The Wool Heritage RouteThe Wool heritage route takes you into the heart and soul of Western Norway. The production and processing of wool, dyeing, roving, weaving and knitting have been key elements of Norwegian culture for hundreds of years. Nordhordland is a core area for wool production, and the traditions are very much alive today. The Wool heritage route takes you through beautiful rural landscapes to the Norwegian Knitting Industry Museum in Salhus. Continue on to one of the few remaining wool factories, Hillesvåg wool factory, where the fourth-generation owner proudly guides you through 120 years of history and past machines that are over 100 years old and still produce good quality wool. At the Heathland Centre at Lygra, you can learn about the development of the cultural landscape and go on a nature walk on which you will probably meet the Norwegian ‘wild sheep’ that live outdoors all year. And don’t forget to buy a genuine handmade Norwegian woolen jumper! You may not cover all the attraction in one day. Pick your favourite attractions along the wool route.

Island hopping at the ocean’s edgeThe coastal landscape west of Bergen is where the fjords meet the Atlantic ocean. When the ice retreated 10,000 years ago, it left thousands of islands like pearls on a string. There are panoramic views of the ocean from the many bridges in Øygarden, e.g. the Rongesund bridge. From 15 June to 24 August, a cruise service operates out at the ocean’s edge from Hellesøy, the northernmost part of Øygarden to Fedje – the village in the ocean. Depatures from Hellesøy: Tue and Wed 11:50, Sat: 12:30. Return from Fedje Tue and Wed 14:35, Sat: 14:35. Stop at the Coastal Museum and learn about the history of the coast.

Skjerjehamn is a great place to stop and eat, with its pleasant seaside restaurant.
