A celebration of love, laughter, family, and friendship, this show will have the audience singing out loud and dancing in the aisles.

THE STORY

Numerous people are descending on a small Greek island as Sophie’s dreams are about to come true when she finally marries her boyfriend, Sky. Sophie has fantasies of the perfect wedding, which include her father walking her down the aisle and giving her away. The problem? She doesn’t know who her father is!

Sophie’s mother Donna, the former lead singer of “Donna and the Dynamos” and owner of the island’s taverna (which is currently buzzing with wedding guests), refuses to talk about the past, so Sophie decides to take matters into her own hands.

Sneaking a look at her mother’s old diaries, Sophie discovers three possible fathers: architect Sam, adventurer Bill, and banker Harry, none of whom Donna has seen in over 20 years. Pretending to be Donna, Sophie secretly invites all three to the wedding convinced that she will know her father when she sees him. But it may not be as clear as she thinks...

Meanwhile, the men (who didn’t know each other before arriving on the island) quickly surmise why they were invited to the wedding, and each is confident that they are Sophie’s father. Complications ensue, and Sophie’s and Sky’s wedding (and relationship) may be jeopardised. While they are finding what is in their hearts, others discover the course of true love.

Told through the legendary music of ABBA, “Mamma Mia!” has become a worldwide sensation that has audiences everywhere dancing and singing. The story-telling magic of the timeless songs propels this enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship. Non-stop laughs and explosive dance numbers combine to make “Mamma Mia!” a guaranteed audience pleaser.

All auditions will take place at the Taree Arts Council Shed in Flametree Close, Taree.

Each audition will consist of a group dance routine, dialogue readings for each

character, and individual (private) singing of the prepared songs as listed for your

chosen character. [audition songs may not need to be heard in full ]

ENSEMBLE (7:00pm):

You must be at least 15 years old in 2021 to be part of the cast of “Mamma Mia!”.

Ensemble members portray Islanders, workers, tourists, and wedding guests. We

will be looking for strong, energetic, and happy characters, who sing and move with

exuberance and enthusiasm.

The audition song will be “Dancing Queen ” in the key of A.

Please be familiar with this song. You will also take part in a group dance routine.

SPECIALISED DANCERS:

As part of the Ensemble, you will tackle more difficult choreography.

Alternative rehearsal times may become necessary.

Donna’s headstrong 20 year old daughter, Sophie is determined to find romance and have what her mother never had - a traditional wedding and a father to walk her down the aisle. Young, bright, and energetic, she has lived all her life on the island and is ready to leave.

The owner of the taverna on the island, Donna is Sophie’s mother. Attractive and free-spirited, she is the former lead singer of “Donna and the Dynamos”. Honest, straight, hard-working, and feisty. Delivers some of the biggest solos in the show. English background.

Song: “The Winner Takes It All ” in F and “Money, Money, Money ” in C minor

One of Sophie’s potential fathers and a wealthy architect. Sam has regretted leaving Donna all his life and now finds himself divorced and back in her presence. He is straight laced, confident, and composed. At times, he is perhaps a little overbearing, but he is determined not to mess up the second chance he has been given. A very true and honest character. American.

Song: “Knowing Me, Knowing You ” in A

Another of Sophie’s potential fathers. A well-known travel writer, Bill has visited the far reaches of the Earth but never found what he is really looking for. A real character, Bill has generally avoided the complexities of a relationship and now wonders if it is too late. Lots of comedy and a golden heart within. Australian.

Another of Sophie’s potential fathers and now a respected London banker. A head-banging, partying musician in his youth, he is quirky, and something of a nostalgic romantic. A nice guy, he is determined to make up for some past regrets. English.

Sophie’s fiancé; a former stockbroker who left London and moved to Greece. He works for Donna in the taverna. He is perhaps too eager to please and has not yet found all the answers he had hoped for on the island. English.

One of Donna’s oldest and best friends. Tanya has married three millionaires. Rich, wild, fun-loving, and a big character. She flirts mercilessly with young men and is happy to play but not to stick around. English (think Patsy in “Absolutely Fabulous”).

Song: “Does Your Mother Know” in B♭♭

Donna’s friend and former member of “The Dynamos”. Unmarried, free-spirited, and a renowned author of cookbooks. A character who has developed a confident, funny, and self-deprecating exterior which masks her inner vulnerability. English.

Song: “Take A Chance On Me” in B♭

Sophie’s friends who have travelled to the island for the wedding. A supporting double-act of bubbly, bridesmaid-y excitement.

A flirty waiter at the taverna who has a brief fling with Tanya. Energetic, and fun-loving, he makes up a double-act with Eddie.

A waiter, boatman, and handyman at the Taverna. The other half of the double-act with Pepper.

In order to bring the unique sound of ABBA alive, music is especially written for some

experienced, reliable singers who will sing from a booth in the wings. It is essential to have the

ability to harmonise well and to read music. No dancing is required!

This is a community theatre production and as such your participation is on a voluntary basis. The production is to be rehearsed and performed in arenas which are deemed non-smoking.
