Paper CutsBig Ideas

The kindergarten class-room I attended had hardwood floors, long, low tables and an exit

leading to an unfenced playground. The first day, I painted a picture of an apple tree. We wore smocks to keep our clothes clean. We gathered in a big circle and played Farmer in the Dell. Kindergarten class, for five year olds, was from 9 am to noon, five days per week. Grades one to eight ran 9 am to 4 pm. Two recesses and a lunch hour. We walked to school and we walked home. Lunch was eaten at home, alone, if your parent worked. We didn’t eat junk. Parents didn’t stand in foyers armed with umbrellas, nor did they wait in idling cars to pick us up and save us from the rain or snow or the bullies. We learned to read and to think. We learned to print. We advanced to writing–now optional, apparently, and referred to as “cursive”–and we were taught how to hold our pens correctly. Art was impor-tant, as were music and phys ed. We were required to read a map, complete a bank deposit slip and do our own homework. We were expected to know how to spell. Accurately. And use proper gram-

mar. Always. We knew the difference between correct and incorrect usage. If we didn’t, someone made sure we had help to learn well before we advanced to the next grade. We were taught to respect adults. We socialized–played outdoors after school and on weekends–and carried on conversations. Good manners were ex-pected at all times. We were encouraged to contribute to family and community. Competence, confidence, independence were the goals. Critical thinking and “bigger idea” are terms that gained popularity in recent years. We were capable of conceptual thinking but it wasn’t labeled as such, and it wasn’t at the expense of the fun-damentals, the social skills and academic abilities that, later on, enabled us to write an essay, create a cover letter or make a positive impression at a job interview. A few years ago, I returned to college for more education including Teaching English As a Second Language and Social Services. I followed up by working as an Edu-cational Assistant in both elementary and secondary classes schools. Here’s what I observed: Change is not always progress.

A NOTE FROM MARG My volunteer life in Bobcaygeon began when I was asked to join the Kinette Club of Bobcaygeon in 1968. Since then I have become a member of other organizations, The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 239, Bobcaygeon Canada Day Committee and the Canadian Cancer Society. I have had the privilege of being appointed Chairman of many of these committees as well as other special celebration committees in the village. Having this honour of receiving awards and recognition because of everyone who advised or worked with me. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal is a great honour and I accept it on behalf of each and every one of the dedicated volunteers who work so hard along with me. I am so overwhelmed to have been recognized. Remember, “You are the wind beneath my wings.” Thank you to the citizens of Bobcaygeon, my family and friends.Margaret McLean

LETTER TO THE EDITORWalking through Bobcaygeon amid the hot days of summer is always a pleasure. As a resident of Bobcaygeon, I for one am proud of the newly refurbished Bolton Street. It is hard to remember that barely six months ago we were still under construction with all its frustrations. The completed streetscape finished with beautiful hanging baskets and completed garden beds has transformed Bolton Street into a real inviting Village treasure. When I look at the beautification efforts that local citizens and visitors enjoy, I think it is important to recognize the people who were instrumental in ensuring that the newly created garden beds on Bolton Street look as terrific as they do. I am sure most residents think that the City of Kawartha Lakes was responsible for completing all the plantings in the seven newly constructed planting beds along Bolton Street. Actually it was the concentrated efforts of a few concerned local citizens who weeded, improved the soil, raised the money to purchase the plants and ensured all was ready for our “ Unlock the Summer” celebrations. These Bolton Street champions need to be acknowledged and appreciated. Accordingly a BIG thankyou to :Mr. & Mrs. Robert Allingham, seasonal residents who provided the funds to purchase all the shrubs for six of the seven beds on Bolton Street;W & G Landscaping who donated and planted shrubs for the bed in front of the parking lot, as well as mulching most of the seven beds for free;Strangs Garden Centre who also provided free mulch;John Bick and myself who weeded, prepared the soil, purchased the plants and completed the plantings; Mr. & Mrs. Ed McGrath, seasonal residents who provided the funds to purchase all the plants for the six Swing Bridge planters; and Diane Hearse for co-ordinating these efforts; The Bobcaygeon Chamber of Commerce for co-ordinating the hanging baskets program after the Horticultural Society reluctantly informed the town that they could no longer fund the initiative; The many retailers who purchased baskets that hang with their name tags on it - a classy touch; and

The City of Kawartha Lakes who provided the maple trees for each of the seven beds. Bobcaygeon is a wonderful community to live in and it is terrific to see how local and seasonal residents, town retailers, and the Chamber of Commerce partnered effectively to ensure our town retained the beautification standards that we have all come to expect. May the pride in our community remain strong and continue to prosper.Diane Hearse

HOw STUPIDCAN THEy GET?

Well, REALLY, REALLY stupid. Whoever decided to resurface County Road 8, then County Rd 30 and now part of Hwy 36 at the bridge in Bobcaygeon in an area that depends a great deal on tourism in the summertime is REALLY, REALLY STUPID. I am not sure who runs this supposed City. It does not appear to be Council other than spending our money so it must be the bureaucrats.REALLY, REALLY STUPIDRuss Woodard

TO THE EDITOR I would like to thank the writer of the DEAR SIR letter in the August 10th edition for making the plight of her father-in-law public. The Norland and Area Seniors Club have been

fighting Senior Abuse especially in Long Term Care Homes (formerly called Nursing Homes) for almost a year. This abuse is systemic and there is no enforcement of legislation that OUTLAWS ANY kind of abuse or neglect. The Norland and Area Seniors Club encourage ANYONE concerned about this issue to contact us and JOIN the fight. Our Seniors have built this country, and they are entitled to be treated with respect and compassion in their Golden (???) years.Karl Braeker, President Norland and Area Seniors Club

Possible FutureInfrastructure Projects

The Council unanimously approved the following project applications to be applied for under the Community lnfrastructure lmprovement Fund (CllF) Grant in the following priority: 1. Lindsay Water Pollution Control Plant – $5M. 2. Lindsay Ops Landfill Site Expansion - $360K. 3. Norland Community Centre (Community Services)- $770K 4. Bobcaygeon Forbert Pool (Community Services) - $600K. As with all Federal Government funding, in this case $150m, they will require that the City provide 50% as our share and the Government will provide the balance. One wrinkle is that those project applications that guarantee 66.667% will receive priority. All projects are required to begin

and substantially complete construction prior to March 31, 2014.

Budget Direction for 2013The Budget Advisory Committee provided their recommended budget direction to Council prior to staff initiating the Proposed Operating and Capital Budget. The Budget Advisory Committee advised Council that 2.5% is the target for 2013. Don’t we wish! Personally I am looking forward to seeing how quickly Mark Fisher, the new Chief Administration Officer fits in to running City Hall. From his resume I am cautiously optimistic. He has an extensive background in finance and his first day is slated for September 10.

Solar PowerAs one of the first orders of business, Council approved three motions to support roof top Solar Power installations for properties in Bobcaygeon, Lindsay, Woodville and Fenelon Falls. Through the “Feed-In Tariff” program (FIT), applicants will be able to sell the excess power back to the Ontario Power Authority. Sounds good to me!

“Our Kawartha Lakes”An Integrated Community Sustainability Plan for the

City of Kawartha Lakes

The City of Kawartha Lakes is taking action to transform our Kawartha Lakes into a more successful, desirable, and sustainable place to live through the development of an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan called “Our Kawartha Lakes”.

This long-term plan, developed in consultation with community members, provides direction for the community to realize sustainability objectives for the environmen-tal, cultural, social and economic dimensions that make up “Our Kawartha Lakes”. The Plan also identies specic Actions to ensure that its Visions and Objectives are realized in a meaningful and responsible manner.

“I have had the great pleasure to work closely with the over 100 volunteers who have created this plan. Through this work, we have discovered that we are a very principled community, considerate of the legacy we will leave for our children. The Sustainability Plan will allow us to create the kind of community we want for ourselves and future generations so that the quality of life for our children is equal to or even surpasses what we inherited from our ancestors. I am honoured to be championing this important plan,” said Councillor Pat Warren.

Public Open HousesPlease join us to view the draft sustainability plan recommendations and actions including details regarding our nine focus areas. On display will be Visions, Goals and Objectives, The ICSP document, and presentations reecting the work of over 100 community volunteers covering nine focus areas.

pipeline over or under the Scugog River took well over an hour to resolve. This multi-million dollar project has been in the pipeline (no pun intended) for over 4 years now. The NWT is critical to the expansion of the City of Kawartha Lakes for the foreseeable future. Things were moving along well until the last Council meeting when Councillor James took exception to Staff’s recommendation that the pipeline should go under the Scugog River. It was his conviction that the pipeline should be going over the river utilizing the underpinnings of a bridge. It is his belief that it would be the best option environmentally, while less costly. At that time Council directed Staff to review this option. The report from Staff was completed and given to all members for their review and consideration. The contention of Staff is that while going over the river is an option, they believe tunnelling under the river would be the way to go. To seriously consider

such a dramatic change and the time necessary to do an Environmental Assessment (wetlands at one end of the bridge) would cause a considerable delay and thereby endanger contractual commitments with developers. Mr. Seaton, Eng., Staff Project Leader, further believes that the cost of going over the river could add as much as $1 to $1.3 million. Director of Development Services, Ron Taylor said, “to consider other options now would be a game changer.” Almost all the Councillors weighed in either for or against the ‘over the water’ option, being championed by Councillor James. In the end, in a recorded vote of 8 against and 7 in favour, Council defeated laying the pipe over the water. Councillors Ron Ashmore (Ward 14) and Heather Stauble (Ward 16) were absent. In a further motion, Council sided with Staff to continue going under the river as planned. This was also a recorded vote with 8 for and 7 against. In both instances, the Mayor’s vote was the deciding factor.

It was a wonderful tribute to one man’s determination and selflessness when George McLaughlin was presented with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee award. Family and friends were among the special guests, and several spoke of George’s achievements. They highlighted his dedicated works within the agricultural industry (specifically the milk and sheep industries), the education profession and Scouts Canada. COMMUNITy GARDEN

Older Adults Partner On Summer Project

Art Buechler and Charlie Gibson both grew up on farms albeit in different corners of the world. Decades later, the men are part of a group of enthusiastic older adults, who came together to grow a community garden. With seeding, watering, weeding and nurturing, the garden thrived, as has the spirit of the gardeners. For client Jack Fairfull, “The best part is being outside.” For Art, it’s enjoying this project with his wife, Joan. They are, after all, “like two peas in a pod.” The garden produced dill, peas, peppers, beets, strawberries, cucumbers butter beans, chives and more. Eileen Carew, Program Coordinator, Felicity Lukace, Program Assistant, Rosanne Moloney, Supervisor of the Adult Day Program and summer student, Bethany Burgin, guided the team. According to Mike Puffer, Director of Marketing and Development, Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes, the garden is just one of the programs within the Adult Day Program. “This is a partnership with Trinity United in Bobcaygeon. The Adult Day program is held at the church on Wednesdays and Fridays,” he says. “The garden is actually a church project and the tending to it is done by our clients, thus giving them something fun to do outside. The Adult Day Program provides many well-organized social and recreational activities that are vital to healthy, independent aging.

Aries (March 21 to April 20)Your love life is about to take a dramatic twist, dear Aries. This may or may not be what you are expecting or hoping for, and in the short-term it could be painful. In the long-run, however, you will undoubtedly wonder what all the fuss was about – because you will be much happier.

Taurus (April 21 to May 21)Your zodiac colour is the restful deep green. Green denotes life, growth, and renewal. But on the flip side is the green-eyed monster of jealousy. Which do you choose today, Taurus? Can you fight the urge to be envious in your every day life and exchange it for the excitement that comes with growth and replenishment? Make the effort.

Gemini (May 22 to June 22)Currently, Gemini, money plays a big role in your life. Having enough for some little extras is a wonderful thing, but do not let it become the centre of your attention. Use it wisely and enjoy! Cancer (June 23 to July 23)We’ve often been told that humour is the best medicine. Well, we agree! So go ahead and laugh, laugh, laugh, dear Cancer. Laugh with others and make silly jokes to make others laugh. It is so worth it!

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23)New job opportunities abound at this time, Leo. Pace yourself, find a suitable routine, and make sure you make time for yourself, your social activities and health needs. If you do all this and still can focus on your work, your career will surely take off.

Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23)There are angels everywhere, Virgo, but you have to be open to them if you wish to find them and welcome them into your

life – and we all need angels. So open up your mind to new possibilities; then marvel at the results!

Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23)Libra, it’s time for that romantic getaway – just you and your special person. Take the time now to make this happen and watch what it does for your relationship! Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22)Are you feeling slightly claustrophobic, Scorpio? Like the walls are closing in on you and there’s no way to escape? Keep in mind – everyone feels like this at some point. You will overcome this. We are sending our positive thoughts your way. But, please, if you cannot conquer this on your own, do not be afraid to seek the help you need. Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21)We sense a new beginning just around the corner for you, Sag. We know you are restless, anticipating all the great things ahead. But stay calm and focused. As well as exciting, your new life could be stressful. You will definitely need your wits about you.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 o Jan. 20)There’s an exciting world out there, Capricorn, waiting to be discovered. You have been hesitant in the past to move out of your comfort zone. We feel now is the time, and we feel you will not regret it. Sign up for that class; ask a friend out for coffee; above all, keep moving forward!

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Jan. 20)Your hard work and determination is definitely being rewarded at this time, Aquarius. Your colleagues look up to you and know they can count on you. Don’t let anyone take advantage of you – you are your own master. Don’t forget this.

Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20)Pisces is obviously the most watery of all zodiac signs, sharing the varying water traits of calm and quiet reserve, overwhelming and rushing intensity and sometimes an almost sorrowful sensitivity. You are most compatible with other water signs such as Scorpio and Cancer and other Pisces, yet you are constantly trying to adapt to your own ever-changing feelings – and you must learn to adapt to others’ feelings as well.

FOOD FOR KIDSBy Barb Khagram

We all know the importance of breakfast, especially for children. With a new school year around the corner, Sandra Clements is looking for volunteers to help with a program that ensures all students begin their day with a nutritious breakfast. Sandra is the Volunteer Recruitment & Fundraising Coordinator of the Food for Kids program that operates in all schools in the City of Kawartha Lakes. They offer items such as fruit, yogurt and granola bars. Often, kids forget their lunch, need a little extra or arrive at school without taking time to eat. The food is available to everyone.

Many schools have a designated room where kids can pick up their breakfast items, and at St. Mary’s School in Lindsay, clients from Community Living prepare hot breakfasts for students. Local businesses and service clubs donate funds and food to the program, and the local Health Unit supports the Food for Kids program. Sandra said that coordinators have great relationships with grocery stores that provide food at a discount. With no overheads or salaries, 100 percent of the funding goes to provide food for students. Sandra began as a volunteer and has funding for two years through the Trillium program for fundraising, to raise awareness and recruit volunteers. If you can volunteer for the Food for Kids program, contact Sandra Clements, 705.738.9602. See the website at www.foodforkidsckl.ca.

KawarthaArts Festival

23 Years Vibrant!

Twenty-three years in and the Kawartha Arts Festival is as strong, as vibrant and delightfully surprising as ever. That’s partly due to the introduction of new artists, and partly due to the dedication of those who eagerly return to a show that is so well regarded by artists and guests. What’s different this year? Organizer Maude Skoog explains, “We have three new featured artists along with many, many good artists who are coming back. We are so glad to have them.” Among the new exhibitors is David Vasquez, an artist whose career began in the Dominican

Republic 20 years ago. David’s work is recognizable by strong, bright colours and bold expressions. Anna Whitmore is relatively new to her journey as a professional, full-time artist. A former kindergarten teacher, she pursues her passion of portraying what she calls, “the struggles of nature.” Dwayne James, artist and illustrator, permits a glimpse of his keen wit even within the titles of his watercolours. “Tickle Bird,” is an example that is left to the observer to discover. There are more than 100 exhibitors to meet at the Festival. They come from alL over Ontario and Quebec. Part of the excitement is the variety of superb work and part is the opportunity to talk with the artists. The atmosphere is calm, fun and family-oriented where one may purchase a piece of work directly from its creator and walk away knowing you have gained precious insight into his or her

KAWARTHA SETTLERS’ VILLAGENotes from the Manager

In so many ways, fall is just around the corner and, often, people seem to be disappointed by this. I am not one of them. I am so excited about our fall plans for the Village that I can hardly sit still long enough to write about them. Our first annual Settlers’ Harvest Festival isgoing to be wonderful with demonstrations on how to bake a pie from scratch, how to make preserves, wreaths for fall decorating, scarecrows and even how to prepare your bulbs for fall! There will be games for children; pumpkin toss/rolling/painting, donut bobbing (or biting), face painting, stories about the pioneer harvest. Food--I haven’t mentioned the food! Heritage Kitchens are serving dinner from 4-6 pm with BBQ pork on a spit, salads and fresh apple pie with Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream. Tickets are $10.00 advance, (children 12 and under $5.) or $12.00 at the Event. Is all of this talk making you thirsty? Try our beer and wine garden, sit by the veranda and enjoy a full slate of entertainment, a period fashion show, local musicians, Cicela and Edith, Bruce and the boys and Caygeon Spice. For a quick snack, there’s fresh corn, dipped in butter and sprinkled with a dash of sea salt, cooked over the fire. There will be many more activities and demonstrations, buggy rides, furriers at the Trappers Cabin and yes, our PIE CONTEST! For those of you who know how to bake, bring your pies in and they will be judged by our experts! Strangely enough, several men have volunteered for this job! Hope you can join the fun, September 15 from 1 pm until 6 pm.Isn’t fall a fun time? Throw in a couple of other activities like the Fair and Thanksgiving and you will have yourself a fun-fuelled fall. This is the last call for our photo contest. Entries must be in by August 31, 2012. Last year’s entries are on display in the Henderson House. Come on up and see us! We are open daily into October.

THE MORETHINGS CHANGE

By David Sparkes

There are boxes and boxes of photographs in our basement. Every year we resolve to get them sorted and organized during the winter months and every

year the task proves to be too daunting. This year is no different and we will again set forth on a mission that may well be doomed to failure. Typically, we end up with photos scattered on every possible surface as we sit reminiscing about vacations taken many years ago or the identity of some nondescript individual who somehow found his or her way into our photographic library. Sound familiar? Over the past decade our collection of images has grown substantially but in a different format. Now we have a digital collection stored on hard drives, various disks and other storage forms. I am also told that we have a collection stored “in the cloud” although I have yet to hear an explanation of exactly what that means. Whenever I ask the question, the reply comes in a foreign language for which no dictionary exists. But, the point is, we no longer have to pay to have the images processed in order to keep them. Therefore we take many more photos and lots of videos using all manner of different devices. We can download them onto our computer and organize them in hundreds of different ways. We can also edit our own movies, make photo albums over the internet and have them beautifully printed and sent to us, make them look like an oil painting and transfer them to canvas, post them on Facebook or e-mail them to friends. The options are endless – enough to make your head spin. Like many of you, I watched those athletes stream into the Olympic Stadium in London, holding their digital cameras and cell phones aloft. But, in my case, I was wondering what would be the fate of all those images in the years to come. Will future generationsgo“intothecloud”andfindbillionsofphotographs scattered hither and thither (digitally speaking) and wonder how they can organize them. Perhaps it will become an annual feature on their winter projects list. The more things change the more they remain the same. Did someone already say that?

All About Your HealthCHANGES

Caregiver Support Programs

Why would you make time to attend a meeting with other caregivers? First, there’s the opportunity to connect with others to share similar experiences. There’s the chance to explore the challenges of caregiving. Explore self-care. Gain new knowledge and skills you need for the long haul. And to share information about the community resources available to you. Community Care knows this. They’ve even made programming changes to address your needs as a caregiver. According to Mike Puffer, Director of Marketing & Development, Health and Support Services, Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes announces changes to the agency’s Caregiver Support Services, in order to adapt to the changing needs of clients and local residents seeking support as they care for a family member, friend or neighbour. As of September, the session in Lindsay will be changed in order for Community Care to present a monthly support group for individuals who are caring for someone with a serious or life-threatening illness. The support group will be held the second Wednesday of the month at Community Care’s Hospice Services building, 112 McLaughlin Rd., Lindsay from 10 to 11:30 am. Regular monthly open support groups for caregivers, regardless of specific health conditionor stage of illness, will continue to be the firstWednesday in Fenelon Falls. The Fenelon sessions take place from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at the Salvation Army Citadel, 42 Bond St. W. This is an open group for people who are caring for someone, regardless ofthespecifichealthconditionorstageofillness. There is no charge to attend either group. Sessions feature light refreshments and guest speakers who are experts with various caregiver support issues. For information or to register, contact Community Care at 705.324.7323.

depends mostly on a person’s report or complaints and feelings. Pain is the most prominent symptom offibromyalgia. Itgenerallyoccurs throughout thebody, although it may start in one region, such as the neck and shoulders, and spread to other areas over a period of time. Amajorityofpeoplesufferingfromfibromyalgiaexperience moderate or severe fatigue with lack of energy, decreased exercise endurance, or the kind of exhaustion that results from the flu or lack ofsleep. Sometimes the fatigue is more of a problem than the pain. Headaches, especially muscular (tension headaches) and migraine headaches, are common with fibromyalgia. Abdominal pain, bloating and alternating constipation and bladder spasms and irritability may cause urinary urgency or frequency. A person’s skin and blood circulation can be sensitive to temperature changes, resulting in temporary changes in skin colour. As a doctor trained in Chiropractic Neurology, I take a different approach to the treatment and prevention of fibromyalgia. After a thoroughneurological exam, I determine which part of the nervous system is not functioning properly. In many fibromyalgia patients I may find a highmesencephalic output. There are three parts to the brain stem: top, middle and lower. The mesencephalon is the

top part of the brain stem. A high output of the mesencephalon will cause an increased pulse and heartrate, theinabilitytosleep, orawaking, fitfulsleep. Other symptoms might include urinary tract infections, increased warmth and sweating, and sensitivity to light. Along with a high mesencephalic output, thefibromyalgiapatientmaypresentwithadecreased output of the cerebellum. The cerebellum controls coordinated movement and all of the muscles of the spinal column. No matter what the condition, it is imperative that the chiropractic neurologist performs a thorough and comprehensive exam to determine the exact nature of the patient’s condition. Fibromyalgia patients, as with all chronic (symptoms longer than six months) type patients must be monitored closely, before and after treatments (blood pressure, pulse SpO2). If the patient is not monitored, it is possible to over-stimulate or exceed metabolic capacity. Since the upper part of the brain stem (mesencephalon) isfiringatanabnormallyhighrate, wewillwanttoutilize modalities that will lower the mesencephalic output.

SAVE YOUR LIFEMake Sure Your Smoke Alarms Work

The City of Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service reminds residents, cottagers, and guests to ensure that their family and friends remain safe by installing and maintaining working smoke alarms on every level of their homes, cottages, bunkies, R.V.’s, and motor homes, plus outside all sleeping areas. “We also ask that you remind your friends, neighbours and travelling companions of this

important safety issue,” said Ron Woolfrey, Fire Prevention Inspector. Many new R.V. models and motor homes may already have working smoke alarms, however, older models may not be equipped with smoke alarms. Owners need to have alarms purchased and properly installed. Maintaining smoke alarms requires they be tested at least monthly and after an absence of more than a few days. Smoke alarms that are 10 years old or older must be replaced. Newer alarms have an expiry date molded into the plastic housing. Even though an older alarm may “test” properly, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and replace as required and remember to change the batteries at least once a year. Failure to comply with Ontario Fire Code smoke alarmrequirementscanresultinafineoffrom$235up to a maximum of $50,000. Worse still, such failure could possibly result in a tragic loss for you,

a member of your family or friends through injury or deathfromafire.

YOGA BESIDE THE LAKEBody, Mind…Picture Perfect

One of the best parts of Heather Gowans’ lifelong goal is, now that she has achieved it, she can share it. That was the plan. A yoga instructor who describes her style as “welcoming, fun and accommodating,” she created a home studio where students benefit from theambiance of natural elements—water, earth and sky—and get to enjoy her professional expertise at the same time. The lakefront studio near Bobcaygeon, active since last January, is picture perfect. While Heather hastaughtyogaforfifteenyears, shehaspracticedfor forty. She says, “I’m actually a hyper person. The main difference is, yoga centres me. It makes everything come into harmony. It’s connecting with that gut feel we all have. The struggles and stressors of life—yoga makes it all stop. I tune in and tune up and it makes me able to cope much better.” This all sounds mystical and ethereal. Heather is anything but. She’s grounded, personable and insightful, with a great laugh and sense of humour. With levels from gentle through intermediate, she now leads programs for seniors, too. The gentle level is comfortable, intermediate level keeps her

challenged and the seniors provide an entirely new realm of joy. “Youfinallygettheheadtogetherandthebodystartsgoing.Ihadtofindawaytocounteractthat,”she laughs. Those with concerns about inexperience, chronic pain or other limitations are assured that Heather is mindful of individuals and will cue safe modificationsofeverypose. Heather customizes every class to provide variety, encouragement and direction. Beyond the research and known benefits of yoga, her seniorstudents have commented: I can tie my shoes again. I wish I had started this when I was forty. I’ve been sleeping so well and don’t feel as stiff in the morning. The eldest senior, she says, is 85 years old. Heather says, “I am so heartfelt by what I get out of my students. The seniors, for example, give me that hour of their lives to share what I know about yoga. And they are so appreciative.” Watch for new sessions beginning in September. Contact 705.738.4255 or [email protected]. Her role is to inspire students to achieve a better way of living and improve their quality of life. The fact she can do it with the added sounds of water and chimes in such a peaceful space--both indoors and out--makes it a place of refuge and tranquility. Just the kind of place where you want to go back.
