Lot 371. Cains’ Australian Rose Cold Cream, 78 King St, Sydney. An extremely rare pot lid from Sydney, this is the first we have ever seen for sale. This example has been graded as Excellent. It has fine, slightly rusted crazing throughout, a few small scratches to the glaze, the face is just about perfect on this piece. The underside of the flange has a few small flakes, the largest is only 5 x 3 mm and very shallow, this is actually glazed over and so was from manufacture. There is a tiny L shaped mark on this bottom edge as well, 4 mm in one direction, 2 mm in another. Some minor rusty dis-colouration underneath. Our numerical grading is 8.5.

Estimate: $1,250-1,500.

Lot 112. Shanks & Sons, Gympie, 7 ounce Lamont with Pair of Chickens trade mark. This is a superb bottle with the highly detailed trade mark, in great condition. This bottle is graded as Very Good. 12 x 5 mm scuff mark to front lip, there is a finer scratch alongside this. Scuff mark to front shoulder above embossing, diagonally over 10 x 10 mm. Light 40 mm scratch to the rear of the left seam line. A few other light scuffs and scratches externally. There are some fine fisheyes to be found, mostly around the base, but a few elsewhere. A of Trade on rear has a small impact mark, as does H of John around the base. The remainder of the embossing is great with only the odd minor mark. Internally, there appears to be some light dirty staining in the lower half, this will almost certainly soak out without any issues. Our numerical grading is 7.9.

Estimate: $400-500.Lot 222. Cobalt Quilted Oil, registered to Kilner in 1850.One of the most desirable of the goldfields bottles is this sensa-tional piece. It is highly elaborate and in a beautiful deep cobalt blue colour, this is the pinnacle for most goldfields collectors. This bottle is Near Mint. It has a couple of light scratches that can only be found on close inspection. Some bubbles on the surface and some crude folds in the glass from making. The original clear glass stopper has a bruise to the lower part, which is hidden when in place anyway. This is a truly amazing piece! We have given it a numerical grading of 9.4.

Estimate: $2,500-3,000.

Lot 184. Weaver & Co Ginger Beer, Hobart. This has a Dark chocolate brown top, these are often referred to as a “Black Top”.Due to the colouration of the top and the rarity, this is one of the most sought after ginger beers in Tasmania from the 1900s period. This bottle is Very Good. It has general light dullness and wear to the glaze throughout. The upper lip has half a dozen or so glaze flakes, pretty much just spots of wear just through the glaze. There are some lumps to the body from the manufacturing process, a few of these have formed blow outs, there are two to the left of the badge and a couple to be found elsewhere as well. There are a couple of glaze flakes to the left side of the body as well. There is one small flake or minor blowout to the N of ginger. Some metallic looking scratches in spots on the left side, there are a couple near the base and one near the upper part of the badge. These are surface marks which may come off. Minor wear around the sharp shoulder edge in places. This is a great example with no damage apart from some dullness! Our numerical grading is 7.5.

Estimate: $2,000-2,500.

Page 19: AUCTION 8 · 2020. 6. 21. · Rare Victorian codd to go with the small one sold in Auction 7! EX, small rough spot to lip, fine scratch-es over the body, rust spot or two (8.0) $300-400

Lot 369. Blue print Genuine Bears Grease with Cupid trade mark. This is a very rare and early lid, we have never seen anything like it. It would likely date to the goldfields era, as with most Bears Grease lids. It is in Excellent condition. It has lightly discoloured crazing throughout the lid. The bottom of the flange has numerous little flakes and glaze chips, these are all small and do not detract from this piece in any way. The print looks distinctly blue but it may just be the way the Blue-black ink that was used at the time has come up after firing? We have given this lid a numerical condition grading of 8.4.

Estimate: $5,000-6,000.

Lot 102. J. H. Chalker, Harden, 13 ounce crown seal skittle with Horse Shoe trade mark. This is an extremely rare pictorial crown seal skittle from country New South Wales. It is in Excellent condition. It has very minor light scuffs to the external part of the lip. Some light scratches mainly to the wide part of the body which have a slightly rusty coloured appearance to them. On the front there is one to the right of the writing and one near the word TRADE. A few other light scuffs and scratches. Internally there is a very light haze from the lower neck region downward, this would be contents residue. This is a superb bottle, it has nice whittling throughout and some crude spots and flecks through the glass. There is a small green

streak within the glass in the lip region. The embossing is crisp and clear on this beauty, only a couple of tiny marks to be found. Large size, pictorial skittles such as this are very few and far between, this one not only looks great, but is in great condition, making it a highly desirable piece for crown seal collectors across the country. Our numerical grading on this bottle is 8.7.

Estimate: $1,000-1,500.

Lot 137. Jose’s Soda Water, Geraldton, cobalt blue torpedo bottle, known as the “Fat Boy”.There are several cobalt torpedo bottles from Geraldton, this is the rarest of them all, in fact, very few, if any of these, have been found in Geraldton itself. This one is in Good condition. It has been polished. The top of the lip has some wear and tiny nibbles and flakes. Seam lines are just visible in places. Embossing has been protected and has a little bit of wear to the surface. Rounded scratches and marks remain over the surface of the bottle. Some scaling on the inner neck. Small indent from manufacture near the back base, this is a couple of burst airbubbles side by side. These are a nice bright colour, a tad lighter than the usual blues from Geraldton, the colour really makes this bottle stand out from the norm. Combined with the entire embossing being on one side, unlike the other Jose variations, and the rarity of this piece, these are one of the most highly desired torpedo bottles amongst collectors. We have given this a numerical grading of 6.6.

Estimate: $2,000-2,500.
