Audience – Uses & Gratifications Personal Identity – For the editor and team at the magazine , this is imperative, as if the audience can empathise and gain personal identity through reading a magazine they will be inclined to buy and read it. The reader engages with artists in magazines as role models and aspires to identify with, for example, how they look and sound as a singer and, in turn, be like them. Readers also identify with specific journalists who write for the magazines as they may hold the same opinions. In order to identify with the audience, magazines are either subject or gender specific. Entertainment – Just like TV, magazines are primarily to entertain their audience. Reading magazines can provide entertainment for their audiences , they can be an escape from everyday life or can be read for educational purposes. Some specific content can enable people to improve their knowledge and skills , for example, providing guitar and piano chords so the person can learn more. People can also read magazines for entertainment purposes in general, in regard to gauging tips and advice on fashion, life, cars and music and this will entertain people if it is a passion of theirs. Magazines can be found in almost any subject, even angling. Information – Magazines are a source of information for the audience. Each and every different magazine genre will have specific information tailored to the wants and needs of their audience. For music magazines, this will be information on global music, events, current new releases, and some are specific to an audience who play a particular instrument. They give key information about previous, current and upcoming events in the industry . This information allows the readers of the magazine to feel involved and informed which may be a reason why they read the magazines, for their personal interest or even for their job. Integration and Social Interaction – Social interaction allows people to share opinions/views/likes/dislikes on what they have read in the magazine. People may recommend the magazine to a group which will increase sales and enable integration so others will buy the magazine to be like their friends and connect with them on the same level.
