Seventy-six families from around the state, one from each participating county, have been named a 2012 Farm Family of the Year by the University of Minnesota. The families were of cially recog-nized in a ceremony Thursday, Aug. 9 at the annual Farmfest near Redwood Falls, Minn. Pro les of the 2012 honor-ees and information on the recognition event can be found on the Universitys farm family website at http://mnfarm-families.cfans.umn.edu. Farm families and agriculture are a major driver of Minnesotas economy and the vitality of Minnesotas rural communities, said Bev Durgan, dean of University of Minnesota Extension. The University of Minnesota is proud

The political talk this summer is all about jobs and job creators. Much of this discussion often seems to focus on urban jobs in manufacturing plants. That focus overlooks the important role agriculture plays in creating jobs in both rural com-munities and big cities. Minnesotas farm families created jobs throughout the Great Recession. The strength of agriculture is a big reason why our state unemployment rate remains lower than the national average. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture re-ports that 342,000 Minnesotans have jobs because of the impact of growing and processing food. Those jobs are part of a total economic impact of $75 billion to Minnesotas economy and a strong contributor to our states export strength. Min-nesota exports of corn, soybeans, wheat, pork, beef, dairy products, poultry and host of other items bring about $5 billion of additional money into our state each year. The economic engine that is Minnesota agriculture starts at the kitchen tables of farm families throughout the state. For while farming is a big business in Min-nesota, the business of farming in Minnesota is family driven. According to USDA statistics, 95 percent of Minnesota farms are family-owned.

    Family farmers are job creators

to recognize these outstanding families for their contributions to agriculture and their communities. Families were selected by their lo-cal county Extension committees for having demonstrated a commitment to enhancing and supporting agriculture. Dairy farmers that were honored as 2012 Farm Families of the Year in-clude: Becker County Jay and Anna Brown Famiy Benton County Jeremy and Barb Larson Family Carlton County Newman Dairy Carver County Heuer Dairy Inc. Cottonwood County Tom and Marilyn Fast Family Dakota County Bremer Farms

Dodge County The Alberts Fam-ily Douglas County Max and Lyla Radil Fillmore County LeRoy and Dar-leen Johnson Goodhue County Rostad Farms Houston County Viking Valley Farm; Gerald, Duron, and Darin Kandiyohi County Carlson Dairy, LLP McLeod County Duane and Mary Nelson Mower County Gene Anderson Dairy Farm Murray County Bill and Merri Post Family & Ben and Connie Post Family Red Lake County Roger and Ja-nel Walter Family

Rock County The ChristiansFamily Farm Scott County Casey Acres, Inc. Stearns County Dan and JoleneSchlangen Swift County Kevin VoorheesFamily Todd County Lunemann FamilysTwin Eagle Wabasha County Hyde Park Hol-steins Wadena County Mertens FamilyDairy Farm Winona County Dave and KristiTveten Family Wright County Valley View Dair;Dan and Erica & Luke and Elizabeth Elsenpeter

Other than family ownership, there is no standard way to describe Minnesotafamily farms. These are entrepreneurs who build unique businesses based on their land and potential markets. They nd opportunities, apply technology and developthe skills needed to become successful. Many focus on the workhorses of Min-nesota agriculturecorn, soybeans, wheat, dairy, pork, beef, poultry, sheep, sugarbeets and sun owers. Others branch into specialized pursuits and produce apples, navy beans, maple syrup, honey, deer, tomatoes, landscape trees or organic crops. The ways that Minnesota family farms create jobs is just as varied as the landscapeof our state. The business plans and economic impact of these family farms are only partof the story. Farm families are the main drivers improving the fabric of many ruralcommunities. They are the ones who invest time in making a difference by serving on township boards, hospital boards, school boards and church councils. Despite all the good they do, farm families often do not receive the recognitionthey deserve. The University of Minnesota started the Farm Family of the Year program some 30 years ago to recognize successful farm families for their impacton our economy and rural communities. This year, families from 76 Minnesota counties will be recognized for theircontributions to agriculture, our economy and rural communities at an August 9 ceremony at Farmfest, the states largest farm gathering. The University of Min-nesota is proud to lead this effort to recognize the contributions of farm families.

ANKENY, Iowa When the Iowa State Fair opens Thursday in Des Moines, it will be hard not to notice the presence of Iowas dairy farmers. From the crowning of their new dairy princess the night before the fair opens, to the popular concessions they oper-ate in two locations, to a handful of educational dis-plays and presentations, its clear the dairy commu-nity sees the State Fair as an opportunity to connect with its consumers. To kick things off, Midwest Dairy Association, which puts together the fairs activi-ties on behalf of dairy farmers, is participating in the fairs Grand Opening ceremony on Thurs., Aug. 9, by bringing former National Football League wide re-ceiver Eddie Kennison and Kansas City Chiefs mas-cot KC Wolf in for at Touchdown Dance competition. The event, at 7:15 a.m., highlights Fuel Up to Play 60, the National Dairy Councils partnership with the NFL to ght childhood obesity.Throughout the fair, the organizations concession at the Cattle Barn and in the Agriculture Building offers hand-dipped malts, ice cream and milk. Midwest Dairy is also featuring six dairy farmers in photo displays at the Boulevard of Breeds in the dairy barn. The six are: Brown Swiss Denise and Barb Mashek, Calm-ar; Holstein Dan and Rick Reuter, Peosta; Guernsey Don and Glenda Eilers, Scotch Grove; Jersey Joe, Eric and Stuart Lyon, Toledo; Ayrshire Jim and Sharon Tentinger, Remsen; and Milking Shorthorn Larry Landsgard, Saint Olaf. In the Animal Learning Center, Midwest Dairys display includes a cow waterbed and a Bou-Matic milking machine demonstration, showing how a cow might spend her day. An AgTivities presenta-tion there allows kids to color, and play Jeopardy and other games. A Thank A Farmer presentation will also take place three times daily on the build-ings stage. Other educational offerings are part of a multi-commodity arrangement in the Agriculture Building, and Midwest Dairy helps to sponsor the Little Hands on the Farm area and the Blue Ribbon Kids Club.Concrete ice cream cones standing 3 feet high are located around the grounds, painted by various groups and companies. Midwest Dairys cone is shaped like a barn with a cow stepping through the cone. A QR code on it can be scanned to visit dairy-makessense.com . Midwest Dairy is also part of the Coalition to Support Iowas Farmers, which is using Farmer Phil as a new way to engage visitors about the importance of livestock. Fair-goers can pick up a free fan featuring Farmer Phil and Iowa farm facts in the Avenue of Breeds in the northwest corner of the Swine Barn daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., taking it on a tour of their ad-ventures around the fair, snapping a picture and post-ing their experience on Facebook at facebook.com/supportfarmers or tweeting them with hashtag #FarmerPhil. The Iowa Food and Family Project also includes Midwest Dairy, and their Back to the Farmer sculpture, made entirely out of canned food items, will be featured in the Varied Industries Building. After the Fair, the canned goods will be donated to food banks through-out the state.
