Behind the WheelSteven StacyRegion President

Congratulations to our Roadrunner Region members for having the honor of winning the Ferry Porsche Trophy- Region of the Year Award at the recent 54th Porsche Parade in Keystone, Colorado! This is a traveling trophy awarded each year to a PCA region, beginning in 1961 and named after Dr. Ferdinand Porsche. This trophy was awarded due in part to the great success of Escape 2008 to the Land of Enchantment that we hosted last year. We plan to make ourselves a permanent trophy that we can keep after the PCA trophy travels to the next deserv-ing region next year. But for now, you can view the original trophy at the Porsche of Albuquerque dealer-ship where it will reside throughout the year, except for when we bring it out for special events like the Corrales Round-up, the Christmas Party, and Fiesta del Porsche. We had a really great turnout of Roadrunner Region of around 40 members at the recent Porsche Parade in Keystone. The weather cooperated and all the events took place-concours, autocrosses, ral-lies, and scenic driveouts. Thanks to our many tal-ented members that attended and participated, we managed to take home several trophies from all the events. An interesting thing happened at this Parade that is not the norm- a new launch car, the Panamera sedan was unveiled to the crowd. It wowed the crowd with the fact that it can stop from its top speed of 188 mph. to a complete stop in 7 seconds....Really? It will be shown again at the Monterey Historics/Pebble Beach the middle of August. We have our Die Serie #6 autocross coming up early in August, mark your calendars for August 8th, hosted by Dennis Ledbetter. It is followed by the Deutschmarque Classic

SWMS DE at Sandia Motorsport Park hosted by Russ Kelso and Sean Cridland. This was one of the first events I ever attended on an interesting track local to Albuquerque that you should experience if you have not done so. Even though it’s not an official RRR-PCA event, our members have been supporting this SouthWest MotorSport event for years. We have started planning next years Fiesta del Porsche so we can be ready for our annual event that has become important to so many that attend. If you have input and wish to help- Dennis and Joan Ledbetter have taken on the task and welcome your input. Dennis can be reached at [email protected] Thanks again to the ongoing efforts of John and Phyllis Davis as our Charity persons this year. They recently noted that our Barrett House charity had a mishap with an elderly customer driving through their storefront location at the Barrett House Attic, 4308 Lomas Blvd. N.E. It was quickly decided that the club should give whatever donations we had collected for the year thus far- around $1,800, to help them out in their time of need.

The Goody StoreThe Goody StoreThe Goody Store

Is Now Open!

Now’s the time to get in Roadrunner style! We have several items featuring the custom-embroidered Roadrunner logo: polo shirts, denim shirts, twills, and fleece vests. Prices for these items range from $25 for the polo shirts to $35 for the fleece vests.

If you want to lighten up on the layering and just go for a sweatshirt, we have 3 styles to choose from: 1/4-zip black sweatshirts with the Porsche script in small lettering over the left breast, or in larger, out-line lettering across the chest; sweatshirts with the large Porsche crest; or sweatshirts with the Porsche script in outline lettering across the chest. All of the sweatshirts are priced at $30 each.

We are also featuring pins for you and badges for your car. You can order the Roadrunner pin by itself, or order a name badge with the pin on it. The pins are $5 each and the name badges are $10 each. Car badges are $25 each.

And for those wintry days when you don’t want to drive your Porsche in the white, fluffy stuff, pull up a chair by the fire and open up a great book. There’s Fred Puhn’s “How to Make Your Car Handle” and Stephan Wilkinson’s “The Gold-Plated Porsche”.

Welcome to the Club!Welcome to all our new members and trans-fers! I look forward to meeting you at one of our events! We have several coming up that should be of interest to just about everyone.

Welcome to The Club!

What do we do in the Porsche Club? First timers often want to know: when I join the Porsche Club...what do we do? We know that we get a glossy magazine called Porsche Panorama that shows lots of folks with bright and shiny cars. We see lots of technical articles, some of which go way over our heads. And we’ve just gotten into this new club which tells us that we’ve “made it” in modern society. But...then what?

Not to worry. That’s probably the most-asked question of all new PCA members. It’s almost as if we’ve joined a club that we think might be too good for us.... (that old Groucho Marx line....)

Fear not. Porsche Club of America members -- and especially Roadrunner Region members -- are well known for our friendliness and helpfulness. We’re a diverse region with members who have all kinds of interests. Maybe you’re just into 356’s, those earliest of Porsches, many of whose owners consider them to be the only “real” Porsches. Maybe you’re into high-performance driving or even racing. Maybe you just like owning one of the most technically advanced and most coveted cars in the world because...well, it’s cool to own one.

That’s OK. Our members cover all those bases. Don’t be afraid. Come to an event. Show us your car. Introduce yourself. Chances are that you’ll meet up with someone whose interest in Porsche is similar to yours. Sure, it might take awhile. But everything good always does.

We have a great variety of social events, driving tours, tech-sessions, and a competitive autocross series. If you love Porsches, come join us. We’ll get you headed in the right direction.

PCA’s Region of the Year Needs You!

Do you have an idea for an event that you’d like to see happen? Would you like to see more social or technical events? More racing? More family-oriented events? More events for Cayennes? Whatever it is, the best way to make it happen is to get involved. Sure, it’s a little bit of work, but it’s also a lot of fun with a great group of people who love the same thing you do: Porsches and Porsche-people! Don’t be afraid, get involved and help out your fellow Porsche advocates. The RRR Board has appointed a nominating committee to find a slate of officers for next year’s board. After soliciting volunteers we will put together a ballot to send out with the October Roadrunner Ramblings. Positions to be filled are: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and five Members At Large. Contact Nominating Chair Tony Richey or any of the Nominating Committee (John Davis and Dennis Ledbetter) if you have an interest in serving in any of these positions and helping out your club for the year 2010. Or, maybe you know someone you’d like to nominate?

Nominations will be accepted from August 11 to September 10, 2009. Nominations must be submitted to the Nomination Committee and Secretary in writing and properly accompanied by the oral acceptance of the nominee.

There are many awards given out during the week of a Porsche Parade. Some of them are for speed in autocrossing, some are for excellence in concours or precision in rallying. Some are for overall excellence and life service during an individ-ual’s service to PCA. And one is for the Region that distinguishes itself during the year for it’s range and excellence of activities in competition, its service to its members to its community and -- in general -- dedication to the spirit of the Porsche community of excellence and friendship. It’s an award that recog-nizes the enthusiasm and activity of a Region and its exemplary enthusiasm for all things Porsche and for it’s maintaining tradition and excitement for its members. During the 2009 Porsche Parade at Key-stone, Colorado the Roadrunner Region was named PCA’s 2009 Region of the Year. It happened at the Concours Banquet when other accolades and presentations were made to some of the great luminaries of the Porsche Community. But at one point those of us from our little region felt our ears

perk up as the announcer started talking about the “little region that could” and all its accomplishments of the past several seasons, including Escape 2008, a thirty-plus year tradition of Fiesta del Porsche, an almost forty year tradition of Corrales Round-up, a solid and growing charity drive, and endless partici-pation in autocross, rally, concours and touring over the years. Though many of us we sitting far apart in the large ballroom, it was only a short matter of time before we all realized: hey, he’s talking about US! And we made our way up to the stage to accept one of most prestigious trophies of the evening from Porsche AG Club director Paul Gregor and PCA President Kurt Gibson. It was certainly an evening to remember for those who were present, but it is also a great tribute to all those Roadrunners over the past forty years who have lovingly given so much of their time and energy toward making this the great region that it is. Congratulations and thank you, to all the Roadrun-ners who have helped make this region a great one!

Roadrunner Region is PCA’s 2009 Region of the Year!

Paul Granone photoPorsche Parade at Keystone a Great Success!A Large Contingent of Roadrunners Represent the Region Well

Porsche Parade made its sixth stop in Colo-rado during the last week of June, first week in July and it was an event to behold. While many of us struggled with the high elevation (9300 feet above sea level) the first few days, it turned out to be an event of lofty proportions that delivered at every turn. Kathy and Walt Fricke (you may remember Kathy as Zone 9 Rep a few years back) and their team of volunteers from the RMR, AMR, and around the country put on a great show for all the visitors. Certainly the concours d’elegance event was an early high point in the week. Staged under perfect weather conditions at the gorgeous Key-stone Ranch Golfcourse, there were great displays of historic Porsches, a great corral of non-competing Porsches of all shapes and sizes, and -- of course -- all the great concours competitor cars which were gleaming in the Colorado sunlight. It’s always amazing to talk to first-time Parade goers and get their reactions to the week of events and this year was no different. Many of the Roadrunners on hand were at their first and by the second or third day you could see a bit of a glaze in their eyes. There’s simply SO much to take in: all the competitive events, the amazing cars all

over the place, the driving tours, seeing friends and making new ones, and that doesn’t even get into the fantastic venue that Summit County Colorado provides in terms of sheer beauty and great shops and restaurants. Of course the Autocross is always a strong point for Roadrunners. Since we don’t have a strong DE schedule, we tend to be very good and killing cones. At the awards banquet, it seemed like almost every class had a Roadrunner taking a trophy. The Simons took home a trophy in concours and Bill and Sammie Oaks won the gimmick rally. And we all know by now that the Roadrunners took home Region of the Year honors. The new Panamera was premiered at the Concours dinner to a standing ovation. Porsche was even kind enough to let everyone climb in and out of it to prove that it is truly a beautiful, well made and comfortable vehicle befitting of the Porsche brand. It was even rumored that a few lucky people got to ride in it on the twisty roads above Keystone. By weeks end, people were conflicted as to whether they wanted to return home or start the whole thing up all over again and see more and more great Porsche activities!

Nuts and Volts by William Agnew

If it hadn’t been for the chain tensioners I’d have really been ticked off. Porsche struggled for nineteen years to come up with a fix for the chronic failures of those two critical parts on air-cooled 911 engines. So when I found two shredded inboard CV joint boots while changing the oil on our 2002 Boxster S (a car with just 50,000 miles on it!) I thought of the chain tensioners, trying to rationalize my newly discovered problem. “All Porsches have problems,” I said to myself, “ Why it’s part of the mystique of the marquee.” The sight of those boots set my mind racing, for as a home mechanic every problem with a Porsche presents a dilemma, deciding to pay for a fix, or to do the work myself, no matter how challenging or nasty. Suspension work? Lying under the car, big bolts to remove, pullers to fit into tight spaces, grease all over everything, and what exactly do CV joints look like anyway? This wasn’t going to be easy. A chat with John Connell, owner and guru of European Automotive Service up here in Santa Fe, suggested that a fix was going to cost over a thousand dollars, not a far fetched sum given that the rear suspension had to be pulled apart to get at the axles. This day and age a grand is big bucks for this architect, so I resolved to DIY.

First stop was the web and a search of the technical forums that have been a lifesaver for this amateur confronted with ever more complex cars to fiddle with, even though they are cluttered with junk and difficult to search. I looked at Pedro’s Garage, 986forum.com, and renntech.com first, and at least for axle boots, I found input from all three. There were three different takes on how to get the axles out, but they were similar enough that I figured I had the proper education to proceed. For parts I first turned to Sunset Porsche in Oregon. They sell genuine Porsche parts at close to cost, much much less than Premier. The guys on the phone up there, I’ve talked with Jeff and Luke lately, always seem to know something about what I’m up to, and all of the little pieces I might need to get where I’m going. $200.00 worth of parts is on the way, almost everything I need except the all-important CV joint grease, which, even at Sunset prices, is $25.00 per 100-gram tube, and I’ll need six, they tell me. While I’m waiting for the FedEx guy to deliver, I’m educating myself about molybdenum disulfide grease and what might be so great about the Lubro Moly stuff Porsche sells, the Lubro Moly stuff Performance Products sells for $4.00 a tube, and the Swepco stuff from Pelican parts. By the next RRR issue I’ll have the Boxster’s boots fixed, but you’ll be hearing about my trip to Pebble Beach first, then in the fall, a blow by blow of the work I did.

“Deep DIY”

Remember When? From the Archives of the Roadrunner Ramblings, by James Hume Roadrunner Region Historian

30yrs ago. On the cover: promoting the 8th annual Corrales Porsche roundup for “club members, non-members, spouses, girlfriends, mistresses, kids but no dogs.” A rally school and picnic is advertised for Santa Fe for mid-August. Dave Stinchcomb won the Speedster street class trophy in Arizona with his red ’55. Autocross/

Driver’s School #2 was to be held at the Digital Equipment Corporation parking lot in September. RRR President Bill Swope warned that JC Whitney had filed bankruptcy leaving thousands of customers with unfilled orders. Bet you wish you had: a Nambe RRR limited edition key ring was going for $5.

25 Years Ago 1984 -- On the cover: a pen and ink rendering of a ride the artist hoped to see at the 13th annual Corrales roundup. The 6th annual Doc Longs all-you-can eat pancake breakfast was set for August 5th in the Sandias. Congratulations to Ken and Mary Strasser for posting the best overall score out of 49 participants in the

Fiesta Rally. Cindy and Marty took the trophy in the novice class. The Llano Estacado Region invited all RRRs to the Porsche Roundup in Amarillo in mid-September. The West Texas Region was offering a 356 Expo and a timed driving event in Lubbock in mid-August. Bet you wish you had: Rocky Mountain Region was hosting a Labor Day DE and $50 bought you three days on the track at Aspen’s Woody Creek Raceways.

20 Years Ago1989 -- On the cover: a 356 with a righteously solved engine cooling issue. European Imports offered to sell one of the last 1989 911 3.3 litre turbos. Pick one up and bring it out to the August 27th Autocross at The Pit and see if you can do the promised 0 to 60 in 5.3 seconds. The Tex-Mex Challenge in Ruidoso in

September will be run on a hot-rod course one-mile long with some high speed areas. Hank Watts of the Loma

Prieta Region (Arizona) share a great article on DIY paint repair for both single stage and two stage paints. Bet you wish you had: RRR President Mark Hanna was selling his “hardly driven” 1964 356c for $11,500. Gary Smith was parting out his fire damaged 1973 911 taking offers for S brakes, a 915 transmission, BBS alloys and the right side SS heat exchanger.

10 Years Ago 1999 -- On the cover: a 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet. RRR President Neil Alessio reported on the autocross held at the Santa Fe airport following the Santa Fe Air Show. RRR co-sponsored a well-attended PCA Club Race at Second Creek Raceway. The Porsche/BMW

Challenge DS #7 was held at the State Police Academy on August 1st. Carrera Region invited PCAers to put down some beers at their October Fiesta ’99 in El Paso and then put down some rubber at Arroyo Seco Motor Plex. Rich Fletcher wrote of the DE#6 held at the Farmington Police track. Tech Chair David Gardners offered advice on upgrading to turbo tie rods. Bill Swope told the RRR Board that earthmoving at Sandia Motorsports Park was completed and retaining walls were going up. Bet you wish you had: Barry Kirk offered a “very clean” 1978 911SC with only 13k miles. The asking price wasn’t mentioned.

5 Years Ago 2004 -- On the cover: Future RRR member Dylan Gonzales cautiously accepting a prize at Parade. RRR President Russ Kelso thanked the Stinchcombs for their 34th year hosting the Corrales roundup. Brian LeDuc sponsored DE #4 in Farmington making the RRR’s first visit to Magee Park a big success.

RRR instructors were supplemented in Farmington by guest instructors from the SCCA. After school on Saturday, it was “slalom ‘til you puke” Saturday with lots of cones and uphill and downhill sections. Sean Cridland wrote about setting the world record as the fastest man on skis. Sean did 162 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats, on skis, bolted to the top of a very small, very fast car. Bet you wish you had: Bill Orendorff offered his 1983 911SC Targa, overhauled, updated and repainted.

I’m writing this just a day after arriving home from Porsche Parade 2009 at Keystone, Colorado. If you were there, you know just what a wonderful time it was. If you weren’t, you missed the best chance to go to a Parade in our own Zone in quite awhile and a fantastic event that will be talked about for years to come with great pride and affection. Kathy and Walt Fricke and their team of volunteers did a fantastic job with a huge undertaking. I can’t say enough about the event and the people. It was just a marvelous week. For me it began on Saturday, June 26 in Breckenridge, Colo-rado. I immediately started encountering Parade goers on main street. Believe it or not, there were a couple of Porsches who were just passing through and didn’t even know there was a Porsche Parade going on! Sunday got going very early, as I joined the PCA Ex-ecutive Council to take notes and pitch in my two cents here and there as local Zone Rep. There are a num-ber of things going on in the world of PCA and I can talk about a couple of them here. One is Extended Passing for DE events and the other is a new and improved PCA.org website that will be appearing soon. Extended Pass-

ing has been tested at several events back east this spring and will be available on an event-by-event vol-unteer basis and only for the advanced and instructor groups. Your presidents will be receiving the info soon and getting the information out to the DE chairs and committees. The website changes will be self-evident later in the month as you check out the PCA.org site. Monday was more meetings, starting with the Zone Reps meeting, then moving into the PCA Nation-al Board Meeting. Among the jobs for the Zone Reps is the choosing of the PCA Escape site. We heard sev-eral great presentations for the 2010 Escape, but it was the proposal of the Canada West Region for an event at Sun Peaks, British Columbia. Pencil it in on your calendars for mid-September of 2010. It looks to be a great event. Speaking of PCA Escape, the event coming up in Dayton, Ohio (Escape to the Birthplace of Aviation) is building momentum, with Zone Rep Roy Wilkinson reporting that the Ohio committee has already received over 500 inquiries for information. Clearly, Escape is picking up momentum as a Nation-al-level event. Finally, after all the meetings were over, I could begin my Parade recreational activities. I usually try

to stay away from the concours, because I’m much more into driv-ing than cleaning. But this year I gave it a try. Though I didn’t place, I did have fun and met some great people. I’m not really a rally-ist either, so I signed up to help out. It was great fun. I was lucky enough to be paired with for-mer PCA president Bert Propp, a fun and interesting guy who has been Captaining check-points for over 50 years. Also joining us as tim-ers and runners were Andy and Terri Williams

of the Alabama Region, and Joe and Nancy Warren of the Rocky Mountain Region. Also, Delores McKinnon of the Sacramento Region. We were stationed at the base of Ski Cooper near Leadville. What a great loca-

In the Zone

tion: quiet, cool, and beautiful. Later, at the Concours dinner, my home re-gion was honored with the Ferry Porsche trophy for Region of the Year. That was a special moment to see all the hard work by all of our members over the years get recognized. Then, Porsche AG and Porsche Cars North America took the opportunity to surprise all the attendees with the North American premiere of the 2010 Porsche Panamera. Wow! Fantastic! They even let everyone paw over it and sit in it. I can’t wait to drive one and check it out myself. Thursday meant one thing: Autocross. Event Chair Dale Thero and his volunteer team set a great, flowing, rhythmic course that fully utilized the Tender-foot Lot right next door to the Convention Center. I participated in the Cayenne class. This is a class that is definitely growing and shows that the Cayenne is increasingly finding acceptance in the Porsche com-munity; much more so than even two years ago! Thursday afternoon I took the time to check out the RC Autocross where kids and adults alike were trying their skills in the courtyard near the Ice Cream Social. Friday rolled around with the Tech Quiz and some social activities during the day, then

the Autocross awards in the evening and suddenly it was Saturday, the last day of the event with the Volun-teer Workers lunch and the final Victory Banquet. And suddenly what everyone had planned and worked for so long came to a close. What a fantastic time it was. The Rocky Mountain and Alpine Mountain Regions proved that they can put on a World-Class event of fantastic proportions and again I have to thank Kathy and Walt Fricke and their team of volunteers. As Zone Rep, I was happy to meet so many of our members. Several of you took me up on my invita-tion to introduce yourselves if you should see me dur-ing Parade and I appreciate that you did. It’s always rewarding to meet members of the various Regions in the Zone and to welcome lots of our visitors from the rest of the country. As has been said so many, many times: It’s not just the cars, it’s the people. I look for-ward to seeing all my friends again and meeting even more of you.

Well, it was fun while it lasted. Nanette and I were playing to a large, happy crowd, and while it was hot, we had our fans blowing on us to keep us from sweating all over ourselves. Everything was clicking for about six songs, and then our micro-phones went dead. Turns out, it wasn’t just our sound system. It wasn’t just the Corrales Bistro. It was most of Corrales! Many of our Roadrunners had at least been served dinner by then – but not everyone. We all talked and visited while the rumors made their way around the crowd, and the prevailing rumor was that some car had hit a power pole and that it would be the next day before power was restored. So eventually the Roadrunners left, and about twenty minutes later, as Nanette and I tried doing a little

acoustic set, guess what – the power came back on. All of a sudden it was busi-ness as usual, and we proceeded to play until 9:30 to a new, later crowd. The final energy verdict is that it was simply a “brown out” due to an overloaded grid. So maybe we’ll try this again with the music stuff – maybe at the Range, or maybe at the Bistro, or maybe both. The Bistro people were so excited about having us and our cars – they were absolutely giddy. I feel especially bad for them. The bottom line is that I’m really sorry some of you had to go

elsewhere to eat, and I’m sorry you faithful M&G fol-lowers only got to hear six songs. I promise we’ll do this again, and we’ll give you a heck of a show.

The Lights are Out, but We’re Still Here!
