There has been a considerable amount of interest in the use of problem-solving tasks in

teaching a foreign language for a number of years (Nunan, 1989). According to Von

Glasersfeld (1995), a constructivist approach to education, i.e. an approach in which learners

build up their knowledge, is best put into practice by presenting issues, concepts and tasks in

the form of problems to be explored in dialogue rather than as information to be ingested and

reproduced. Moreover, a control component in motivation to learn is the individual learner’s

feeling of competence and self-efficacy, which can best be gained by working out one’s own

solutions to problems. I have used this constructivist methodology and have found it useful in

helping learners at different levels to cope with long and cognitively demanding tasks. In the

first stage the teacher sets the tasks and explains the common goal: i.e. ‘Did Louis XIV have a

healthy lifestyle?’. Individually the students will then read the text and underline words and

sentences that they understand which will give a more posit ive approach to the reading. Then,

in pairs, they compare their findings and the exchange of information should lead to social

learning. The same process follows with groups of four, and finishes with whole class

discussion.

Index of materials Texte d’introduction: This text, enriched with an authent ic quotation, is designed to give the pupils a short overview of the eating habits of Louis XIV. The intention of this text is to make the pupils think for the first time about the central question of the lesson (‘Did Louis XIV have a healthy lifestyle?’) Un jour typique du roi: This short list of events which used to occur quite regularly in the life of Louis XIV is used to show the apparent diversity in the king’s daily routine but once more to hint at the central question. Le menu du roi Luois XIV: The third material which contains a lot of unknown vocabulary is designed to reflect upon the first text used which already hinted at the unhealthy lifestyle of Louis XIV. Unknown words can be clarified by means of the second menu du roi which contains images of some food items which were the king’s favorite. Ce qu’on avait et ce qu’on n’avait pas encore à cette époque-là … : The aim of this short list containing available and unavailable objects of that t ime is on the one hand to make the pupils understand which conveniences and inconveniences were prominent in those days and on the other hand to introduce new vocabulary. The illustrations which go along with this sheet serve as support for the correct understanding of the new words. Louis XIV – Worksheet: This worksheet then sums up all previous learning activities and checks on aspects such as time, new vocabulary and text comprehension.

Au temps du Louis XI (surnommé le Roi Soleil), il n’y avait pas de salle à manger. Le repas était servi sur une table dans la chambre du roi ou dans une antichambre. Les officiers y assistaient debout. Seul le roi et Monsieur, le frère du roi, avaient le droit de s’asseoir. Evidemment, ils ne mangeaient pas tout. On revendait les restes du repas aux portes du château.

Ce qu’on avait et ce qu’on n’avait pas encore à cette époque-là …

On buvait du thé, on fumait la pipe et on avait déjà une sorte de calculette ; on mangeait des chocolats ; on avait une sorte de taxi ; le microscope existait déjà ; on mangeait des glaces ; on fabriquait du savon pour laver les vêtements ; on avait des miroirs presque comme maintenant et on buvait de la bière. On n’avait pas de timbres ; on n’avait pas de thermomètres médicaux ; on n’utilisait pas encore le système métrique : on mesurait toujours en pieds et en pouces, et on ne mangeait pas de pommes de terre. On n’avait pas de chauffage central, on faisait des feux de cheminée partout ; on n’avait pas de salle à manger, on mangeait dans les chambres ou dans les couloirs ; on n’avait pas de tomates ; on n’avait pas de salle de bains, on se lavait dans sa chambre, si on se lavait – et on ne se lavait pas souvent, parce que l’eau était froide et il n’y avait pas d’eau courante. Voilà. C’est tout.
