POPULAR MUSIC

THE ASPEN ART MUSEUM is hosting a free classical music series this summer, titled “Music with a View.” It will showcase Aspen Music Festival students performing chamber music in the rooftop café and sculpture garden at the museum. The series, which opens Tuesday, July 7 at 6 p.m., has all the markings of an Aspen artistic tradition in the making.

MASTER JAZZ TRUMPETER Wynton Marsalis comes to the Benedict Music Tent on July 6 for a concert with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. The joint presentation of Jazz Aspen Snowmass and the Aspen Music Festival showcases Marsalis with his 15-piece band and guest vocalist Rene Marie.

Tickets run $60 to $375 and are available at www.aspenmusicfestival.com.

Read more about Marsalis in the Monday, July 6 edition of The Aspen Times.

ASPEN REGULARS Thievery Corporation return to town for a big two-night Fourth of July run at Belly Up Aspen.

The Washington, D.C.-based collective — led by Rob Garza and Eric Hilton — always brings an eclectic group of multi-cultural guest musicians to town for their can’t-miss shows. Theirs is an inimitable blend of chilled-out electronica, dance music, sitar-based Indian textures, touches of jazz and reggae and bossa nova.

Thievery’s shows have a distinctly communal vibe, bringing to the stage a series of guest vocalists to lead on songs from their diverse catalogue (and hits like “Lebanese Blonde”) from the mid-1990s to last year’s “Saudade,” while bassist Ashish Vyas saunters around the rug-covered stage in his bare feet.

On the newest album, Thievery traded the fiery energy of their last two records for a wistful mood and summery spirit, a refreshing change of pace amid the often aggressive sounds of today’s other leading DJs.

The band’s diverse sound is an ideal soundtrack to celebrating the great American melting pot on Independence Day.

Thievery will perform on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4 at 9 p.m. Tickets are $100 to $255 and available at the Belly Up box office and www.bellyupaspen.com. If you go, plan for a late night. As has become their custom when they come to town, an after-party DJ set will go well into the early morning hours. Congo Sanchez will DJ Friday and Garza will spin on Saturday.

Thievery Corporation will perform at Belly Up Aspen on July 3 and 4.

Wynton Marsalis will perform with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on Monday night at the Benedict Music Tent.

THE WEEKLY CONVERSATION

I’D BEEN HEARING and reading it for weeks, but never really believed the U.S. Supreme Court would rule in favor of gay marriage on a national level.

Now, though, it’s a matter of history, following the announcement last week that the justices had voted, 5-4, in favor of making same-sex marriage the law of the land.

A hearty “Huzzah” to the five who voted for common sense over prejudice and ignorance.

I’m happy it has finally happened, make no mistake about that. I have watched in pain, sympathy and frustration as gay friends have gone to great lengths to get around state bans on same-sex marriages in recent years.

I heard on Sunday that one such couple, two men who live in San Francisco, immediately went out and got married in response to Friday’s announcement. I’ve been on a trip across the country and haven’t talked with them yet, but I can imagine the joy they felt as they recited their vows before a justice of the peace at City Hall.

Yep, it’s about damned time. But the fight is not over yet, as the

Christian right and its conservative political supporters have been fomenting everything from civil disobedience in protest to outright rejection of the ruling. Some counties in Alabama stopped issuing marriage licenses altogether, for gay or straight couples, which seems like a rather extreme reaction.

Even Chief Justice John Roberts, one of the four dissenters on the high court, seemed to be saying this ruling should not be taken on its face value.

In his desperation to find a way to condemn the ruling, he opined that marriage should not be something that he and his brethren on the high court (men and women) ought to be concerned with.

In reality, what he was saying is that gay marriage is not a civil right, so it cannot be a matter for the courts.

But how is this different, as a matter of law, than the rights of black citizens, or women, or any other group that has battled against illegitimate oppression, legalized discrimination and violent subjugation?

It is not, in my eyes, and a majority of the court concurred.

Marriage, at its most elemental level as currently practiced, is a union between two people, a contract by which they declare their devotion and commitment to each other for the duration of their lives, along with accepting certain legal rights and obligations that go along with being married.

But according to researchers, marriage initially had nothing to do with love and everything to do with more prosaic concerns, such as property rights and inheritance; strategic alliances between families, usually royal families but also wealthy ones with

no royal ties; and control of a woman’s fertility.

The very word, “marriage,” first appeared in the Middle English lexicon of the 13t century, although its linguistic roots go further back in Latin and French.

But right off, the definitions and obligations associated with the institution were anything but uniformly understood,

accepted and applied.According to one website,

www.livescience.com, early customs regarding marriage held that a man could simply jettison his wife and get another if the first once was unable to conceive.

And there were other, less sanguine excuses for a man having multiple wives, mainly having to do with the libido of the male involved and the female interest in the security that wedlock provided, throughout much of the history of marriage as an institution.

It was the Christian church, the livescience.com researchers report, that began agitating for monogamy in married couples, even as it continued to support the idea that married women remained essentially the property of their husbands with few or no legal, financial or other rights of their own.

That idea started changing in the late 19th century, according to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, primarily in Europe and the U.S., as governments began making changes to the institution such as giving wives identities of their own, abolition of the right of husbands to beat their wives into submission, and giving wives property rights, among many other liberalizing modifications.

In other words, marriage has never been, and never will be, precisely and lastingly defined.

As such, marriage cannot be viewed as any kind of rigid set of rules imposed by some higher authority on all of us little people down here on Earth.

Instead, it is just another of the numerous, sometimes flawed methods we humans have come up with for defining our relations with each other.

And despite all of the gnashing of teeth and beating of chests now underway among conservative political and religious subsets of our population, this latest redefinition is not a precursor to the end of the world.

It is just the end of one egregious and nasty chapter in our nation’s history, and the beginning of a new chapter, one that bestows on everyone the freedom to choose whom they love and to marry them, regardless of the howling condemnation from the bigots among us.

And trust me, ultimately this will all seem like a tempest in a teapot.

FROM the VAULTLEGENDS & LEGACIES

P H O T O C O U R T E S Y O F T H E L I B R A R Y O F C O N G R E S S

Richard P. Bland, known affectionately to Aspenites as “Silver Dick,” had an interesting life and career. His association with mining began in the 1860s when he prospected in California and then plied his law skills in Virginia City, Nevada — home of the Comstock. After Nevada achieved statehood, Bland moved back to his native Missouri. There, he was elected to Congress in 1872 and was reelected 10 times.

Disgusted with the economic downturn from the Panic of 1893, Bland took up the cause of bimetallism. He believed the policy would restore and stabilize prices of agricultural produce in his district as well as the price of another product closer to his heart: Comstock silver.

Along with Sen. William Allison of Iowa, Bland pushed a bill that would require the U.S. Treasury to buy silver at market prices. What’s more, the bill required coining a minimum of $42 million of silver each month, to be minted as silver dollars. The act passed Congress in 1878, but

President Hayes vetoed it. And then, Congress overrode the veto. The act reinvigorated the ongoing search for silver and drew prospectors to Aspen in 1879.

The Bland-Allison Act and bimetallism were hotly debated for

two decades after the enactment. Bland continued as silver’s evangelist and came close to rescuing it. But he was defeated by filibusters, parliamentary maneuvers and close votes in the House. His name often appeared in Aspen’s newspapers, where it was as widely recognized as any president’s.

He spoke to an enthusiastic and

overflowing crowd at the Wheeler in 1895. The same afternoon, he addressed an outdoor crowd at Hallam Lake, though he could not be heard beyond the first few rows of chairs.

President Cleveland had repealed

the successor to his act in 1892. Yet Bland extolled the importance of America’s return to bimetallism: “If Great Britain had the silver in the Rocky Mountains we would have had free coinage long ago,” he said. “She has South African gold and thinks we must get it. Here we are a great commercial nation, more important then England, France and Germany

combined and we ask thee countries to help us coin silver. Ridicules! If we coin it they will want it and they will have to pay us for it. When one great nation of the world coins it that coinage sets its value throughout the world as money.”

At the Democratic convention to nominate a presidential candidate to run in 1896, Bland beat William Jennings Bryan on the first three ballots. But he did not garner the two-thirds majority required to win the nomination.

Bryan, who had run for the presidency several times, once said that he would rather be right than be president. Bland, would rather see his cause succeed than be president. He asked his supporters to switch to Bryan, who was better at stirring up crowds. He also turned down the convention’s desire for him to run as vice-president.

Bland made a second trip to Aspen. He traveled with Bryan, who overshadowed him on the Wheeler stage. But Bland remained an Aspen favorite, the consistent champion of silver.

Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. Reach him at [email protected].

You may remember the Bland-Allison Act from your American History class. It has a catchy title that sticks in your memory even if you don’t remember what it was about. The act was important to Aspen’s existence. And its author, a beloved politician, visited Aspen on two occasions.

‘SILVER DICK’

DISGUSTED WITH THE ECONOMIC DOWNTURN FROM THE PANIC OF 1893, BLAND TOOK UP THE CAUSE OF BIMETALLISM. HE BELIEVED THE POLICY WOULD RESTORE AND STABILIZE PRICES OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCE IN HIS DISTRICT AS WELL AS THE PRICE OF ANOTHER PRODUCT CLOSER TO HIS HEART: COMSTOCK SILVER.

Richard P. Bland, longtime advocate for bimetallism, applauded Aspen’s support of the policy when he spoke at the Wheeler in the 1890s.

ON JUNE 30, 1893, the Aspen Daily Times promoted the upcoming Fourth of July parade, noting that “the parade which will march through the streets at 11 o’clock on the Fourth of July is going to be a record breaker. Following is the line of march: Parade will form on the corner of Mill and Hyman. It will march south on Mill to Cooper, east on Cooper to Hunter, North on Hunter to Hopkins, west on Hopkins to Galena, south on Galena to Hyman, west on Hyman to Second, north on Second to Main, east on Main to Mill, south on Mill to Hyman, where the parade will be dismissed. Among the other attractions will be the city and county officials in carriages, the fine trotters, the cowboys under the command of J.M. Williams, burros in charge of George Manley, the Aspen Fire Department and many other interesting and pleasing features. The committee requests residents along the line of march as given above to sprinkle the streets in front of their homes thoroughly before the parade and save themselves and the paraders much dust and trouble.” The image above shows Aspen’s Fourth of July parade on Mill Street, at the corner of Hopkins and Mill.

TEST RUN: RUNNING SHOES, 2015

GEAR of the WEEKFROM ASPEN, WITH LOVE

for tough trails and off-trail pursuits like orienteering and adventure racing. This new model is aimed at the ultra-running crowd who run 30, 50, or 100 miles at a time. It weighs 10 ounces (per shoe), which is a bit heavier than minimalist models I have long loved from the company. But here you get a wider toe box and more protection underfoot — both requisite upgrades for anyone running ultra distances without losing Inov-8’s signature flexible, nimble feel. $120, inov-8.com

THE NORTH FACE ULTRA TR IIMade with a unique ripstop “tent

fabric” upper that includes protective suede overlays, the Ultra TR is something different. It is the fastest shoe in this review, weighing about 9 ounces and built with a low-to-the-ground sole that demands reaction. On the foot the fabric feels stiff, and it also crinkles when you bend up the heel. But while running it fits close and breathes well. If you want cushion, look elsewhere. This is a minimally-padded shoe that lets you feel the terrain. The sole is made of sticky rubber, giving good traction despite minimal lugs. I wear this shoe for fast training days and for footraces, on road and on the trail. $110, thenorthface.com

Stephen Regenold writes about out-doors gear at www.gearjunkie.com.

RUNNING ON ROADS AND TRAILS remains my primary method to stay in shape. As such, I go through a lot of footwear each year, pounding out hundreds of miles through rain, snow, and summer heat.

Here are four pairs of running shoes I have been testing this spring. Each is distinct and appropriate for its venue, from soft ground to hard pavement in an urban core.

SKORA TEMPOA wild upper made of thin,

welded mesh panels has no stitching but hugs the feet. Underfoot are foam modules made to absorb impact but not interfere with a natural stride. I found all that to be true in my test; the Tempos have a “barefoot” feel with a zero-drop build, meaning the heel is the same height as the front of the foot. But the 22mm of foam dampens the blow as you stride and land flat-footed or, when sprinting, up on your toes. Lightweight at about 8 ounces per shoe. $129.95, skorarunning.com

PEARL IZUMI E:MOTIONWith a flexible and slightly

convex outsole, these made-for-pavement shoes became a go-to this spring. I like the forgiveness of the build — you can land on your foot most any way, from heel to forefoot, and the shoe absorbs and directs you onward into the next stride. WINEINKFROM ASPEN, WITH LOVE

NOT LONG AGO I awoke in Happy Canyon under the influence of a thick fog.

Actually, two fogs. The first, and most immediate, was the fog in my

head, a result of the Westerly “Fletcher’s Red” wine I had finished late the night before. But the more mesmerizing mist was the by-product of a deep Pacific marine layer that had crept over California’s Santa Ynez Valley,

arranging its cool blanket of moist ocean air across the vineyards that surrounded the Crown Point Vineyards guesthouse where I had spent the night.

Founded in 2012, Crown Point Vineyards is the newest winery in the equally new Happy Canyon AVA of Santa Barbara County. The vision of Texan Roger Bower, it is a project that, while still in its infancy, is positioned to become, in time, a significant player in California Cabernet. Bower’s goal is to make world-class wine from the highest quality estate-grown fruit. His newly built, state-of-the-art winery also serves as home to Westerly Wines, which is currently producing a number of varietals reflecting the terroir of the Santa Barbara sub-regions.

While the vines of Crown Point are in the growing stage, and the earliest vintage slated for release will be the 2013, Westerly is turning out outstanding limited-production, handcrafted wines. These include an excellent Sauvignon Blanc from the Santa Ynez Valley, a well-balanced Pinot Noir from the Sta. Rita Hills appellation, and a number of red wines sourced from Happy Canyon itself.

The aforementioned Westerly “Fletcher’s Red” is a classic left-bank Bordeaux blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon and supported by Merlot and Petit Verdot, with cameo appearance of Cab Franc. The 2012 is a fine young wine boasting solid tannins, but there are also rich layers of dark fruits

and a finish that hangs around for a while. It gives a hint of the promise of the Crown Point Vineyards site.

Bower had the good sense to select a young winemaker with a pedigree for his ventures — one who can grow as the region grows. Adam Henkel is a bourbon drinker from Kentucky who found his way to the Napa Valley (following a stint on the slopes in Jackson Hole) where he began making wines, first at Merryvale, then at Swanson Vineyards in Oakville, and finally, for eight years, at the cult-classic Harlan Estate. There he worked with, and learned from, the great wine folks at Harlan and Bond including director of winegrowing Bob Levy, winemaker Cory Empting, and Mary Maher, who managed the vineyards. It was the winemaking equivalent of a Harvard MBA.

When the opportunity was offered by Bower in the spring of 2013 to come pioneer an area that has the potential to become one of the most unique wine growing regions on earth, Henkel, and his wife, Kellie, headed to Happy Canyon.

The Santa Barbara wine region is blessed by a unique geographical quirk. While most grape growing regions in California (and the world) run from north to south, the valleys in Santa Barbara run from east to west, allowing the cooling ocean breezes and, yes, the fog, to flow into the vineyards and cool them after the warm days. This gives cool climate locations like the Santa Rita Hills a climate perfect for the production of Pinot Noir.

But in Happy Canyon, the easternmost viticultural area in the Santa Barbara wine region, the blanket of fog burns off early each summer morning allowing the temperatures to rise into the 90s daily. This combination of hot days and cool nights (called the diurnal effect) combines with a unique soil profile that mixes loam and clay and stony cobbles to give this place the potential to become a significant region for both Bordeaux and Rhône varietals.

In addition to being hot, Happy

Canyon is also young, petite and beautiful. It is said that the region got its name during Prohibition when folks would “take a trip to Happy Canyon” to get their alcohol fix. But it was not until 1996 that vineyards were first planted. In fact, the first Happy Canyon vintage came in 2001, and the AVA was only granted official status in 2009. With just over 23,000 acres, it is the smallest AVA in the Santa Barbara region.

For most of the last half-century, Happy Canyon has been best known for the thoroughbred racehorses that are raised there. Fletcher Jones, who Southern Californians may remember for his auto dealerships, once owned a major chunk of Happy Canyon and

established the Westerly Stud Farm there in the 1970s. That is where Westerly Wines got its moniker and it was winemaker Adam Henkel who suggested the red blend be named for Fletcher.

One of the great joys in the world of wine is having the opportunity to watch both vineyards and the people who tend them evolve and grow. Over the coming decades Happy Canyon, the wines of Westerly and Crown Point Vineyards will all be worth a long look.

Syrah dominates this wine (with a mellowing dose of Viognier) and it is bold and balanced featuring strong earthy notes of spice and fruit. A great food wine, I would pair this with a rack of St. Louis-style pork ribs, generously treated with a pepper and brown sugar rub before being grilling over mesquite. In fact that is exactly what I did.

FOOD MATTERS

LOUNGING OUTSIDE at dusk on the cabin’s spacious deck, we ooh and aah as platter after platter emerges from the kitchen: buckwheat blini with smoked

trout, crème fraîche, and chives; burrata crostini with cherry tomatoes and basil; prosciutto-wrapped Palisade peaches and plums drizzled with balsamic reduction. We savor every morsel, alongside sparkling wine and

cocktails made from Woody Creek Distillers new artisanal gin. Later at dinner, fifteen or so diners devour an enticing seasonal spread: sweet corn soup with whipped cream and tarragon, to start, then asparagus grilled and tossed with lemon dressing and crispy fried shallots; sugar snap pea risotto, luscious and bright with mascarpone and mint; and a Spanish-style, grilled bone-in pork loin with a beautiful vermillion Romesco sauce. To cap this feast, we polish off bowls of airy white chocolate mousse topped with marinated Colorado cherries and pistachio biscotti. We are stuffed.

The meal, prepared by a prominent Aspen chef, would have been impressive anywhere in town. However, we are tucked many miles from Mill Street, tucked far outside of cellular service in the Sawatch Mountain foothills, at a spacious and sturdy 10th Mountain Division Hut. The three-day excursion has drawn a gaggle of travel journalists and adventure industry folks from across the country here for a full-on “glamping” retreat in the Colorado wilderness — guided hikes and gourmet meals included.

Prior to happy hour we embarked on afternoon-long jaunt that saw us scrambling up steep embankments, across rocky pastures, over narrow footpaths crowded by branches and brambles, and beneath a massive, thundering waterfall. Before that, upon arriving to our lodging, we enjoyed a lavish lunch: Vietnamese

bánh mi sandwiches stuffed with pork-pistachio pâté en terrine; Southern spiced deviled eggs; and fresh fruit cocktail with kaffir lime simple syrup and what we all thought was lavender but turned out to be basil seeds instead. Basil seeds.

“Our days might revolve around food!” quipped a writer from L.A. as we dug into dinner of our first day. It was clear that nobody would go to bed with even the slightest stomach rumble. We were not just fueling up after muddy treks. We were dining like royals.

When I had received the invitation and scanned our itinerary, I was equally parts intrigued and perplexed. On one hand, having a private chef cater a swanky meal at the hut sounds like a fine way to close the day. At the same time I knew I’d long for the experience of primitive camp cookery: meat thrown on crusty grates over a fire pit or skewered on sticks whittled with a pocket knife, perhaps some canned soup bubbling in a battered tin pot. S’mores.

I think about what is lost. One of the most satisfying meals I ever cooked was the first time I camped solo, a few years ago in Pennsylvania’s Ohiopyle State Park, some 500 miles into what would turn into a seven-month cross-country road trip. The forest was lush, wet, and swarming with mosquitoes — Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater territory. The threat of rain hung in the sky as I found my site and unpacked my

tent to less dusk light than I would have liked. By the time I got a fire going, it was straight up nighttime. Still, I had a headlamp and I was determined to make dinner. I had secured all ingredients à la carte at the lone general store in the town

nearby: a quarter-pound of ground beef, cheese, deli veggies, bun. I even bought a whole potato to slice up and wrap in foil for makeshift camp fries, as my science teacher taught us how to do on a sixth-grade trip.

I felt invigorated by my

newfound and seemingly limitless independence — until I dropped a slice of cheese in the dirt. I laid the finished burger, with a crust of black pepper and sea salt charred by fire, gingerly between a potato bun with limp slices of lettuce and

tomato. I ate in pitch darkness. It was one of the best burgers I’ve ever enjoyed. One burger can encapsulate so much: the sheer satisfaction of working in the wild to feed oneself a hot meal, despite inherent limitations and inevitable screw-ups.

Back at the hut, on our second night, our massage therapist — another unnecessary luxury, but one I am totally on board with — shares a story. A veteran of commercial rafting trips on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, she laments the hassle of lugging along “the kitchen” in the raft. The focus, she says, shifts away from the experience of adventure on the water to what elaborate dishes the guides might concoct from packets and cans on a riverbank beach. Plus, it’s a lot of extra weight. So when

a friend inquired about joining her upcoming raft trip, she felt it necessary to be stern: “Sure, but can you live off peanut butter for 26 days?”

Meanwhile, our guides are jockeying among propane burners inside the cabin’s tiny kitchen to boil water and chop veggies for a simpler meal of pasta primavera and fresh fruit. The private chef had left the night before, leaving us glampers to fend for ourselves.

A professional female rock climber from California — our yoga instructor, natch — surveys the meal in progress. She’s petite and sinewy — the kind of spry athlete who must keep moving during all waking hours and whose skin is baked to a permanent bronze.

“This looks healthier than what we had last night,” she whispers. “I don’t like fancy food. There was so much butter, cheese, and heavy cream. I can’t eat that stuff! Not my thing.”

Any other time, I might have chalked up her aversion to a lack of sophistication, a misguided contempt for gourmet cuisine. But now I find myself nodding. We are in a hut — not exactly roughing it — but still camping, technically, without electricity, running water, or other trappings of modern life. This is no place for fancy — or rich — food.

Earlier that day, we made individual lunches to take on an all-day hike. I layered turkey, avocado, and sprouts onto a

tortilla, showering it with salt and pepper. I rolled it up like a sandwich artist champion of the world, nestled it in my backpack next to a rain jacket, and dug it out a few hours later when we found some rocks overlooking a sinkhole. Fingernails caked with dirt from picking snail shells from the limestone-rich soil along the way, I peel away the foil delicately. The first creamy, chewy, salty bite is bliss. This is what I’ve been craving out here in the woods: Camp food.

The Fourth of July can be a long day.

Here in Aspen, it often begins with the

Boogie’s Buddy Five foot race, followed

by the parade and barbecues, and topped

off with a concert and fireworks. One

thing I’ve learned the hard way is that

it is not easy to drink your way through

all of this — or at least not by mixing

drinks (Bloody Mary to beer to tequila is

ASPEN UNTUCKEDFROM ASPEN, WITH LOVE by BARBARA PLATTS

SHE DIDN’T SEEM TO BE of this world. Not meaning that she felt like an outsider. More that there seemed to be so many other worlds out there that she

belonged to; so many circumstances or situations I couldn’t be a part of that she fit into with ease and acceptance. It was like she knew something that no one else did.

This was my second or third time meeting Deva Shantay, the co-founder of True

Nature in Carbondale; however, it was my first time communicating with her in a situation like this, for an intuitive therapy session. An increasingly popular form of holistic healing, intuitive therapists use their sixth sense to help patients tap into their personal lives in a more meaningful way. This has become particularly trendy on both coasts and even in the U.K. recently.

Deva started offering intuitive therapy sessions four years ago. She said she fought doing it for a long time. She didn’t want to accept the fact that she saw and sensed things that other people couldn’t.

“I tried not to do it for as long as I possibly could,” she says. “It was scary to ‘come out of the closet,’ to

show what I see.” The mother of two, who owns

True Nature with her husband Eaden Shantay, got so many requests from friends for advice and analysis she eventually gave in and started offering sessions to a few people. Word got out quickly, making it not so easy to keep her gift quiet. Even today, she says that sharing this with others is a continual process.

Deva says most people come into an intuitive therapy session skeptical, not having much of an idea as to what they are getting into, but by the end they are usually in shock by the experience.

“By the end of the session they usually have so much appreciation,” she says about most first-time clients.

Unlike traditional therapy sessions, Deva does not give each person she works with a timeline for when they should come back. Some want to right away, and others don’t come back for a while.

“You’ll know when you’re ready to come back,” Deva says. “Some people I don’t need to see for years. They were given enough in a session to sustain them for a long time.”

I didn’t know what to expect when I went into a session with Deva. I had practiced yoga before and was a big fan of meditation. I

was mildly familiar with Buddhism and Hinduism and the idea of an aura and dharma, but that’s about as far as my knowledge in this realm went.

When I walked in to meet with her I was immediately relaxed by the ambience of True Nature. It’s easy to feel at home there, to feel healthy and inspired by just simply walking in the door. We went upstairs and sat on the floor in a studio room. The space was beautiful, every inch filled with interesting, Eastern-inspired details. Entrances and certain walls were adorned with intricately carved wooden frames, many of which are actually from places in India, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Before starting my session, Deva clearly explained her beliefs, allowing me to understand where she was coming from with this type of therapy. She spoke about her sixth sense and ability to see spirits, as well as her belief in multiple lives and how people that have passed away never really leave us. They are around us constantly.

She first asked me if I would give her permission to be let in, to essentially see my aura. I quickly agreed. She then asked if there was anything she should not be let in on that tied into my life. I thought about it for a second. There are plenty of bruises and scrapes from

my past that hurt when they are provoked, and even when they aren’t, but I wanted to get the full experience. I gave her permission to bring up anything.

The details through the one-hour session have stuck with me. It’s hard to even explain the process or how I felt during it. Even now, I’m not sure. Deva never assumed anything while we were talking. Unlike mediums you hear about who claim to know all about your life, she took pieces of energy she felt, things she saw and allowed me to fill in the blanks. She gave me the tools and insight to solve my own problems instead of claiming she could or would fix them for me. And she also gave me a sense on how I can ultimately become the best version of myself. I am often a skeptic, but the things she was saying, whether I could fully believe them or not at the time, were important to hear. I left the session feeling more relaxed than I have in a long while. And, even after several weeks, I have a lot left to ponder ...

Barbara Platts is still wrestling with some of the details from her intuitive therapy session with Deva. She’s happy she went though, and highly recommends it to others. Reach her at [email protected].

VOYAGES DESTINATION | SOLVANG, CALIFORNIA

IT WAS THE FRAGRANT SMELL of smoke in the air that grabbed me by the nostrils and sent me scurrying to the vast lawns at the quintessentially Californian Alisal Guest Ranch and Resort.

I had journeyed from Aspen to the Santa Barbara wine country for an intensive weekend of live-fire cooking at Alisal’s BBQ Boot Camp. But alas, a day of wine touring in the amazing local vineyards had distracted me. So, by the time I checked in the heady aroma of red oak was already wafting through the coastal oaks, sycamores and eucalyptus trees that cocoon the Ranch. The festivities were about to get under way.

The Alisal Ranch and Resort, centered just outside of Solvang, not far from where the Santa Ynez Valley meets the Pacific, is an American gem. Over 10,000 acres of what was once the native hunting grounds of California’s Chumash Indians has been transformed into an idyllic getaway for those who gather to ride horses, play tennis, golf, hike, bike, swim, or just plain relax with their families.

Opened to the public for play in 1946 by the Jackson Family, who still own the property, Alisal marries the luxury of a resort with the ruggedness of a dude ranch and the activities of a summer camp. More than 70 cabin-like suites and studios set around the lawns and gardens of the grounds are just a short walk from stables that provide epic backcountry equestrian getaways, tennis courts that have hosted the world’s top players and a pair of golf courses that challenge pro and weekend

duffers alike. But for those who return year

after year (I sat with four, yes four, generations of one family who have been visiting Alisal since the 1950s), the distinguishing characteristic that keeps coming up in conversation is the exceptional cuisine. In particular, the wood-fired BBQs that have been a staple for the past 60 years. So it only made sense that the resort’s executive chef, Pascal Godé, would team with the region’s most famous purveyor of Santa Maria BBQ, chef Frank Ostini from the renowned Hitching Post II in nearby Buellton, to show guests how it’s done.

Arriving at the great lawn I was greeted by a serious set-up of smokers and grills, and tables piled high with fresh asparagus,

thick steaks and chops, and ruby salmon. Under the sycamores stood the Frenchman, Godé, and the Italian-Californian, Ostini, in matching pith helmets. In front of them, lounging in lawn chairs and standing on the outdoor deck of the dining area, were 40 or so of my fellow students, each with a glass of local beer or wine in hand. This was going to be fun.

The Hitching Post has been synonymous with great steaks since Frank’s father opened the Casmalia location in 1952. He has spent his entire life working in the kitchens and behind the grills that have created a specialty cuisine identified as “Santa Maria” style BBQ. It revolves around the use of wood fires to give meats, fowl and seafood their unique flavor,

which also involves something called “Magic Stuff,” a seasoning blend that is proprietary to the restaurant. In 2004, the Academy Award-winning film “Sideways,” about a pair of wine buddies traveling the region, featured a number of scenes in the restaurant and the popularity of Hitching Post II exploded.

Godé, who has been executive chef at the Alisal Guest Ranch for 22 years, came from a very different cooking background. He honed his skills in many of the best restaurants in France before coming to America to helm the kitchens of a number of prominent French-American restaurants in Four Seasons Resorts.

Over the next three days, this unlikely pair led myself and the

other students/guests/chefs through the intricacies of great BBQ. From the use of charcoal versus gas, what woods impart what flavors, how to light the fires, what cuts to cook, how to flavor the smoke, and, perhaps most important, the best way to tell when your BBQ is done, we covered just about everything

imaginable in the world of live fire cooking. A particularly popular element of the curriculum was a session where each of us was encouraged to create our own rubs from a table that featured over 30 different salts, herbs and spices.

But as great as the tips and suggestions, nothing beat the bacchanalia of the dining

experience. Each night we gathered around the grills and savored Santa Maria brilliance. From the simple onions and peppers to the all-time primo proteins, each bite was unforgettable. Smoke was the common denominator.

By the time the BBQ Boot Camp weekend was over at the Alisal Ranch and Resort, I had become

a master of my own grill universe. The lessons learned have brought newfound BBQ joy, not just for me, but for my summer guests as well.

The Alisal Ranch BBQ Boot Camp returns for a Fall “semester” this October. It is suggested that students “apply” early. You’ll be glad you did.

Patients give AVH high marks

Five-Star Hospital … Best Performer … 96th Percentile. These are just some of the wordsthat describe Aspen Valley Hospital’s (AVH)quantitative patient survey results.

For the first time, Medicare is assigning “stars”to over 3,500 hospitals to show how patientsgraded their inpatient stays. Hospitals with thelowest ratings receive one star, while the oneswith the best reviews get five stars.

AVH, with a respectable 32 percent responserate, rated five stars, along with only three otherColorado hospitals (in Durango, SteamboatSprings, and Lakewood). Check out the resultsat www.hospitalcompare.gov.

On the heels of this news, we were notified by Avatar Solutions — the research and consulting firm that administers patient satisfaction surveys to hundreds of hospitalsthroughout the nation — that we were named“Best Performer, Overall Rating” for Small Hospitals. We placed at the 96th percentile forinpatient care with top scores being earned inthe areas of admissions, environment, generalcare, leaving the hospital, meals, nursing care, problem resolution, and visitors/family.

Aspen Valley Hospital

The Year in ReviewA Message FromDan Bonk, CEO, and Barry Mink, MD, Board PresidentAt Aspen Valley Hospital, we offer the best of two worlds: the warmth and friendliness of asmall town, and the technical expertise of a major medical center. As a result, we are ableto attract and retain the highest quality staff for a wide range of services.

While each day in a hospital brings unquantifiable rewards to our physicians and employees, AVH also experienced tangible success on many fronts this past year, including:• National awards for patient satisfaction and financial stability.• Enhanced general surgery care with the addition of Drs. Joe Livengood and Les Fraser.

Dr. Livengood is a visionary leader for the trauma service, and Dr. Fraser brings extensive breast care experience to the women of our community.

• Recruitment of a new hospitalist, adding to the outstanding inpatient services already available.

• Completion of Phase II of our master facilities plan.• Commencement of a fully-funded Phase III which will include a new emergency

department, diagnostic imaging, and surgery services.• Financial strength due to diligent cost containment and fiscal management.

Bond rating of Baa2.• Remarkable philanthropic support, with $33.5 million raised for the capital campaign

to date.• Progress toward a "high reliability organization" and numerous accomplishments in a

national patient safety initiative.• "Gold" certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).• Recertification for our trauma program by the Colorado Department of Public Health

and Environment.• An incredibly low infection rate -- 0.5% compared to the national average of 5%.

At AVH our plates are full, but it is an honor for us to serve this great community and all who live, work, and play here. We look forward to another year of delivering extraordinaryhealthcare to you and your family.

Volunteers bring the generosity of heart and soul to AVH

Aspen Valley Hospital (AVH) volunteers are an eclectic group:• They are college students or young adults just beginning their careers.• They are retired from a variety of professions — corporate executives,

entrepreneurs, teachers, lawyers, and healthcare professionals.• They are working professionals.• They are long-time community members who have been blessed in

many ways and just want to give something back.• And they are men and women with big hearts, a generous spirit,

and a willingness to make a contribution for nothing in return.

Their contribution includes that which is given to our patients, but also what is given to our staff. They are our friends, sometimes our confidants, and people we rely on to help get the job done. Week afterweek, year after year, they share their time and talent with us at AVH.

Collectively, our current volunteers have given 675 years of service to AVH. Their dedication is an inspiration.

We thank you one and all!

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT MUSIC/ART/FILM/LITERATURE

NILE RODGERS HAS REMAINED on the musical vanguard for four decades, setting trends from the height of ’70s disco with Chic and songs like “Good Times” to the birth of hip-hop to producing game-changing albums from Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” to Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” to David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” to Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories.”

Rodgers has visited Aspen often to ski but never performed here. He will change that on July 17, when he and Chic play Jazz Aspen Snowmass’ 25th anniversary season benefit (dubbed, in his honor, the “Le Freak Lounge,” after one of Chic’s most popular songs).

I spoke with Rodgers recently from his home studio in Westport, Conn., where he was working on a long-in-the-works new Chic album – the band released a new single, “I’ll Be There,” in the spring – and several other projects.

Andrew Travers: What are you working on today?

Nile Rodgers: [laughs] Where to start? Oh my God. Kyloe Minogue, Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters, Nicky Romero, my band Chic, Michael McDonald – and unfortunately it’s all at the same time.

AT: What do you have planned for the Chic performance here?

NR: Even though we’ve played for millions and millions of people, often we play in front of an audience that have never seen us before. So we feel the need to musically edify them.

When I was a kid, my parents took me to see Miles Davis. He told the audience, ‘The music always sounds better when you know who’s playing it.’ I’ve taken that philosophy to another level. It may sound better if you know who is playing it, but for me it helps if you know why we’re playing it. Because people don’t realize I’ve written songs for so many other artists. They’ll say, ‘Why’s he playing that?’ And I’ll say, “Because it’s my song.”

AT: How old were you when you saw Miles Davis? Were you going to see a lot of jazz as a kid in Greenwich Village?

NR: I saw him a couple times. My parents were beatniks, so they were into bebop. My grandmother played jazz all the time from the swing era. They’d go out and dress up and dance to big band jazz. Whereas my parents were beatniks and they’d dress up and go out and sit down to listen to jazz.

AT: What made you want to make a new Chic record?

NR: Just the fact that Warner Bros. delivered me a box of tapes four years ago that included Chic demos that were unfinished. When I played the tapes, I was amazed at the sound quality and how well they held up.

I’m one of those people that wishes it could not be about technology. I didn’t have a negative opinion of digital. I was an early pioneer of digital. My first digital recording was with Peter Gabriel (“Walk Through Fire,” 1984), and my first complete digital album was my first solo album

(“Adventures in the Land of the Good Grooves,” 1983) because I wanted to experiment on myself, and then “Like a Virgin.” So when I got all these tapes back I was amazed at the quality, transferring the quality of the analog to digital. I felt I had the responsibility and the desire to finish those songs. If I was only working on Chic, I’d be done.

AT: This new generation has rediscovered disco through EDM and albums like “Random Access Memories.” When did you start to feel like people were embracing disco again?

NR: For me it happened 20 years ago. I met Daft Punk 19 years ago when they released their first record. Dance music never left my life. So when did I become aware? I’ve never not been aware. It may not be the most popular music at the time, but things are cyclical.

AT: Yes, but there was a backlash against disco across popular culture.

NR: Still is, by the way. I know so.

People always say to me, “If anybody should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it should be me.” But if you got to their page and see the way they describe Chic, I wouldn’t vote for me, either. They call us a subgenre of rock and roll, which I think is hilarious. When you see the bands that are called “rock and roll bands,” if you look at the history it was black music and most of those bands had the same kind of history I have. They learned from jazz and then learned to play this sophisticated, cool rock sound. It wasn’t dumbed down. So now “rock and roll” means “white guys playing loud guitars.” That’s not what it meant when I was younger.

Dance music and disco, it’s not typically white guys playing loud guitars, but we’re actually closer, if you look a the DNA strands, to the origins of rock than a bunch of white guys playing Marshalls really loud. But history is written by the powerful. And I’ve made more rock and roll records than disco records. Most of the people that I’ve produced are in the Hall of Fame.

NILE RODGERS: MAN, MYTH LEGEND, LE FREAK

At the Hammerstein Ballroom, the WE ARE FAMILY FOUNDATION headed up by Nancy Hunt and her partner Nile Rodgers put on a gala to raise funds for the organization. Chic performed and Chaka Kahn joined in — after being given The Humanitarian Award by Nile Rodgers.

AT: There are very few artists as forward-thinking as you are, who’ve continued to set trends and shape tastes for so long. What drives you at this point?

NR: I just like music and I like people and I like making music with musicians. In the last few weeks I’ve been in the studio with Keith Urban, and nobody would expect that. I’ve become his biggest champion. I don’t know why he’s not thought of as a rock guitar superstar. I’ve played with the best and this guy can smoke. I just love it. I love meeting people like that, I love learning from them and I love teaching.

Musicians are the most altruistic people in the world. They just are by nature. They learn from other musicians, they usually can’t wait to show you something. Because the things that they’ve learned have transformed their lives. And they know that knowledge that they’re laying on you is probably going to transform your life.

Like a couple years ago, when I started working with Avicii. I called him one of my favorite songwriting partners, and people said, “Whoa, how can a 23-year-old kid be your favorite writing partner?” But I was his age when I was doing “La Freak” and “Good Times.” The first star I worked with was Diana Ross and she was only 25 years old. And she was already a superstar. She was like royalty.

by DAVID ALLAN CATES for HIGH COUNTRY NEWS

MONTANA-BASED AUTHOR David Allan Cates plunges us into the raw grief of a recently widowed doctor in his latest novel, “Tom Connor’s Gift.” Janine has walked off her shift in a Wisconsin emergency room and driven to a friend’s empty cabin in the Rocky Mountains to confront the emptiness of life without her husband, Mark. She hopes that “the shell of my body will crack and the cold dust inside will blow away in the wind.” A stray puppy appears to keep her company as she re-visits her past, reliving her marriage and reading old letters from a man named Tommy Connor, who was her first love 30 years ago. Meanwhile, outside the cabin, a curious grizzly bear lurks.

This tautly written book, which the Independent Publisher Book Awards just named the year’s best fiction from the Mountain West Region, explores the continuum of human experience

from ecstasy to bone-deep despair. Cates deftly weaves together three strands of life, using Tom’s old letters, Janine’s memories of her husband, and her present experience in a cold, remote corner of Montana. As she reads Tom’s letters, she remembers where she was when she received them, and memories of her marriage surface as well. The letters serve as a kind of road map as she journeys through her grief; she ends up reliving her married life in all its complexity, relishing both the bitter and the delightful.

Tom’s letters recount the years he spent living in Central America. He de-scribes the poverty and unrest, but also shares his philosophical meditations and sexual escapades. Back when Janine first received these letters, she had trouble appreciating them; she’d be-come too frustrated by Tom’s half-crazy alcoholic instability. Now that grief has

cracked open her heart, she finds an unexpected treasure in Tom’s words. She reflects, “I feel ashamed at how little I was able to grasp of his struggle, not really to reconcile, but to stay open, to love the world so full of suffering and evil, betrayal and injustice. And isn’t that the work of it? I mean, for all of us? To be brave enough to spread our arms and open our hearts and fill our lungs with the terrible beauty of living? And isn’t that what he ... tried so hard and for so long to do?”

With down-to-earth detail and a re-freshingly blunt narrator, Cates delivers a tale of transformation that rises to a crescendo with an unforgettable scene involving the bear. “Tom Connor’s Gift” is a memorable reminder of the rich-ness available to a wide-open heart.
