What Is EMPIRE?

• EMPIRE is a British film magazine that sold its first issue in July 1989.

• It is published monthly by Bauer Consumer Media and reviews both mainstream films and art films.

The Main Features Of EMPIRE• Each issue (with exception to issues 108-113) features a Classic Scene which is a transcript from a famous

film scene. The first Classic Scene that was featured in EMPIRE was the “I could have been a contender” scene from “On The Waterfront”.

• The usual Top 10 part is a list of EMPIRE’s choice of the top 10 examples of things that are film-related. For example, Top 10 character returns or Top 10 best villains.

• In the At Home section, Blu-ray and DVD releases and news is talked about. Kim Newman’s Movie Dungeon makes a regular appearance in this section. This is when critic Kim Newman reviews the most obscure movie releases and most of the are low budget horror films.

• Pint Of Milk presents celebrities answers to unusual questions, including the question “How much is a pint of milk?”. This is intended to be a sort of guide to that certain celebrities concept of reality.

• Each issue contains a Spine Quote which is when a relatively challenging quote, mostly from a film, is printed onto the spine of the magazine. There are usually some obvious links to the main features of that month’s edition in the quote. Readers are then invited to identify the film source of the quote and the links to the issue to win a prize.

• Celebrity Mastermind also makes a regular appearance in EMPIRE. This is when a celebrity is given some questions about the films that they have either starred in or directed themselves.

Who reads EMPIRE?

• The targeted audience for EMPIRE magazine is mainly males that are aged between 15-24 years old.

EMPIRE’s Website• The EMPIRE website is a lot different to the magazine sold in

shops.

• It has many more sections that the magazine and various different videos of things like interviews, movie trailers etc.
