Dear Fellow Members, Ramadan Mubarak to you all!Ramadan started in August 2011. For member’s convenience ahead ofRamadan, we have finished 11 CPD Seminars at Dhaka and 5 CPD Seminarsat Chittagong by July 2011. So, there was no CPD seminar in August 2011. TheICAB secretariat and different committees were busy in follow up of theongoing activities. We were busy focusing on the reporting to internationalnetworking reporting and forthcoming events in 2011.Today I would like toshare with you the major activities and initiatives we have undertaken recently.IFRS Training Ist International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Training course wasinaugurated by Dr Atiur Rahman, Governor, Bangladesh Bank on July 01,2011. The training is going on and scheduled to be continued upto end ofSeptember, 2011. Ms Sayema Banu, DD, LPD is coordinating the training.Because of Ramadan and availability of resource persons, we had toreschedule class timings several times, which may have caused inconvenienceto some of the participants. We deeply apologise for this, and in future, we shallbe careful to avoid such inconveniences. Follow up on UK visit in July 2011:Exposures on various issues and learning from ICAEW experiences we aretrying to improve ICAB’s role and services to members, students and otherstakeholders. With this end, we are in communication and doing follow up totake a concrete shape in developing our education materials, IFRS Training,Training of trainers, teachers in Bangladesh. We are in correspondence withICAEW, ACCA, BPP & KAPLAN.ICAB Renovation Work, ICAB On line facilities and Website restructuringRenovation work at CA Bhaban 6th floor, and library floor are going to takeplace soon. ICAB is working for a dynamic website and to introduce on linetraining facilities. We are increasing number of computers for students.Member’s corner with computer facilities is in the pipeline. In the library,photocopier service and tea corner are going to introduced. We are trying toimprove the washroom facilities. During this month, we were busy in planningmeetings with different service providers. For synchronization of work plan andimplementation in a cost effective way, we had series of meetings withSATCOM, BOL, OTOBY, Engineers of Construction Company, architects etc.As IFRS training is going on, and to relocate the secretariat team for therenovation work, there is space constraint. And in the coming month, ICAB isgoing to hold important events. So, students and members are requested to bepatient and to cooperate with us, as you always did.Prospect of Project Developments for ICABFollow up with MOC on ICAB academic complex project is going on.Meeting with external auditorsEntrance meeting took place with Auditors on August 17, 2011. I am sure, newmembers are going to take our legacy ahead.Meeting with DFIDA meeting was held on August 23, 2011 at 9 am between Ms Catherine Martin,Senior Private Sector & Market Development Adviser, Ms. Shahnila Azher,Private Sector Adviser, DFID and myself, to explore collaborations for financiallearning project for women entrepreneurs, SMEs , financial literacy programwith DFID and Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB). Andalso scope to strengthen ICAB capacity and services in the private, public,social sector and financial reporting for good governance. We are also very

much interested to introduce EnglishBusiness Communication course forstudents and members. We havesubmitted a draft concept note on“Bridging between SME / SMPStrengthen Financial Reporting andManagement Services of SMEs andCapacity Building of Small and MediumPractitioners (SMP) of ICAB for pro poorgrowth and employment generation inSME Sector in Bangladesh.” We havesubmitted similar kind of draft to Ministryof Industries to collaborate with SMEFoundation.Meeting with Ministry of Commerce(MOC) Mr Shahadat Hossain, FCA, Vice President ICAB, Ms Suraiya Zannath, FCA,Senior financial Management Specialist, South Asia Region, The World Bankand myself had a meeting with Mr Md Ghulam Hussain, Secretary, Ministry ofCommerce on August 25, 2011. Shawkat Ali Waresi, Additional secretary wasalso there. We updated the Secretary on the Progress with Post Twinningarrangement with ICAEW and also that World Bank is willing for funding theproject.Standing and Other Committee Meetings HeldThe following standing and other committee meetings were held in August, 2011:• 3rd meeting of Taxation Corporate Laws Committee (TCLC) was held on

August 01, 2011.• Joint Meeting between 3 Member Council Sub-Committee and Articled

Students Representative• 3rd, 4th and 5th meeting of Review Committee for Published Accounts &

Reports (RCPAR) were held on August 03, 17 and 27, 2011 respectively.• 3rd meeting of Quality Assurance Board (QAB) was held on August 07,

2011.• 2nd meeting of the Audit Committee was held on August 08, 2011.• A meeting of the 3 member Article Student Committee was held on August

14, 2011.• A meeting of 5-member Council Sub Committee on Case Studies for

President ICAB holds meeting withsenior DFID Officials

President ICAB, Ms. Parveen Mahmud held a meeting onAugust 23, 2011 with Ms Catherine Martin, Senior PrivateSector & Market Development Adviser and Ms. ShahnilaAzher, Private Sector Adviser, DFID, to explore avenues ofcollaboration for financial learning project for womenentrepreneurs, SMEs , financial literacy program with DFIDand ICAB. The meeting also discussed scope to strengthenICAB capacity and services in the private, public, socialsector and financial reporting for good governance.President ICAB also expressed our interest to introduceEnglish Business Communication course for students andmembers. ICAB has already submitted a draft concept noteon “Bridging between SME / SMP Strengthen FinancialReporting and Management services of SMEs and CapacityBuilding of Small and Medium Practitioners (SMP) of ICABfor pro poor growth and employment generation in SMESector in Bangladesh.” A similar draft has also beensubmitted to Ministry of Industries to collaborate with SMEFoundation. n

PAIB Committee Publishes Competent and Versatileto Highlight Relevance of Professional AccountantsCompetent and Versatile: How Professional Accountants inBusiness Drive Sustainable Organizational Success waspublished by the PAIB Committee last month to support theglobal accountancy profession in responding to changingexpectations of society, financial markets, and organizations,and promote the value of professional accountants inbusiness to their organizations.Organizational needs are evolving faster than ever, andprofessional accountants need to adapt to these changes tobest serve their employers, and maintain relevance. With thispublication and the accompanying employer-focusedbrochure, the PAIB Committee is striving to support theglobal accountancy profession and help professionalaccountants and their organizations create long-termsustainable success.Eight drivers of sustainable organizational success providethe basis for understanding how the global accountancyprofession needs to support the development of professionalaccountants. The expected key areas of competency forprofessional accountants are broken down within each ofthese drivers: • A customer and stakeholder focus; • Effective leadership and strategy; • Integrated governance and risk and control; • Innovative and adaptive capability; • Financial management; • People and talent management; • Operational excellence; and • Effective and transparent communication. Individualized Versions of Competent and VersatileAvailable for Professional Accountancy OrganizationsIn order to assist professional accountancy organizations tomake the most of the employer-focused version ofCompetent and Versatile, the PAIB Committee is offering towork with IFAC members and associates to allow for localcustomization of the brochure.For example, CPA Australia and the Institute of CharteredAccountants in Australia (ICAA) jointly branded thebrochure and made it available at the Confederation of Asianand Pacific Accountants Conference in Brisbane, Australiathis week.3. Call for Case Studies Highlighting the Roles ofProfessional AccountantsFollowing the publication of Competent and Versatile, thePAIB Committee is in the process of bringing together somepractical examples of how professional accountants aresupporting their organizations in the eight drivers ofsustainable organizational success listed above4. CMA Canada 2020 Vision PaperCMA Canada recently released Forecasting the Future Roleof the Management Accountant, its 2020 Vision paper. Thepaper identifies scenario planning as the definingorganizational capability and a primary managementaccountant skill for the coming decade. The paper alsoexplores the major activities seen as essential to themanagement accountant’s role in 2020, including strategicrisk management fueled by (a) technology-enabled dataanalysis applied to a broad collection of indicators; (b)increasingly agile forecasting and planning processes; and(c) fact-based decision making. The research methodologyfor this paper included scrutiny of recently publishedprojections and analyses, interviews, and a roundtablediscussion held in September 2010, in which IFACparticipated.5. Next PAIB Committee Meeting: Toronto, October 19-20, 2011The PAIB Committee’s next meeting will be hosted byCanadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and CMACanada in Toronto, October 19-20. In 2012, the committeewill meet in New Delhi, March 13-14, and participate in theInstitute of Cost and Works Accountants of India’s annualcongress and CFO summit.6. New IFAC Website Coming SoonWe are currently in the process of redesigning the IFACwebsite to better suit your needs. The new site will feature aclean and modern design, a more intuitive architecture andnavigation, expanded content, and topical and timely issues

and insights. Content will be organized around topics andoutputs, and include cross-referencing and tagging, so it willbe easier to find the information you’re looking for, as wellas related resources. New PAIB Publication Focuses on Areas ofCompetency for Professional AccountantsAs organizational needs evolve to accommodate the ever-changing economic, environmental, and social landscape,professional accountants in business (PAIBs) need tocontinue to adapt to these changes in order to best serve theiremployers and maintain relevance. To help PAIBs achievethis, the PAIB Committee recently released Competent andVersatile: How Professional Accountants in Business DriveSustainable Organizational Success. This publication aimsto support the global accountancy profession in respondingto changing expectations of society, financial markets, andorganizations, and to promote and contribute to the valueprofessional accountants in business bring to theirorganizations. Competent and Versatile explains how PAIBssupport their organizations as creators, enablers, preservers,and reporters of sustainable value for their organizations inleadership, management, analyst, and controller roles. Thisemployer-driven approach is also aimed at helping IFACmembers and associates to facilitate sustainableorganizational success through the education, training, anddevelopment of professional accountants.The PAIB Committee has also published an employer-focused brochure to demonstrate the versatility of PAIBs tothose outside of the accountancy field.8. SMP Quick Poll Now Open; Available in English,Spanish, and FranceThe IFAC Small and Medium Practices (SMP) Committee’smost recent SMP Quick Poll is now open. The poll, whichonly takes a few minutes to complete, features questions onbusiness advisory and auditor reporting, in addition toincluding a few questions from previous polls in order togather trending data for the year. This edition of the QuickPoll is available in English, Spanish, and French. Pollingwill close on September 9, 2011. 9. Indian Business Journal Discusses IFAC SMOsIn a recent column in Business & Economy, Dr. JavedSiddiqui, Assistant Professor of Accounting at theManchester Business School, University of Manchester(UK) offers his opinion on the success, and applicability, ofIFAC’s Statements of Membership Obligations (SMOs) inless developed countries. Using developments in Bangladeshand with the Institute of Chartered Accountants ofBangladesh (ICAB) as an example, Dr. Siddiqui outlineshow the SMOs are used to help professional accountancyorganizations follow quality control assurance requirements.Dr. Siddiqui also discusses the partnership between ICABand the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England andWales to improve curriculum for professional accountancydegrees. n
