For my audience research questionnaire I am going to ask 15 females around the age of 15 – 30 as I want this to be my primary target audience as I feel I will be able to create a magazine which strongly reflects to the genre of magazine I want to create as I am more familiar with this type of music.

What magazine would you prefer to read?

Kerrang

Vibe

Q

NME

Metal Hammer

My results show that Q is the most popular magazine and Kerrang the least. This firstly implies that the people I asked to do my questionnaire were the types of people I would imagine reading my magazine because they fit the stereotypes. However it also shows that the stereotype I have chosen to look at obviously like lots of different genres of music because NME focuses on mainly rock music whereas Q has more indie music in comparison.

These results also show that Q and NME also have a much more loyal set of consumers because of their multiplatform company creating themselves a better reputation and showing that they really are up to date not only with their technology (how and what the consumers consume) but also with their music updates which is the type of appeal I want to give with my magazine.

The most popular things readers expect to see in music magazines are interviews this implies that people prefer finding out the experiences of sings/groups. It suggests the gratification theory personal relationships as it gives something for people to talk about with their friends. The next most popular feature is exclusive news this suggests that people want to be in the know of the latest news which again suits the personal relationship section of the theory. I will consider this when creating my magazine front cover , contents page and DPS.

The results drawn from this question in the questionnaire suggests that interviews are preferred in a magazine DPS. This shows that people love to here about new information about their favourite artists. Exclusive news is also high and would imply that readers like to read exclusive interviews to find out about new ‘secret’ things about their favuorite artists/singers.

£5 or more

These results show that the average price people are prepared to spend on a magazine is around £3 - £4. This is about the average price for a popular magazine with loyal customers and for a multiplatform business. This shows that people think the magazines are fairly priced and are aware of the price of their magazine showing their loyalty to these magazines again.

These results show that their is a huge variety in the artists that people like and therefore confirms that people like lots of different types of music therefore a magazine with a range would be successful. The most popular artists tend to be those that have been around longer this is probably because they have made a bigger name and more people therefore know about them therefore they have gained a large audience. It also shows that the age range of people i chose to answer my questionnaire are probably quite a demanding set of people as they like lots of different types of music.

Exclusive interviews seem to be the main feature that would encourage people to buy a magazine, similar to question 2 and 3 this is because society is keen to find out about peoples lives and be in the know with popular bands and artists so they can be up to date in their social groups. I will consider putting a plug or flash on the front page of my magazine to entice more readers in and therefore make more profit for my magazine.

By targetting the clubber this means that they are quite adventurous and wild therefore this suggests that the genre of music will be exciting and wild similarly to dance. As clubbers will travel miles to get to a festival this would imply the are open to different genre types and therefore they will enjoy my pop, dance, hip hop and r&b genres. To suit the fast moving lifestyle of a clubber I will be a multiplatform company so that they can access their favourite magazine easily and have products that suit their needs.

Page 10: Audience research

The Rah is a target audience that I was put under according to ‘Find your tribe’ questionnaire results. This is a good target audience for my magazine as it shows people who are prepared to take on a bit of a classy style of magazine because of their up bringing. They all enjoy having fun and being young therefore it shows that music could be the key to them having fun to dance and enjoy themselves therefore music will be a key role in their young lifestyles. This will help my magazine as they will want to know all the new types of music and be in the know so they can chat in their social groups about it. In this stereotype they come from a wealthy background therefore a multiplatform company will be essential for them as they constantly want new things to show off to their friends.

Page 11: Audience research

A townie enjoys shopping and buying themselves things suggesting that they like to be up to date with new fashions or trends, therefore this target audience will suit my very well magazine as they may choose to by themselves a new music CD from which they have found in my magazine but also the music provided in my magazine will be up to date reflecting their lifestyle when having to go out buying new up to date items. The may be found in a club which suits the type of music found in my magazine therefore they suit my genre well. You could say that they dislike the less heavy music therefore this target audience suits my magazine because the types of music aren’t particularly ‘heavy’ like rock.
