DIRECTOR’S REPORT
The snow storm last week forced us to close for the first time since February of 2014. It is always
unfortunate when we have to close even though most people are very understanding. I look at several
factors when making the decision to close with the most important factor being whether staff can safely
get to the Library. I also listen to what local safety officials are asking the public to do. If they are
recommending that people stay home, then I have to weigh the decision on how much of a help or
hindrance it might be to have the Library open. When the weather is extremely cold and people are
asked to stay inside, libraries are often warming centers providing a vital service to patrons. As has been
the case lately when we’ve had extremely cold weather, snow has not been an issue and most staff
members can safely get to work and to and from their cars. However, when we have heavy snowfalls
like the one on the 9th, travel is the issue and it’s often more dangerous to encourage people to be out
driving. I hope that we’ve had our last big snowfall of the year and it will be business as usual from here
on out. Fingers crossed!
We’re very happy with the new texting service. It provides much more information than the old service.
The old service just sent a general message about having items overdue or that an item was ready for
pick up. The new service lists the titles of overdue items and allows patrons to renew items via text. It
also lists the titles of items that are ready to be picked up. Providing more information may help
decrease the amount of holds that aren’t picked up. It’s very easy to register for the service by simply
texting to a number and following a few simple directions on your phone. Full information on
registering is available on the web site.
