Personal Statement

In June of 1994 I graduated from East High School in Akron, Ohio. My senior year in high school proved to be the roughest years of my life thus far. I found myself homeless and pregnant. During this time I was slept on strangers’ living room floors, in my 1979 Pontiac, and in homeless shelters. I would go to restaurants just before they closed and ask the manager if they could give me the food that they were going to waste that evening. Despite my situation I always managed to find food and refused to drop out of high school. Before my senior school year came to an end I obtain an apartment. In August of 1994 I gave birth to a son, who died two weeks after he was born. A few months later my aunt who worked as an admissions counselor for Kent State University asked me to go on the road with her to help her to aid in recruiting high school seniors. While on the road with my aunt I realized the importance higher education. The spring of 1995 I enrolled in Kent State University. I saw an experienced college life for the first time through hazy eyes; the loss of my son prevented from experiencing anything as it really was. By the following spring I was on academic probation and dropped out of college. The amount of stress that I was under grew daily to the point that I was committed to the hospital for psychiatric evaluation on four separate occasions over the course of five years.

Personal Statement

Over the years I worked several entry-level jobs and then one day at the age of thirty-one I a catapult in my life. Returning to college was that catapult. One of the bearers that I had created for myself involving returning to school was mathematics. In high school I simply did not understand mathematical concepts; therefore I told myself it was not important. When I made up my mind to return to school I made up my mind that I would not let math prevent my educational growth any longer. Once again I found myself taking developmental math course and relearning the basics. As I progressed in my math course I noticed that when I removed the mental stigma that I had placed on myself concerning math that I was able to understand math. This taught me that my growth and knowledge base was endless. The only reason that I did not succeed in math prior to college was because I convinced myself that I was not a good math student. This confidence and thirst of new knowledge was not contained to just academics, it consumed my life in everything that I did.

Personal Statement

In the same year that I returned to school I began to experiment at home with natural body care products. I decided to research all the information that I could in my spare time learning about natural soap making and other beauty products. I would borrow cosmetology textbooks from the library. I studied, took notes and began to research the references pages in the back of the books. I fact checked all of my sources to see if different sources supported the previous information. Unknowingly, I was doing empirical research. This did not feel like a boring school assignment it felt natural and the right steps that I needed to take to attempt to make my first product. I began to get so meticulous about my methods that I started to record notes that entailed, color, smell, texture, viscosity, functionality and overall performance. This is where my entrepreneurial spirit began to consume me. I found a calming peace about getting lost in data. The day came where I thought that I learned enough information that I could attempt my first product. The first product that I made was a hair gel that performed far more superior than any hair gel that I purchased. The hair gel had one major drawback; it began to spoil after two days. I did not let this discourage me. This set back was a fire in my belly. I needed to find a solution to this problem. Eventually I did and then I began experimenting with other products. I used the resources that I had and could afford.

Personal Statement

Despite my earlier history I never felt the deep need to become a counselor who helps people overcome their issues. Counseling psychology courses did not resonate with me as did social psychology. I took a social psychology course and in this course I was introduced to the field of Industrial/Organizational psychology. I felt that this was the field for me. I felt that in this field I could be all that I now found myself becoming. In I/O psychology I could be a researcher, a leader, an entrepreneur, and inventor. The last five years that I have been attending school I have been a single mother and maintained two jobs. As I approach the end of my undergraduate career I envision a future for me in graduate school pursuing the field of I/O psychology. The steps that I have taken in the past five years have all been thought out and planned to make a transition with my life into a career field that I feel is the best option for me. Pursuing is graduate level degree is a somewhat selfish act on my part. Gaining acceptance into graduate school is a short-term goal in a long-term life plan.

Objective:My objective is to obtain an entry level human resource position. This June I will have completed my education at an accredited online university where I am majoring in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. I have been in the healthcare field for the past twelve years. I think that the interpersonal skill that this field has taught me will be an asset in any field that I am able to venture into. I do have plans to further my education beyond a B/A in Industrial/Organization Psychology and Human Resources in the up and coming future.

Reflection

Looking back on my academic years I have noticed that I am able to express my opinions with well researched facts. I have been able to develop my knowledge of ethics and research in the field of psychology.

Interpersonal Effectiveness

“In the role of a parent I think that it is important to be aware of the developmental milestones of your children because this can indicate if a child will have developmental issues. Piaget discussed the developmental stages that a child of normal development will go through, (Argosy University, 2009). For example from the ages of 0-2 years old a child only has the sensorimotor development. This behavior would include sucking, looking and grasping, (Argosy University, 2009). If a child is unable to suck a bottle or doesn’t response to caregivers touch this is an early indication that the child might have developmental issues.

As the role of a teacher the teacher has to be aware of developmental issues with a child. They would have to be aware for the same reasons that a parent would and also because the teacher would have to be aware of social development issues. Kohlberg expanded on Piaget’s developmental idea. Kohlberg believed that a person’s moral reasoning started to develop at the same time as Paiget’s cognitive developmental stages (Argosy University, 2009). An example of this is when a child who is in stage two of the preconvention morality they reason everything with an eye for an eye justice. If a child was in school and another child hit the other the child that was hit would hit the other child back not thinking of the consequences.

Interpersonal Effectiveness

Finally, as the role of a juvenile justice judge it is important that a judge takes into consideration a defendants age, moral and cognitive status. The judge has three times the reasonability a judge has to make the decision that could change a person’s life forever. An example when a child commits murder a child who kills another person is not able to fully comprehend the magnitude of the situation. The judge has to decide if the accused child had the cognitive ability to understand the consequences of their actions. They also have to take in to consideration the morality of the defendant. A judge who feels that a child will never change due to their moral judgment may issue a harsher sentence than a child who killed someone because they defended themselves or others.”

The following is an excerpt from a online classroom discussion concerning religion…

“This week we look at the controversial topic of religion as it applies to personality development.

For starters, you may remember that Freud viewed the need for religion as a weakness and a sign of neurosis. In contrast, Gordon Allport (whom you are reading about this week) believed that religious orientation is often indicative of a healthy adult personality.

So, now it’s your turn to weigh in on this issue.

1. In your opinion, what part does religion play, if any, in personality development?

“I think that religion plays a very important part in personality development. (Feist and Feist, 2009), discussed Gordon Allport’s view on religion. Allport believed that a deep religious commitment was a sign of maturity. He also believed that not all religious people have a mature religious orientation. I do agree with Allport that very active churchgoers tend to be a bit more self-righteous and prejudicial,(Feist and Feist,2009).This theory is evident in the extrinsic and intrinsic orientation churchgoers. The extrinsic orientated churchgoer sees their religion as a means to an end and is self-serving. The intrinsic churchgoer brings their religion into harmony with their live,(Feist and Feist,2009).”

  

2. Discuss why you support or oppose the presence of religion as a vital component of personality development. Be specific and detailed in your response.

I support religion as a vital component of personality development mainly because I think that my past religious experience has shaped my personality to what it is today. I consider myself an agnostic today but when I lived at home, my family’s faith was Jehovah’s Witness. I think this is the reason that I am agnostic today is because the strict demands of this religion. I have dealt with many, if not all of the personality defects that come from being in a strict religion. (Bergman, J.1996) discuss the association of schizophrenia and Jehovah’s Witnesses that admit that they suffer from the illness. I unfortunately can relate to this issue as well as some of the other issues that are shared by ex-Jehovah Witnesses. I think that if I had not experienced some of the events in my life that had a direct link to my religious upbringing then it may have been possible that I would be low in psychoticism and high in extraversion. I struggle with maintaining and try to understand simple emotions that I now realize that I may not ever understand. I think that besides genetics the socio-cultural experiences that came from growing up in household that never celebrate any achievements, individuality, milestones, or holidays has stunted I have this overall indifference to religion as a whole. I think that if people find comfort in religion than it is good for them to continue in their faith, but as for me I personally do not find comfort in any religious sect or organization. I find myself experiencing anxiety and disconnect with any organized religion. I think that religious my aversion is a sign of maturity on my part. I think that because I took the time to explore my feelings concerning religion and made the decision that was right for me that it shows that I have grown past the point of only listening to others opinions and views and adopting them as my own. I do not require my daughter to follow my views she is free to explore almost any religion that does not cause harm to her or others as she wishes.

My Future in Learning

Learning is a lifelong process. How do you envision your future as a lifelong learner?

Though the road to obtaining my first degree has taken many turns, I do not plan to stop learning. I plan to continue my academic career and continue on to graduate school. Learning should not be confined to the classroom it should be in any and everything that we do. We can learn from just going to the grocery store and observing behavior. We can learn by being inquisitive and asking simple but yet effective questions. Learning does not stop just because we have mastered all of the assets of our field. We can continue to learn by studying other fields that may or may not relate to our area of expertise. Furthermore, I feel it is extremely vital to human survival to stay abreast of the new technology and how it shapes our way of learning from now and into the future.
