ABOUT “DAMN YANKEES“

Based on the novel The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant by Douglass Wallop, DAMN YANKEES hits it out of the park! The winning score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, and a devilish book by George Abbott, have made this sporty musical comedy a true American classic.

Middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd trades his soul to the Devil (Mr. Applegate) for a chance to lead his favorite team (the Washington Senators) to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees. As young baseball sensation Joe Hardy, he transforms the hapless Senators into a winning team, only to realize the true worth of the life that he’s left behind.

The original Broadway production of DAMN YANKEES ran for 1,019 performances, and won seven Tony Awards including Best Musical. The 1994 Broadway revival ran for was nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Revival and Best Choreography.

BWTC’s production of DAMN YANKEES will be directed by Charlie Leonad, with musical direction by Kirsten Thayer and choreography by Danielle Nelson

AUDITIONS & CASTING

Auditions for Blue Water Theatre Company’s production of DAMN YANKEES are open to all actors who are currently students in grades 6 through 12 (high school and middle school). Actors who wish to audition should show up to their choice of one of the following three audition times:

Monday, March 6 from 7:00-9:30pmTuesday, March 7 from 7:00-9:30pmThursday, March 9 from 7:00-9:30pm

Please be on time and be prepared to stay for the entire audition session. Note that parents and other guests are not allowed in the studio while the auditions are taking place.

Auditions will be held at Blue Water Theatre Company’s studio in the lower level of the Wayzata Home Center (1250 East Wayzata Boulevard).

Actors do not need to prepare any audition material in advance. Please, however, come to the audition with a completed and signed “Actor Information Sheet” and “Rehearsal Conflict Sheet” to turn in. You will find both of these forms at the end of this packet. Please note that a parent signature is required in order to be considered for the cast.

Callback auditions for DAMN YANKEES will take placefrom 1:00-3:30 on Sunday, March 12.

A list of the actors needed at callbacks will be posted on the audition page of the Blue Water web site at around noon on Friday, March 10.

The final cast list will be posted on the audition page of theBlue Water web site at around 4:00pm on Tuesday, March 14.

We intend to cast approximately 45 actors in DAMN YANKEES. Depending on the number of actors who audition, cuts may be necessary.

REHEARSALS & ATTENDANCE EXPECTATIONS

Rehearsals for DAMN YANKEES will begin on Monday, March 20 with a full-cast meeting and read-through. Regular rehearsals will generally be held on the following schedule.

Mondays from 7:00-9:30Tuesdays from 7:00-9:30Thursdays from 7:00-9:30Saturdays from 9:00-4:00

In an effort to be respectful of our actors’ time, we do not call every actor to every rehearsal. A schedule will be emailed to the cast each Sunday afternoon detailing the upcoming week’s rehearsal schedule.

We do expect our actors to be at every rehearsal for which they have been called, unless proper notification has been given to the director prior to the weekly schedule being completed and posted. While we recognize that emergency conflicts do arise, the directing team reserves the right to deal with situations appropriately if attendance becomes a major issue.

At the beginning of our run, all regular rehearsals will be held at Blue Water’s current studio in the lower level of the Wayzata Home Center (1250 East Wayzata Boulevard). Beginning on Saturday, April 29, regular rehearsals will likely be held in our new theatre, located in the current Unitarian Universalist Church of Minnetonka (605 Rice Street East, Wayzata).

Parents should note that we generally take an hour lunch break on Saturdays (usually from 12:00-1:00). Unless parents specifically email Charlie Leonard (the director) to tell him otherwise, it is assumed that students have permission to leave Blue Water (unsupervised) for lunch. Note that, if they do leave campus, Blue Water is not responsible for your kids during this time. Please discuss this with your son or daughter, and bring any concerns to Charlie's attention.

DRESS/TECH REHEARSALS & PERFORMANCES

We will have four dress/tech rehearsals and three performances, at which attendance is mandatory. It is expected that all cast members will clear their schedules for these dates and times. The only acceptable conflicts on these days are those that the directors are told about on your audition forms.

Saturday, June 10 from 9:00-4:00 (dress/tech rehearsal)Monday, June 12 from 4:00-9:30 (dress/tech rehearsal)Tuesday, June 13 from 4:00-9:30 (dress/tech rehearsal)Wednesday, June 14 from 4:00-9:30 (dress/tech rehearsal)Thursday, June 15 from 5:00-10:30 (performance @ 7:00pm)Friday, June 16 from 5:00-10:30 (performance @ 7:00pm)Saturday, June 17 from 5:00-midnight (performance @ 7:00pm; Strike)

All dress/tech rehearsals and performances will take place at Eisenhower Community Center in Hopkins (1001 Highway 7).

SETS/COSTUMES/PROPS/PUBLICITY

In order to support the show and strengthen the BWTC community, each member of the cast is expected to involve themselves in one (or more) of the following areas: sets, costumes, props, and publicity. Each cast member will commit to spending a minimum of three hours working to support their chosen area(s).

We will be seeking parent support in these areas as well, in addition to needing parent help at the performances with things such as tickets and concessions. Look for info about that once the show has been cast.

PRODUCTION FEE

The production fee for a student actor to take part in DAMN YANKEES is $355. This fee helps cover our show licensing, theatre rental, rehearsal studio rental, set/prop/costume needs, insurance, and staffing.

The registration fee is due at the first rehearsal (Monday, March 20), unless special arrangements have been made with us in advance. Refunds are not available. If a student drops out of the production, the registration fee will be considered a donation to Blue Water Theatre Company.

Financial assistance is available for those who can demonstrate need. If you would like more information, please contact BWTC’s office manager Sarah Irwin ([email protected]). All requests will be kept confidential.

BWTC COMMUNICATION POLICY

BWTC parents are encouraged to read the BWTC Communication Policy, which can be found on a tab on the “Auditions” page of our web site. As an organization that deals almost exclusively with teenagers — and with recognition and respect to one of our organizational values of youth empowerment — it is important (especially) for potential new families to understand the way in which the BWTC community communicates with each other. Please contact Charlie Leonard if you have any questions or concerns.

REHEARSAL CONFLICT SHEETName ___________________________________________________________________________________

Please list all known rehearsal conflicts clearly on the lines below. Include any event (school, travel, personal, religious, or otherwise) that would keep you from attending the scheduled rehearsal on any given day. Note that we do not have any scheduled “vacation” days for spring breaks, as your schools don’t all break at the same time. So please indicate if you have plans to leave town.

PLEASE be extra careful when filling out the conflict sheet with regards to end-of-the-year activities. Nearly every single one of you will have a choir/band/orchestra concert this spring. Older high school kids may have Prom. If you are a senior, there are things such as award/recognition nights and graduation rehearsals and ceremonies that may not be on your radar right now, but they do exist. Please be careful about looking ahead and giving us all the information we need.
