Oral Cancer remains one of the most common forms of cancer. In India, oral cancer has the highest incidence of any type of cancer in males. In North America, oral cancer is the sixth most common type of cancer. e incidence of oral cancer has remained relatively constant for the past 40 years and the 5 year survival rates have not improved. During that same 40 year period many other types of cancer have had a decrease in incidence rates and noticeable improvements in long term prognosis. Since oral cancer develops in an anatomic location, readily accessible to observation and diagnosis the lack of improvement in oral cancer outcomes represents a paradox in the current climate of improvements in overall health care. e role of the dentist in early detection and appropriate referral of patients with potential oral cancer lesions will continue to be the first line of defense and a play a primary role to improve cancer prognosis. ORAL LESIONS: AN ANATOMIC APPROACH TO DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS e objective of this presentation is to guide the participants to develop an approach for the differential diagnosis of lesions of the soſt tissues of the oral cavity through evaluation of key features of the lesions and reference to the anatomy/histology of the intraoral site. CHARLES F. SHULER, DMD, PHD, is the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of British Columbia.
