WHY PRAY?

The “foreigners” as Isaiah calls them, the “Gen les” as Paul calls them, or the “Canaanites” as Ma hew calls them are called to worship the one true God in prayer. As we listen to today’s readings, perhaps we are tempted to ask: Why pray? The ques on is rhetorical; it is tantamount to asking why friends should talk to one another or people in love kiss one another. Prayer is a way of rela ng to God, a way of talking to God. The apostles had the opportunity to talk to Jesus in the flesh. We could talk to Jesus Christ in prayer. Our rela onship with him must be enthusias c; it cannot be faint-hearted. John Donne, a fi eenth-century poet, knew what the quali es of good prayer were. Donne asks God to treat him differently from most Chris ans. The poet does not want God to merely “knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend,” but also to “break, blow, burn, and make me new” (Holy Sonnets, XIV). It takes a dynamic faith on our part to come to God in prayer. As Jesus once said, “Knock and the door will be opened to you” (Ma hew 7:7). It may take pounding the door down, but if we are as persistent as the woman in today’s Gospel, the results will follow. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GRATITUDE

O Thou who has given us so much, mercifully grant us one thing more—a grateful heart. —George Herbert

GOOD EXAMPLE

A faithful Chris an, illumined by the rays of grace like a crystal, ought to illumine his neighbor with the light of good ex-ample, through word and deed. —St. Anthony

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Reflec ons with the Word of God from the priests of St. Cecilia Parish August 16 – 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Faith the size of a mustard seed can move a mountain. Yet, there are mes when faith the size of a mountain is needed to move just a single seed.

Read today’s Gospel: Ma hew 15:21-28

A mom who lives in a territory where paganism is prac ced has a daughter who is tormented by a demon. She hears Jesus is near-by and immediately believes he will cure her. The disciples try to dismiss her, yet unlike the Israelites, she insists Jesus is God, speaks clearly, simply and takes no offense on being humiliated when compared to a dog who eats scraps off the master’s table. Did she realize her faith was the size of a mountain or was she caught in serious despera on for her child’s plight?

Jesus denies her request saying his ministry is limited to the Israelites, however, he is in (present day) Lebanon outside of Galilee. Jesus retreated there with the apostles to con nue teaching while escaping persecu on from Herod and Jewish authori es. There-fore, he is the foreigner.

So, she stands her ground before the true God and engages him un l he grants the prayer. On the surface it looks like Jesus is re-buking her, however he joins her deepest maternal desire and prayerful persistence to his immediate power in exorcising the de-moniac. Her mountain size faith moved the seed (the Word) of Jesus: “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish!” Reflect with wonder if Jesus saw within this loving mom’s persistent prayer a willingness to take up her cross which he too would do on his way to a humilia ng crucifixion and a glorious resurrec on. Also, her possessed daughter’s situa on became the founda on for their discipleship! The mom found Jesus at the right place at the right me because Providence is always at work, so seek Jesus especially in the Eucharist with everything within you. Ask, as a disciple, who needs my persistent prayers for deliver-ance from evil today? Our concerns are His concerns; let us experience the joy of praying persistently while remaining in trus ul bliss. Blessings!

¡Bendiciones!

Aug. 15, 2020—O immaculate virgin, mother of God and mother of humanity, we believe with all the fervour of our faith in your triumphal assump on both in body and in soul into heaven where you are acclaimed as queen by all the choirs of angels and all the legions of saints; we unite with them to praise and bless the Lord who has exalted you above all other pure creatures and to offer you the tribute of our devo on and our love. We know that your gaze, which on earth watched over the humble and suffering humanity of Jesus, in heaven is filled with the vision of that humanity glorified and with the vision of uncreated wisdom, and that the joy of your soul in the direct contempla on of the adora-ble trinity causes your heart to throb with overwhelming tenderness; and we, poor sinners whose body weights down the flight of the soul, beg you to purify our hearts so that, while we remain below, we may learn to see God and God alone in the beau es of his creatures. We trust that your merciful eyes may deign to gaze down upon our miseries and anguish, upon our struggles and our weaknesses; that your countenance may smile upon our joys and our victories; that you may hear the voice of Jesus saying to you of each one of us, as he once said to you of his beloved disciple: "Behold you son," and we who call upon you as our mother, we, like John, take you as the guide, strength and consola on of our mortal life. We are inspired by the certainty that your eyes, which wept over the earth crimsoned by the blood of Jesus, are yet turned toward this world racked by wars and persecu ons, the oppression of the just and the weak. From the shadows of this vale of tears, we seek in your heavenly assis-tance, tender mercy, comfort for our aching hearts, and help in the trials of Church and country. We believe finally that in the glory where you reign, clothed with the sun and crowned with stars, you are, a er Jesus, the joy and gladness of all the angels and the saints, and from this earth, over which we tread as pilgrims, comforted by our faith in the future resurrec on, we look to you our life, our sweetness, our hope; draw us onward with the sweetness of your voice, so that one day, a er our exile, you may show us Jesus, the blessed fruit of your womb. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.
