Your system’s sonic success relies on the ability of your source components. Mislay a vital element or muddle crucial instrumental cues and you will restrict your system’s musicality, crippling its ability to deliver the pace, rhythm and timing we deem so fundamental to enjoyable listening.

40bit Floating Point Filter

The digital filter in the NDS is mathematically precise enough to count 232 x 2256 seconds (that’s a 5 followed by 86 zeros). In other words, it’s powerful enough to count every second since the universe began many times over with pin-point accuracy.

This level of precision is essential in order to keep filter arithmetic noise below – 144dB (the theoretical signal-to-noise ratio of 24bit PCM audio) at all times for best sound quality.

No-compromise performanceThe electronic brain of the NDS is a 40bit SHARC Digital Signal Processor (DSP), the most powerful to be fitted to any Naim component so far. It’s capable of performing a staggering billion calculations per second. By monitoring the flow of data through the NDS’ buffers and adjusting the clocks accordingly, it provides jitter-free accuracy and optimum performance whatever the relative quality of the music being played. Yet, for all its complexity, the NDS is easy to use: our bespoke control software ensures seamless compatibility with all your digital devices. You’ll find the NDS simple to live with and an absolute delight to listen to.

Revolution meets evolutionWhile its concept is revolutionary, much of the NDS represents an evolution of classic Naim themes. Its internal architecture is separated into carefully screened digital and analogue pathways, each mounted on suspended brass plates to minimise resonance and vibration. Sound critical boards and components are further isolated by their own shields, reducing interference within the chassis to the absolute minimum. Finally, the NDS has no internal power supply, ensuring optimum performance by isolating its sensitive electronics from electromagnetic and mechanical interference.

Our reference network player, the NDS, is an audiophile-quality music source, every bit the sonic equal of the very finest high-end CD players and turntables. Whether you’re browsing your digitally stored music collection, exploring tens of thousands of internet radio stations or indulging in a high-resolution 24bit/192kHz download, the NDS delivers unrivalled performance.

The ND5 XS is our introduction to network music streaming, but loses none of the flexibility or functionality of its illustrious siblings. Wherever you choose to store your music, from an iPhone music library through to a network-stored hard-drive full of 24bit/192kHz files, the ND5 XS will deliver sparkling results.

Styled to match the rest of our XS Series range, the NAT05 XS draws on a rich heritage of performance-orientated tuner design. Its layout and specification exemplify the purity of purpose we have been refining for over 25 years. At the heart of the NAT05 XS lies the high-performance ALPS tuner head. When teamed with a good-quality roof aerial, it ensures that our latest tuner ranks among the world’s best-sounding radio sources. The clean, articulate and effortlessly musical presentation of the NAT05 XS does full justice to any quality hi-fi system.

The world’s first network music player aimed at audiophiles, the NDX remains an exceptional streaming solution, surpassed only by the NDS. Its performance-oriented design retains the single-component convenience of the ND5 XS, but includes a significantly improved power supply with a custom-designed toroidal transformer plus four separate windings for its digital, DSP, clock and analogue output stages.

A Heritage in FM

We have a rich history in radio. One of our very first products, the NAM 502 loudspeaker, was specifically designed for use by then start-up station Capital Radio in 1973. It was a natural progression for us to design tuners that would capture and preserve every nuance of the medium. The NAT 101 of 1986 (pictured left) is an early example. What earned these tuners such a loyal following was the simplicity of design and the quality of sound – traits that put their successors in good stead to lead the high-end market all the way up to the current NAT05 XS.

Hard Disk Player/ServersRadical and Traditional

“The HDX is the result of several years of research into bringing together the worlds of computing and high-fidelity audio. During development our electronic, mechanical and software engineering teams found inspiration in applying traditional Naim principles alongside completely new technologies. Optical isolation chips, a bit-perfect ripping engine and unique-to-Naim software optimised for sound quality are just a few of these innovations.”

Simple brilliance Ripping a CD is easy, but ripping it so that it precisely matches the quality of the original is far more complex. Such fastidious attention to digital detail is key to the HDX’s ability: it repeatedly re-reads every CD inserted into its disc mechanism until it can deliver a bit-perfect copy of the original performance.

Accurate data is of little use if it’s handled carelessly, but the HDX is unusually particular about storing your music. Its 2TB (terabyte) hard disk has space enough to support up to 2,400 CDs in uncompressed quality. It will also automatically back up your music to an attached storage device if you wish. Naim’s Extended Music Database ensures every disc you insert will be correctly identified, tagged and catalogued too – so browsing your collection will be almost as enjoyable as listening to it.

Choice and controlThe HDX supports an extraordinarily wide range of listening options. Access and enjoy your ripped CDs, or high-resolution music (up to 24bit/192kHz) stored elsewhere on your network, easily from the front-panel colour touch-screen and remote control, or from the iOS n-Serve control app complete with album art and extended metadata. For choice, the vTuner 5* star internet radio service provides tens of thousands of internet radio stations to explore. And if you get stuck, the Naim’s Choice menu feature automatically highlights some of our favourites for you. The HDX does it all – and it does it all brilliantly.

The HDX delivers convenience without compromise. The world’s first audiophile hard disk music player, it was also our first step into digital music delivery – and today, several years after its launch, it still sets the performance standards in its class. Invest in an HDX and you’re buying more than just a single point of access for your digitally stored music collection. It can operate as a high-performance hub for your whole home, streaming the songs you love into any room equipped with a compatible Naim device. Sound quality, whatever format is being replayed and wherever it is being accessed - is never less than absolute. We’d accept nothing less.

Features:• Bit-perfect CD ripping to internal 2TB hard disk,

If the HDX is the pinnacle of our digital knowledge, the UnitiServe represents the distilled essence of our experience. It delivers the fundamentals of the HDX’s high-end music server technology in a compact, half-width enclosure. Like the HDX it offers bit-perfect ripping, the ability to serve music to a wide range of compatible devices, control via the n-Serve iOS app and, of course, all the performance for which our network-connected products are widely famed.

The UnitiServe-SSD mirrors the HDX-SSD: it’s a quiet, hard disk-free server aimed at those with massive music collections or extensive libraries of pre-ripped content. Team it with the Naim DAC or a digitally-equipped amplifier and it can become a directly accessible source for all your digital music. Alternatively it can stream to a wide range of UPnP-certified devices over your network.

Using our hard disk player/servers is simple. Insert your CD into the front panel mechanism and we’ll take over so you can let listening take centre stage.

Stream in Four Steps

RipOur unique ripping engine will create bit-perfect copies of your CD collection and make them available either for local playback or to other devices on the home network.

1StoreBoth the HDX and the UnitiServe are equipped with 2TB hard drives: enough space for 2,400 uncompressed albums. 2

CatalogueAll ripped and downloaded music will be categorised using Naim’s cataloguing software. Extended metadata and album art is then displayed on the n-Serve and n-Stream iOS apps.

3PlayChoose to incorporate your server into a separates system for local playback or serve music over your home network to any Naim streaming product in your home. 4

If you already own a large digitally stored music collection or plan to rip more than the 2,400-CD capacity of a regular HDX, consider the HDX-SSD. It offers all the functionality of the HDX but substitutes its standard 2TB internal hard disk for a 16GB solid-state drive, sufficient to ensure smooth and fast browsing of your content. Your music collection can then reside on an external network-attached-storage device, or NAS, allowing access to as much storage as your budget or needs could ever reasonably require.

Features:• 16GB Single-Level Cell enterprise drive for

seamless operation and negligible noise

• Bit-perfect CD ripping for maximum performance

• Ultra-quiet hard disk-free design, perfect for low-noise-threshold use in audiophile listening rooms

• vTuner 5* full-service internet radio

All-in-one Players

Digital versatilitySuperUniti is an integrated wireless UPnP network stream player, USB audio player, iPod dock, internet radio, DAB/FM radio, ten input digital and analogue preamplifier, digital to analogue converter and stereo 80W power amplifier. It forgoes the CD player offered by the NaimUniti 2 to put all of its efforts into being the best network streaming all-in-one it can be - focus you’ll hear in every note, riff and chorus.

Hybrid technologyThe SuperUniti’s amplifier is derived from our reference integrated the SUPERNAIT 2. Its digital hardware is drawn from the NDX network player and its 24bit/192kHz capable DAC uses the same data-buffering jitter removal process as the Naim DAC. Along with drawing from the best existing Naim technologies, SuperUniti introduces a new technology of its own. Behind the traditional looking volume dial lies an advanced new control technology providing noise-free digital volume adjustment that varies its operating characteristic depending on how quickly the volume knob is turned. All this innovation offers you the simplicity of a one box solution with the performance the Naim badge guarantees.

There is an unwritten rule in high-end audio that states audiophile performance levels can only be achieved through separates. By combining technologies pioneered by reference products such as the NDX and SUPERNAIT 2 and adding a few innovations of its own, the SuperUniti demonstrates just how far our research has taken us with all-in-one sound quality. It’s proof that sometimes, rules are made to be broken.

UPnP Explained

UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) is an open network standard that enables audio servers and players connected to the same network to communicate automatically. With a UnitiServe and one or more Naim streaming products (or alternative UPnP-compliant players) UPnP enables the players to automatically display shared music files found on the network or stored on the UnitiServe’s internal hard disk. It works invisibly in the background to make the connection between server and player seamless.

The Naim Aesthetic

“When I approach the design of any piece of Naim equipment I work hard with the product engineers to fully understand the engineering brief. In the case of the CD555 I felt it really needed to stand out as something truly special whilst maintaining the sophisticated yet understated aesthetic that Naim is renowned for. Every last millimetre of the casework had to exude class whilst creating an environment that would allow the electronics to work at their very best. The finished product has become one of the hallmarks of Naim quality and performance, and I’m proud to have been a part of that journey.”

CD555

Focus is everythingThis zero-compromise quality demands single-minded engineering. The CD555 ignores those disc formats you don’t need. It avoids features that don’t contribute to its performance. It represents not a radical step into the unknown, but the ultimate expression of everything we’ve learned. So it uses a top-loading transport mechanism, a heavyweight brass sub-chassis and a low-resonance CD clamp, avoiding the vibration-induced errors that afflict conventional CD mechanisms. Its digital-to-analogue converter circuitry is shielded by a dedicated enclosure, ensuring superior isolation from electric and magnetic fields. Wiring alone takes six hours of dedicated craftsmanship, while many of its core components are hand-selected to ensure that only the very best of each batch make their way into each player. And as with many Naim products, its power supply components are housed in an entirely separate unit, the 555 PS.

The CD555 is our reference CD player, the finest we have ever made. It’s a statement of our engineering excellence, a showcase for our core beliefs. Of course, it’s a fast, detailed and dynamic-sounding performer: anything less would be fundamentally at odds with who we are and what we do. But more than any one particular aspect of its presentation, the CD555’s genius is the way it brings each disparate strand of your music together into one fluid, natural and involving performance. This, we believe, is how hi-fi should sound.

Radial Arc

During the development of our first CD players we discovered that the loading mechanism was instrumental to achieving highest sound quality. With this in mind we designed our ergonomically pleasing and unique radial arc disc tray. It provides a rigid and stable mounting for the CD and sits on an independent suspension to dissipate unwanted vibration and energy. Designing our own loader also brought other advantages: it meant we could control important factors such as the reflectivity of the drawer surface, which also has a significant effect on the sound.

Even our entry-level players benefit from the research and technology that goes into our reference products. Our new CD5si features an improved version of our unique resonance-busting radial arc CD tray, plus an upgraded laser assembly. It even includes a DAC similar to that found in our premium NDX network player. What hasn’t changed is the power of this slimline player to entertain.

Designed well, a product should have many years of useful life. The original Naim CDX debuted in 1999, and the revised CDX2 shares plenty of design DNA with its predecessor. Its radial arc disc tray is classic Naim. It’s different from the motorised assemblies used by other players, but better too, with superior isolation and resistance to resonance. In its latest incarnation, the CDX2 has incorporated some useful new enhancements, including a switchable digital output and extra low-noise clock regulation. After all, being able to do something well shouldn’t stop you from trying to do it better.

Step up to the CD5 XS and you’ll gain some of the ability of our even better CDX2. The CD5 XS shares certain key components with its bigger brother, including its advanced, low-resonance radial arc disc tray and transport suspension. As our premium entry-level player, the CD5 XS doesn’t just sound better than our CD5si: it also gives you more scope for growth. You can make its sound even more expressive by adding our FlatCap XS power supply component. Alternatively, you can use its transformer-coupled digital output to upgrade it with our external DAC.

Digital to Analogue Converters

Capable of partnering and upgrading a wide range of Naim products, the DAC has more in common with our CD players than with any conventional DAC. Its Burr-Brown converter chips, for instance, are also found in our flagship CD555 CD player. The DAC overcomes the jitter inherent in standard digital connections by reading data independent of its timing signal. Its digital filtering, based on a 40bit floating-point SHARC DSP chip running unique Naim code, sets new standards in its class.

If the DAC’s music performance is extreme, its flexibility is just as remarkable. With eight S/PDIF and two USB inputs, it’s adaptable to any system configuration and can grow to meet any need.

Our newest DAC is perfectly optimised for modern digital listening. It features an asynchronous USB input – ideal for getting stunning sound quality from your computer.

DAC-V1’s single-ended class-A headphone amplifier affords it added versatility. The output stages of this amplifier are kept as pure as possible, ensuring outstanding sound quality for headphone listening. The DAC-V1’s compact size makes it perfectly suited as a desktop companion to your Mac or PC, but its exceptional musicality means it will complement our standard-width hi-fi components just as well. Combine it with our UnitiServe hard disk music server and its matching NAP 100 power amplifier and you’ll create a stunning hi-fi system from just three compact boxes.

Features:• Eight S/PDIF inputs for digital sources like games

consoles, set top boxes and hard disk servers

• Two USB inputs (one front, one rear)

• 40bit SHARC DSP chip handling filtering and oversampling

• Plays audio files at up to 24bit/768kHz resolution

• Front-panel input controls adapt to become playback controls when iOS or USB devices are connected

u Performance upgradable with external XP5 XS, XPS or 555 PS power supply (see pages 49-51)

Integrated Amplifiers The Maverick

The history of our integrated amplifiers stretches back to 1983 with the introduction of the original NAIT. It was a quirky design, in line with Naim’s out-of-the-mainstream status. When the press enquired how many watts it had, for example, Naim’s founder, Julian Vereker, delighted in answering with an abrupt “enough”. This spirit is alive and well today in our new range of integrated amplifiers, which use new technologies to enhance the fundamental qualities of pace, rhythm and timing pioneered by their predecessors.

Analogue focusSUPERNAIT 2 combines an 80W power amplifier with six individually decoupled input sockets and borrows advanced technology from Naim’s flagship preamplifier, the NAC 552. In employing the latest Naim DR (Discrete Regulator) circuits in its power supply, it sits right at the forefront of Naim amplifier technology.

Modern yet classicFor personal listening SUPERNAIT 2 makes use of the single-ended class-A headphone amplifier pioneered by the DAC-V1. Its custom-designed toroidal transformer features seven separate windings, and can be further upgraded with one of our external FlatCap XS, HiCap or SuperCap power supplies. Even the analogue delights of vinyl are yours to explore: simply add a StageLine or SuperLine phono stage.

It’s been almost 30 years since we designed our first integrated amplifier: time enough to define and refine the technical ingredients essential to high-end performance. Our reference quality SUPERNAIT 2 represents the pinnacle of this accumulated knowledge. It is both the most sophisticated integrated amplifier we’ve ever created and a classic Naim product, shot through with the soul of the original, iconic NAIT.

The NAIT 5si is our 60W per channel introduction to high-performance integrated amplification. Another Naim amplifier that can claim a common heritage with our classic NAIT model, the NAIT 5si will get straight to the heart of your music. It engages even the most complex rhythms and demanding dynamics with all the grip and authority you would expect from us. Its clever AV bypass mode, which facilitates an easy co-existence of otherwise distinct AV and hi-fi systems, simply adds to its appeal.

The NAIT XS 2 offers much of the performance of our reference quality SUPERNAIT 2 in a simpler, slimmer package combining a 70W power amplifier with six analogue inputs. Its high-performance preamplifier stage is as transparent as you would expect from a Naim amplifier, and it also shares the single-ended class-A headphone output of its larger sibling. The NAIT XS 2 can also be upgraded as required, offering support for external power supplies, power amplifiers and phono stages.

NAIT 5si NAIT XS 2

The term NAIT doesn’t just describe a product range, it defines a philosophy; a way of thinking born with the original NAIT of 1983. It says you can keep your inflated power outputs; we value simplicity and focus. It demands that we attend to every detail in design. And it’s why all of our creations meet their final judgement in the listening room, not in the lab. The NAIT 5si, NAIT XS 2 and SUPERNAIT 2 integrated amplifiers are the next evolution of this philosophy.

PreamplifiersHand-Matched Components

In designing our amplifiers we found that matching the characteristics of certain sound critical through-hole components for each channel can greatly improve sound quality. For example, batches of resistors typically come matched to within a 5% margin of error. Through listening tests we found that if the resistance of the left and right channels are matched to closer than 0.5% sound is significantly improved. Following this discovery a bespoke production procedure was conceived to help us match resistors by hand.

Performance without limitsLike every component in our flagship 500 Series range, the NAC 552 has been developed without compromise or constraint. Its two-box design, which houses the power supply components in a separate enclosure to better control electromagnetic interference, is classically Naim. By contrast, the power supply itself employs radically new thinking, including a new split-rail configuration that almost entirely eliminates power supply noise in the signal earth.

Complete controlAs thorough as its engineering is, the NAC 552 still finds scope for convenience. It provides for easy connection to our off-board SuperLine phono preamplifier or to an AV system, and its mix of RCA and performance-oriented DIN inputs can be reconfigured and reassigned to any of the front-panel inputs as your needs dictate.

Our preamplifiers epitomise everything we believe in. Starting with our revolutionary NAC 12 back in 1974, Naim preamplifiers have both rewritten the rules and set the standards for others to follow. The NAC 552, our reference model, is no different: its distinctive two-box configuration marks it out from the competition just as surely as its unfettered musicality reflects our core values. It’s the best preamplifier we’ve ever produced, and by extension, has a fair claim to being the finest available today.

Features:• Two-box configuration for optimum

rejection of electromagnetic interference

• Split-rail power supply featuring 800VA toroidal transformer, three smoothing capacitors and new Discrete Regulator (DR)

• Fully suspended sub-chassis for superior isolation of sensitive circuit boards

• AV bypass mode for simple connection to an existing AV system

Step up from the NAC 202 and you arrive at the outstanding NAC 282, which includes the NAPSC power supply unit optionally available on its sibling. The NAPSC independently powers the NAC 282’s digital and control circuits, leaving its audio circuits to either the power supply of a NAC 155 XS or NAP 200 power amplifier, or to one of our standalone FlatCap XS, HiCap or SuperCap power supplies. The result is even greater transparency and superior musicality plus, of course, all the flexibility you’d expect from one of our preamplifiers.

Our entry-level preamplifier, the NAC 152 XS provides all the transparency and musicality you’d expect from Naim, plus a long-term upgrade path to even better performance. The perfect alternative to an integrated amplifier, it’s an outstanding first step into the world of Naim ownership.

Our newest preamplifier is also our first to incorporate all the experience we’ve gained from our range of streaming products. Stream your favourite music to it at up to 24bit/192kHz resolution and control via our n-Stream app for iOS devices.

The NAC 202 builds on our entry-level NAC 152 XS, adding new star-earthed circuit boards for superior transparency plus anti-vibration, resonance controlling feet and a low-resonance circuit board layout. It provides for a wide range of expansion and upgrade options, including connection to a StageLine phono stage and a AV bypass connection to an external AV amplifier.

Like many of our products, the NAC 252 stems from good stock: it descends directly from the NAC 52, still one of the finest preamplifiers ever made. Capable of exceptional clarity, its power supply components reside in a separate enclosure: the SuperCap power supply unit. This ensures optimum isolation from electromagnetic interference and provides each of the ten audio circuits with an independent, fully regulated supply voltage. Additionally, separate power supplies for the digital control and switching circuitry further isolate the audio circuitry from noise. It’s this attention to detail that makes the NAC 252 so special – that, and our determination to let nothing stand in the way of your musical enjoyment.

Power AmplifiersDesign Without Compromise

“Our brief for the NAP 500 power amplifier was simple: design an amplifier that was at the very least better than our reference at the time, the NAP 135. This gave us scope to really push the boundaries of what was thought possible for hi-fi performance. Suspended internal PCB boards and high-current bipolar transistors developed through six years of work with a semi-conductor manufacturer are just a couple of the innovations we introduced.”

Gary Crocker – Electronic Design Engineer

Muscular and musicalTo deliver the world renowned levels of pace, rhythm and timing we require, the NAP 500 operates in bridged mode with each channel of power benefiting from maximised open and closed loop speed, less intrusive protection circuitry and reduced interaction between input and output signals.

If its power is impressive, the NAP 500’s tonal purity and musicality are even more remarkable. Its distinctive two-box configuration reflects our belief that reducing power supply induced distortion and harmonic electrical noise from an amplifier will dramatically improve its sound. We coupled this with all-new circuit topology and careful provision for reducing thermally induced noise.

As the debut product in our reference 500 Series range, the NAP 500 is the ultimate expression of Naim amplifier technology. Its remarkable design was honed over six years of collaborative work with suppliers of specialist parts – time invested in ensuring that its high-current, high-power, wide-bandwidth bipolar output transistors are capable of performing to our exacting standards.

Features:• 140W per channel output into 8 ohms;

capable of prolonged output into 2 ohms with no discernible impact on performance

• Bridged power amplifier configuration for maximised open- and closed-loop speed, with ten stages of local regulation per channel

• Two-box configuration for optimum rejection of electromagnetic interference

• 1,100VA toroidal transformer provides 12 raw DC supplies for the power amplifier

• 25kg brushed, black-anodised chassis with distinctive heatsink plus variable speed intelligent fan system for discreet extra cooling if required

• Five times the internal bandwidth, one-quarter of the distortion and 100 times lower noise floor when compared to our previous flagship, the NAP 135

The NAP 100 is a classic expression of traditional Naim power amplifier engineering. While its dimensions are conveniently compact – just a mere 20cm wide – its performance is seriously dynamic and expansive. Combine the NAP 100 with the DAC-V1, our matching sized DAC.

The NAPV 145 is our mono power amplifier for use with multichannel AV systems. It shares the circuit layout and key components of our acclaimed NAP 250 and is every bit as transparent and articulate, yet provides even greater dynamics.

The ideal partner for our NAC 152 XS preamplifier or NAC-N 172 XS streaming preamplifier, the NAP 155 XS features a substantial, custom-designed toroidal transformer with separate transformer windings for each output channel.

Few components in the history of hi-fi can match the pedigree of the mighty NAP 250. First introduced in 1975, its regular updates –  both aesthetic and technical – have kept it at the very forefront of power amplifier performance for more than three decades.

Our NAP 200 builds on the abilities of the entry-level NAP 155 XS, and is ideally suited for use with our NAC 202 preamplifier. Its upgraded circuit layout and improved earthing arrangements enhance its purity of purpose and its 430VA toroidal transformer features separate windings for left and right channel power supplies, ensuring stable power to even the most demanding speakers for extended periods.

The NAP 300 incorporates all the advances pioneered with its siblings and adopts the radical two-box configuration of its bigger brother, the NAP 500: one box houses the amplification circuitry, while another – the 300 PS – hosts the power supply components. The result is both superior purity of tone and immense power.

We’re well aware of our distinctiveness: it’s something we embrace, a facet of our character we’re proud to nurture. Nowhere is this determination to dance to the beat of our own drum more apparent than in our understanding of and enthusiasm for better-quality power supplies. To us, a smooth, stable, low-noise supply is critical. It’s absolutely fundamental to performance.

Power Supplies Every Detail Counts

No part of a Naim product escapes the careful scrutiny of our engineers. The position and layout of wires that carry signals and power around a product is very important. Run a delicate audio signal line next to a noisy power line for example, and it will pick up noise and distortion. We minimise such interference by optimising the signal path layout within the product. Even the influence of every individual cable tie is considered and controlled.

Reference-quality performanceOriginally designed to partner our world-class CD555 CD player, the 555 PS can also be used with our NDS and NDX network players, our HDX hard disk player/server and our DAC digital to analogue converter as well as the CDX2 CD player. Whatever Naim product it partners, the 555 PS will improve every aspect of your favourite music. Voices and instruments become clearer and more natural. Perceived dynamic range increases too, while timing – music’s fundamental sense of rhythm and accuracy – snaps into even greater focus.

Engineered for successThe 555 PS benefits from both our decades of experience and our relentless pursuit of superior sound quality. Its massive transformer, some 40 percent larger than that fitted to our XPS power supply, features five separate windings outputting to seven regulated supply voltages, including an output specifically intended for use with the clock circuitry of our CD555.

Not everyone sees hi-fi as we do. For us, a smooth, stable, low-noise power supply isn’t just desirable: it’s fundamental to proper hi-fi performance. Nowhere is that belief more clearly exemplified than in our reference 555 PS, the best power supply in our portfolio.

Features:• Seven regulated supply voltages, including

a separate supply for the CD555 clock circuit

• Low-resonance case with isolating feet

• Massive transformer, 40 percent larger than that fitted to the XPS

• Supplied with Power-Line mains cable as standard

• All-new Discrete Regulator (DR) configuration, delivering Naim’s best-ever standards of stable, low-noise power

It may be small, but the HiCap’s talent for maximising your system’s musicality should not be underestimated. A compact power supply partner for almost all of our preamplifiers plus our phono stages and active crossover components, its large toroidal transformer and generous, high-quality smoothing capacitors ensure excellent performance and value. NAC 282 preamplifier owners can enjoy even better performance by adding an additional, second HiCap to their system.

The XPS sits in the middle of our extensive power supply range, and is one of our most flexible performers. It can be used to upgrade our CDX2 CD player and DAC digital to analogue converter, and it is also suitable for use with our NDS, NDX and ND5 XS network players, plus our HDX hard- disk server. Its toroidal transformer benefits from six separately regulated, low-noise outputs and has recently been upgraded to incorporate our DR voltage regulator technology.

The XP5 XS evolved to partner our ND5 XS network player. Its slimline XS Series enclosure, solidly constructed from aluminium extrusions and a brushed and anodised front panel, makes it a fine visual match for its partner. However, as with our other power supplies, it can also be used to upgrade other components in the Naim range. Its low-capacitance ceramic heat sinks, large smoothing capacitors and 250VA transformer give it the performance to match its looks.

Designed to complement our entry-level XS range, the FlatCap XS is a dual-rail, dual-output power supply that powers not just one, but two Naim components if required. For example, an XS Series owner could add a FlatCap XS to enhance the performance of both a CD5 XS and a NAC 152 XS, and so enjoy all the improvements to clarity, dynamics and timing you’d expect from any Naim power supply upgrade. It’s a logical, high-value and highly effective upgrade path – just as you’d expect from Naim.

The compact NAPSC comes as standard with the NAC 282 preamplifier, and it can also be used as an upgrade component for the NAC 202. In both applications, it supplies power to all the digital circuitry used for preamplifier switching functions, improving clarity and reducing noise. The NAPSC can also be used to power the HeadLine headphone amplifier.

As iconic as it is widely acclaimed, the SuperCap is a Naim classic, capable of powering every preamplifier in our range except for the NAC-N 172 XS and our flagship, the NAC 552. Its substantial toroidal transformer and high-quality smoothing capacitors combine to ensure improved timing, clarity and dynamic range from your favourite music. Upgraded with our new DR voltage regulator, this timeless component remains one of the most well-known and oft-employed power supplies in our range, and for good reason.

A Pure Development Project

“When we approached the task of perfecting the performance of our power supplies we soon found, through experimentation and listening tests, that there was an opportunity to better the generic off-the-shelf regulators we were using. We started by thinking we could use an op-amp in the circuit and it did indeed measure very well. However, we were frustrated to find this wasn’t backed up in the listening room. That’s when we took the decision to tear up the design and build a Discrete Regulator instead. After two years of development and several technical breakthroughs we introduced the new Naim DR to selected power supplies. Perhaps even more importantly, we also refined every aspect of their design and component selection. The result, I think, is a revolution in performance.”

Roy George – Technical Director

Introducing Naim’s New DR Technology

Supplying hi-fi electronics with smooth, stable, low-noise power is absolutely

fundamental to hi-fi performance. It’s a simple rule that is central to our

philosophy of music reproduction. With this in mind we set up a special

engineering project with a single aim: improve the performance of our power

supplies. After more than two years in the lab and thousands of hours in the

listening room, Naim DR Technology was born.

One of the first Naim products was a loudspeaker, an active model which graced the studios of start-up station Capital Radio in the early 1970s. Since then the range has progressed through a host of iconic and much-loved models, to the new Ovator range. As the most visually prominent aspect of a system, loudspeakers must perform to our exacting standards and also look good while doing so.

Pictured: specially calibrated mechanical lifting equipment allows our technicians to rotate the 1.4m, 60kg Ovator S-800 cabinet a full 360° during assembly.

The S-800 is the biggest and best-sounding Ovator of them all, our reference design. Its huge 1.4m tall, 93.5kg enclosure houses twin 28cm flat-panel bass units to ensure extraordinary bass response all the way down to 20Hz, considered the low-frequency threshold of human hearing. It isn’t just bass you hear: it’s sound you experience. Scale isn’t the only thing that matters, though, and with the Ovator S-800, accuracy is just as important. The linear, perfectly precise 82mm BMR drive unit is treated with all the reverence that its unique engineering demands: housed in its own aluminium alloy cylinder within the S-800 cabinet and isolated from undesirable resonances transmitted through the enclosure by two four-element leaf springs, it has all it needs to shine.

Features:• Twin 280mm flat-panel bass drivers plus 82mm

Balanced Mode Radiator (BMR)

• Frequency response down to 20Hz, and up to 35kHz

• Ultra-rigid multi-composite enclosure, strategically mass-damped and internally sub-divided to provide optimum loading volumes for each drive unit

The BMR technology introduced in our Ovator range required a new kind of crossover circuit design. Whilst redesigning the SNAXO, our engineers took every possible step to optimise performance, including improving the output stages and using the high-mass, brass plate suspension system pioneered by the SuperLine reference phono stage. The SNAXO 362 BMR plays a vital role in upgrading your system to active specification.

Our entry-level floorstanding loudspeaker, the S-400, is designed to deliver outstanding results in smaller rooms. It will work effectively when powered by less ambitious levels of amplification than with the S-600 and S-800, yet it still employs BMR drive unit technology, and its twin 165mm bass drivers endow it with breathtaking bass output for a design of its size. The result is a moderately sized loudspeaker capable of delivering brilliant sound.

Features:• Twin 165mm bass drivers plus 46mm Balanced Mode Radiator (BMR)

• Frequency response down to 36Hz, and up to 35kHz

• Ultra-rigid multi-composite enclosure, strategically mass-damped and internally sub-divided to provide optimum loading volumes for each drive unit

• Decoupling leaf spring suspension between die-cast plinth and enclosure to avoid low-frequency colouration

• Flexible rubber suspension built around BMR drive unit itself

• Available in Ash, Cherry, Black Zebrano and Rosewood

The first of our Ovator range of loudspeakers, the S-600 was also the first high-end hi-fi loudspeaker to use the game-changing advantages of BMR drive unit technology, and it remains a statement product within its price class. A larger and more powerful loudspeaker than the S-400, it employs twin 200mm bass drivers for greater low-frequency extension in larger listening rooms. By using the same suspended enclosure technology employed in our Ovator S-800 loudspeaker, its 85mm BMR is also isolated from undesirable resonances.

Every link in the audio chain is important. From the tiniest chrome-plated steel ball bearings and studs to the most massive extruded aluminium casework and wooden veneer cabinets. It’s something we’ve observed time and again in our research, and it’s the reason we continue to place huge emphasis on attention to detail. As a consequence, we manufacture our own range of equipment supports and cables. We think it’s the only way we can guarantee that your system will deliver the sonic satisfaction you expect of it.

Pictured: every Naim interconnect is shaken 180 times by a custom-designed pneumatic production device affectionately named ‘The SNAIC Shaker’ by our technicians. Why do we do this? Because it improves sound quality.
