P ackaging is one of the fastest growing segments of the printing industry. So, even if printed material in the form of newspapers, periodicals and books is decreasing moderately, the size of packaging market is growing

phenomenally. This is due to myriad reasons. The purchasing power of middle-class segment is growing. The food industry is getting organised, with many players venturing into packed food segment. Besides, the online retail stores have opened up new avenues for packaging. Each product sold at these retail outlets has not just the original packaging but also an outer packaging, which has to endure the wear and tear of transport and in case, the product is returned, it has to be strong enough to reach the sender.

All forms of packaging – flexible, container, tetrapack, corrugated, etc are growing. Hence, a lot of offset printers are now venturing into packaging and there has been substantial investment in this field. On the other hand, many new machines are now available in this segment, with automated processes and stringent quality measures.

This has also opened up new avenues for security printing as organised players look for security features in their packaging. The recent PackPlus exhibition and conclave in New Delhi focused on the future of packaging. And another show Pack Print International in Bangkok is just on the cards.

But, this is not all…there was a recent report in US, which says that print is going to make a comeback in a big way. People have realised the power of print as this is something which is tangible and can be passed from one hand to another. Gone are the days when we received printed New Year greetings, which sat pretty on our desks for months on end. That personal touch is missing. Online greetings can never get this kind of admiration as compared to a printed product.

The industry thus seems to be rejuvenating. It is time to understand your core competencies and focus on the same.

The print is here to stay and the world will continue to love print.

Printing Industries of America has announced the recipients of the 2015 InterTech Technology

Awards. An independent panel of judges deliberated over an outstanding selection of technology nominations which highlighted the dynamic nature of the industry. This year’s InterTech Technology Awards show great developments in high speed web and sheetfed colour inkjet presses, digital finishing equipment, the use of metallic foil, patterning for optimal flexo ink laydown, and a portable spectrophotometer for use in the pressroom. Also honored were solutions that facilitate cross-media marketing campaigns, use a new standard to define and communicate brand colours, and simplify the integration of production and business processes. The ten technologies selected to receive the 2015 InterTech Technology Awards are:

Océ VarioPrint i300 from Canon USA, Inc: The Océ VarioPrint i300 is a colour sheetfed inkjet press that bridges the gap between the flexibility and efficiency of toner-

based sheetfed presses and the economy and productivity of web-fed inkjet systems. It can cost effectively run both monochrome and colour jobs up to a B3 format at a top speed of 294 letter images per minute. Its print heads produce 600 x 600 dpi, achieving a perceived 1200 dpi with drop size modulation. The judges singled out the Océ VarioPrint i300 as a technology that will have a significant impact on the industry by opening up inkjet to the cut sheet market.

ORIS CxF from CGS Publishing Technologies International LLC:

ORIS CxF is one of the first commercial implementations of the ISO standard that established the Color Data Exchange Format (CxF/X) for spot colour characterisation data. After measurements are taken of a brand

colour, users can convert the data to CxF/X4 data, and then export it to a PDF/X file, tagging it with colour definitions and sequence instructions. The ORIS CxF

EFI DirectSmile Cross Media from Electronics for Imaging, Inc: EFI DirectSmile Cross Media is a solution to the growing demand for effective cross-

media communications. It is a fully featured solution that automates the process of executing cross-media campaigns, including sending out mass and individually triggered emails and messages, pushing messages to social media, personalising print communications, and tracking results. EFI has also streamlined the integration with third-party CRM solutions such as Salesforce.com. One judge commented, “For years printers have been removed from marketing campaign conversations. DirectSmile credentials them in a way that goes beyond the trade and repositions them as valuable partners.”

Automation Engine Connect from Esko: The complex task of getting third-party software (MIS, shipping, Web storefronts, finance, etc.) to automatically and correctly exchange information with

production systems just became easier with Automation Engine Connect. It allows all order information – for example, pricing, quantities, production-related info, and costing – to move to and from systems through the Esko interface. One judge commented, “Integrating the prepress workflow with internal and external business systems enables packaging artwork to be delivered just in time. Esko’s solution lowers the IT hurdle to make different systems communicate with automation engine.”

Prinect Media Manager from Heidelberg:Heidelberg’s Prinect Media Manager is a browser-based, multi-channel media publishing tool that merges content creation, project m a n a g e m e n t , databasing, and e - c o m m e r c e , helping to keep marketing messages consistent and timely across all channels. The clever “mind-mapping” interface coordinates the work of everyone connected with a particular job. Media data is stored in a central database, linked logically, managed centrally, and made available to all applications. The judges admired the proactive manner in which resources and content were managed, recognising that technologies like these help printing companies transform themselves from conventional service providers into partners able to manage content for their customers’ communication needs.

Highcon Euclid Digital Finishing Technology from Highcon Systems Ltd: Highcon’s Digital Finishing Technology brings the advantages of digital technology to

by Highcon’s Digital Adhesive Rule Technology (DART). Data is sent to the DART canister, which releases resin in the form of rules that, once cured, produce hard

raised lines. Cutting, perforation, or etching is done by an array of high-powered CO2 lasers. The Euclid technology handles up to 1,500 B1-sized sheets per hour. The judges noted that the dramatic improvement in turnaround time for small to medium converting runs could be enough by itself to justify the technology’s use.

KODAK PROSPER 6000 Presses from Kodak: The KODAK PROSPER 6000 Presses use Kodak’s continuous

whites, enhance overprints and reverse print, achieve better spot colour printing, and deliver smooth highlight transitions. One aspect of the technology pairs precisely imaged plate surface patterns with anilox volume to improve ink transfer and enables greater colour density and opacity with a lower volume of ink. The technology further raises the print quality of flexo, noted the judges, giving printers the ability to compete with the best that gravure printing has to offer.

MGI iFOIL from MGI Digital Technology:The MGI iFOIL is an in-line complement to the company’s JETvarnish 3D UV spot coater (a previous InterTech Award recipient). With an innovative digital process, iFOIL makes embossing and hot foiling easy, requiring no plates, no dies, and no makeready. This allows users to

produce hot foil stamping and embossing jobs from one to thousands of sheets on the fly. The iFOIL can utilise many different types of available market foils in a variety of colours, metallic tones, reflective patterns, and holographic effects. One judge said, “The digital era in package converting has started, and the benefits of iFOIL are clearly apparent.”

X-Rite eXact with Scan Option from X-Rite: The handheld X-Rite eXact spectrophotometer with Scan Option enables printers and packaging converters to control, manage, and communicate colour across the entire colour workflow. The inventive Scan Option lets users rapidly scan colour patches without the use of a track, especially beneficial in packaging work where colour

targets can be hard to access. “The ability to scan multiple colour bars in one pass is an incredible advantage,” said a judge. eXact also supports all measurements specified in the latest ISO standards, allowing for predictable results when optical brightening agents and fluorescent materials are involved.The InterTech stars, recognised as a symbol of technological innovation and excellence, will be presented before an audience of industry leaders during the 2015 Printing Industries of America Premier Print Awards Gala Featuring the InterTech Technology Awards and the Product of Excellence Awards on September 13 in Chicago, Illinois.

inkjet technology to produce high quality commercial print products at speeds up to 1,000 feet per minute. New driers, interstation drying, and nano-technology ink let the presses overcome a key inkjet limitation—the ability to print glossy and other coated stock with heavy coverage at fast speeds. Equally innovative is Kodak’s Intelligent Print System that monitors thousands of inputs and adjusts on the fly to maintain registration and colour quality. One judge summed up the panel’s reaction, “The speed and quality are impressive, and the coated samples really got our attention.”

Brand new perspectives in packaging print

Thanks to impressive print packaging, brands can seduce customers into a change of purchasing vote at the

point of purchase, says Superbrands founder Marcel Knobil. “We would end up with less brand and more bland were it not for the attention that the packaging attracts.” Superbrands is acclaimed worldwide as being an independent authority and arbiter of branding excellence, committed to paying tribute to exceptional brands and promoting the discipline of branding.The impact of a winning combination of text and graphics extends way beyond fronting up that initial beauty parade. As well as being the ‘eye candy’ that hooks the consumer in the first instance, a perfectly reproduced external image provides consumers with an often subliminal product recognition and reassurance that can be the brand owner’s banker in a congested retail space. Today’s packaging trends are driven by longer supermarket opening hours, continually enhanced print technologies and capabilities and demand to protect brands and increase recognition. Not only surviving but attaining the status as the preferred choice under such highly testing conditions is one half of the brand owner’s greatest challenge. The other is to meet it at an affordable cost.

“We do this by adding greater functionality which meets the go-to-market and quality needs of CPG (consumer packaged goods) businesses and retailers. We also make it possible for the brand owner to ensure that the flow of data is secure and transparent, mistakes and errors can be picked up early or avoided altogether and the net result is to get products to market faster.”Similarly web-based colour management systems can extend the same degree of comfort and control to brand owners over how pre-determined colour parameters are then replicated accurately irrespective of substrate or supplier, ensuring a guaranteed consistency of colour reproduction that underpins brand authenticity and integrity. cost-efficient shorter run-lengths, for example Heidelberg’s Speedmaster Prinect Inpress Control inline automated turbo charged system which can change plates between jobs within ten minutes.

Digital mindsetWhat has sparked these improvements in analogue press technology is the increasingly potent challenge posed by digital print; not least in meeting brand owner requirements for cost-efficient shorter run lengths – and thereby, lower inventory levels – and the ability to differentiate products on-shelf through customisation. Whilst affordably utilising variable data has always been part and parcel of the digital print proposition, it’s now clearly on the retail marketing radar following its successful adoption by high-profile retail marketing campaigns run by Coca Cola, Heineken, Nutella and a steadily growing band of global blue-chip brands. “To take our brand off the packaging and replace it with something other than the Coca Cola script wasn’t easy to do within a structure like ours, where we operate according to very tight brand guidelines to protecting it,” says Greg Bentley, packaging innovator, Coca Cola. “The digital print capability enabled it to happen, but the marketing campaign is the really smart thing.”

“The combination of technological muscle and marketing inspiration is what it takes to make customisation fly,” says Paul Randall, brands business development manager, HP Worldwide.

“It’s breaking away from the mindset of packaging being the static bearer of logos and ingredients tables and using it as a media opportunity for consumer engagement to the benefit of the brand. The media landscape has changed. It is becoming increasingly fragmented between above the line spend (bought media), PR and below the line (earned media), and packaging (owned media) – with the latter two increasingly linked together. Not surprisingly, brand owners are now regular visitors to HP’s Graphics Experience Centre in Barcelona.” Likewise Xeikon’s technology centre in Antwerp. “For brand owners attending our Xeikon Café programme, it’s a two-track learning curve,” says Filip Weymans, marketing director, Labels & Packaging. “First, understanding how the benefits of digital production can be translated into diversifying communication towards the audience they’re reaching out to and second, how the technology can address needs within their business model - notably, being faster to market and making better use of working capital.” “While the adoption of digital is an accelerating trend, despite the buzz being created it’s still under-selling its potential,” says Doug Hutt, global packaging manager, SAB Miller. “The top ten brand owners in the world are generating over a quarter of a trillion dollars in sales. If just 10 - 20 percent of these were digitised with the balance going to analogue, that is still a very large potential revenue that converters haven’t yet grasped.”

“FMCG companies should be more proactive in going out and talking to the packaging industry – and the packaging industry should be addressing those issues and coming up with solutions,” says Doug Hutt, SAB Miller global packaging manager.

Meanwhile, faster-running inkjet technology looks poised to dictate the next chapter in the digital packaging print story, not least via the keenly anticipated commercialisation of digital guru Benny Landa’s ‘nanographic’ presses engineered to deliver variable data printed material at offset speeds.

The finishing touchCustomisation is not the only route to catching the consumer’s eye on-shelf. Short-run, cost-effective special effects such as high gloss, glitter, metallic w i t h o u t r e c o u r s e to hot-foil stamping and even Braille are also within the remit of next-generation d i g i t a l p o s t - p r e s s e n h a n c e m e n t technology now e s t a b l i s h i n g itself within the finishing sector. Also providing a more cost-effective means of achieving greater stand-out is the take-up of cold foiling using the analogue process - notably as an alternative to laminated / metallised substrates for labels and cartons.Meanwhile, at the higher end of the scale is the arresting 3D effect achieved through the use of Fresnel lens technology providing instant ‘stand-out’ in retail duty-free for cartons containing the global gin brand Bombay Sapphire.

“It’s obviously more expensive than a normal foil by about one-third, but you do get significantly greater impact. If you want something that is undeniably eye-catching and alluring then that’s what it takes,” says Dominic Burke, managing director, Webb deVlam UK.

The new frontier “The adoption of online-oriented technologies is pointing the way towards next generation applications aimed at facilitating greater engagement between brand and consumer,” says Sun Branding Solutions Packaging Technology director, Gillian Garside-Wight. “Who would have thought that the Apple watch would be available five years ago? Brand owners need to deliver what consumers want including smarter packs that integrate with a digitally driven smarter life-style.” Quite a number of applications on the market bring into play mobile technology. For example, on-pack augmented reality (AR) applications pioneered by Blippar

that allow users to simply look at an object through the camera on their smartphone to activate an instantaneous digital search and draw down information from the web. In a recent campaign for Perrier, the invitation to consumers to shake their phone like a cocktail shaker to reveal a recipe was a typically innovative way to highlight the overall concept and add fun by using the technology to unique advantage.Rather than position an icon on-pack to facilitate interaction, UK-based prepress specialist Reproflex3’s proprietary ‘PackLinc’ scanning technology embeds a hidden code within the ink itself, enabling the consumer to effectively treat the entire pack as a portal. Most recently applied within a limited edition run of the children’s POM-BEAR crisp packet, the system was the recipient of EFIA (European Flexographic Industry Association) and the prestigious Starpack gold awards last year. Debbie Waldron-Hoines, EFIA director says, “Brand owners need a deeper understanding of the processes so that they can help make considered decisions on what is best suited for their brand. Both flexo and digital can work wonderfully together to enhance the brand.” Underpinning product security and thereby underpinning brand integrity is another obvious avenue being explored by smart technologies. A fully printed near-field communication sensor tag (NFC) developed by Thin Film Electronics for Diageo’s Johnnie Walker whisky doubles as a security and anti-counterfeiting device as well as interacting with smartphones to dispense product advice and information.As a lot of the labelling and pre-printed information currently required to be displayed on-pack is gradually phased out, just imagine the potential for branding

afforded by that freed-up real estate. Brands are currently getting maybe only 40 percent of the pack’s surface for its primary purpose. However, if one small interactive barcode resolves all the regulatory and legal requirements 90 percent of the print surface could be released for marketing the product.“Ironically, the most practical bridge linking brand and consumer might simply entail upgrading the humble linear barcode into a 2D format,” says Domino Printing Sciences global account manager, Craig Stobie. “Brand owners are yet to fully realise the potential in having a machine-readable code that not only contains a lot more data but with the same footprint or smaller than a human-readable, but can also actually be cheaper.”

Print & Publishing Aug-Sep 2015 Career“Whether it be products that communicate with your tablet or temperature or time sensitive thermochromic inks that indicate when your lager is perfectly chilled or provide the re-assurance that pre-packaged meat is safe to eat, the facility for interactivity ticks all the right boxes for forward-looking brand owners,” says Eef de Ferrante, managing director of the Active & Intelligent Packaging Industry Association (AIPIA).

“Brand owners need to meet the challenges faced by counterfeiting, product security in the supply chain, consumer engagement and ‘Big Data’ management. Brand protection and better marketing of their products are major starting points towards averting potential reputational damage and simply saving money.”Eye-catching and innovative printed packaging is a shrewd investment towards building a loyal and enduring customer-base, concludes Des King. Whilst consumers are exercising greater versatility than ever before in choosing how and where they are able to gather information through which to determine product preferences, packaging offers the brand owner a uniquely guaranteed opportunity to control how they communicate with prospective customers face to face in-store at the very point of purchase. No surprise then that the ways in which the package is printed will occupy centre-stage at drupa 2016.

What to expect at drupa?Printed packaging is the key mechanism enabling brand owners to build expanding and

enduring customer loyalty in order to out-sell and out-perform their competition. Changing patterns of communication have elevated the role of packaging from protective wrapper to front-line sales & marketing tool. In a media-neutral environment it’s a function that is increasingly

London Digital Book Printing Forum presented the results of market analysis from previous years that show how the market opinion changes. domains. “In the eco-solvent domain, we have perceived the success of our five feet printer; but in response to the rapidly maturing market we introduce 10 ft Pixeljet ECO 3202,” mentions TP Jain, managing director, Monotech Systems Limited. Of the new attractions at the company’s stand was PixelJet Desktop UV printer designed for gifts, tabletop items. PackPlus 2015 records a good show!Packaging exhibition PackPlus 2015 was successfully held from July 30-August 2, 2015 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. A report.

PackPlus is one of the well-known packaging exhibitions in the country and there was record turnout in

its 2015 edition. By the time the four-day exhibition drew to a close on August 2, the busy staff at the thronging registration counters did hand out the 13,608th visitor’s badge. The portends were visible early as the pre-registrations on the website had outstripped all previous records by some margins.This show also set PackPlus firmly on the growth path. After the aborted attempt to create a new home for the event away from Pragati Maidan for three editions, the exhibition had returned to its traditional venue and instantly started to grow. This year’s edition was 30 percent larger than the previous year and the re-bookings point to a bumper event going forward.“The exhibitors signing up during the ongoing event itself with increased areas for next edition is an indication that we are heading towards a big growth,” said an elated Neetu Arora, director, Print-Packaging.com (P) Limited, the organisers of the event. Although packaging is a very mature industry, it too thrives and grows through a constant influx of

This latest Converflex was no exception, and Bobst Italia had the pleasure of welcoming over 60 converters during the two days of the Open House.On its Converflex stand, BOBST treated visitors to a first taste of things to come at

The printing demonstration was built around showing guests the efficiency, and the resulting

output quality, of the systems and equipment the press is equipped with - most notably its integrated washing system and its Twin Trolley. The demonstration also gave visitors the opportunity to compare print samples taken from the machine at different stages of the run, that is, before and after the colour changes. The samples were then compared using a spectrophotometer, which registered a low “Delta E”, demonstrating the absence of contamination in the colours subsequent to wash-up. The use of the Twin Trolley system highlighted the flexibility it provides in terms of fast job preparation and ink logistics, as well as the savings that can be made by a reduction in both ink use and solvent waste. After seeing the performance of the equipment dedicated to gravure printing, visitors moved to the CL 850D duplex laminator equipped with a flexo trolley. As the quality of BOBST flexo trolley is acknowledged, especially for its performance in coating solvent-based adhesives onto thin aluminium foil, visitors were able to check the perfect quality of the output: a two-layer composite material made up of 7 micron aluminium foil and 12 micron PET.Over 200 Rotomec 4003MP gravure printing presses are installed world-wide, whilst the CL 850 laminator has a firmly consolidated position in the class of high performance equipment with advanced technology and automation, holding the largest market share in the two major markets of Italy and Germany.

Esko, the leading software and hardware provider to the packaging, signage

and POS-POP supply chain in India, is committed to helping train packaging specialists. Recognising this need, it recently equipped the Government Institute of Printing Technology (GIPT) in Mumbai with fifteen software licenses of ArtiosCAD 3D modeling and structural design tools, DeskPack and Flexo Tools. Esko signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with GIPT and provided these packaging prepress software licenses free of cost. Subsequent to the installation in GIPT’s prepress classroom, Esko application engineer Prashant Kamat, conducted a training programme on ArtiosCAD 3D modeling and layout tools consisting of six hours daily for a full week. A follow up training programme for prepress essentials and flexo tools was conducted in May 2015. GIPT’s principal, Dr Hemant P Taskar said, “We are extremely grateful to Esko for showing confidence in our institute and particularly to Esko’s team members for their overwhelming support.” Srihari Rao, director of sales, Esko for India said, “Our agreement with the GIPT is a necessary part of our ongoing assistance to educational and training institutions. Tagging along the trends slipping into the industry through times, the course structure of BTech in Printing

& Packaging offered by the Printing & Publication Department of Kurukshetra University is duly designed to nurture students in propounding knowledge and aspects of the current printing industry, with special study on packaging printing. “In addition to studies on technical and machinery know-how, contents of our curriculum exclusively cover a vast aspect of printing, such as role of graphics,” mentions Moninder. He points out as a matter of reality that the present growth in the industry is

rather inclined more upon the packaging domain. As of now, the department offers just one main course; but the plans have been laid down to introduce higher courses, such as MTech and PhD, in near future or probably right from the next academic session. In the current batch of the department’s BTech programme, there are 60 students, out of which 20 are girls. Number of girl students in the department keeps increasing in every new academic session. “There were barely 40 students in the previous batch; this year, we have 60 with straight away increase of 50 percent,” shares Moninder, adding, “Around

a few years back the number of girl students in the department was countable on finger tips—let’s say around two or three in every batch.” When enquired about the reason behind the increasing interest among girls in pursuing printing courses, Moninder attributes it to marvels of ultra-modern machineries and technologies swelling in the current market. “The old notion of judging printing as a labour-

oriented job has long been discarded. This industry has now transformed into more of a computerised world; automations have brought drastic changes to traditional norms, giving everything painstakingly a cleaner environment. Such transition is one of the big reasons of the industry attracting female professionals,” he explains, adding that even parents nowadays consider choosing printing as career option for their kids. “We organise seminars and workshops at regular intervals, inviting industry experts, at the department,” mentions Moninder. He says such interactive events help students know what is trending or happening in the industry. The seminars are very much a part of the curriculums. Students at the department take part in at least one seminar in every semester of their BTech programme. In this respect, Moninder advises students rather to be involved in field visits than confining only in the classroom to experience live running of machines and production procedures. In order to provide the students the applied knowledge, the department has set up a lab equipped with two single-colour offset machines; two treadle presses; five wire stitching and six thread sewing machines; two cutters; three rulers and many others. “In addition to our portfolio of traditional machines and post-press equipments, we have two digital presses—Xerox 7020 and Riso EZ 570,” says Moninder. He adds that nothing is meant to be running or operating alone nowadays; offset presses

have limitation when it comes to short-run production, so here we provide room to digital presses. Moninder mentions that students pursuing BTech at the department are highly privileged as the packaging printing market all over the world is now heading to a new level of growth. He further explains that their curriculum gives broader focus on die-cutting, specialty substrates, etc, which are essentials in packaging prints. Abandoning all negative thoughts and speculations over the beginning of the end of the era of printed newspapers, Moninder shrugs to say, “How come it would happen in India where the industry is gaining growth gradually day-by-day.” He mentions that the newspaper industry, which is the second largest sector (first being the automobile), will always survive in one way or the other. He agrees to the fact that electronic devices and gadgets serve faster than printed newspapers in popping up breaking news. “But in semi-rural or non-metropolitan cities, circulations of printed newspapers

keep rising and new titles are pouring in,” observes Moninder. “There was a time when we browsed for newspapers available in the market, only a few leading national dailies were available; but the scenario has changed a lot today as you can find a dozen of quality regional dailies, weeklies, tabloids circulating all around, gaining readership so successfully in rural and semi-urban geographies,” he explains. Besides seasonal jobs like printing of question papers, calendars, annual reports, student magazines, and annual publications of the university, the Printing & Publication Department of Kurukshetra University prints Research Journal of Haryana Studies, Research Journal of Arts & Humanities, Digest of Indological Studies and all general books published by the varsity. Joining the debate on the sustainability of printed materials, Moninder opines ‘printing industry is eternal’ as it always be and will continue to print invitation cards of first birthdays to death anniversary information cards.

Born on October 15, 1931 at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, Dr Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam,

specialised in Aeronautical Engineering from Madras Institute of Technology. Dr Kalam made significant contribution as project director to develop India's first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III) which successfully injected the Rohini satellite in the near earth orbit in July 1980 and made India an exclusive member of Space Club. He was responsible for the evolution of ISRO's launch vehicle programme, particularly the PSLV configuration. After working for two decades in ISRO and mastering launch vehicle technologies, Dr Kalam took up the responsibility of developing Indigenous Guided Missiles at Defence Research and Development Organisation as the chief executive of Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). He was responsible for the development and operationalisation of AGNI and PRITHVI Missiles and for building indigenous capability in critical technologies through networking of multiple institutions. He was the scientific adviser to defence minister and secretary, Department of Defence Research & Development from July 1992 to December 1999. During this period he led to the weaponisation of strategic missile systems and the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in collaboration with Department of Atomic Energy, which made India a nuclear weapon State. Above all he took up a mission to ignite the young minds for national development by meeting high school students across the country.In his literary pursuit four of Dr Kalam's books – Wings of Fire, India 2020 - A Vision for the New Millennium, My journey and Ignited Minds - Unleashing the power within India have become household names in India and among the Indian nationals abroad. These books have been translated in many Indian languages.Dr Kalam was one of the most distinguished scientists of India with the unique honour of receiving honorary doctorates from 30 universities and institutions. He was awarded the coveted civilian awards - Padma Bhushan (1981) and Padma Vibhushan (1990) and the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna (1997). We have a capacity to produce 20,000-30,000 books on

an average every day, shares Ravi Shroff, managing director, Nutech Print Services. In order to cater to more black-and-white publishing jobs, the company has recently taken over Baba Barkha Nath Printers, with Timmy Kuthiala, former managing director at Baba Barkha Nath Printers, joining as the vice-president of operations at Nutech Print Services. “At Nutech, 70-80 percent output is 4-colour while Baba Barkha Nath catered to the black-and-white segment and they had a set of very good clients in the book publishing segment. As such, it was a total synergistic acquisition. We took many months to work out the deal,” told Ravi. As a matter of fact, the equipment at Baba Barkha Nath was not a part of the deal. “Some of the employees at Baba Barkha Nath are being absorbed in Nutech,” added Ravi. Baba Barkha Nath Printers is a 37-year-old company, which initially started with a phototypesetting machine. They have been one of the leading book printers in India.

The print jobs…With a four decade legacy, Nutech Print Services offers pre-press, press and finishing facilities to the publishing industry and commercial jobs to corporates. With the help of their 300-plus workforce across their plant in Ballabgarh (Delhi-NCR) and sales & admin office in New Delhi, they can produce

any trim size, be it monochrome or high-end colour printing. Their mix of work runs from basic one-colour paperback to high-end 4-colour coffee table/children's books, school text books, dictionaries, colouring books, travel guides, calendars, bible printing on 28 gsm paper and much more with finishing facilities including soft- and hardcover binding.Their press installation include 8-colour press, four 4-colour presses, and four single colour machines to meet all kinds of production requirements.On asking about the publishing vs. commercial business, Ravi replied that 80 percent of their job is for book publishing while 20 percent is for other commercial jobs like marketing collaterals. The ratio of domestic vs export business is 40:60 for them. “We are aiming at an equal

balance. Exports jobs are very demanding as expectations remain very high,” shared Ravi.

Popular sizes of books…There are three popular sizes of books – A4, B-format and crown size. “The majority publishing work is in A4 and B-format. Most of the textbook publishers are now going for standardisation towards A4 format, which also gets them better pricing,” shared Ravi.

Consumables used…Nutech uses both indigenous as well as imported paper, of which 70 percent consumption is of indigenous paper. They use Bible, uncoated, coated paper,

high bulk paper, etc. “It is more comfortable to work with foreign paper mills as most of them have a three months validity for their paper prices, which is not seen in India, but the long delivery times makes it difficult to use more Foreign paper,” told Ravi.Another important consumable is ink/varnishes and Ravi always uses quality inks from world leaders Toyo and Sakata.

Trends in print runs…With the print runs decreasing in the publishing segment, what is the trend Ravi sees? “The print runs for fiction is coming down as publishers want to print less, test market it and then place the second run. They do not wish to stock excess printed copies and pulp unsold copies in the end,” told Ravi.“Similarly, the print runs of dictionaries and reference books has come down drastically. This is because such information is easily available online,” he added. But, there is a silver lining. “The print runs in education segment (K-12 segment) is going high, increasing at a rate of 10-12 percent every year,” he told. Reprints are more in education segment. “Computer books are frequently updated and have a low shelf life while medical books have an average shelf life of 4-5 years,” he added.With publishing houses going for

digital printing, is Nutech also looking at this aspect? “Not at the moment…we feel there is already excess capacity in Digital and the cost being offered by printers is not viable. Also there are many small vendors who are efficiently giving economical solutions to the publishers. So right now, we wish to focus on our core business,” answered Ravi as a matter of fact.

On challenges…“The cost of labour is growing high, and efficiencies are not improving as they should. Besides, there is stiff competition in this field,” told Ravi. But, he believes that their strengths have helped them face all odds. “We are a solution provider and not just a printer. Our customers are loyal repeat customers as we try to give them a full solution on time. We are a professionally-run company and we have very good quality of manpower across all levels - Which I believe can be a great differentiator,” shared Ravi.

On competition with Chinese printing…Though printing industry seems to be facing stiff competition from Chinese printing industry, Ravi has a different opinion. “China is a container pusher. Not every publisher wants container jobs. Few publishers are looking for small to medium runs - Here, India’s role comes into play. Besides, Indians have an obvious advantage in being fully conversant in English language. One should know ones advantage and try to focus on it,” told Ravi.

Future plans…“India is a huge geographical region and feel many times opportunity exists for print runs to be split, basis delivery requirements. We wish to have our presence in down South and are open to have an understanding with a printer in South - so work can be shared and produced in South,” concluded Ravi.

Technology, JJ School of Arts, Mumbai, RB Kashyap has 31 years of experience in the printing industry. He started his career in 1984 with Comart, Mumbai, which was a leading pre-press unit at that time. “Pre-press was very popular at that time. There were only 2-3 drum scanners in the country and Comart was one of them having that. The company was doing ad campaigns for well-known brands like Raymond, Vimal Sarees, Shyam Ahuja, etc and we were scanning 100-200 sets of campaigns every day. It was an analogue scanner and all corrections were done manually, which was a difficult task. There was no room for mistake. But, gradually I learned the tricks of the trade,” shares Kashyap.In 1987, Kashyap moved to Thomson Press, Delhi. “I stayed here for seven days and was on trial on scanner. My work was appreciated and I joined as the head of scanning department. I spent two years in scanning and systems. Gradually, I started taking care of planning, camera and layout sections as well. Soon, I was heading the entire pre-press unit, with a staff of 200 people,” says Kashyap.

He was also instrumental in setting up an independent pre-press unit in Okhla, New Delhi. Today, Kashyap is the unit head of Thomson Press, Faridabad, taking care of the entire printing operations.Kashyap’s strengths include colours, pre-press, press and binding, in which he has thorough knowledge. “I can detect a problem by merely looking at the printed piece,” he says. He is a part of the investment policies of the management and has been actively involved in equipment

A large international customer event took place at KBA-Sheetfed Solutions in Radebeul, near Dresden, with the

LED-UV & Traditional UV Conference from June 24-26, 2015. The event was a resounding success with around 1,000 print experts from mo-re than 30 countries in attendance. This huge level of interest shows just how important the topic of UV printing in diverse variations has now become to the print industry and how important sharing the knowledge is. Nevertheless, the event did not just focus on this technical topic. The visiting print pundits were treated to two new product developments at once with practical live demonstrations of the Rapida 105 PRO unveiled at Print China in April and the inline Rapida RDC (rotary die cutter). These standards address design, arrangements, designation, and colour scheme of controls and signaling devices, guarding and interlocking of guards, mechanical safety devices, symbology, and safe practices as they apply to printing equipment.The USTAG to TC130 consists of industry experts who provide ANSI with guidance on the development of the US position on International Standards relating to all areas of the graphic arts including, but not limited to technologies such as ink, process control, plates, blankets, digital data exchange, environmental impact of printed products, management of security printing, printing certification requirements, safety and colour management.

The graphic arts industry has changed immensely and forces the supply industry to make organisational

changes. Koenig & Bauer (KBA) therefore recently took this shift into account by spinning-off business units operating on the market and production activities from the future holding company. certified as per ISO – 12647-2(2013 version) Printing standards. The prestigious certification was bestowed by Heidelberg Druckmaschinen AG, Germany, the leading offset printing press manufacturer in the world, at an official event organised at JC Graphics’ printing unit at Vijayawada. Klaus Nielsen, managing director-Heidelberg India handed the ISO certificate to Ratnakar Hegde, the chairman and founder of JC Graphics.The ISO12647-2 certification sets the bars high and places higher demands on the excellence of print output. Quality-conscious print buyers are increasingly looking for print providers with ISO certification, which guarantees accountable quality control and consistency.Heidelberg conferred the certification as per ISO 12647–2 standards, after several rigorous rounds of tests on prepress, press and production, including print run on various substrates, dot-gain calibration and consistency of delta-E values. The ISO 12647–2 certification ensures that there is no compromise on the excellence of quality. The ‘Punyabhushan’ is awarded every year to an eminent personality from the field of arts, music, culture, science, industry, social service and sports by Punyabhushan Foundation. The foundation was established in 1989 with a view to express a profound gratitude towards the citizens of Pune who have made an exceptional contribution to the national and international forums and transformed Pune city into conspicuous place on the map of India and the world.
