As I write I am surrounded by boxes,pi les of items for the charity shop, pi lesof borrowed items in need of return andpiles of belongings waiting to be packed.All the while I am assuring myself thatthese things wil l al l find a home andorder wil l eventual ly be restored.Internal ly, I feel l ike a tug-of-war is goingon: sadness and loss at leaving acommunity in Frome we have come toknow and love, but also greatexcitement and anticipation at becomingpart of a new community. Indeed, a newcommunity which we are already sograteful to, for the warm welcome andpractical care they have shown to us, inhelping to decorate and clean thevicarage ready for our arrival.

The emotional tug of war that can pull usthis way and that, during any period ofchange is a normal and inevitable part ofthe process. Change can beuncomfortable and challenging but alsoholds with it new possibi l ities andpotential . At this time of year many facea season of change. Change of school,change or even loss of employment, ahouse move and, in these times ofgovernment spending cuts, perhaps allof us face changes to our level ofcomfort and security. Whatever changes

Scarecrow Competition

There has been an allotment Scarecrowcompetition for some five years, usuallywith about 1 0 - 1 2 scarecrows in threecategories. Somehow we never get thedates right and then find the children areon holiday or we would get more. Thisyear has been a bit special because forsome reason the vil lagers decided tocome up and view them, and in largenumbers! As a result, the idea of aVil lage Scarecrow Competition next yearcame into being.

Bathford Allotments are celebrating their1 30th year of existence and a vil lage-wide competition could help thecelebrations. Scarecrows could be in thefront of houses, visible from the road.The competition would include theallotments and if we managed to get25/30 we could sel l a plan and a trai l inthe shop which would al low people to goout and find them.

Once a date is agreed, judging could bedone Thurs/Fri and plans prepared fortrai ls Sat/Sun. We would need toestablish some criteria for the judgesand entries would need to be listed inadvance. There is already a prizeprovided by the Parish Council and thiswould need to be reconsidered,probably just one category or at themost two.

The school could be involved, with theirscarecrows on their playing fields andperhaps the sports clubs would dosomething on the playing field?

Mike Smith (Allotment Warden) haskindly offered to lead this idea but wil lneed others to help. I f you would l ike tohelp Mike with this idea please contacthim directly on 01 225 859454 or via theParish Council office on 859007

Our new Manager, Kevin Mortimer, isvery well and happily established and,by now, must be known to most of theshopping 'regulars'. He and Liz Tait, ourDeputy Manager, are ensuring that theshop does not stagnate. The layoutchanges. New lines are introduced: I fyou haven't been in the store recently,then a visit is worthwhile.

During the next few months we expect toobtain a l icence to sell alcohol, probablystarting with a selection of good, butaffordable wine. There are plans toenhance the cafe area. Should we offerl ight snacks? It is your shop so why nothave your say?.

Very soon you wil l notice some new'Vil lage Community Shop' road signs onthe vil lage approaches and a website istaking shape - for news, promotions andexchange of ideas.

So here's the well worn cl iche. ForBathford Vil lage Community Shop, it isdefinitely;
