AUDIENCE RESEARCH

The people in this survey were all in the age group 16-20, therefore this survey does not link to all ages.

However this is the target audience for my music magazine and I wanted to research what my target audience liked and disliked about current music magazines.

WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC DO YOU PREFER?

The most popular genre of music was Indie music, this was closely followed by Rock music. There were also a number of music genres that were not favoured by my audience. These were: Punk, Jazz, Classical ,R&B, Dance, Alternative, Other. This response shows that most young people prefer rock and indie music to pop music which is the dominant genre in the charts.

50% of people favoured Indie music to any other genre of music.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU BUY MUSIC MAGAZINES?

Most of the poll never bought music magazines.

The majority of people in this poll do buy music magazines, they same amount of people bought music magazines Yearly or as people who Never bought music magazines. Nobody in my poll bought a music magazine Weekly therefore I will make my magazine Monthly.

HOW MUCH WOULD YOU PAY FOR A MUSIC MAGAZINE?

50% of people would pay £2-2.99 for a magazine.

The dominant prices that the audience would be prepared to pay for a music magazine are £2-2.99 and £3.3.99. This price would be the best as it also includes freebies and posters and is the most usual price for existing magazines. No one in my poll would be prepared to pay over £4 for a music magazine.

WHICH MUSIC MAGAZINE WOULD YOU PREFER TO BUY?

Over 50% of the poll would buy Kerrang! Magazine.

Kerrang! was the most dominant magazine in the poll, this may be because it is a very well known brand and is a popular rock music magazine. The poll showed that certain magazines were not popular, this were: RockSound, Mojo and NME.

WHAT ATTRACTS YOU THE MOST TO A MUSIC MAGAZINE?

Most of the poll said the image and the headline attracted them to magazines.

The image on the front cover of the magazine is the main effect which promotes the magazine. The image needs to be eye catching and bold to attract my target audience and the person in the image is usually facing the camera. The headline is also the main way of promoting a magazine, it needs to be bold and easy to remember.

WOULD YOU PREFER ARTICLES TO BE ABOUT ARTISTS/ BAND MEMBERS LIVES OR THEIR MUSIC?

Half of the poll wanted to know about musicians lives and half about their music.

This question created a divide, half of the people in my poll wanted to know about Musicians/Band members lives and half wanted to know about their music. From the poll I can see that I will need to incorporate both of these into my magazine and my articles/interviews.

WOULD YOU PREFER ARTICLES TO BE ABOUT WELL KNOWN ARTISTS OR UPCOMING/NEW ARTISTS?

60% of people would rather have news on famous artists than new artists.

40% of people in the poll wanted to be informed about New and Upcoming artists but more people wanted to know about already popular artists. NME tries to promote unsigned artists as well as popular ones . Therefore I will try to incorporate both of these categories into my article/interview as the poll showed that there was not a large divide.

WHAT CONTENT WOULD YOU PREFER TO BE IN A MUSIC MAGAZINE?

Most of the poll preferred articles and interviews.

All of the options on this question have been voted for as they are the most common in magazines. Posters, articles and interviews were the most popular for magazines and they will be promoted on the front cover. Quizzes and competitions were the least favourite as some magazines charge for their competitions and quizzes are not usually interesting and are time consuming.
