THE HISTORY

First published in the 1830s, Audubon's iconic and timeless Birds of America is comprised of 435 hand-colored engravings. Audubon’s original watercolors were meticulously translated to engraving plates to produce the elephant-folio-sized publication. The renowned London engraver Robert Havell exclusively produced the original engravings - finalizing each with hand-colored detail per Audubon’s specifications. The entire collection of 435 original watercolors and each respective engraving plate took twelve years (1825-1838) to complete. The Field Museum Edition of Audubon's Fifty Best is the first and only reproduction to precisely replicate the quality and detail of the original Birds of America. Following a selective process, Archival Imaging was commissioned to produce the limited edition prints, and Oppenheimer Gallery was chosen as the publisher/dealer. Under the contractual agreement with the Chicago Field Museum, Archival Imaging (a Chicago-based fine art printing company owned by the Van Baerle family) kept a set of official Printer’s Proofs to serve as the Master Set from which to base any future prints. This set has remained in the Van Baerle family since its production.
