Who’s buying- Gender

Looking through the demographics of the company Billboard I found that there was a considerable difference on how different genders view the magazine. As we can see men are more accustomed to buying an actual copy of the magazine as men are roughly three quarters of the magazine buyers, this is compared to online viewers where the audience is around 60:40 in woman's favour. As I am doing a magazine, this tells me that I should make the content more male orientated as statistically they are more likely to buy the magazine.

Who’s buying- AgeOnline audience

Magazine audience

• I found out that the average age for a magazine audience is 10 years younger than the online audience, to ensure that younger audiences will see the magazine I will put social media sites on the front cover.

• Founding out the average age of the magazine on the site, I am really surprised at how old it was thinking that its poppy genre was be around 15-20 years younger, this could be due to a few older people pulling the average up.

• Although I have looked into Billboard my genre of music is targeted at a much younger audience, meaning this information is irrelevant to my magazine and I will challenge this information.

Social Media

This shows the companies following on social media sites, the large following on sites like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube could suggest a younger audience as generally these sites are used by people of a younger age.

Who’s buying-Gender

In mixmag the gender percentage of those who buy the hard copy of the magazine is very similar to billboard with the buyer being very male dominant with almost three quarters of the audience being male. Giving that both magazines gave me similar answers this shows that it is important that I target the male audience as these will be the majority of my buyers.

Who’s buying-Age

The median age of mixmag was a considerable amount lower (at 24) then the Billboard magazine (at 47). This was more what I was expecting as an average age, and what I will copy going into my magazine. This could be because of the slight difference in music genre in the two magazines. 49% of readers are in the bracket of the age 18-24 and 81.5% of the readers in the age bracket 18-34 this shows how young adult is mixmag’s target audience and how little other age brackets buy the magazine. It also tells me how the majority of the buyers live in cities, this could how the audience is quite quirky and hip.
