Compromises
• Missouri Compromise (1820): Maintained the balance between free & slave states. Missouri came in slave & Maine came in free. Stated that new states below MO (36 parallel) would be slave.

Compromise of 1850: Henry Clay. North: CA entered as free state. South: Fugitive Slave Act: Runaways could be retrieved & returned to slave owners.

• Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854): Popular sovereignty (popular vote) would determine if state is free or slave.
*Bleeding Kansas: Mini civil war between slave owners & free-soilers.
