy the end of each week, with going to A & W on Thursday nights. There is nothing like a root beer float on a hot night. F-100 night on July 12th was light in attendance by F-100’s but then it did not help being in the 100’s that day. Then there are Friday nights at Royce Farms. It has been getting bigger and better. This is another night of great food and music to end the long week. CVC car club has been joining us on these nights. The other Friday nights we are at the Bagel Express show put on by CVC themselves. Their attendance has been growing there too. It was a dual purpose day on July 15th and Summer Bash. Art was going to try to bring his truck, but Thursday night on the way home from A & W he had valve trouble. We decided to do some swapping before we went to the Fruit Yard, so we started early and went to the Stockton Fairgrounds for their annual swap meet. Art found a great buy on an intake manifold for one of his trucks. I am not sure which one. It was over half of what he would have bought retail. So the idea to go before Summer Bash was not in vain. We traveled over to the Fruit Yard in record time. We found the rest of our group and started checking out all the great vehicles. We had a few from each chapter (Livermore, Delta, San Joaquin and us (Port City). Some of the group tried out the poker walk but nobody got a great hand except Art but it was not good enough. We missed everyone else who could not make it. Mother Nature cooperated and made the weather bearable (low 90’s). The raffle seemed to take forever and it did not help that we were not winning. Maybe it was because Sydney was only there in tickets not in the flesh. We could have used her mojo. We want to thank everyone again for coming out to our run in June. We have heard wonderful compliments from many of you. We are already in the planning stages for next year with some extras. We will be getting out flyers real soon. So mark your calendar for June 2, 2013. Be there or be square. See you all at North South.

About Bell Peppers

The bell pepper, also known as sweet pepper or capsicum, is the species Capsicum annuum and native to Mexico, Central America and northern South America. Bell peppers are botanically fruits, but in culinary contexts they are usually considered to be vegetables. Not only are bell peppers delicious to eat and beautiful to look at but they are also packed with nutritional benefits. All bell peppers are high in vitamin C with the red pepper having more than twice as much as the green pepper. The bell pepper is also a wonderful source of Vitamin A., Vitamin B, antioxidants and carotenoids. So load up and enjoy this wonderful combination of taste, looks and benefits!

How to Select Bell Peppers Bell peppers can be bought year-round, but they are most abundant and tasty during the months of August and September. Colors range from the burgeoning colors of green to yellow, and ripen the sweeter-tasting colors of red, orange and sometimes purple and brown, depending on the variety. Picking a good pepper is easy; they should have a smooth and tight skin (no winkles, or soft or bruised spots), plus bright color, and feel firm and sold. A look at the stem is another place to peek: it should appear fresh, green and not dry or desiccated.

How to Store Bell Peppers Don’t wash a pepper until use: ideally store unwashed peppers in a cool place covered with a kitchen towel, or second best is in the vegetable compartment in your refrigerator (but not in plastic, which will create excess moisture). Some even freeze them, either whole, or cleaned, deseeded, and chopped.

How to Prepare Bell Peppers Peppers can eaten raw or cooked. Eating it raw, wash it first, then core it (just cut around the stem with a paring knife). Cut the pepper in half (lengthwise) and then remove any seeds and the white core/ribs---you can try shaking the seeds into the garbage. Don’t be tempted to use water to remove the seeds; it will just waterlog it. The pepper is then ready to be cut into strips, chopped, or diced. For those that want to stuff a pepper, cut it horizontally instead of cutting it lengthwise (don’t forget to remove the seeds and core!). One precaution: even though peppers are typically sweet be sure to wash your hands well when all is said and done---don’t touch your eyes!

Page 6: August 2012

6

Peppers are also delicious roasted. They can be grilled with tongs over a gas burner until blistered and the skin starts to blacken, or in the broiler: simply put the cut pepper halves on a cookie sheet and roast. The best way to peel the skin is to then place the pepper in a bowl covered with plastic wrap or in a paper bag. Steam for about 15 minutes, and then pull the skin off with your fingers (or a knife if they ‘re too hot).

How to Eat Bell Peppers Eaten raw, crunchy bell peppers are wonderful in a Crudités platter and in salads (try adding it to a tuna salad!) They can also be stuffed or sautéed—peppers are a delicious addition to a stir–fry. Peppers also pair well with meat, like a classic Italian sausage and peppers dish, or with steak. Some like to puree peppers into dips, like hummus, or into soups. Stuffed Peppers a Summertime Treat! Quinoa Tabbouleh Stuffed Pepper Ingredients

2 cups Quinoa, well rinsed and drained 1 pound Plum tomatoes, peeled, seeded and diced 2 cups Parsley, chopped 1/4 cup Lemon juice 3 Garlic cloves, minced 1 1/2 tablespoons Mint, minced 1/4 cup Olive oil

This will take about 20 minutes until the quinoa is tender. Fluff the cooked quinoa and spread it out on a cookie sheet to cool. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl combine tomatoes, cooked and cooled quinoa, parsley, lemon juice, garlic, mint, olive oil, pine nuts and season with salt and pepper. Rinse the peppers. Remove the tops and clean out the webbing and seeds. Stuff the peppers with the quinoa mixture and place on a pan standing upright. Cover pan and bake for 45-50 minutes.

IT’S JUST AROUND THE CORNER!! It’s hard to believe, but in barely over 3 weeks time we’ll be in beautiful Morro Bay taking part in the oldest F-100 event in the world. If you haven’t registered for this great show, it’s not too late. There’s a flyer and entry form at the back of this newsletter. Take the time to fill it out and send your entry in. You won’t be sorry. With the change in the event location, and all the efforts by the run committee, this should be one of the best North-South Runs yet, and you won’t want to be left out. I just got this e-mail from Ron Garcia and thought I’d pass it on so anyone interested in a round of golf at North-South could let him know: Gene and I have reserved two tee times (1:30 and 1:37PM) for the Morro Bay Golf Course on Thursday, August 16, 2012. We have a special rate of only $35/player for your green fee with cart for these two tee times. We are looking for four more golfers that can commit to playing. Please let us know if you want to join us. If we do not get any more players then we will have to cancel the second tee time. If you have any questions please call me (916) 660-0640, thank you, Ron Garcia

FIGHT SPEEDING TICKETS WITH THE NEWLY RELEASED IPHONE APP, ‘TICKETDEFENDER’!

TicketDefender tracks and reports vehicle’s speeds to protect drivers from undeserved speeding tickets. TicketDefender is a newly released iPhone App that enables drivers to protect themselves from undeserved speeding tickets by providing a printed report that shows their vehicle’s GPS speed and location prior to the issuance of a ticket. Police radar makes mistakes, lots of them. In America more than 100,000 people per day receive speeding tickets. Some experts estimate that 10-20% of all radar-backed speeding tickets are issued in error and in the case of radar operated from a moving police vehicle the number of inaccurate tickets may be as high as 30%! Yet, the use of Radar is widely accepted and we naturally assume the technology is reliable1. But good news is just an Apple App away. After a truck driver received one these erroneous speeding tickets, he decided that something had to be done. He presented his idea to a friend who is an engineer, and TicketDefender was born. As a user drives their vehicle TicketDefender automatically records the speed, time of day, and GPS location. If the driver is pulled over for speeding, he simply clicks “Press When Ticketed” to capture the last hour of data and generate the free Speed Report and free Map Report. Instructions for how to print these non-editable, encrypted and watermarked Speed and Map Reports are sent to the driver’s email address. These two reports can be used in court as evidence against wrongfully issued tickets to protect drivers from “the officer’s word against mine” situations.

The TicketDefender Speed and Map Reports include the vehicle’s make and model, license number, time and date, the vehicle’s speed recorded every 3-5 seconds and a map showing the vehicle’s location and corresponding speed. If the speed on the TicketDefender report is different from the speed indicated on the ticket, the driver has a valid "not guilty" argument. This report can then be presented in court or with employers in defense of inaccurate speeding tickets. Radar can often clock incorrect vehicle speeds causing an unwarranted ticket, but until the release of TicketDefender there has been no way for drivers to prove that they were driving at a speed that was different from the speed stated on the ticket. TicketDefender can be a valuable tool, both for fighting speeding tickets and for proof of speed at the time of a car accident. TicketDefender is certainly a benefit for any driver or commuter and particularly beneficial for individuals whose livelihood depends on a positive driving record such as truckers, bus and taxi drivers. TicketDefender will track any vehicle in which the phone is located, once the vehicle’s data has been entered. One TicketDefender download can be used for multiple vehicles including company and family member’s vehicles. TicketDefender will also multitask; it continues to track speed and locations while you use the phone and other applications. The one time download of TicketDefender can be used repeatedly to give a lifetime of protection from undeserved or inaccurate speeding tickets.
