Celina and the other island Filipina queens of Oahu, the Big Island, Kauai and Molokai competed in the four categories of Judges Pre- pageant Interview, Talent, Swimsuit, and Terno/Speech. In a very rare occurrence, and possibly the first ever in the State's pageant history since its inception 50 years ago, Celina captured first in every judging phase of the competition. Celina’s talent was a self- choreographed contemporary ballet to the song “Dahil Minahal Mo Ako” by popular Filipina artist Sarah Geronimo. Her Terno gown was artistical- ly designed by Mr. Peter Lee, well-known designer of Maui, which was adorned with the Sampaguita, the national flower of the Philippines (also known as the Pikake) which had been hand beaded by her grandmother 31 years ago for her mother’s gown worn in the 1978 Miss Maui Filipina pag- eant. Baisa became adopted daughter of the Municipality of Badoc by resolu- tion approved by the town’s Sangguniang Bayan. Badoc Mayor Thomas N. Torralba presented the resolution to Councilmember Baisa on July 15 at the Office of the Mayor. The staff of the municipality, members of the Sangguniang Bayan, and Baisas’ relatives attended the presentation of the resolution. Sherman Baisa, husband of Councilmember Baisa, accompa- nied her to Badoc. The Baisas trace their roots to Badoc, with Sherman’s father, Cirilo, migrating to Hawaii in 1921 or 88 years ago and never came back. The Baisas could not find the words to describe their first-ever visit to Badoc. Mayor Torralba and his staff searched for Sherman’s living rela- tives and arranged for a meeting between them at the reception held by the municipality for the coun- cilmember. Badoc Adopts Councilmember Gladys Baisa HONOLULU—As part of its year-long celebration of the Visayan centennial anniversary in Hawaii, the Congress of Visayan Organizations (COVO) held the Visayan Century Awards Gala on July 19 at the DeRussy Hall of the Hale Koa Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii. Gracing the occa- sion were Honolulu City Managing Director Kirk Caldwell, representing the Mayor, and Consul Paul Raymund Cortes, acting head of post of the Philippine Consulate, both of whom gave brief mes- sages. There were three award categories: posthumous, organizational, and individ- ual.
