Vocation Thoughts - August 1, 2010 ―One's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.‖
If simplicity of life and the evangelical counsels of poverty,
chastity and obedience especially attract you, discover that life
as a priest, deacon, sister or brother. Speak with a priest or
religious or contact the Vocation Office at 718-827-2454 or
[email protected]. Think about it, pray over it, and con-
tact Deacon Fred in the Religious Education Office (718) 253-
8840, [email protected]. The rewards are heavenly!

Summer Mission Appeal Next weekend We are happy to announce that our annual Summer
Mission Appeal will take place on the weekend of
August 7 & 8. As you know, the parishes of the diocese
welcome a visiting missionary once a year through a
―Cooperative‖ program where we learn a bit about the
work being done in some other part of the world, and
through your generosity, have the opportunity to support
that work. We will welcome Fr. Dominic Nyamai Mun-
ini of the diocese of Machakos in Kenya, East Africa.
Father will speak at all the masses that weekend and we
will have a special collection to support his diocese.
Please be generous.

Reflection on the Sunday Gospel EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY
Rich in God's sight (Luke 12:13-21) Today’s Gospel speaks to our instinctive tendencies and concerns, in order to put its on guard against
them: ―Take heed, and beware of all covetousness; for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his
possessions.‖
Following his usual catechetical approach, Jesus is not content with this abstract warning but brings it
home to his hearers with the help of the parable of the rich man who piles up possessions against the future,
driven by a concern that is familiar to every generation: ―Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years;
take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.‖
If, in Jesus’ eyes, riches are suspect, the same is already true of the Old Testament. The latter
undoubtedly does regard wealth as a sign of God’s blessing. Thus the patriarchs were wealthy (Gen. 13:2;
26:12; 30:43). Deuteronomy shows us God concerned for the prosperity of his people (Dent. 8:7-10; 28:1-12).
Abundance goes with uprightness of life (Ps. 37:19).
At the same time, however, the Old Testament is also conscious of the dangers that accompany wealth;
evidence of this attitude is especially to be found in the Wisdom literature. ―Blessed is the rich man who is
found b1ameless, and who does not go after gold‖ (Sir. 31:8); ―Let not the rich man glory in his riches‖ (Jer.
10:23). Wealth is, then, a gift of God, but it must be handled carefully, and it never becomes an unqualified
good nor the most important of blessings. Wisdom must be preferred to it (1 Kings 3:11; Job 28:15-19; Wis.
7:8-11; Prov. 2:4; 3:15; 8:11). Moreover, it is difficult to remain faithful in time of prosperity, for an easy life
tends to blunt the heart’s sensitivity (Deut. 31:20; Ps. 73:4-9). In the Book of Isaiah we even find riches being
cursed: ―Woe to those who join house to house, who add field to field‖ (5:8). The prophet here anticipates the
―Woe to you that are rich‖ of the Gospel (Luke 6:24).
Jesus adopts the same perspective in the parable of today’s Gospel: wealth may not be intrinsically
evil, but it does make it difficult to lead a life centered on the reign of God.
Centering Prayer: ―Be still and see That I am God‖ the
Book of Psalms says. This method of silent prayer offers a way
to ―be still.‖ You can try it out with a group that meets on
Mondays at 7:30 PM in the Rectory.
PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE We offer Professional Counseling at St. Columba’s Rectory.
Dr. Stephen Misuraca, a licensed psychologist has offered to work with
any of our parishioners (adults, children, couples) in need of his ser-
vices; and to offer his professional assistance to our parish staff. If you
are in need of his services, please call: 718-641-1307. He accepts most
insurance.
PLEASE PRAY FOR VOCATIONS Q: How do I Become (or grow as)
a Catholic?
A: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
(The R.C.I.A. Program) -- a special program established by the Church to
help lead people closer to Christ. How do I know if this program
is for me? Ask yourself . . .
Do you, or someone you know, want to become a Catholic?
Have you been worshipping with us, but never officially took
the steps to become Catholic?
Have you been away from the church and have now returned,
but you want to know more?
Have you been a Catholic all your life, but never celebrated
all the sacraments of initiation, including Eucharist, and
Confirmation?
Have you joined us from a different religious background
and would like to find out more about the Catholic Church?
If you answer ―YES‖ to any of the above questions, we want to
help you on your journey. Or if you know anyone who could
answer ―YES‖ to any of these questions, we would like to invite
them. If so, please contact us with a name, address and phone
number. For more information please contact:
Fr. Hughes, Pastor, or
Deacon Larry Coyle, RCIA coordinator.
Liturgy Bits and Bytes -- Communion Song During communion a song is sung. This should be easy or
repetitive or familiar enough to not require using the song-
books. The song is to emphasize the unity (communion) of the
people with one another as well as with Christ. The text should
be one which highlights that aspect of relationship. Communion
time is procession time and for that reason a time for music. It
can be somewhat difficult to sing, walk, follow ushers' instruc-
tions, and find your way back to the right pew again. Many par-
ishes try to solve this problem by choosing songs with a refrain
that is easily learned by heart. Sometimes the song leader or
music group will sing the verses for that very reason. Refrains
that are straightforward, and yet memorable, are preferred.
Because our communion is with one another as well as with
Jesus Christ, singing together is an important part of expressing
our togetherness. Music for communion need not be slow to be
appropriate. Reverent does not necessarily mean slow. Not only
songs which speak of bread and wine are appropriate. Songs
which speak of our relationship and responsibility to one another
because of our interrelatedness in Jesus Christ speak of the true
meaning of communion. Remember that this sacrament was
instituted in the context of service. Jesus washed the apostles'
feet. Song is appropriate to the action and meaning at this time.
So ask yourself: "How well am I doing in contributing my voice
to the worship of the gathered community?"
