It may seem it’s a little early to havetickets on sale or an event in October,
but the Centennial Gala Committee eltthis is an appropriate time.
Special guests have been invited toattend the gala, though so ar only theHonourable Donald S. Ethell, retired col-onel, and Lieutenant Governor Generalo Alberta has confrmed attendance.
Entertainment will include a pianist
during the cocktail hour, and the South-ern Stardust Big Band, and 18-piece
band and vocalist, will be there to pro- vide plenty o dancing music.
“The Centennial Gala Committee, comprised mostly o citizens o Strath-more, continue to work hard at ensur-ing this will be a very memorable andenjoyable evening or all who plan onattending,” said Sobol. Tickets can only be purchased online
or at the Town Ofces, and are selling at$75 per person. Tickets to the Gala in-clude a complimentary program, a com-plimentary proessional photo, compli-mentary wine (two bottles per table)and birthday cake served at 11 p.m.

EIGHTH ANNUAL KITZ 4 KIDZ CAMPAIGNProgram Provides School Supplies to Children Who Need Them Most
Value Drug Mart is set to kick off the eighth annual Kitz 4 Kidz campaign. The Kitz 4 Kidzprogram is a community initiative designed to collect and provide school supplies for
children in our region who are unable to begin the school year with the basic necessities. This four week program begins August 2011 and all donated school supplies collected at
the local Value Drug Mart will stay in our community.
Over the past six years, Value Drug Mart has been providing school supplies for childrenwho need them most. The Kitz 4 Kidz program was introduced to raise awareness and
provide school supplies for less fortunate children, while ensuring donations stay in ourcommunities. The program has been a success. Cash donations, individual supplies and
over 25,000 kits have been sold totaling over $130,000 in donations made to localcommunities across Alberta and British Columbia.
Donations can be made at your local Value Drug Mart. Individual school supplies andcash donations are also welcome. You may also choose to donate from two different
“kitz” available in-stores. Each kit includes an assortment of pre-selected items and
costs only $5.If parents are unable to provide their children with the required school supplies, they
should inform their child’s teacher or principal of the school. Teachers can then contact their respective School Board for the requested items. Supplies are given discreetly to
ensure privacy.

People who attended Saturdays powwow at Siksika Na-tion may not have realized they were witnesses to a his-torical moment. Before the competition began Chief Fred
Rabbit Carrier, of Siksika Nation, and Chief Duane Antoinefrom Poundmaker signed a Memorandum of Understanding,MOU.
“We have a strong history amongst ourselves in business, sports, education, cultural and there’s honour and respect
between the nations,” said Bryan Tootoosis, from Pound-maker.
“It’s really important for the future of our grandkids, andthe kids that are unborn to recognize, and to know thatChief Poundmaker was adopted by Chief Croowfoot. That’sa big history for us back in Saskatchewan,” said Antoine.
Poundmaker (Pitikwahanapiwiyin) was adopted by Crow-foot (Isapo-Muxika) in 1873, following a Plains Indian cus-tom to replace one of his own sons killed in battle. Pound-maker was a political leader and had signed treaty six. The MOU is to build capacity as far as exchanging knowl-

“It (the MOU) was signed last year but it was not signed by our chief so I requested for proper protocol, the chiefs
have to sign. The only time that we were able to do that wasduring our powwow.”

One of the most dreadful things afamily can imagine created a commu-nal gathering of the Crowfoot commu-nity, Aug 10.
Coming together at a white schoolhouse, a fundraiser was in effect, withthe collective incentive to raise money to help aid Heather and Andrew Limband family, who recently lost their home to a re on July 19. The family was fortunate enough
that no members of the household were in the home at the time of there; parents Andrew and Heather werein Moose jaw, eldest daughter Court-ney was away working in Regina. The youngest, David, was at Bible camp, and Stephanie was out riding horses. The Limbs were clearly not left alone
in dealing with the tragic aftermath of a lost home, thanks to the Crowfootcommunity’s efforts in trying to helprestore what was lost, as well as help-
ing the family move forward. The fundraiser included a silent auc-tion, as well as a live auction, events which were largely organized by Alisonand John Sanden (who was the night’sauctioneer). The many auctioned items were donated from contributors com-ing from Strathmore and area.
Food and beverages were provided,as well, musical talent was showcasedfrom certain members of the Crow-foot community, including a bagpipeplayer and also a duo playing their vio-lins. The social aspect and night’s pro-gram was largely put together by BarbBreaker.
Following the many pleasantries, many stories were shared from those
close to the family, all describing how the re had impacted their lives. Thegeneral emotion was a sense of grati-tude. Little attention was paid to what
was lost, but rather, the gifts that weresaved were the dominate focus.
Community member Norma LaFont, who has opened her home to the Limbfamily, which she also shares with her husband Jeff and son Levi, expressedthat in doing so, it has been a gift initself.
“I believe that whatever you pray
for or focus for in life gets deliveredto you,” said LaFont. “I always believedthat the best comes out of the worst sit-uations, and for us, the best has beenthat we’ve gotten to know them bet-ter, and have been able to be there for them with a positive attitude.” The Limbs are very thankful that a
great portion of their house had sur- vived the ames, and were extremely amazed by the amount that was saved, including precious mementos that withheld strong sentimental value.
“It was a very old, train station housefrom the 1930’s, and being that old andmade of wood, we thought it would just go up in a shot, and it actually
worked the opposite. The wood was sodense that it didn’t really go off,” saidHeather Limb.
Consequential to the re, the largesttheme that the Limbs saw emerge wasa sense of community.
“I remember dad seeing smoke onthe horizon and jumping in the half ton with pails and buckets and goingto ght res and that’s just what we do. Andrew didn’t really see a lot of that because he didn’t grow up here andhe’s very strongly impacted by that,”said Heather. As for what is to be expected in the
future, the Limbs hope to start fromscratch instead of rebuilding parts of the house that were damaged in the
re.“We’re denitely staying in the com-
munity, it’s been really stressful but in-credible,” said Heather Limb.

If you’re overwhelmed with everything you need to do to
get ready before heading for college, here are a few tips tohelp ease the stresses on both you and your parents. Have
everything you need purchased, packed and ready to go.
Knowing what to bring is just as important as, knowing what not
to bring. Know exactly what’s in your dorm room and don’t forget
these essentials…
Quarters or laundry - try to keep a roll or two on hand so you
don’t run out when you need them.
Laundry basket, hamper or bag - given that space is at a
premium for college students, this should double as a way tocarry your clothes from your room to the laundry room.
Shower caddy - you’ll most likely need to carry your shower
items (soap, shampoo, conditioner, razor etc.) from your room
and back.
Shower shoes or fip-fops - make sure you have something toprevent catching or stepping in something nasty.
Robe - you’ll need something to wear back and forth to theshowers. Not everyone is comfortable in just a towel, (or some
aren’t comfortable seeing YOU in a towel)!
First aid kit - something simple like a small case with band
aids, gauze and tape will help those with small injuries.
Sewing kit - you might just need a button sewn back on
to that favorite shirt or some minor
mending might be required.Small toolkit - a basic tool kit with
a small hammer, screwdriver (withdifferent tips), wrench, tape measure
and a few other small essentials will
come in handy.
Hangers - you don’t want to arrive at
school with tons of clothes and nothing to hang them on.
Cup, bowl, plate, ork, knie & spoon - these come in handy when you order
that late night pizza or other snacks
during your stay.
Can opener - this one doesn’t really
need explaining!
Clean up - Cleaning wipes and paper
towels are a good idea to keep on hand
for clean up and those inevitable spills.Keychain/lanyard - most students
have a keychain that holds their keys
and student ID, so get a sturdy one that
will be hard to lose.
Extension cord/power bar - dorm
rooms are notorious for not havingenough plugs.
Small an - most residences don’t
have a/c, and those tiny rooms can heat
up, so a small fan will do wonders in
your room.
Extra long sheets - check with yourschool before buying or packing sheets,
some dorm rooms have extra long twin
beds which standard sheets won’t t.
Umbrella - if you’re packing during a
sunny day, this might slip your mind, butyou’ll be grateful for it the rst time it
rains on campus.

when our largest customer, the U.S., isn’t shoppingso much, Canada should be in the business of of-fering others access to our goods and services. Athome in Alberta, we are prepared to meet the chal-lenges of supplying new customers in new markets.
We have never shied away from competition when we see opportunities to expand our trade and mar-ket our goods.
Canada’s wealth has always relied on our exports. A weak global economy hurts a nation like ours. Wehave to work at nding ways to improve our po-sition. Our Conservative government is doing that
work.
As nations in the global economy experienceeconomic turmoil within their own borders, by comparison, Canada’s national economy remainsstable, credible, and an attractive place to invest. Itis clear that our Conservative government is doingthe work necessary to prevent the serious nancialand economic problems other nations are facing.
As they turn to Canada to strike trade deals andimprove their own lot trying to emerge from theglobal recession, Canadian workers and their fami-lies prosper.

Rural family enterprises are the largest and mostsignicant group of business owners in Alberta. Al-most 70 per cent of family-owned businesses fail
before the second generation, due to lack of re-sources in helping families transfer assets, owner-
ship and leadership to the next generation. Thanksto the success of the Alberta Business Family Insti-tute’s (ABFI) Creating Pathways for EntrepreneurialFamilies, rural Alberta families now have access toprogramming focusing on succession planning andknowledge transfer, allowing rural Albertans equalaccess to quality and relevant business educationopportunities. This program, based out of the U of A School of
Business’s ABFI, helps families transition assets tosons, daughters and other young people by equip-ping them with the tools to successfully transfer family businesses from one generation to the next. Not only that, but Creating Pathways is increasingthe number of highly skilled and trained peopleto lead business initiatives in rural communities,
diversifying employment opportunities in rural Al- berta and encouraging young people to remain inand return to rural communities. The Rural Alberta Development Fund contrib-
uted $1.5 million to the Creating Pathways project, which has not only delivered on its goals, but far exceeded them. With RADF funding support, Cre-ating Pathways is successfully delivering meaning-ful and practical programs to participants all over rural Alberta. By saving family businesses, CreatingPathways is also saving small towns - helping buildsustainable, vibrant and competitive communitiesfor generations to come. To date, this project has been astoundingly suc-
cessful. Over 2,700 people and 160 advisors/fa-cilitators have participated in workshops, eventsand group training, 25 partnerships supportingrural development have been formed and dozensof families have taken part in one-on-one family consultations.
Creating Pathways has created two cornerstoneprograms to support the longevity of the programand consistently meet family business needs. Pass-ing the Torch is aimed at business owners and
Creating pathways for entrepreneurial familiestrusted advisors to strengthen their understanding and beginthe process of succession planning. The Trusted Advisor fo-cuses on providing professionals with in-depth understandingof unique issues facing family business owners and the family circle. As you may know, the RADF was created and funded with
$100 million by the Government of Alberta in 2007, with amandate to support innovative projects throughout the prov-ince that would contribute to strong, vibrant and sustainablecommunities. ABFI’s Creating Pathways for EntrepreneurialFamilies is a shining example of what RADF stands for: build-ing leaders of tomorrow and strengthening the communities

the market place out of that type setting. It’s a prod-uct that can be produced anywhere around Calgary and is also a product that can benet anyone in andaround Calgary,” said Baum.
“It is a local product and a product that obviously people in Strathmore would enjoy and would ndto be benecial to their lifestyle. It’s also to show
that there’s really neat, new and innovative prod-ucts coming out of rural settings, like Strathmore,(and) like Balzac.” said Baum
“We started the business because we knew that we could produce beef that was healthier and tast-ed better. We just didn’t know exactly how to goabout that,” said Lamb.
Lamb had read the book Steak, by Mark Schatz-ker, which was about his search around the globefor the best steak, which he found in slow grown, grass fed beef. The two women decided to emulatethat process. Lamb is a third generation rancher and her family’s business already had the capabil-ity and production means to be able to facilitate aproject like this.
“There is grass fed beef, obviously and thenthere’s commodity beef, but she thought of the ideaof, is there a way to produce a better tasting grass
fed product?” said Baum. The women explained that most beef bought in
stores is commodity beef and will at some point be sent to a feedlot. Lamb said all beef bought ingrocery stores would be nished at a feedlot andfed grain.
“It’s the grain that changes the fat prole in the beef, and changes the composition to more satu-rated fats, unhealthy fats,” said Lamb
Commodity beef is higher in saturated fat, whichis why a lot of people avoid red meat. When cattleare kept on grass their whole life the fatty acid pro-le is more favourable.
“Our beef is higher in fats that are good for you
like omega 3’s, omega 6’s, vitamin E, and lower infats linked to disease like heart attacks, and any other saturated-fat-related illness,” said Baum. The grass the cattle are fed is also monitored for
quality and composition. Lamb said it needs to behigh in alfalfa and the cattle only eat the top 40 per cent before heading to a new section to graze. The
top 40 per cent is the sweetest grass, and Lamb saidit is the highest in energy. Their cattle are all a minimum of nine months
to 12 months older than other grass feed beef, andat least nine months older than commodity beef,
which is what makes it a part of their slow-grownprocess, and what sets them apart from other grassfed producers and commodity producers.
“Where people will notice a difference in our grass fed beef versus other grass-fed beef is, we’re
working to produce a tastier product by the way we’ve changed our production. So there should bemore natural marbling and tenderness in our prod-uct than compared to other grass fed beef,” saidBaum. Tall Grass Beef Company in the U.S. have proven
the method, and the women have hired Dr. Allen Williams, Chief Operating Ofcer for Tall Grass
Beef, as their consultant.Lamb said with rising grain prices it makes sense
economically, not just health wise. The prices will be comparable with other beef, and the end prod-uct will be competitive with what can be boughtat stores.
Come October their product will be carried atCommunity Natural Foods in Calgary, and also di-rectly to the consumer through their website which
will allow the consumer to get to know the localproducers and familiarize themselves with the pro-cess. The women are also taking pre-orders at thistime. To nd out more, or to place an order, go to
www.bitebeef.com.

Break and enter
Sometime around noon on August 9, a residence in
Langdon, was broken into and items were stolen from
the residence.
Other Langdon residents reported seeing a small
dark blue Volkswagen car at the residence with two
Caucasian males described to be tall and skinny with
short, dark brown “buzz cut” hair believed to be in their
early 20’s.
Strathmore RCMP are seeking assistance from the
public in locating the individuals responsible.
If you have any information regarding this incident,
please contact the Strathmore RCMP at 403-934-3968
or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Boating incident update
On Sunday August 7, at approximately 11 a.m.,
a private dive contractor from the Edmonton area at-
tended Chestermere Lake and with the assistance of
the Chestermere RCMP boat patrol began the recovery
operations. This included utilizing a sonar system in the
area of the last sighting of the missing man. They were
unsuccessful in locating the missing presumed drown
male.
On Tuesday August 9, 2011, RCMP members from
the “E” Division (British Columbia) Underwater Recov-
ery Team attended Chestermere Lake to continue the
recovery operations. This team, at around 3 p.m. on Au-
gust 11, was successful in locating a deceased male.
After completely searching the originally dened area
where witnesses claim the missing person was to havegone down into the water, the search area was expand-
ed a few hundred yards north. The use of sonar was key
in locating the decreased man.
The deceased male recovered from Chestermere
Lake is conrmed to be Bondo Katumbay, a 33-year-old
citizen of the Democratic Republic of Congo residing in
Calgary. He was reported missing and presumed to have
drown on the evening of August 6, in Chestermere Lake.
Chestermere Victims Services have been actively as-
sisting the friends/family during this lengthy process.
The residents of Chestermere have been very support-
ive during this investigation showing their respect, com-
passion and generosity. This tragic incident hopefully
will serve as a reminder of the importance of using all
personal safety equipment while participating in water
sports.
Mischief in downtown core
On August 14, at approximately 2:40 a.m., Strath-
more RCMP were dispatched to a residence on Park
Lane Drive. The residence had suffered damage to a
decorative address sign in the front yard. Later that
morning at approximately 3:05 a.m., Strathmore RCMP
were dispatched to Centre Street and Park Wood Cres-
cent, where a stop sign was removed from the intersec-
tion and mail boxes tipped over. The stop sign for south
bound trafc on Centre Street and Park Lane Drive was
also removed. Strathmore RCMP are looking for the
assistance of anyone who may have seen something
suspicious in the area.
Lost rafters Located near carseLand
On August 13, at approximately 6:50 p.m., Strath-
more RCMP received a 911 dispatch regarding twoadult females who had been rafting on the Bow River
and had become lost. The two rafters reported they had
been on the river for approximately 6.5 hours after they
launched from a location near Mackenzie Town off of
Highway 22X, but had lost their bearings and did not
know where they were. The Calgary Police Service re-
ceived the initial 911 call, but lost phone connection
with the rafters.
When the lost rafters made a second 911 call, they
were connected with Wheatland 911 Call Centre and the
Strathmore RCMP were dispatched. Upon the request of
the Strathmore RCMP, the Strathmore Fire Department
assisted in the search efforts and launched their River
Rescue Craft. At approximately 9 p.m., members of the
Strathmore Fire Department Rescue Team located both
female rafters on the bank of the Bow River near McKin-
non Flats.
Both females who were from Calgary were located in
good health and transported to a location to be picked
up by family members.
The RCMP wish to remind all potential rafters and
boaters who plan such activities to always be aware of
their location, have a planned route, and destination or
exit point from the body of water they are on.
rcMp assist
On August 15, at approximately 10:22 p.m., Calgary
Police Service requested assistance from Chestermere
RCMP. A shooting had taken place in Calgary and the
suspect was being followed by the Calgary Police Ser-
vice HAWCS helicopter. The suspect attended a resi-
dence in Chestermere, where ofcers from Calgary Po-
lice Service, RCMP Chestermere, and RCMP Strathmore
staged outside. The suspect was taken into custodywithout incident. The suspect was turned over to Cal-
gary Police Service ofcers to continue their investiga-
tion.

One day a year, every year, Dairy Queen restaurants donate the pro-ceeds from Blizzard sales to Children’sMiracle Network Hospitals in their lo-cal area. Last year over $270,000 wasdonated to the Alberta Children’s Hos-pital, with the Strathmore locationraising over $6,000 for the cause. This year they have blown that number away, raising $10,300.
“I think it’s just a combination of ev-erybody’s excitement this year (that) just seemed to push it,” said DQ man-ager Rhonda Powell. The money came from a number of
different things the store had goingto help raise funds. There was wind-shield washing, face painting, build a bears, coin canisters, balloon sales and
of course Blizzard sales. The day will also leave another
memory with the staff - they lledtheir biggest order ever for AgriumInc. Carseland Nitrogen Operations.
“One of the ladies husbands worksthere, and he wanted to take one for (himself) and his little group of peo-ple wanted to get Blizzards, and it just went from there. So they all put inan order and there was 334 Blizzardsfrom them,” said Powell.
She said their faithful supporterssuch as Home Hardware and Co-opalso took part in the Miracle Treat Day,and other businesses also pre-ordered30 or more Blizzards but, the order from Agrium Inc. was denitely the biggest order they have ever had.
Even though it was raining, it didn’tdampen the spirits of the staff, andsome of them still went out and tried
to scrub windshields in the rain.Road construction in front of the lo-
cation was also scheduled for that af-ternoon, and after speaking to some-one on the construction crew, thecrew came rst thing in the morningand moved out of the way so the drivethru could remain open.
Mayor Steve Grajczyk and Chief Ad-ministrative Ofcer Dwight Stanford were among the rst volunteers help-ing make blizzards, which also includ-ed local reghters, EMT’s, RCMP andnumerous others. Though this was the most the Strath-
more location has raised on Miracle Treat Day, Powell said it has denitely set a precedent for next year.
“Every year we denitely try to al- ways improve our goal and try tooutdo ourselves from the year before,”said Powell.
Miracle Treat Day a success

Losing land and property damagedue to ooding is an issue many resi-dents of Nightingale have been facing.Residents Mike and Barb Froese came
to the Aug. 16 Wheatland County coun-cil meeting to ask for assistance. Their home has been ooded since April, andthey are concerned when winter hitstheir pipes and plumbing could freeze, creating even more problems. The bigquestion was why the developer didn’thave to raise the level of the property to try to prevent this from happening.Finding an out from the slough, whichis keeping the water surrounding theproperty, is a major concern for thecouple. The county will be sending theconcern to their insurance company for direction on how they will be ableto help. A resident in the county hasoffered to deliver ll to the couple’shome, which should help them create
the three foot berm they are hoping will help address the issues.
During the public hearing portionof the council meeting many residentsfrom Nightingale spoke on behalf of anew development that may come to thearea. While none said they object thepotential development, they are con-cerned about things being built right sothat new residents to the hamlet do notface the same problem. As a part of thearea structure plan, the issue of proper drainage and access to the newly devel-oped homes will be implemented as acondition.
County viCtim of fuel theft
Over the long weekend the county
was a victim of fuel theft. The perpe-trators got away with $7,703.89 worthof diesel fuel. There had been no signof anyone being at the location when workers returned on the Tuesday, butthe missing diesel was soon noticed.Fuel theft has become a problem all
over and different suggestions weremade to try to prevent it from happen-ing in the future. One of the sugges-tions by Councillor Alice Booth was toadd dye to the fuel, traces of which willremain in a vehicle’s tank for up to two years, giving the RCMP a way to try totrack the theft. Another suggestion was bringing the trucks back to the yard for the long weekend. The public worksdepartment will be looking into thesuggestions and trying to nd a solu-tion.
County to Cost share
roof repairs
Golden Hills School Division, GHSD,has asked Wheatland County to cost-
share the repairs to their roof. Theamount of the repairs is approximately $8,700 and GHSD is asking the county to pay $3,000 for an extended warranty on the repairs. Council has acceptedthe request and will be looking at in-creasing the monthly lease contract when it comes up by $50 a month, sothat the money spent will eventually bereplaced.
sidewalk work to begin soon
The contract for sidewalk work for Rosebud and Gleichen has been signed by Brooks Asphalt and Aggregate andis set to begin the second week of Sep-tember.

Water meter mishapContinued from page 17
Wheatland County was recently informed that a wa-ter meter in the Gleichen Arena had been bypassed.
A contractor had disconnected the meter in the zam- boni room after it had frozen in 2008. No record of
who authorized disconnecting the meter has beenfound. The mistake was caught by one of WheatlandCounty’s summer students. The student realized themeter was disconnected as they were replacing them
with new meters. Because of the mistake the county
lost approximately $630 in revenue. A motion waspassed by council to write a letter to the Gleichen Ag-ricultural Society stating the mistake, and informingthem they will now be billed for new readings fromthe new meter that was installed on July 21.

Girls in and around town will have a chance tostrut their stuff when the Dreamboat Dolls Natu-ral Pageant comes to Strathmore on Aug. 28.
Liz McKinnon, owner and director of WestCoastall Canadian Girls pageant, will be bringing thepageant to town.
“My daughter has been doing pageants in theStates since she was young and there wasn’t any up here in B.C, or in Canada really, that I knew of.So we just decided on a whim to start it and seeif it would y, and the response has been com-pletely overwhelming,” said McKinnon. The pageant will be kept semi-natural, so the
competitors will be able to wear a little make-upand dress up, but nothing extreme. She said ina natural pageant there is no make up and thedresses can be very plain, and she knows that thegirls have fun dressing up so she wanted to keepthat incorporated in a small way. There is no talent portion, but the girls can do
kind of runway modeling and cute turns and pos-es into it if they want. There also is no age limit, and McKinnon said the oldest girl signed up so far
is 20-years-old.In each community McKinnon and the Dream- boat Dolls pageant visits, she is requesting theparticipants bring an item to donate to the localfood bank.
“I just think its important for the girls to give back to the community as well because being ina pageant is a privilege and I don’t want them totake it for advantage,” said McKinnon.
“It does cost the moms $100 to put them in andI want them to also give back to the community
because there’s probably a lot of little girls outthere who would love to do it, but it’s just not inthe budget for their family. I just want them to ap-preciate what they’re doing.”
Registration for the pageant, which will takeplace at the Civic Centre, ends on Aug. 21. McKin-non said she has to know who will be compet-ing no later than then because she has to get theprizes ready.
“Every single girl goes home with a crown, ev-ery single girl goes home with prizes. Some willget a sash, but they all go home with a title they have been crowned with,” said McKinnon. To nd out more, or to register go to www.

August 12 kicked off the three day Alberta ZoneChampionships in Red Deer. Strathmore Reds AAA midget head coach Zane Anderson was the assis-tant coach for the Zone 2 team, which had local bantam ball player Logan Crooks on it. The team won the championship, bringing home the gold.
“We were not the number one seed going in so, it was sort of an upset which was nice. We were the
underdogs,” said Anderson.“We beat (the) Calgary Zone in the semi-nal. We
weren’t expected to win that, but we played really good, had good pitching. Then in the nal we weredown by three runs going into the last inning, and we scored four to win it, so it was pretty exciting.”
“It was good, the boys played well. It was therst time since 2005 when a lot of the old Strath-more Reds played on that team and won it, so it was a pretty big deal for them,” said Jim Crooks, who was there as a parent observer.
Crooks coaches the Reds AA bantam team, and was there to watch his son Logan play in the Cham-pionships. Logan played all over the place duringthe championships, pitching a few innings, playingrst base, even manning right eld.
“Logan played pretty good. I think he played
with the Strathmore bantam team all year so it wassort of a jump up in competition but he handled itpretty well I thought,” said Anderson.
“Logan enjoyed it thoroughly. When he got homehe realized he has to work on his hitting. There is agood chance he’s probably going to go to Arizonain December to a baseball camp down there for ve days,” said Crooks.
Crooks said it was a good tournament, and thatLogan met some new friends, and played somegood ball players.
“We had a pretty good group of kids, there wasno complaining about playing time, and everybody was a good teammate. (A) good team atmospherefor the Zone championship team,” said Anderson.
He said he thinks they are going to try to keepthe same coaching staff for next years Alberta’ssummer games, which Logan had been a part of
last summer and hopes to return to next year. One thing Anderson would like to see different
for next year would be more practices, but saidit can be tough for a team like the Zone 2 team.By the time all the teams are done with provincialchampionships the zones, or summer games arepretty much the next weekend. The season isn’t quite over yet for some ball
players. The selection process is just beginning for Team Alberta prospects that will compete in theProspect Series versus Manitoba and Saskatche- wan, in Swift Current, Saskatchewan Sept. 1 to 5. The top 20 players from the Zone Championships will be picked to be on the team. Anderson said heis one of the assistant coaches for the Team Alber-ta, and will also be a part of the selection process.

The Strathmore Magic Junior B Women’s Fast-pitch team took home the title of Provincial FastballChampion in late July, and now has one more titleto put under their belt - Western Canadian FastpitchChampion.
“We lost two games. We lost our second gameagainst Victoria, and against Saskatchewan 2 welost, but we ended up being in second place,” saidcoach Jim Songhurst of their round robin standing.
Being in second place gave them the chance togo for gold, and the determined team did just that.Songhurst said in junior B and senior B the top twoteams advance to the Westerns, which took placefrom Aug. 4 to 7. This was not the rst time the ju-nior B team has made it to Westerns, though it wasthe rst time they’ve won a gold medal.
“We’ve been to the Western Canadians now since2004, but this is the rst gold medal we’ve won. We’ve won bronze and silvers a few other times, but this is the rst time we’ve brought home the bigone,” said Songhurst.
“Obviously they just played super ball. There wasnever a time that they were out of any game. Wehad a couple of extra inning games that were really tough, there were some very good teams there,” saidcoach Ron Walmsley. Twice the team won an extra inning game by just
one run. Magic played the gold medal game againstPrince Albert, a team they had lost to before.
“Our girls were really on a high. They were thereto win and there was no fooling around, they didn’t want to go out. All they wanted to do was play ballfor four days,” said Walmsley.
Next year the team will move up to play senior B,and go into an even tougher category. Walmsley saidthere would still be the same coaching staff. Withthe girls moving into the senior B division thereleaves a gap to be lled by a new junior B team.
“We aren’t going to have one, we’re hoping there will be one but we won’t be coaching it,” said Walmsley.
“We’ve sort of recruited a couple of people, one of them is an ex-player of mine, and we’re hoping thatthey will put a junior B team together and play outof Strathmore as well. But that of course isn’t nal-ized yet, and it will probably be a while before it is.”

DUNLOP, Joan
November 2, 1943 - August 16, 2011
Peaceully, with her loving husband
o 47 years, Sonny, holding her
hand, Joan passed away at the Peter Lougheed Hospital
in Calgary at the age o 67 years ater a courageous battle
with Leukemia. Besides her husband, Joan (Mom) is
survived by her son Darin (Belinda) and their 3 children
Rebecca, Kirsten and Connor o Strathmore, A.B.; her
daughter Dawn (Mark) and their 3 sons Tom, Jack and
Mitchell o Salmon Arm, B.C.; her mother, Paula (Nanny);
and two brothers, Carl and Wayne. Mom was predeceased
by her ather, Ozzie Fisher. Mom was born on a arm east
o Winnipeg in Hazelridge, M.B. and this is where she met
her husband and partner or lie Sonny (Dad). Their early
years together were spent going to “ball tournaments” to
watch Dad play. Mom graduated rom teachers college
in 1963 and married Dad in 1964. She taught school
(grade 1) until 1967 when she took 10 years o to raise
us (Darin & Dawn). In 1973 Mom & Dad bought the arm in
Lockport, M.B. where they armed grain and cattle or the
next 24 years. In 1977 Mom resumed teaching grade 1 at
St. Andrews School. At the same time she went back to
University part-time and earned her Bachelor o Education
rom the University o Winnipeg. Teaching was a passion
or Mom and there were many nights we listened to
Mom tell her “grade 1 stories” at the dinner table or
what seemed like hours. Mom and Dad sold the arm in
1997 and built their “dream house” near the Red Riverin Lockport, M.B. In 2000 Mom retired ater 26 years o
teaching. The next ew years were spent living the “retired
lie” going on trips (cruises) and camping and skiing with
their group o riends “the butter-brickle gang”. Mom was
the “consummate Mom” and spent a lot o her time in the
kitchen, whether it was getting lunches ready or us in
the feld, making Sunday supper including raisin pie or
her Dad, or just baking. Although she spent a lot o her
time in the kitchen she always ound time to attend all o
our hockey, fgure skating, and baseball events, usually
with a lot o our riends in tow. In 2006 Mom and Dad
moved out to Strathmore, A.B. Mom quickly developed
a very close and special group o riends in Strathmore.
Mom spent the last 5 years with us and our amilies doing
what she, and we, loved; whether it was reading to the
grand-kids, watching them in sports, or baking with them
to fll “Grandma’s Cookie Jar”. These last 5 years were
precious to Mom, Dad and us, and specifcally the last
4 months o Mom’s lie were very special as it provided
Mom, Dad, us, and the grandkids the time to expresseelings and thoughts that needed to be expressed. Mom
will be dearly missed and not a day will go by that we won’t
remember her strength, special qualities, gentleness and
the love we had or Joan, “Cootie”, Mom, and Grandma.
Our amily would like to thank the Hematology sta at
the Peter Lougheed Hospital, in particular Dr. Lategan, or
their wonderul care. A Celebration o Mom’s lie will be
held Saturday, August 20, 2011 at Lord o All Lutheran
Church (112 Lakeside Boulevard, Strathmore) at 11:00
a.m. Donations in Joan’s memory may be made directly
to On Eagle’s Wings Ecumenical Ministries Inc. (10072
