Biografie Biography

Martin Völlinger wurde 1977 in Fulda (D) geboren. Zunächst Auto- didakt, studierte er Kirchenmusik, Gesang, Dirigieren und Improvisation in Regensburg sowie in Zürich und besuchte zahlreiche internationale Meisterkurse. Er war Preisträger beim 1. Bayreuth-Regensburger Chorlei-tungswettbewerb und Finalist beim Internationalen Orgelimprovisations-wettbewerb Stift Schlägl (Österreich).

Schon während des Studiums ar-beitete er als Chorleiter, Stimmbildner und Orgellehrer bei den Regensbur-ger Domspatzen und als Assistent des Domorganisten. Nach dem Studium folgte er dem Ruf eines kroatischen Bischofs, in seinem neugegründeten Bistum die Kathedralmusik bzw. Kir-chenmusik in der Region aufzubauen.

Seit August 2007 arbeitet Völlinger als Chorleiter/Stimmbildner bei den Luzerner Sängerknaben, wo er als Leiter des Herrenensembles der Sängerknaben (jüngster Männerchor der Schweiz) große Erfolge fei-ert. Er lebt mit seiner Familie in Ebikon bei Luzern. Neben seiner Arbeit bei den Luzerner Sängerknaben ist er Organist in Steinhausen und Baar (Kanton Zug).Martin Völlinger ist ein vielseitiger Musiker und Grenzgänger. Seine zunehmend freischaffende kom-positorische Tätigkeit spiegelt sich in zahlreichen Auf-tragskompositionen, u.a. für das Händel-Festival Lu-zern 2009 (Oratorium Inspired – Trauermusik d-Moll in Gedenken verstorbener Kinder aus Religionskon-flikten) oder für das Vokalensemble Vocale Neuburg aus Österreich (Humorvolle Kantate Der Ohrwurm). Im Dezember 2011 wurde seine Auftragskantate Schweizerreise zum Tag der internationalen Freiwilli-gentätigkeit 2011 in der SWISS CHRISTMAS Zeltstadt Zürich erfolgreich uraufgeführt. Im März 2012 erleb-te sein Musical „Gimmu di butzi“ für die Singschule „cantiamo“ Oberwallis einen grandiosen Publikums-erfolg. Dieses Projekt wurde u.a. ausgezeichnet mit dem Lily Waeckerlin-Preis für Jugend&Musik 2011 der Stiftung ACCENTUS.

Völlinger richtet seine Musik direkt an den Men-schen und deren Gefühle, im Spannungsfeld zwi-schen Tradition und Moderne und kennt keine Berüh-rungsängste zu Pop, Jazz und World Music. Verstärkt wendet sich Martin Völlinger dem Musiktheater zu und sucht nach neuen Ideen und Formen, angesiedelt zwischen Oper, Singspiel und Musical. Tätigkeiten als Seminarleiter und Referent runden seine musikalische Arbeit ab.

Martin Völlinger was born in Fulda, Germany in 1977. Initially self-taught, he studied church music, voice, con-ducting and improvisation in Regens-burg as well as in Zurich and atten-ded numerous international music courses. He was a prize winner at the first Bayreuth-Regensburg Choral Direction Competition and was a finalist at the International Organ Improvisation Competition at Schlägl Monastery in Austria.

He worked as a choral director, voice coach and organ teacher with the Regensburg Domspatzen and as an assistant to the cathedral orga-nist already during his studies. After his studies he answered the call of a Croatian bishop to establish the

cathedral music, that is, the church music in the regi-on of his newly founded bishopric.

Since 2007 Völlinger has been working as the cho-ral director and voice teacher with the Lucerne Boys’ Choir where he has celebrated astounding success as the director of the Men’s Ensemble of the Boys’ Choir (the youngest men’s choir in Switzerland). He now lives with his family in Ebikon, near Lucerne. Besides his work with the Lucerne Boys’ Choir, he is the or-ganist in Steinhausen and Baar in the Canton of Zug.Martin Völlinger is a versatile musician and crossover artist. His increasingly freelance compositorial activi-ties are reflected in numerous commissioned works, including the oratorio Inspired – Trauermusik d-Moll (Inspired - Mourning Music in D minor) for the Handel-Festival-Lucerne 2009 in memory of children killed in religious conflicts as well as a humorous cantata Der Ohrwurm (The Earworm) for the Austrian vocal en-semble Vocale Neuburg. In December 2011 his com-missioned cantata Schweizerreise (Swiss Journey) was successfully world-premièred for the International Voluntary Service Day 2011 in the SWISS CHRISTMAS tent city in Zürich. In March 2012 his musical “Gimmu di butzi” for the singing school “cantiamo” in Oberwallis was a huge success with the public. This project was awarded the Lily Waeckerlin Prize for Youth&Music 2011 by the ACCENTUS foundation.

Völlinger aims his music directly at people and their feelings, between traditional and modern music and shows no reservation in the use of pop, jazz and world music. Increasingly, he has turned his attention to music theater and is always looking for new ideas and forms situated between opera, musical comedy and the musical. His musical work is rounded out by his activity as a seminar instructor and consultant.
