THE YORK THEATRE COMPANY HISTORY

The York Theatre Cornpan!- is the only theatre in New York Ci?---and one of req- few in the world--- dedicated to developing and fully producing new musicals and prese1~4ng neglected, notable shows from the past. For over three decades, the York's intimate, imagnative style of producing both new and classic muslcals has resulted in critical acclaim, muluple awards, and acclamation from artists and audiences altke. This spri~~g, a special Drama Desk _%ward u-as presented to the York for its "vital contributions to theater by developing and presenting new musicals." Last year, York saw three productions move to commercial productions: The lll~t~-i~.al O ~ L \ ~ U J J ~ C U ~ S (the ~\.fusi~.aLy -- to a 500-performance run off-Broadway at New World Stages (as well as in the West End and numerous regonal theaters); So~trjetzir -- to Broadwafs Lyceum Theatre, garnenng a Tony Award nomination for Judy Icaye; and Stephen Schwartz's Captain h z t i e -- ~vhich moved off-Broadu-ay to The Idttle Shul~ert. Other York productions which have moved to estended runs on Broadway and Off include Swee~eellfj Todd, Pa~,ifi~. Ozlertures and Jolson 6 Compa/g. This past year, York also received an Outer Ciltics Circle nomi~~ation; a Drama League citation and 4 Drama Desk Award nominations.
