    AUDITION GUIDANCE FOR

    INSTRUMENTAL APPLICANTS

    Welcome

    To enable you to demonstrate your

    full potential at your audition, we

    will do our best to make you feel

    as comfortable as possible from

    the moment you arrive at the

    college.

    Whatever the outcome of your

    audition, our aim is to make it

    a valuable experience for you.

    The Admissions Team will be

    available on the day to answer any

    questions and you will also be able

    to talk to current students about

    their experiences at the Royal

    Welsh College of Music & Drama.

    To help you prepare for your

    audition, please read the following

    guidance notes carefully.

    Your Audition

    DatesOnce we have received your

    application we will enter the exact

    date and time of your audition on

    CUKAS Track. For applications

    received before 1 October 2012,

    auditions will usually be held in

    November.

    For applications received afterthe deadline of 1st October 2012,

    auditions will be held in Spring 2013

    if vacancies still exist.

    Please note the College is only

    obliged to offer one audition date

    per application. Alternative dates will

    only be provided (subject to

    availability) in exceptional

    circumstances. If you are unable to

    make your allocated audition date,

    you should email us immediately

    stating the reason.

    The AuditionYou should aim to arrive at the

    college at least 30 minutes before

    the time of your audition and report

    to the main reception.

    You will have access to an individual

    practice room in which to warm up

    for 20 minutes before your audition

    starts.

    If you wish, we can provide an

    accompanist for your audition

    and during your warm-up. There

    is no additional cost for this.

    The audition panel will typically

    consist of two members of staff and

    the audition will last approximately

    25 minutes in total.

    For details of the repertoire

    requirements specific to each

    instrumental department, please

    see the table below.

    In total your performance should last

    approximately 10 minutes although

    the panel may stop you sooner if

    they feel that they have been able

    to make an assessment.

    As part of your audition you may

    also be asked to complete an aural

    assessment, a short sight-reading

    exercise, and a series of technical

    tests including scales and arpeggios(typically selected from the ABRSM

    Grade 8 Syllabus).

    After the audition you will have

    an opportunity to discuss your

    application with the panel.

    At the end of your audition and

    interview you will be free to leave.

    Brass Two contrasting pieces which allow you to demonstrate

    the full extent of your ability.

    Guitar Two contrasting pieces which allow you to demonstrate

    the full extent of your ability. Please note that guitar

    auditions are unaccompanied.

    Harp Two contrasting pieces which allow you to demonstrate

    the full extent of your ability. Please note that harp

    auditions are unaccompanied.

    Keyboard Three pieces in contrasting styles and from different

    periods to perform from memory. Please ensure that

    your repertoire allows you to demonstrate the full

    extent of your ability, including the use of the pedal.

    Percussion Unaccompanied items on timpani, snare drum and

    tuned percussion. We will provide instruments for you

    to use at your audition but you will need to bring your

    own sticks/beaters/mallets. Please note that percussion

    auditions are unaccompanied.

    Strings Two contrasting pieces which allow you to demonstrate

    the full extent of your ability.

    Woodwind Two contrasting pieces which allow you to demonstrate

    the full extent of your ability.

    What Happens Next?

    We will let you know the outcome

    of your audition by the end of

    December. Decisions will be

    communicated via CUKAS Track.

    How to find UsUnfortunately there is no parking

    within the college grounds, except

    for disabled parking. However, there

    are pay and display car parks either

    side of the campus on North Road,

    and opposite in the Civic Centre.

    Please ensure you allow plenty of

    time to park. Alternatively, the

    college is a 15-minute walk from

    Cardiff Central Train Station. Both

    National Express and Mega Bus stop

    outside Cardiff Universitys Student

    Union, which is a 5-minute walk from

    the college.
