SCINTILLATING
SUPERSTARS
Dorothy Boyd’s unit name is the Land of Oz
and our winning Dorothy (aka Celine Bennetts)
ran her heart out in sequined red 4” wedge
heels to win that trophy. It was a morning to
remember!
After the race, when the dust settled, the
training began, and Dorothy told her story
about serious family medical issues and how her
Mary Kay business has paid for over
$300,000 of out of pocket expenses.
She created a visual picture of our
MK dream and asked us if our
dream was as strong as a piece of
thread, a length of twine, or a three
inch twisted piece of yarn. She
described how our dream can be
broken, cut or sawed on by our own
worries or from outside sources,
that could be negative clients or
unsupportive family members. She
acknowledged that MK experiences and events like today strengthen our
dreams.
What I also took away was a
reminder that now that we’re a new
area, it’s time for us to put together
a new puzzle of dreams and goals. We each create the picture of how
that looks to us. What do you want
to win, to achieve, to pay for with
your MK profits? When you open up
your puzzle box, you have to have a
picture of what all those pieces look like to put
it together this year?
This is the time to figure out what a new
NORMAL feels and looks like as a member of
this NEW AREA. I WALKED away from the
day, with a clearer picture. And I know that at
every milestone: the Retreat, Leadership, and
our National Debut that picture will be put
together in technicolor!
Your proud National,
Dear Scintillating Superstars,
Get on your marks, get set, GO! The horn
blared and off they went! Who could have
imagined that The Race for Pink September
could have been so much fun? I had a consultant
say, “I wasn’t sure about spending a whole
Saturday, and in an hour, I already know I made
the right decision!”
When I traced back
and shared the 6 year
history of The Hunt for
Pink September, I talked
about each of the special
guests we’ve had. Our
first guest in 2005 was
Eileen Huffman, and
many know that this past
year Eileen lost her battle
with cancer. How fitting that to participate in the
WALK part of our event,
everyone contributed to
the MK Charitable
Foundation. I believe
about 50 of us walked
arm in arm, and raised
over $700 that will be
used for cancer research
and against domestic
violence. We paid tribute
to Eileen, and Kathy and
all of our cancer
survivors.
After the walk, the serious winners pitted
themselves against each other in our first ever
HIGH HEEL A THON. There were 3 heats.
One for flip flops, 2-3 inch heels, and over 4 inch
heels. The winners of each raced in a final heat,
and I have to tell you that the ladies wearing 4
inch spikes might have beat the other runners
even if they didn’t get a few feet edge on that
run. These runners were SERIOUS.
In a fitting tribute to this year’s guest,
Elite Exec. Dorothy Boyd, the winner of the
High Heel a Thon was a director dressed in a
DOROTHY costume from the Wizard of Oz.
Your proud National,
jeanie

Director Name: Bess Muntz
Former Occupation: baker, helped my dad with newspaper business
City/State: Streator, IL
Joined Mary Kay: 2008
Debuted as a director: 2010
# of months of driving free: 9 months
Highest commission check in one month: $1400
What was the sequence of events that brought you into the company? (recruiting layering
process) I put my name in a facial box in November at a craft fair. That year in December, I baked 300
dozen cutout cookies. I outlined every cookie and filled them in with stars. I missed my daughter’s
basketball games, only went Christmas shopping twice, and I didn't get to sit and enjoy the Christmas tree
and lights. In January when I got the call for a free facial, I jumped at the chance to pamper myself and make
myself feel good after a crazy baking holiday. I agreed to go to a meeting at Jeanie’s house. Everyone made
me feel so welcome and at home. I joined the following week.
Why did you join? I was really burned out from all the baking over the last 20 years and was looking for
something to fill its place. My kids were almost out of high school, and I didn't know what I was going to do.
I have always enjoyed makeup and dressing up. This was definitely fate. I couldn't have made up a job that was
more perfect for me.
Why did you want to become a director? I didn't know at first that I wanted to be one. I didn't go to
college, and I wanted to prove to myself that I could be successful. I wanted to make my husband and kids
proud. I forgot about my dream. Growing up, I thought being a business women would be awesome, but
being a mom first was more important because my mom is a great mom. I did that job with all my heart and
soul. Now that the kids will be gone soon, I decided to do something for myself. After I could won a car,
being a director was icing on the cake, and my dream came true of being a professional business woman.
Each month I will feature a different Future Martin Area Director in our newsletter.
Directors have all gone through many of the same issues that you have or may go through in your life and career.
I know if she can… YOU can. I hope you enjoy our new monthly article.
THIS MONTH’S ISSUE OF:
IF SHE CAN, I CAN!
Page 11
What is the one thing that was difficult for you or you were afraid of in this business? I didn't
know there would be something I was afraid of until I had to speak in front of a crowd. That was one.
Although I wanted to be a leader, my fear is do I know HOW to lead and do it in a way where women
will learn and look at you as a good leader?
During what time period did you have the greatest growth of income and what was the
growth? My first year as a consultant, I grew and doing the power start was huge. Asking for referrals
and just doing faces made my business grow. I went on target for my car just as I celebrated my first year.
What do you attribute the growth? I had to keep booking and asking for Q and A's. Once I
understood that you are just asking them to listen to what Mary Kay is about it got less scary. I worried
they thought I was going to MAKE them join when really I just wanted them to know what I do and what
Mary Kay has to offer. All they have to do is give me their opinion.
What advice would you give a consultant who wants to be a Director? What do you want out
of Mary Kay? Once they decide what their path is, I think it's easier to know what you want. I wanted to
teach women and inspire. I want to share that Mary Kay cared about women, and I want women to know
they are special. I think they could talk to a seasoned director and ask as many questions as they can, so
they have all the information to make a decision.
