hroughout my first year as AUC’s 10thpresident, the pace of activity seemedto intensify as the year unfolded. From

my earliest days, however, it was quite apparentthat AUC’s strengths were many, including arich heritage and an excellent reputation,thanks in large part to its distinguished alumniand its many friends and supporters.

While much of the year was focused onstrategic thinking and planning, due to thetremendous effort put forth by the Board ofTrustees and the work of my predecessor andfriend, the late John Gerhart, much of thegroundwork for determining the directionAUC needs to take was in place. My mandate,as I have often stated, is to ensure that AUCevolves from being a good university to beinga great university.

Over the course of the year, three strategicobjectives emerged.The first is the completionof our new state-of-the-art campus in NewCairo. I am happy to report that we havecontinued to make progress on the newcampus project, completing the sitepreparation phase last year, which keeps theproject on schedule with our relocation to thenew campus scheduled for September 2007.

The second objective is the Agenda for Excellence, a comprehensive plan to strengthen our faculty andenhance academic quality. As we continue to work on recruiting and developing a high caliber faculty,we are also committed to attracting the best students in Egypt and the region.Through severalscholarship initiatives, including the Public School Scholarship Fund and the Leadership in Educationand Development (LEAD) scholarship program, we are making an AUC education available to some ofEgypt’s brightest students, who may have otherwise not had the opportunity to reap the benefits of anAmerican liberal arts education. LEAD will bring each year two top public school students from each ofEgypt’s 27 governorates.

As part of the Agenda for Excellence, we inaugurated several new programs that will contribute toAUC’s academic vitality and advance our educational mission.These include new graduate programs inlaw and international development. In addition, our academic integrity initiative and a new center forpublic service and philanthropy enforce AUC’s commitment to shared values and active service in thecommunity.

The final strategic objective is the successful completion of AUC’s Comprehensive Capital Campaign.This campaign will provide the funding we need to attain both academic excellence and the newcampus. While we have achieved significant results so far, there is still work to be done.The success ofthe campaign is in no small measure a direct result of your continued support and dedication to AUC.

This is an exciting time to be a member of the AUC community. Thank you for your continuedsupport, and I look forward to working with you during the years ahead as we commit to making AUCthe true center of excellence it needs and deserves to be.

his is the last report I write you aschairman.After more than sevenyears in office, in November as

scheduled, I resigned as chairman. I will, ofcourse, remain a trustee. My successor isBoyd Hight, a long-time trustee and apersonal friend of nearly 40 years standing.Boyd will be an outstanding leader of theboard.

Last year we welcomed a new trustee —Mohamed Mansour, a Cairo business leaderwith a deep interest in education in generaland in AUC in particular. Sadly, we lostChuck Hedlund, a former chairman whosecontributions to AUC were seminal. He andhis close colleague, former President DickPedersen, together led the university into itsmodern era.

I would like to reflect, not just on the pastyear, but rather the changes that AUC hasexperienced in the more than 25 years that Ihave been privileged to be a trustee andupon my vision for its future.

When I joined the board,AUC was a small,respected Egyptian liberal arts college, livingfrom hand-to-mouth financially, with fewerthan 2,000 students.Today AUC has nearly5,000 students with many more applicants than it can accept, schools of engineering and computerscience and other disciplines of international renown, in addition to its rich liberal arts and sciencesofferings, a reasonable endowment and a regional reputation for academic excellence.

We have come a long way.However, I believe we are poised on the cusp of greatness. Our new campus, scheduled for completion

in 2007, will give us the physical plant in which our growing academic offerings can flourish.We willhave a state-of-the-art campus with the latest in information technology and ecological planning. It willbe a first rate, modern place to teach, learn and do meaningful research.

However, the fundamentals of a great university remain always the same.They are dedicated, excitingteachers and eager, intelligent students.Academic excellence remains our prime focus as we move to aphysical environment that encourages a rich and varied intellectual experience. Under the leadership ofa great president and a superb provost, with a dedicated faculty and staff and a constantly improvingstudent body,AUC can and should become the world-class private university that modern Egypt needsand deserves.

It has been my great privilege to serve as chairman of a fine AUC board of dedicated Egyptians, Saudisand Americans during a time of great progress.Yet, I am confident that, as we Americansungrammatically but expressively, say:

HIGH QUALITY FACULTY

hen Kent Weeks crawled through a narrowpassageway down an opening to what was believedto be a rather insignificant tomb in the Valley of the

Kings, little did he know that he was on the brink of adiscovery that would catapult him into the realm of sciencestardom.

On that hot Tuesday in July of 1989,Weeks uncovered theentrance to KV 5, the single largest tomb in which many ofthe 49 officially recognized sons of Ramses II are believed tohave been buried. It was not until 1995, after five years ofexcavating the first chambers, that Weeks and his team beganto realize the extent of the tomb.With at least 130 chambers,compared with the typical 30 chambers in other tombs in theValley of the Kings, this is perhaps one of Egyptology’s mostcelebrated finds in the last century, second only to HowardCarter’s discovery of King Tut’s tomb in 1922.

Weeks, professor of Egyptology at AUC, has been pursuing acareer he selected at the age of 9. Shortly after earning a

doctorate in Egyptology from Yale University,Weeks became director of the University of Chicago OrientalInstitute’s field headquarters in Luxor from 1974 to 1977. It was during this time that Weeks realized the need fora comprehensive map to locate the roughly 62 tombs, temples and other archaeological sites and structures on theTheban West Bank. Hence, the Theban Mapping Project was born in 1978, after Weeks returned to teach at theUniversity of California, Berkeley. It was during his work with the Theban Mapping Project that Weeksdiscovered KV 5.

Today, nearly three decades later, the work of the Theban Mapping Project — housed at AUC — continues,along with the excavation of KV 5, which is now believed to have as many as 150 chambers.Working with hiswife Susan and an international team of archaeologists, conservators, engineers, artists and photographers,Weeksfinds his reward from a sense that his work is “contributing to the longevity of the monuments.”

Last year, Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities asked Weeks’ Theban mapping team to develop acomprehensive master plan for managing and conserving the Valley of the Kings.“Given the condition of themonuments and the pressure they are subjected to, if we don’t do something to protect these monuments, theywill cease to exist,” said Weeks.“Push has come to shove and we have to do something to make sure thesemonuments will still be around for future generations.”

Amid increasing pressure from the 9,000 tourists who visit the valley each day,Weeks hopes that the plan,designed to control tourism, limit traffic and deflect flash floods, will “serve as a model that can be replicated inother areas.” In addition, a plan will also be developed for the roughly 40 mortuary temples beyond the valley.

A mapping project of Pharaonic proportions, ongoing excavation work in the largest tomb ever discovered anda mandate to put in place a plan for the future of the Valley of the Kings are all part of what Weeks sees as a“single goal: the protection of ancient Thebes and an attempt to understand its history.”

Ann Lesch,AUC’s new dean of the School of Humanitiesand Social Sciences, speaks about the Middle East with theknowledge of an expert and the passion of a person who haslived in the region for more than a decade.

“As I immersed myself in the language, culture andsociopolitical issues of the Middle East, I fell in love with it,”she said.

A member of the advisory committee for Human RightsWatch/Middle East and board member and former USdirector of the Palestinian American Research Center, Leschis deeply affected by the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.“It is oneof the most crucial, unresolved and painful issues worldwide,”she noted.

Through her work with the American Friends ServiceCommittee and the Palestinian American Research Center,Lesch has sought to raise awareness of the origins of theconflict and to support research that highlights Palestinianculture and history.Among her numerous publications onMiddle East politics is Origins and Development of the Arab-Israeli Conflict, which is co-authored by AUC political scienceProfessor Dan Tschirgi and is currently being updated.

“My aim is to make people aware of Palestinian issues andkeep Palestine on the agenda,” she said.

An activist in her own right, Lesch has initiated several keyprograms that affect the lives of numerous people in theMiddle East.At the Ford Foundation, where she served forfour years, she initiated programs in international relations,refugee studies and human rights, in conjunction withuniversities and non-governmental organizations in Egypt,Sudan, Lebanon and Palestine.At the Middle East StudiesAssociation, for which she served as president in 1995, Lesch established the Committee on Academic Freedom

in the Middle East and North Africa, which aims to protectthe rights of scholars and encourage the free exchange ofknowledge and ideas.

Holder of a bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore Collegeand a doctorate from Columbia University, Lesch joinedVillanova University as a political science professor in 1987.There, she headed the Sudan Studies Association and wasassociate director of Villanova’s Center for Arab and Islamicstudies. In 2004, she was awarded the Outstanding FacultyResearch Award from Villanova for her research on politicalissues in the Middle East.

Equally at home in the water as she is in the classroom,Moshira Hassan, a marine biologist, speaks fervently aboutwhat she calls her main interest in life — coral reefs.

In 2000, Greenpeace selected Hassan as “one of the 100heroes of the last 100 years” for her work in the area of coralreef conservation.Today, she is in her third year of teachingbiology at AUC after coming from a global career inconsultancy for various organizations in her field.

Hassan has done work in almost every imaginable spot inEgypt where coral reef conservation is an issue, from Aqabaall the way down to the Sudanese border. She has alsoworked in every country in the Red Sea region exceptEritrea.

She is mainly interested in the preservation of biodiversity,coastal zone management and marine protected areas.Withher husband Georg Heiss, Hassan has coordinated theestablishment of the European branch of Reef Check, aninternational organization devoted to the preservation ofcoral reefs.

Rooted in academia and closely tied to the practical worldof business and industry,Tarek Hatem, professor ofmanagement, finds his “real joy” in transferring hisexperience to his students through hands-on applications.

The former University of Colorado professor, whointegrates academia, practical experience and research,structures his courses in a way that compels his students totackle real situations through case studies.“I’m glad to beclosely linked to the business community while I teach,” saidHatem, a consultant to several international organizationsincluding the European Union, the United States Agency forInternational Development and the Industrial ModernizationCenter.“This allows me to share with my studentsinformation about what is happening in the world today andwhat they can expect to see once they graduate.”

Currently, Hatem is undertaking research in the field ofhuman resources in Egypt.“In the international businessenvironment there are many factors that could affect humanresource development due to the integration with a globalmarket,” he said. He has conducted research on the effects ofculture in the business environment in both Egypt and theUnited States and is widely published in this area.

Speaking on his move to Egypt after having taught in theUnited States, Hatem finds teaching in Egypt more enjoyablethan elsewhere.“I can relate more culturally to the studentsand I feel that my contribution here is higher and moresignificant,” he said.

Hatem is the chairman of the Management ConsultantsAssociation in Egypt.At AUC he has taught courses rangingfrom strategic business management to small business and

entrepreneurship to international business. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Orascom ConstructionIndustries, the Executive Committee of Management Education Division, the US Academy of Management andthe US Academy of International Business.

Among her students, Hassan is dynamic, passing on to them her contagious enthusiasm. She has designed anintensive field course dedicated to understanding the environmental biology of the Red Sea throughexperiencing the reefs.

“I feel that a truly informed opinion on the necessity of reef conservation can come only after physically,mentally and emotionally experiencing coral reefs,” she said.

In Egypt, the challenge is to increase awareness and interest in the issue.“Many people don’t know how toswim and have never put their heads under the water; hence they don’t know anything about what the reefsare,” she said.

Hassan is a member of Amnesty International, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, theInternational Society for Reef Studies and an elected member on the Scientific and Technical AdvisoryCommittee of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network.

Salah El Haggar, mechanical engineering professor at AUC and vice president of the Association for theProtection of the Environment (APE), is a full-time environmentalist, even when he is teaching.

“I try to bring life to the lecture by engaging students in case studies and real-life examples from thecommunity,” he said.“Beyond developing equations and theoretical models, it is important for students to beexposed to people who live in poverty and to play a role in enhancing their living conditions.That is the onlyway development will ensue.”

El Haggar and his students are often out in the field, developing technology to recycle waste into usableproducts. Much of the machinery they developed is now used by the APE in its recycling programs.

But El Haggar did not stop there. He initiated a unique project for the recycling of organic and non-biodegradable waste, or “waste of waste” as he calls it, to make products such as wheels, road ramps, tables, pots,pothole covers and sidewalk blocks.

“This waste of waste used to be dumped in garbage areas, causing air, water and land pollution. Now we canmake use of it and in a non-costly way,” he said. So far, El Haggar and his students have developed recyclingsystems for most of degradable and non-biodegradable waste in Egypt’s poor areas.

Having roamed the Middle East for 16 years as a professionaljournalist for international news networks, Hanzada Fikry,lecturer at the journalism and mass communicationdepartment, looks upon journalism as a way of helping tobring about justice.

“Journalism is a passion and a cause,” she said.“Bysearching for the truth and relaying it to people, journalistscontribute to decision making and may change things thatare wrong in society.”

With a bachelor’s and master’s from AUC, Fikry embarkedon a career that took her from the US-based ABC newsnetwork to United Press International news agency to TheTimes of London, covering international wars, political strife,riots and demonstrations. During the 2003 war in Iraq, sheserved with the United Nations High Commissioner forRefugees (UNHCR) as senior regional public informationofficer for the Middle East, informing Arab media worldwideabout the refugee situation during the war. Since her work

with the UNHCR, Fikry began to give professional workshops on public relations and public information inEgypt and the Middle East.

Hoping to instill a sense of professionalism in buddingjournalists, Fikry has taught journalism courses at AUC forthe past nine years while working as a freelance journalist.Sensing a gap in the curriculum, she initiated two courses inthe journalism and mass communication department.Thefirst,Advanced Mass Media Writing, introduces students towriting for print, broadcast, opinion editorials, public relationsand advertising.

Through the second course, Radio Journalism, Fikry startedthe first and only radio unit at the department, wherestudents produce news and programs and put them on theInternet to be broadcast inside and outside the university.AUC Internet radio was the first academic Internet broadcastin the Middle East.Around 35 graduates of this class are nowworking in radio stations worldwide, and many others are intelevision. Currently, Fikry is working on establishing anAUC radio station that would be broadcast in the MiddleEast region via satellite.

A journalist and scriptwriter, Fikry’s main concern is to shedlight on the “pressing” social and economic issues facing theMiddle East, including poverty, education, health care and theenvironment.“Everyone has a contribution to make tosociety,” she said.

Technology, El Haggar’s schedule is busy with projects aimedat upgrading environmental conditions in Egypt.Theseinclude spreading and promoting organic chemical-freefarming, developing safe techniques to handle hospital waste,using aquatic floating weeds as a source of energy andmaking industrial production clean and non-polluting.

El Haggar is keen to involve his students in all theseprojects, believing that “youth are a major driving force indevelopment.” Many of his students have continued in hispath, actively volunteering in non-governmentalorganizations all over the country.

top priority on AUC’s agenda for excellence,academic integrity has been rapidly gainingmomentum over the past year.With a

committee to deal with violations, student-runcampaigns and a binding honor code that includesstudents, faculty and staff, academic integrity isflourishing at all levels.

A member of Duke University’s Center forAcademic Integrity,AUC defines academicintegrity as a commitment, even in the face ofadversity, to five fundamental values: honesty, trust,fairness, respect and responsibility.Working topromote the acceptance and adoption of thesevalues,AUC established the Task Force onAcademic Integrity with a mandate to assess andfoster academic integrity across campus.

Beyond simply being a mechanism to reduce oreliminate cheating and plagiarism, the academicintegrity initiative at AUC –– one of the first in theMiddle East –– symbolizes the university’scommitment to a particular ethical and moralstandard.This standard is not only confined tostudents but extends to faculty, staff andadministrators.

“Academic integrity is a collective responsibilityand is a true reflection of an individual’s overallintegrity,” said Mohamed Nagib Abou-Zeid,associate professor of construction engineering andhead of AUC’s academic integrity task force.“There is no clear line that defines the boundariesof academic integrity since it melts into the larger

pot of self-esteem, ethical behavior and soundvalues,” he said.

Nermeen Waly ’04, a political science graduate,former member of the Student Judicial Board (SJB)and last year’s student representative on theacademic integrity task force, views academicintegrity as a basic component of a balanced and

honest personality.“Academicintegrity doesn’t just apply toexams and assignments; itapplies to all fields. It is saying‘no’ in the face of wrong,”she said.

Sharing Waly’s viewpoint,Sara Selim, an accountingjunior, noted,“Academicintegrity is a matter of beinghonest and respectingyourself and your professor.It’s about having aconscience in everything youdo.”

Since its inception lastyear, the task force hasinitiated a series ofeducational, preventive andpunitive measures aimed atpromoting a healthy andethical learning environment.Among these is the adoptionof a Code of Ethics, also apioneering initiative in theregion, which serves as a

statement of values, definitions, violations andpenalties.All members of the AUC community areexpected to sign the code and pledge to it.

“The code is the right route to create campus-wide awareness about academic integrity. It meansthat all members of the AUC community exhibitintegrity, respect and responsibility toward oneanother,” said Mohamed Selim ’04, a journalismand mass communication master’s student, graduaterepresentative in the Academic IntegrityCommittee and former SJB member.

ith more than nine community servicestudent clubs and nearly 400 members,AUC is actively engaged in community

service.AUC students work with some of Egypt’smost underprivileged groups including the elderly,orphans, cancer patients and the poor.

The university is now seeking to expand andcreate a stronger root for these activities through theestablishment of the John D. Gerhart Center for

Public Service and Philanthropy.The center, whichwill consolidate and advance community serviceactivities currently undertaken at AUC, is namedafter AUC’s late President Emeritus John D. Gerhart,who made community service a primary focusduring his tenure from 1998 to 2002.

Under his leadership, the university deepened itscommitment to community service, increasing staffand student activities, as well as developing newservice learning courses in the curriculum.

Today at AUC, efforts have reached far-flung areasof Cairo and the suburban districts, touching andtransforming the lives of those living in these areas.

The center, with the long-term goal ofestablishing a $6 million endowment, will linkstudent volunteer activities, classroom learning,documentation and advocacy activities to promoteexpanded philanthropic giving in the Arab world. Itwill also establish a visiting fellows program andprovide the funds to invite practitioners fromoutside the region who can give international andcomparative perspectives. In addition, a resourcecenter and database on philanthropy will beestablished to provide assistance to companies,families and individuals interested in establishingnew, asset-based foundations.

The first to contribute to the center with a gift of$50,000, Hisham Ahmad Alireza, former executivedirector of Xenel Industries Ltd., views the centeras pertinent for the “understanding and promotionof the Islamic concept of khilafa.” The term khilafa,explained Alireza, refers to the idea that people havebeen entrusted with the care of the earth and musttherefore demonstrate a proactive sense of socialresponsibility. Its closest equivalent in English isvicegerency, combining the meanings of agency,stewardship, trusteeship and handling resources onbehalf of the true owner, he explained.

“I hope this small contribution makes a differencein the manner in which we accept and carry outour responsibilities to those who entrust suchresponsibilities to us,” said Alireza.

for Education and Development (LEAD) program,which is funded by the United States Agency forInternational Development and the EgyptianMinistry of International Cooperation. Thisoutreach program awards distinguished publicschool students in Egypt a full undergraduatescholarship to study at the university.

For Nada Radwan, a LEAD student from thegovernorate of Sohag, coming to AUC was a lifelongdream.“Words cannot describe how happy I am thatmy dream has come true,” she said.At her highschool, Radwan headed a broadcasting club and amusic band and competed in various music andsinging competitions. In addition, she was elected asthe distinguished student among her graduating classand has represented Egypt in international culturalexchange programs.At AUC, she plans to take part intheater performances and join the university choir.

“I feel that AUC is the right place for me becauseof its emphasis on education for the sake of learningand its diversity in extracurricular activities,” shesaid.“One can definitely grow and develop in suchan atmosphere.”

Through the LEAD program, 162 public schoolstudents like Radwan will be given the knowledge,training and skills needed for them to becomeactive players in Egypt’s development. Undergoinga rigorous selection process, all of the students — a

male and female from each of Egypt’s 27governorates — have demonstrated exceptionalleadership potential.The selection criteria for theprogram, which will bring 54 students to AUCeach year for a period of three consecutive years, isbased on academic standing, participation inextracurricular activities, performance on AUC’sentrance examinations and personal interviews.

During their university years, each LEAD studentwill be required to take part in a community service

student club, attend aninternship program in thesummer, participate in aregional conference and helpset up an annual youthconference at AUC. Inparallel with their academiclife, students will attend amanagement developmentprogram, and theoutstanding among themwill spend a semester abroad.

“I feel confident beingchosen,” said Sameh ElWaraky, a LEAD studentfrom Kafr El Sheikh.“I likebeing in an atmospherewhere there is freedom ofthought and the chance tobe exposed to differentnationalities, cultures andreligions.”

Another LEAD recipient, Ramadan Ahmed fromthe governorate of Aswan, is a dynamic and self-motivated student. He was president of the StudentUnion at his high school and member of anorganization aimed at building future leaders. He alsoparticipated in an environmental project to addgreenery to his governorate.To him, coming to AUCis a big leap forward.

“My whole governorate is proud of me, and I’mvery happy because I’ve always wanted to study in aplace where there is liberty to express one’s thoughtsand ideas,” he said.

alma El Maddah always wanted a different styleof education than the one she received atschool.Though she liked her school, she had

dreams of joining an international educationalinstitution that would expand her careeropportunities. She worked hard and was chosen asthe recipient of the Egyptian American Bank (EAB)Public School Scholarship.Today, El Maddah is abusiness administration senior with a high honorsranking and job opportunities in the corporate andbanking sectors.

“This scholarship was abig motive for me to excelduring my universityyears,” said El Maddah.“Iwanted to prove thatstudents from publicschools are no less thanprivate school students.Many people used to deter

me saying that I could not compete at an Americanuniversity, but I took it as a challenge.”

Like El Maddah, students who have received apublic school scholarship are among AUC’s topperformers. Since the creation of the Public SchoolScholarship Fund (PSSF) in 1990, more than 70percent of its recipients have graduated with high orhighest honors. Some have received the President’sCup, awarded to students with the highest gradepoint average in the graduating class. Supportedthrough the contributions of corporations, as well asgifts from individuals, the PSSF grants fullscholarships every year to 15 of Egypt’s most

outstanding public school students with the aim ofmaking an AUC education accessible to a diversepool of students.

AUC’s late President Emeritus John Gerhart wasinstrumental in pushing forward public schoolscholarships at AUC, believing that it is important toexpand access to an AUC education and give achance to the brightest students to join theuniversity. He personally initiated the John GerhartPublic School Scholarship Fund, and after his death,the John and Gail Gerhart Fund was established.

In addition to the fund, annual and endowedscholarships have also been established in the namesof corporations and individuals who fully sponsorthe education of one or more public schoolstudents. Last year, there were 12 public schoolscholarships named by corporations and individuals,including EAB, GlobalSantaFe and Galal El Zorba.

“EAB is delighted to participate in the PSSF andsupport AUC’s efforts in giving a chance for thevery best candidates in Egypt to be part of itsstudent body,” said EAB Managing DirectorRoderick Richards.

El Maddah, who was an active member ofnumerous student clubs at the university, appreciatesthe chance given to her.“Without this scholarship, Iwould have joined a national university likeeveryone else and would not have beendistinguished. But now, I feel I have achievedsomething, and my whole family is proud of me,”she said.

Public School Scholarship, which was established bythe Chairman of Nile Clothing Company and theEgyptian Exporters’Association Galal El Zorba. Ininitiating this scholarship, El Zorba’s main aim wasthe empowerment of Egypt’s youth.

“I believe that education is one of the basic toolsthat can open many doors in someone’s life,” ElZorba said.“I felt that helping to make an AUCeducation available to someone who may not haveotherwise been able to attend such an institutionwas a rare opportunity for me to give something

back and hopefully make a difference in a youngperson’s life.”

And the scholarship did make a difference to thestudents.

“This scholarship has changed my life,” said Hany.Labeled by his elementary school teachers as a

genius, Hany developed an interest in computers atthe age of 10. Over the years, as he became moreacquainted with computers, he had hopes ofstudying computer science in depth at a reputableand accredited institution.Thanks to thisscholarship, he was able to pursue his goal.

“I always wished to study computer science atAUC because it is the best university in Egypt. Ifeel confident being chosen and I’m eager to provemy capabilities,” Hany said with enthusiasm.

For Mahmoud Abdel Moneim, the secondrecipient of the Galal El Zorba scholarship, beingadmitted to AUC is an opportunity that comesonce in a lifetime.An active school student whoparticipated in regional cultural exchange programsand who took part in a wide range of

extracurricular activities,Abdel Moneim wanted tostudy in a place that would help him grow anddevelop on both the academic and personal fronts.

“I wanted to enter a university where I couldhone my communication and organizational skillsthrough activities and learn for the sake of learning,not for the sake of memorization,” he said.“Beingat AUC as a recipient of this scholarship makesme feel proud and gives me impetus to competeand excel.”

Also feeling grateful for the opportunity to learn

and not just memorize was Fatema Fouda, acomputer science junior and recipient of theGlobalSantaFe Endowed Public School Scholarship,which was established by GlobalSantaFe, a leadingoffshore drilling contractor.“I never liked schoolbecause we were only studying what’s in thetextbook to spill out during the exam; we weren’tlearning much,” Fouda said.

At AUC, Fouda said she learned the true meaningof education.“I now study because I want to learnand gain knowledge. I do optional assignmentsbecause I am interested, not because they counttoward my final grade,” she explained. Hoping toinstill change and make high-quality educationaccessible to the rich and poor alike, Fouda plans topursue graduate studies abroad in the field ofeducation and development.

“That is what my country needs,” she said.“Education in Egypt needs to be reformed so it isnot as torturous as it is nowadays. I believe that agood education can empower youth and makethem active, productive citizens.”

Launched last semester with 29 students, the Masterof Economics in International Development isdesigned for students seeking in-depthunderstanding and knowledge in the field ofdevelopment.

Enthusiastic to play a role in the development ofEgypt,Azza Shafei, a graduate student enrolled inthe program, hopes to one day play a direct role inalleviating societal burdens such as illiteracy andpoverty.“The era we live in now is that ofglobalization, where every developing country

needs to have citizens that are acquainted withthe changing world and are productive,” sheexplained, stressing the timeliness of the programand its importance.

A recent graduate of economics from AUC, Shafeifeels that many students have been waiting for thelaunch of the program and that one of the greatthings about it is that it is not in isolation from theoutside world.“It’s important to see what the statusof Egypt is in relation to other countries and to tryto adopt solutions while looking at cultural andsocial considerations,” she said.

hile Hend Ragab worked as a successfulprofessional simultaneous interpreter inGermany, she always knew that she wanted

to return to Cairo for more specialized training and abigger goal.“My dream has always been to work asan interpreter with the United Nations, and theCenter for Adult and Continuing Education helpedme realize this dream.”

Ragab, who is certified as an interpreter by theGerman government, spent three months at AUC’sCenter for Adult and Continuing Education (CACE)studying a specialized course in UN terminology.Ragab selected the CACE because it offers anintensive English-Arabic course in this specialization.During her short stay in Egypt, she was also activelytaking part in her professional career in variousconferences in Cairo.“I was really lucky to receiveseveral job offers while I was still studying at theCACE,” she said.

Committed to the principle that learning is alifelong process and that through educationindividuals and communities can develop, the CACEhas changed the lives of people like Ragab. CACEprovides more than 28,000 people — ages 24 to 44— with the opportunity to enrich their professionaland personal lives through a range of courses anddiplomas in everything from English language,computer literacy and programming to accountingand management.

of Extension, CACE also provides customizedtraining services for the public and private sectors,including multinational corporations in Egypt andthe Middle East.

The program includes various components fromthe fields of sociology, political science andbusiness, as well as hands-on experience in thefield of development.

“The students will not sit within the confines ofAUC and write a thesis but have to do a practicumwithin an international organization.They areplunged into the real world,” said Adel Beshai,

economics professor and head of the program.After they graduate, most students would be able

to work in development-related institutions at themacro or micro level.These include UnitedNations agencies, the World Bank, bilateral donorrepresentative offices/projects, non-governmentalorganizations and development-financeinstitutions.

It was Aristotle that got Mahmoud Moustafainterested in politics back in 1998.“I lovedphilosophy and was an avid reader of Aristotle’spolitics.According to Aristotle, the lawman was thestudent of the ruling science, and lawgivers were thecenter of the political association.”

Today, Moustafa works as a public prosecutor of themid-Cairo district and is one of the 25 lawyers andlaw school graduates enrolled in AUC’s new Masterof Laws (LLM) program in international andcomparative law.

The program, the first to offer American-style legaleducation in the Arab world, has an emphasis on thelegal framework for economic and politicalliberalization. It is named in memory of the lateIbrahim Shihata, general counsel and senior vicepresident of the World Bank, who singled out legaleducation as the core obstacle to advancing the ruleof law and ensuring the region’s development.

Courses offered in the program include EuropeanUnion law, Islamic reform, transnational business andtrade laws. In addition, short courses are offered bydistinguished visiting professors of law and legalpractitioners from the Arab world, Europe and theUnited States.

“The start of the LLM program at AUC gave theopportunity to many of us who would like to receivequality legal education, yet are unable to travel due towork obligations, to pursue the degree in Egypt.Youno longer have to give up your dreams andexpectations,” said Moustafa.

In 2002, Moustafa graduated from CairoUniversity Law School, ranking eighth in his classof 4,000 students, which included the Arabic,French and English departments. Before becoming

a public prosecutor, Moustafa worked in a leadinglaw firm in Cairo.

He likens his current position in the publicprosecution’s office to that of a military officer.“Thearmy protects the country from foreign threats andthe public prosecutors protect the country from itsinternal threats,” he explains, adding that those whoare not in the field “live in a bubble, sheltered fromthe country’s real problems.”

Simultaneously with the LLM program, Moustafais pursuing a postgraduate diploma in internationallaw at Cairo University. His link with AUC beganduring his undergraduate years as an activeparticipant in the Model Arab League and ModelUnited Nations conferences. He has received 26academic awards from Cairo University, includingbest student awards in Islamic jurisprudence, laws ofinternational conflict and criminal law.

After graduating Moustafa plans to join theinternational and cultural cooperation department atthe Ministry of Justice and to pursue his doctoralstudies in Italy in the research fields of comparativeconstitutional law and Islamic reform.

or more than 30 years, international studentsfrom nearly 90 countries worldwide havebeen coming to AUC to learn about Middle

Eastern culture. Students enrolled at the study-abroad program, the Arabic Language Institute (ALI)and the Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA)are seeking to learn Arabic and gain insight into aregion that many feel is largely misinterpreted on aglobal scale.Their aim is to return home with abetter understanding of how they can bridgecultures and create mutual understanding.

CENTER FOR ARABIC STUDY ABROAD

The Center for Arabic Study Abroad is a premierUS university-run program for studying advancedArabic at AUC. It represents a consortium of 27 ofthe United States’ most renowned universities,

including Harvard, Columbia, Princeton, Stanford,Emory, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, New YorkUniversity and the University of Chicago.Established in 1967, the program is aimed atAmerican college-level and graduate students, aswell as Middle East studies professors who have hadat least two years of instruction in Arabic.

Paul Wulfsberg, a CASA student and a politicalscience graduate of Swarthmore College, joined theprogram after studying Arabic in Jordan.“CASA isknown to be a very prestigious program forlearning advanced Arabic, and I wanted to delvemore deeply into the Arabic language. I also wantedto come to Egypt because it is the heart of the Arabworld,” he said.

To Wulfsberg, his experience in Egypt was an“eye-opener.” Immersing himself in Egypt’s mostunderprivileged low-income districts, traveling torural areas and living with a rural family for ninemonths,Wulfsberg was moved by the strong familyties, people’s religious practices and the peacefulnessof the countryside.Taking on a new identity as partof his total immersion in Egyptian society,Wulfsbergnamed himself Khalid.

“I have studied Islam and the Arab world inacademia, but being here showed me how Islam ispracticed in reality and exposed me to a side ofEgyptian culture that I haven’t seen before,” he said,adding that the Arabic he acquired through CASAwas instrumental in helping him interact withpeople easily.

For some students, the desire to learn Arabic andgain knowledge about Middle Eastern culturemeant coming to Egypt more than once, as was thecase with Elizabeth Rosenberg, a CASA studentand holder of a master’s in Near Eastern studiesfrom New York University. Rosenberg came toAUC this year for the third time. She had comebefore as a study-abroad student, then as an ALIstudent and has now joined CASA because shewants to study advanced Arabic.

“When I came before, I enjoyed my stay in Cairoand learned a lot about Egyptian culture and socialrelations,” she said.“I decided to join CASAbecause I wanted to take classes in advanced Arabicwith teachers who closely monitor my progress.”

Rosenberg’s story with the Middle East beganwhen she was 16 years old.At that time, shetraveled to Palestine as a study-abroad student andlearned about the country’s history, culture andsociology. Shortly after, Rosenberg decided that anycareer for her had to be linked to the Middle East.In 2003, she joined the Students for Justice inPalestine group.

“In the United States, there is a lack ofinformation about the Middle East and the Arabside of things,” she explained.“I feel responsible toshare information that is not hysterical, racist oradding to a fear of Islam and the Arab world.”

Rosenburg plans to join a think tank or policygroup in the United States and engage in MiddleEastern political analysis.“I want to write for apublic audience and advise policy makers on thispart of the world,” she said.“My experiences herehave shaped what I want to do in life and openedup my eyes to a culture that I have come to respectand appreciate.”

ARABIC LANGUAGE INSTITUTE

Offering intensive courses in modern standard andEgyptian colloquial Arabic for more than 30 years,the Arabic Language Institute attracts non-Arabicspeakers from different countries around the globe.Students, businessmen, diplomats and scholars fromthe United States,Africa,Asia and Europe enroll inthe program to learn contemporary Arabic firsthandfrom professional instructors.

Bram Wiseberg, an ALI student and graduate ofMiddle East studies from Columbia University,chose to study Arabic at the ALI because of AUC’slong-standing position as an institute of highereducation.“AUC has the best reputation in theregion,” he said.

Wiseberg’s decision to major in Middle Eaststudies stemmed out of his long-time fascinationwith the region’s history.“The Middle East is acradle of civilization and culture,” he said.“Iwanted to study it to be able to understand thedifferences and commonalities within Arab andMuslim culture.”

As Wiseberg understood more about Arab culture,he became interested in mastering the language.“Language is the gate to understanding culture, andthe only way to grasp a language is to live in thecountry in which it is spoken,” he explained.

From conversations with taxi drivers and peoplein traditional coffee shops to his Arabic classes andinteractions with AUC students,Wiseberg improvedhis language skills.After returning to the UnitedStates this summer, he plans to pursue graduatestudies in international relations with a focus on theMiddle East. His hope is to become a professor ofpolitical science and Middle Eastern history.“Part

of my credibility as a teacher is that I have actuallylived in the region,”Wiseberg said.

Angela Schmetzer, an ALI student and graduate ofHarvard, came to AUC from Morocco, where shealso studied Arabic.Wanting to enhance herknowledge, Schmetzer enrolled at the ALI, whereshe is currently taking classes in Arabic languageand literature.“I want to be able to read Arabicnovels firsthand because I believe Arabic literature isvery interesting, especially works by Syrian andLebanese authors,” she said.

But Schmetzer’s stay wasn’t just about studyingliterature; it gave her a unique perspective into Arabculture.Through many of the ALI-organized trips,Schmetzer interacted with people in different partsof Egypt –– from Luxor and Aswan in the south toSharm El Sheikh and Ismailia in the north –– andeventually came to realize that the typical Arab isnot the one she read about back home.

“The texts I studied portrayed Arabs as eitherfundamentalists or liberals, not as moderate humanbeings who have their own hopes and aspirations,”she said.“Living here gave me a uniqueopportunity to see what Middle Eastern people arereally like.”

STUDY-ABROAD PROGRAM

Hailing from different colleges and universitiesaround the world, study-abroad students spend asemester or year at AUC. Because AUC isinternationally accredited and has formalagreements with several institutions of highereducation, these students are able to transfer creditsto their home universities. Many of the studentscome to AUC to take classes in Egyptology,political science or Middle East studies.

For Andrew Mackin, a Native American(Mississippi Choctaw) study-abroad studentmajoring in history and Middle East studies at

Dartmouth College, coming to Egypt was animportant step to understanding Arab culture andpolitics. Ever since the eruption of the firstPalestinian intifada, Mackin developed a specialinterest in Arab politics generally and thePalestinian-Israeli struggle specifically. His intent, hesaid, is to return home with better knowledge andawareness to be able to rectify misperceptions aboutthe Arab world.

“I want to do everything I can do to properlyrepresent the Palestinian cause in the United Statesand to share the facts I’ve learned.Without the timeI spent in Egypt and at AUC, it would have beenimpossible to study the Middle East in this way,”he said.

During his stay in Egypt, Mackin visited Lebanon,Syria, Jordan and Palestine. Of all these places,Palestine was closest to heart.

“Palestinians are a repressed and occupied groupof people, and I am originally American Indian ––a minority group in the US that continues to gothrough similar situations and repressions as thePalestinian people.”

Showing his solidarity with Palestinians, Mackinattended Yasser Arafat’s funeral in Ramallah and themilitary ceremony held for him in East Jerusalem.After graduation, he plans to do humanitarian workin Palestine or return to the United States andwork for his tribe in a social justice or law capacity.

MIDDLE EAST STUDIES PROGRAM

As current events have raised internationalawareness of the need to understand the Arabworld,AUC’s Middle East studies graduate programhas seen a marked increase in international students.

Randy Crisler believes that coming to Cairo andbeing part of the program is drastically differentthan “studying out of a textbook” in his home stateof Arizona.

Crisler, who has a bachelor’s degree in MiddleEast studies from the University of Arizona, said:“Before I came here, I studied modern standardArabic for three years out of a book, not talkingto a person other than my instructor. I didn’tknow how to say ‘I wanted to go to the store’ butcould say ‘the president of Egypt attended ameeting with so and so.’ ”

Planning to continue living in Egypt after hegraduates next spring, Crisler enjoys the diverseperspectives that his fellow students bring intoclass discussions.“It is very touching and insightfulto be in a classroom where the discussions aremore personal,” he said.

The Middle East studies program takes aninterdisciplinary approach to coursework includinga variety of fields such as economics, politics,sociology, anthropology and history.“No onediscipline could deal with the issues of the world.

The Middle East studies program embodies themission of AUC — a bridge between East andWest — at a time when we need that the most,”said Bahgat Korany, director of the program.

Adding that it is designed for students with littleknowledge of the region, Korany said that nearly85 percent of the students enrolled areinternational.

FORCED MIGRATION AND REFUGEE STUDIES

PROGRAM

Mohammed Berray, a biologist by training, hasdecided to give up his career and dedicate his lifeto easing the plight of his home country’s refugeeproblems. Leaving war-struck Sierra Leone, Berraydecided to come to Cairo to obtain a graduatediploma from AUC’s Forced Migration andRefugee Studies program (FMRS).

As the only postgraduate degree in the regionthat has a teaching component in refugee studies,

the program is heavily dependent on thecontributions of donors. It is designed to meet theneeds of individuals interested in working withrefugees or issues related to forced migrationwithin a broader social science context.

The FMRS program has three main areas ofresearch: urban refugees, immigration policies andreproductive health studies. “The fact that Egyptstraddles two continents makes this program allthe more important. Its proximity to the4Mediterranean makes it a destination for manyrefugees, especially those who hope to resettle inEurope,” said FMRS Director Fatah Azzam.

Like most of the students enrolled in theprogram, Berray has firsthand experience with therefugee community in Cairo.“We have a verysmall Sierra Leonean refugee community in Cairo,and my role is to help with their local integrationwithin Egyptian society and facilitate their access

to legal refugee practitioners for subsequentinterviews with the UNHCR,” he explained.

Although he has been working with the refugeecommunity for several years, Berray believes thathis FMRS diploma will provide him with thesound legal framework he needs to help refugeeswith objectivity and knowledge.

“The word refugee itself is a legal term. Onlywell-trained and experienced individuals in therefugee field will be able to best serve traumatizedrefugees,” he said.“The FMRS program helps meunderstand who a refugee is and how best tocompromise the needs of a refugee with theobligations of the state. It also helps meunderstand the feelings and needs of refugees andto come to terms with how they are traumatized,”he said.

Berray’s future plans include working to rebuildhis hometown, which has “been through one ofthe world’s worst humanitarian crises ever.”

Last February marked the ceremonial beginning ofnew leadership for the university, with PresidentDavid Arnold officially inaugurated as the 10thpresident of AUC.

Board of Trustees Chairman Paul Hannon praisedArnold’s distinguished career in internationaleducation and development, saying that his richprofessional experience has provided him with theskills necessary to guide AUC to its state-of-the-artcampus in New Cairo.

“We look to you to lead us to the dream of ourfounding fathers –– to lead us to our new campus–– and to fulfill the dreams of our founders,” saidHannon.“You have started off superbly, and we areconfident you will fulfill this challenge.”

Arnold’s inauguration was celebrated in an officialceremony that brought together former AUCpresidents, government ministers, ambassadors,presidents of national universities, as well as faculty,staff and students.At the ceremony,Arnold waspresented with a 14-karat gold medallion bearing theuniversity emblem.

Capitalizing on AUC’s role in the region as a centerfor education and cultural exchange, then Minister ofHigher Education and Scientific Research MoufidShehab wished Arnold a successful and fruitfulpresidency that would “crown”AUC’s distinguishedefforts over the past 85 years.

Arnold emphasized quality as the path for AUC tobecome a world-class university.“Maintaining highstandards and striving for excellence are consistentthemes in all our efforts,” he said.“Our trustees,faculty, staff and administrators all understand thatquality is what defines AUC and makes it the specialplace it has become.”

In line with AUC’smission of enhancingscientific researchamong its scholarlycommunity, theuniversity has signeda mutual agreement of cooperation forscientific research,training and theexchange of expertisewith Egypt’s NationalResearch Center(NRC).

“We are committedto spearheading an

interdisciplinary research and science center,” saidPresident David Arnold.“We welcome the chanceto cooperate with the National Research Center aswe advance work on this center, and in the near

future in our new campus, where it will serve asan incubator for research development throughoutthe country.”

The agreement’s scope includes working oncommon projects, co-supervision of academictheses, training and the exchange of expertise. Oneof the prominent areas of collaboration between thetwo institutions will be the creation of a 1,000 acreagricultural-based community in Farafra in theNew Valley. In addition, joint initiatives are plannedin the areas of nanotechnology, biotechnology andenvironmental sciences.

The NRC is a prominent research institution inEgypt, with advanced scientific facilities and variedexpertise in academic and applied research.Highlighting the importance of the agreement,NRC Director Hani El Nazer views thepartnership as an opportunity to “bridge theknowledge gap” between existing research and theneeds for new industry.

AUC’s research flagship, the Social ResearchCenter (SRC), celebrated its 50th anniversarythis year crowning half a century’s work inreaching out to the local community and joininghands with community leaders to tackleeverything from female illiteracy to the ruraltransformation in Upper Egypt.

Serving as a premier social science center inEgypt and the Middle East, the SRC plays animportant role in providing service to Egypt, aswell as being actively involved in what it callscapacity building: responding to the regionalneed for social science skills to facilitate theguiding of public policies.This includes thetraining of health professionals from all aroundthe Arab world.

Early in the 1960s, the SRC pioneered anethnographic survey of Nubian villages to tracktheir livelihood, customs and several other aspectsof their distinct and creative culture, prior totheir move to a new location after theconstruction of the Aswan High Dam.

Today, the SRC not only holds projects inEgypt, but also helps promote an understanding ofEgyptian culture abroad.An example is anethnographic exhibition at the MoesgaardMuseum in Denmark, which focused on thesocial and cultural life in Upper Egypt and wasthe culmination of over a decade of researchcollaboration between the SRC and severalDanish institutions.

“It’s amazing how such a small institution cantouch the lives of such a large number ofindividuals,” said Hoda Rashad, the SRC director.

Established in 1953 with support from the FordFoundation, the SRC conducts and supportssocial science research programs in Egypt and theMiddle East, focusing primarily on populationissues, rural development, human settlement,health, the environment and gender.

AUC established the Science and TechnologyCenter, which serves all departments of the Schoolof Sciences and Engineering. Initial researchactivities at the center, which supports a variety ofnano-science and technology-oriented projects,have focused on material characterization andadvanced manufacturing techniques.

A painting by AUC art graduate Yasmine Khalilfeaturing medieval Arab scientists adorns thecenter’s wall and serves as a reminder that “whilewe are engaging in Western science, it is importantto remember that during the Middle Ages most ofthe science of the world was in the Arab-Islamicword,” said Fadel Assabghy, dean of the sciences andengineering school.

The first research activity at the center is currentlybeing conducted by Sherif Sedky, associate professorof physics, who is studying local modifications ofthe physical properties of thin films forMicroElectroMechanical Systems applications.Theproject is a joint research endeavor between AUC

and the Inter University Micro Electronic Centerin Belgium.

“We hope that the center will become a scientificresearch hub both on the national and regionallevel,” said Assabghy.

During the 2003-2004 academic year, the first phaseof the AUC’s new campus was completed. Nearly 500acres of land in New Cairo are now fenced, wherebusy bulldozers are a sign that finally, after six years ofdiligent planning and designing,AUC’s new campusis on its way to realization.

Dubbed the “invisible stage” by Vice President forNew Campus Development Hussein El Sharkawy,this phase included the installation of theunderground networks for natural gas, sewage,irrigation and fire fighting, forming a utilities networknearly 4 kilometers long.Throughout the year, nearly350 workers worked on the site at any given day tocomplete the work that was later buried

underground, allowing for the next stage of above-the-ground construction to begin.

Also completed was the construction of a 1.6kilometer-long and 5.5 meter-wide service tunnelwhich runs like a vein throughout the campus withan underground network of roads or passageways.Thetunnel, wide enough to accommodate two largeelectric cars side-by-side, will allow for the transportof materials and supplies, facilitating intra-campusmovement for services.

With the initial site preparation phase completed inearly 2004, the remainder of the academic year wasfocused on the selection of the main contractor forthe new campus.

Self-made businessman Mourad Sami knew when hegraduated from the political science department in1988 that he wouldn’t work in his field.“I’ve alwayswanted to have my own business,” he said.

Diligently, he pursued a career in business with apassion.Almost 16 years from the day he graduated,

Sami is a partner in 15 local restaurants includingTabouleh,Abou El Sid and Sangria. He’s also themanaging partner of Ferromisr, a commercial agencycompany, chairman of the Sakkara Real Estate andfounder of the only privately owned sea rescuecompany in the world, Search & Rescue.

For Sami, AUC was life changing.“For the firsttime in my life I was able to choose what I wanted tostudy ... This had a deep impact on me, and for thatI’ll always be grateful,” he said.

This year, Sami joined the President’s Club, aninternational network of alumni, parents and friendswho each year give gifts of $1,000 or more to AUC.“The university experience was unique in offeringme the chance to know people from all over theworld. It’s essential to be grateful to my roots, and toremember that the education I received played animportant role,” he said.

Supporting AUC and helping it realize its dream ofbecoming a world-class university, the CommercialInternational Bank of Egypt (CIB) has pledged

$100,000 toward naming a 75-seat CIB Classroom onAUC’s new campus and another $100,000 to name aCIB Fountain.

“At CIB, we believe that more corporateinvolvement is especially needed in the educationalprocess in Egypt to ensure a right match between theneeds of the corporate world and the quality ofgraduates,” said Hisham Ezz Al-Arab, chairman andmanaging director of CIB Egypt.“AUC represents anoutstanding investment in business education and wewish the university all the best in maintaining thetradition of excellence for which it is so well known.We hope that our small contribution would assist inadequately preparing the university for the challengesof the future.”

In honor of the late Nadia Younes, the UnitedNations administrator who died in the August 2003bombing of the UN headquarters in Iraq,AUC hasestablished the Nadia Younes Memorial Fund.Contributions to the fund will be used to establishan annual lecture and for an award in public andhumanitarian service, in addition to naming aconference and meeting room in the Model UnitedNations Center on AUC’s new campus.

“Nadia was a very dedicated, independent womanwho was passionate about the UN and who gotvery involved in humanitarian activities, not justinternational politics.That’s why she was greatlyappreciated and admired in the UN,” said Younes’sbrother Fouad.“She was also the type of personwho could think on her feet and was a real problemsolver.”

Younes was born in Egypt in 1946. She held abachelor’s in English literature from CairoUniversity and a master’s in political science andinternational relations from New York University.She worked for more than 30 years at the UnitedNations.

rom a financial perspective the year under review did not start auspiciously.The continuousdecline of the Egyptian pound against the US dollar continued through the first fiscal quarteruntil a gap of more than a pound had opened between the official and unofficial exchange

rates, a particularly unwelcome development for the university’s operations, as it spends significantlymore in dollars than it earns.

Added to the negative impact of the decline in value of the pound was the lower than budgetedenrollment of Egyptian students.While this could be partially offset by higher than anticipatednumbers of non-Egyptian students, annual tuition receipts net of scholarships and financial aiddeclined from $40.5 to $39.1 million.

Beginning from the second quarter onwards, the Egyptian pound began a steady and sustainedrecovery against the dollar.This had a beneficial impact on the university’s operational performance,which was further assisted by good growth in adult education income, research activities and the salesof AUC Press.

Strong fundraising efforts focused on the capital campaign for the new campus.The campaigncontinued to make modest gains throughout the fiscal year and added an additional $6.8 milliontoward its $100 million goal.

AUC’s endowments also made steady, if unspectacular, progress.A booming Egyptian stock market,coupled with newfound stability in the value of the Egyptian pound, resulted in the local currencyendowments contributing the strongest performance for the first time in a number of years.Also, forthe first time since 2000, the total value of our endowments climbed back above $400 million.

Of major significance for funding of the new campus was the award by the United States Agencyfor International Development of a LE 600 million construction grant in September 2003.Theproject recorded another important milestone when, in August 2004, a notice of award was signedwith the selected general contractor, a joint venture between Samsung Corporation of Korea andlocal contractor Samcrete S.A.E.The construction contract was signed in October 2004, and work isscheduled to be completed during the summer of 2007.

The new year has started very favorably. Fall student enrollment exceeded expectations both forEgyptian and non-Egyptian students.The continuing strength of the Egyptian pound, coupled with amore optimistic outlook for the local economy following the major cabinet reshuffle in July, shouldenable the university to produce good results in all areas of its operations.
