“He must increase, but I mustdecrease.” (John 3:30)

The above verse quotes aprophet. His name was John. This was not the Apostle John, but John the Baptist who was

preaching just as Jesus’ public ministry began. This John had disciples who fol-lowed him in his ministry. Jesus and His disciples had come along and were bap-tizing folks. Jesus was drawing bigger crowds than John. John’s disciples cameto him and were concerned that Jesus’ ministry was overshadowing John’s. Thisis when John uttered these words, “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

Some years ago there was a popular preacher. He was very dynamic and wasinvited to many conferences nationwide. He was pastor of a huge church andhad started a college. Suffice to say that he got into some trouble and controversy.Sides were taken over loyalty to this preacher. In fact, it became a test of fellow-ship as to whether you supported this guy. There were buttons printed up thatpeople wore that said “I am 100% behind <that preacher>” They wore buttons!

I remember one pastor commenting, “I am not 100% behind me. Why would I be100 % behind him?” The fact is that there is only one person that someone whonames the name of Jesus should be 100% for. Only Jesus should be magnified. It is the Christian life in a nutshell. “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

Frank Snyder is Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, located on US 12between Coldwater and Quincy, 517-639-4239, www.cbcquincy.com.
