ANDREWHAZELL, Dave Lewis, Jonny May,Dan Murphy and Luke Narraway help unveilGloucester Rugby’s new look playing shirts, produced in conjunction with KooGa, for the2011-12 playing season. The new partnershipwas announced recently with Koogabecoming Gloucester’s official kit supplier forthe next four seasons.

As a result the new shirts have beeneagerly awaited, by players and supportersalike, and the players were happy to break offfrom training to model them.

The home playing shirt maintains thecherry and white hoops which have provedso popular with supporters but features acouple of modern touches while the awayversion is a totally new, predominantly blackdesign.

Gloucester Rugby’s Head of Sales andMarketing, Pete Grzonka, explained some ofthe thinking behind the new partnership andthe shirts themselves: “We’re delighted to beworking with KooGa who are a specialistrugby brand, dedicated to developing the bestand most effective product for players. At theforthcoming Rugby World Cup 2011, sevenof the teams will be wearing KooGa kit –more than any other brand.

“Reminiscent of Gloucester Rugby’s historyand heritage, this year’s home shirt featuresthe traditional club hoops but with a moderntwist. The black overlaid panels to theshoulders and waist give the illusion of wider

shoulders and smaller trim waist. In terms ofsports psychology, this attention to detail playsa vital part in the team’s mental positivity. Theylook bigger, fitter and more athletic which inturn intimidates opposition,” he continues.

This year’s away shirt colour offers a moveaway from the traditional Gloucester red andopens up a whole range of leisure wearoptions to fans based on its ox blood print.

The replica shirts will be available for pre-order from the club shop at Kingsholm, fromHudson Sports on Northgate Street andonline from Monday onwards. Orders will befulfilled within 24 hours of the shirts arriving instock which is anticipated to be in late August.By purchasing the new Gloucester RugbyReplica Shirt you are benefitting from some ofthe technological advances available to eliterugby athletes.

Most recent arrival – CupidBorn on 11th May, reindeer calf Cupidis the newest arrival to be celebratedat Prinknash.Cupid is so cute, and the only

reindeer calf in Gloucestershire, sodon’t miss this rare opportunity to takesome stunning photographs of thelittle reindeer and her attentive parents.

Don’t forget the rest! There are so many beautiful locations and enchanting

characters to see and meet at Prinknash Bird & Deer Park, and it’s the ability to get so close to all the creatures – andfeedmost of them – that ensures people return time and again. As well as the extensive collection of waterfowl and

peafowl eager to feed fromyour hand, there’s the tamefallow deer, pygmy goats and,of course, the famousPrinknash reindeer – Rudolphand Prancer.Situated in 9 beautiful acres,

the bird and deer parkprovides an array of fantasticexperiences for all ages. Whileit is in contrast to many of themodern day, adrenalin-fuelledattractions, it delivers wonderful excitement in a gorgeous, natural environment – and it just keeps getting better!Prices for both Teal (£80) and the Mad Hatter’s Marquee

(£130) include entry to the park. For further information orto book your special event at Prinknash Bird & Deer Park visitwww.thebirdpark.com or telephone 01452 812727.

FOR decades Prinknash Bird & Deer Park has been awonderful, tranquil destination for children, parents andgrandparents to enjoy beautiful gardens and meet a varietyof wildfowl and other critters eager to make friends – and itjust keeps on improving. In recent times, and in particular the last 12 months, owner

Melanie Meigh has enhanced the experience for visitors byintroducing new features and friends which simply add to thepark’s great charm ...

Teal – the Gypsy CaravanMelanie came up with the idea of ‘Teal’ when she was lookingto create a truly original location where families could book

a child’s party with a difference. Theauthentic caravan is delightful and hashad a great deal of attention paid to thelittle details that make all the difference.Teal is situated between two aviaries

nestled in a clearing. It’s a beautiful spotwhere a complete study area hasbeen created for early learning, andthere’s plenty of space for all to enjoy. You can reserve Teal for children’s

parties throughout the year – seatingup to 14 children and 2 adults inside.A unique venue for the perfect party!

Toffee & TreacleMiniature donkey Treacle and hermum, Toffee, proved a smash hitwith visitors from the outset. Thisadorable duo love all the attentionthey can get – just like all the otherfriends you’ll meet at Prinknash.Just like the visitors, Melanie loves

to spoil her creatures too. Shemade Treacle a very smart rug tokeep her warm last winter and, witha bit of left-over fabric, produced anew fashion accessory – “the ’must

have’ outfit for a miniature donkey” – which Treacle proudlyshowed off on visits to Stroud and Cheltenham.

Mad Hatter’s MarqueeAnother superb venue for that specialevent is the Mad Hatter’s Marquee, introduced earlier this year and situatedin the main enclosure by a stunning pool. With scenes from Alice in Wonderland

depicted on huge canvas hangings, themarquee is a magical place to creatememories for all your invited guests. There is enough room to seat up to 30children.

IT is almost hard to believe that the City ofGloucester was ever laid siege to but, in 1643 duringthe English Civil War, that is exactly what happened. Not only that, it was also one of the key events ofthe Civil War, with only the pitched battles beingmore important.

Gloucester was opposed to King Charles and theRoyalists. One reason cited for this was resentmentfollowing royal taxation. Gloucester passed so muchrevenue in the form of taxes to the crown that it wasunable to assist its own poor. Following the captureof Bristol, the Royalist forces turned their attention toGloucester, arriving at the city in early August.

The Gloucester defences were commanded byLieutenant-Colonel Edward Massey who withdrewhis men from the Tewkesbury, Sudeley and Berkeleygarrisons, as these would be easily overrun, andconcentrated his defence on Gloucester. Masseyflooded the water meadows on the North and Westsides of the city to bolster his defences.

The Royalist troops destroyed all the housesoutside the city walls to make way for artillery andto avoid their use by defenders and cut the watersupply pipes to the city to try and wear down thetheir opposition. As the artillery attacked the citywalls, breaches were desperately filled with earth inan attempt to maintain the stronghold.

The siege continued for a month when finally arelief force arrived, led by the Earl of Essex. Thiswas a very timely arrival for the defenders who weredown to their last three barrels of gunpowder. Only35 people died during the siege.

One extraordinary incident that occurred wasinvolving one Gloucester woman who found a bombwithin the city with its fuse still burning. Instead ofrunning, she had the courage to get a payle of waterand extinguish the fuse. This shows how thedefence of the city was a collective effort as thecitizens of Gloucester joined together, defied theodds and survived.

Short Walks in The Cotswolds in association with

There is a lot packed into this relatively shortwalk with plenty of beautiful scenery to captureyour attention. Allow extra time to admire theviews and to linger in the lovely woodland, especially in the spring when parts of the woodare carpeted in bluebells.A Use the Shortwood car park just off the HaresfieldRoad. Walk back towards the road and go throughthe gap in the wall on the right. Take the leftmost ofthe three paths, signposted ‘Cotswold Way’. Stayon the path until it splits into four. Take the secondpath on the left and follow it to the road.B Turn left onto the road and at the next roadjunction turn left. Cross the road to a stile to the leftof Stoneridge Farm. Bear left and cross the fieldheading towards the stile to the right of the tworadio masts.C Cross the road and turn right. After a few yardscross a stile and head downhill on the path ignoringcrossing paths. Walk down the steep path to thetrack in the valley (Cotswold Way).D Turn left onto the track and walk through the woodstaying on the track until you meet a road. Turn rightand head downhill for ¼ mile (400m) to a bridlewayon the left signposted to ‘Haresfield Beacon’.E Follow the path uphill at first, past Cromwell’sStone and on to meet a road. Turn left onto the roadand walk 30yds (27m) to a path signposted ‘CotswoldWay’ on the right.

1 This stone is known locally as Cromwell's Stone, erected to commemorate the success of theParliamentarians in raising the siege of Gloucesterin 1643. In July of that year Prince Rupert capturedBristol, leaving Gloucester as an isolatedParliamentarian stronghold in the west of England.King Charles also wanted to open up the RiverSevern as a supply artery and he surrounded thecity on 5thAugust. It held out for a month, however, until reinforcements arrived under the Earl ofEssex – around 15,000 men in all. The Kingdecided it prudent to withdraw and gave theRoundheads one of their few successes in the

early part of the Civil War. Why the stone wasplaced here is not known for certain but, if the treesbehind were cleared, there would be an excellentview of Gloucester.

F Turn right onto the path, go through two metalgates and up a steep slope. Cross a stile on the leftwhere the path carries straight on to the right of thefence and bear right towards the triangulation point.

2 The site of the hillfort utilized the naturaldefences of the promontory. The outlook is excellentwith steep slopes on three sides and the fourthclosed off by a rampart and ditch across the neckof land to the east. It covers about 16 acres(6.5ha) in all and is so well sited that the Romansmade use of it in their military campaigns. NumerousRoman artifacts have been uncovered, including acollection of 3000 coins.

3 From the triangulation point at the end of RingHill there is a superb view of the escarpment, andprobably the best outlook over the Berkeley Vale.

Several outliers are visible, including Churchdown,Robin Wood's Hill, and Stinchcombe Hill. In thedistance is the Forest of Dean, forming a backdropto the Severn below, and in good conditions it ispossible to see the Severn Bridge.

G Turn sharp left and walk along the ridge keepingthe valley to your right. Cross the stile and walkalong the narrow path with a fence to your left. Passthrough a gate and head down towards the road.H Just before the road turn right down steps andfollow the path until it opens out into an open field.Bear half right across the open countryside to thetopograph. Turn and head back to the car park.

FREE EYE TESTVOUCHER

MY colleagues and I were invited to try Nordic Walking withlocal trainer Ed Ford. This form of walking exercise involvesusing poles to ensure the upper body muscles are used aswell as the legs.

Nordic Walking is an enhancement of walking as you workharder than usual, yet with the support it feels easier as thepoles help to propel you along. It is actually twice as effectiveas walking without poles and gives you a great workout.

It is a very low impact exercise that uses over 90% of yourmajor muscles and is very effective in conditioning yourabdominal muscles, which provide core stability. NordicWalking reduces the strain on knees and joints and issuitable for all levels of fitness and ability. It’s even great forback, neck and shoulder problems, and Ed has clients thatare in their 70’s!

Ed is a qualified Nordic Walking UK instructor and mycolleagues Alison, Helen and I had a 45 minute tastersession. All poles are provided so all you need is a good pairof walking shoes and weather proof clothing!

We started off by practicing using the poles in variousways to help us learn the correct technique of NordicWalking, and we then increased our pace. Ed ensured thatno one was left behind and was a very enthusiastic andfriendly tutor.

We all found it a very enjoyable experience and it wasactually quite surprising to feel your muscles engaging whilstwalking with the poles. Being outdoors in the fresh air wasabsolutely lovely and we are keen to try one of Ed’s plannedroute classes. I definitely left the session with a smile on myface, a glow in my cheeks and I must admit ... I felt great!

August at last – a month of sun and holidays formost of us with school-age children. Well perhapsnot so much of the sun!If you are going away ...This is the month that the climbing beans you have plantedneed regular picking so as not to stop producing. If you aregoing away, entreat a neighbour orfriend to come in and helpthemselves (and then they canwater them as well!) Pick anycourgettes before you go, even ifthey are way too small becausethey will be the size of marrowswhen you get back! Put any pots of plants into a shady spotif you are away for a few days and stand in paddling pool withan inch of water or so if you have one to keep them going.Strawberries and raspberriesNow is the time to cut-back summer-fruiting raspberry canessuch as ʻGlen Ample or ʻMalling Admiralʼ as their harvestshould be over. Cut them down flush with the soil to stop pests

and diseases taking over and topromote new canes to grow. Peg downthe runners of strawberries to createnew plants either in the ground or intosmall pots of potting compost like johnInnes No.1. Peg them down using u-shaped bits of wire – wire coat hangerscut up work well. Keep them watered

and when they have rooted cut the stem holding them to theparent plant and replant in a newly prepared strawberry bed.Plant late flowering perennialsThis is the time of year that the garden can become a littleboring. Sometimes a garden is really pretty in spring and earlysummer but loses its ̒ oomphʼ by August. If this describes yourgarden you can do something aboutit by popping in some Annuals fromthe garden centre. They are full ofdelicious looking pots of Cosmos,Zinnias and others which willbrighten up a tired border. Thinkabout planting some of the laterflowering perennials such asEchinacea purpurea (the mauvecone-flower), Rudbeckia (a lovely yellow daisy), and Asters(the good old Michaelmas daisies) which will flower well intoautumn and come in colours that look stunning in the earlyevening light, and early mornings covered in dew.Keep your roses under control

August is the time to tidy up climbing andrambling roses after they have flowered. If they are grown over arches or pergolasthey can be a real hazard if their shootsare too long and whipping around in thewind. The shoots should be pliable whenthey are young and are best trainedaround supports in a spiral fashion whichencourages the most flowers. The mainpruning will be done in February but thisis just to keep them under control.

Apple Mac support on your doorstep!Grafx was set up in Cheltenham by Tony andLorna Briscombe in 1989. Along with theirstaff, the couple have now been supplyingand supporting Apple Mac users inGloucestershire for over 21 years. To helpraise awareness of the company, Grafx hasrecently relocated their showroom andservice centre from their Market Street officeto 48-50 High Street.

Supplying and supporting both businessand home users with Apple products, Grafxemploy ten staff with over 120 years ofcombined Mac support experience.

In addition to selling Macs and accessories, they deliver a variety of services. They can‘hold the hand’ of those who are new toMacs with their ‘PC to Mac’ migrationservice, or support ‘fully fledged’ Mac fanswith guidance on the latest products.

They have a dedicated showroom for‘Apple in the Home’, which demonstrates

how Apple can be used for streamingvideo, music and TV around the home.

One of Grafx’s strongest benefits tocustomers is their specialist ‘on-site’workshop – fully authorised by Apple – sothe speed of your Mac being returned to itsformer glory is second to none. The optionto talk to experienced professionals ‘face toface’, and being able to easily drop your Macinto a local Apple Authorised ServiceProvider is both convenient and lessexpensive than driving to Bristol or packingand posting.

Businesses looking for a single companyto help integrate Macs and PCs need lookno further as Grafx are as much at homewiththe PC as they are with the Mac.

“Many people and companies worrythat they will not be able to use MicrosoftOffice on a Mac, but this is not the case.

“We would encourage any business thathas not reviewed their IT for a while to talkto us, as products such as the Blackberry,Mac, iPhone and iPad have changed the waywe run our businesses today. Old schoolsolutions are costly and can often holdback a company’s development,” saysmanaging director Tony Briscombe.

Grafx stock a wide range of accessoriesfor Apple products in store, as well as theApple hardware itself. They also offer Macupgrades and trade-ins.

If your businesses technology could dowith an update, or if you are thinking ofconverting from PC to Mac, give Grafx a callor pop in and quiz one of their friendly teamwho will be more than happy to help.

ARE you in need of a new patio, lawn or driveway? With the springand summer months on their way it is a good time to transform yourproperty ready for visits from friends and family that are joining youfor BBQs and garden parties!

After seeing numerous ‘rogue trader’ programs on tv where shoddywork is exposed and workmen haven’t turned up for the jobs theyhave been paid to do, we all know how hard it can be to find acompany you can trust with your project.

With over 40 years experience, County & Country Roads are alocal, family-run business that undertake paths, patios, drives, tarmac and all types of brick work in the Cheltenham, Gloucesterand Tewkesbury area, and have built up a reputation for qualityproducts and reliablility.

“We pride ourselves on our excellent customer service andguarantee our work for 10 years minimum. We do not ask for adeposit or money upfront as we believe the customer should be happyupon completion of the job,” says Managing Director Sean Gormanwho’s son Jonjo represents the third generation in this family enterprise.

The team have received some excellent feedback from theircustomers too. One delighted customer writes “I would nothesitate to recommend your company as I consider your work tobe second to none” and another pleased customer that had a majordriveway repair says “We believe that value for money has beenachieved and a very high standard of workmanship provided.”

All design work is free, so to find out what County and CountryRoads can do for you – give Sean a call on 07792 676760.

Have you ever sat there thinking to yourself just howcomplex the idea of turning green could be? No,I suspected not, as I hadn’t until recently.Green is the colour of change, generally for the

better. It means go at the traffic lights and is usedfor the super hero when the Incredible Hulk burstsfrom his shirt. Perhaps more subtly it is theprincipal colour of camouflage as we changefrom visible to unseen.Green is good news in the sporting sense too.

We golfers aim to land our ball on it; a racehorsethat is getting used to race conditions is often saidto run green and will ultimately change for the better. But it’s the environmental

question about turning greenthat is the big one. Thegovernment, businesses, councils and increasinglythe public are picking up onthe environmental issue and‘thinking green’. There are still manysceptics, but you have only to look at theextremes of weather that we haveexperienced in the last couple of years to know thatsomething is going on.Noticeably the coalition government, which has

been cutting costs left, right and centre, hasretained its green plans, including the GreenInvestment Bank and the Green Deal. We are allexperiencing changes to our rubbish disposalroutines, with re-cycling now part of our daily lives.Businesses will need to take the lead in the battle

to reduce carbon emissions dramatically. It willinvolve some significant investment, technologicaladvancements and serious changes in culture andattitude. Many businesses have already recognisedthe need and have begun to make those changes. For the rest of us, we need to be committed too

and embrace the changes. Remember, they aregreen and therefore for the better.

I WOULD like to take thisopportunity to introducemyself as the Inspector forthe Gloucester City LocalPolicing Team. I amresponsible for communitypolicing for the wards ofBarton, Tredworth, WhiteCity, Kingsholm, Hempsteadand the city centre itself.

This is certainly a busypart of Gloucester forpolicing and the team havetheir work cut out, whetherthat is assisting with the manyevents that occur inGloucester throughout theyear, tackling local crime and disorder or policing the nighttime economy on the weekends. The community team arethe ones stood on the front line delivering this local policing.

One of our current priorities is tackling the increase wehave seen in thefts from vehicles. There has been a sharpincrease in this type of crime in recent months, andfrustratingly almost half of these offences are still frominsecurities. In these examples opportunists have simply triedthe door handle and found it unlocked. They have then goneon to find the ‘old favourites’ of sat navs and mobile phonesleft inside, which are rich pickings for them.

For this reason I can’t emphasise enough the need to keepvehicles locked when left unattended, but also not to leavevaluables in your cars or work vans if you don’t have to.

We believe, and intelligence indicates, that many of theseoffences are committed by persistent offenders and wecontinue to monitor these people – but please, don’t make iteasy for them to steal your possessions.

Another issue frequently raised for us to deal with is thatof drug dealing in and around the city. Drug offences remaina constant battle for us because they have become soentrenched within parts of society, but with your help we canget these offenders locked up.

In June this year, nine drugs warrants were executed bythe community team alone and all nine of these weresuccessful with drugs being found and persons arrested ateach address. This is purely down to you – the community. The information you continue to provide us, whether that’sdirectly or anonymously, is absolutely vital in getting thesepositive results. We don’t mind whether you choose totelephone Crimestoppers, talk to an officer or simply send ane-mail to the team. All information will be treated in thestrictest confidence and is gladly welcomed.

Ensuring that the local team are focusing on the issuesaffecting you the most is essential to me. For this reason thecommunity team will continue to hold meetings and hostengagement events around Gloucester, to give you theopportunity to tell us what concerns you the most and wherewe, the police, should be concentrating our efforts to make

a difference.
